Mar 6, 2009New thread to satisfy people. I don't know why it makes a difference whether a thread is new or old.
I have a Dell E1505 running XP. The headphone jack works but the internal computer speakers do not. Here's what I know:
(1) it's not the speakers. I've swapped an identical set of working speakers.
(2) it doesn't appear to be a software or driver problem. My settings look identical to those of another E1505, and I have tried re-installing drivers several times.

Now I cant get my laptop speakers working. When i check Control panel / sound I can see HDMI as a playback device but nothing for my speakers...

May 18, 2010I've got a Dell XPS 1640. My internal speakers don't work with itunes and most other applications. However, when I ran the Dell diagnostics, sound was produced. Dell tech support told me that its a software problem because there was sound in the diagnostic test.
They checked the drivers etc which are current and recommended that I reformat back to factory settings which is a major hassle. I'm running Vista 64 bit, but do have a Windows 7 update disk which I haven't installed yet. They told me that installing the Windows 7 update wouldn't fix the problem. Dell :: XPS M1710 Speakers Suddenly Stopped Working
Apr 15, 2009I have a Dell XPS M1710 laptop, and up until maybe two weeks ago my in-built speakers had been working perfectly fine.
When I tried using them again this week, I noticed the speakers stay absolutely quiet and don't make any sounds. However, if I plug in a headset on the onboard soundcard jack the sounds work fine.
I have had this laptop with me on multiple trips but afaik this happened during one, so is it possible that something has disconnected inside the laptop itself or is it maybe a common bug with these laptops?

Sep 10, 2009Is it just me, or are the speakers on the SXPS13 very, very quiet? The max volume is on this thing is inadequate. I'm forced to use headphones.

Jan 20, 2009I'm thinking about getting one... but after browsing the internet a bit, I see some people saying that the speakers are absolutely hideous. I understand that sometimes only the people experiencing a problem speak up, and that might give me an unfairly bad impression of the speakers.
So I'm asking here. How are the Studio 15 speakers? I know that notebook speakers are usually not great, but how do they compare to the middle-of-the-road average notebook speakers?

Jan 23, 2009The speakers in the studio 15 are pretty bad, worse than any other laptop I've ever used (worse than my cell-phone)... and I've never even used the Dell audio drivers which are supposed to be even worse. I've picked up a set of Logitech V20 speakers which are great, but it would be nice to upgrade the stock speakers.
I've started doing some digging ... the speakers are part number Dell part D954D made by Veco (http://www.veco.com.tw/all-index.htm) which makes a lot of small speakers and custom notebook mounts .....

The dust just gets stuck in the little holes, and I can not remove it.
Quite annoying, specially since the notebook is all black and the dust is usually white.

Apr 17, 2009The speakers on my laptop are not working. The weird thing is the sound works when I plug in my headphones in either headphone jack (so that's good news, I suppose). But when I unplug the headphones, no sound.
Here's the thing; you know those media buttons that make that little beep whenever you touch any of them? Well, they work fine (volume up and down, mute, DVD and QuickPlay), but no beep sound from them either!

I have the speakers at 100% and the YouTube volume at 100% too, and I started to look at the Control Panel options but none of them really worked. Feb 21, 2009I've been reading a lot of complaints on the volume of Dell Studio's speakers being barely audible. One of the ways to solve this problem is to uninstall the original IDT sound card driver provided by Dell.
But I realised that one of the headphone jacks on the Studio will no longer function if you uninstall the driver. So, let me present you guys with another simply solution that works (I hope). Make sure you've the IDT driver installed on your system.
1. Right click on the volume icon in the taskbar and select "Playback Devices".

I followed this dude's instructions, and just like that the SOUND drastically IMPROVED!! Sound is much more crisp, LOUDER, and improved bass.
All you have to do is use the Default Microsoft Vista drivers instead of the crap Dell Drivers..Just uninstall the Dell Sound drivers, and restart the machine..Vista should automatically put the default one's in..

Mar 25, 2009I just purchased a new Dell Studio 1537 and it arrived a few days ago. I was wondering if anyone else has the plastic on the speakers and media buttons flexing and bulge out. The keyboard kind of rises up in the top middle as well, and the volume buttons are higher up. If I run my finger across the entire speaker set it does not feel like a flat surface. Are all the laptops like this or should I ask for a replacement?

As soon as I received it, I formated the drive and installed Windows XP Pro SP3. So far so good. All drivers installed, everything working.
Except for one little detail : I have sound on subwoofer only, no speaker, not even on headphones, no matter what jack I plug in. Sub does turn off when I plug the headphones though.
I tried several IDT drivers, all act the same.

Aug 10, 2011X220 tablet (about 2.5 yrs old, out of warranty) was working completely fine last night; this morning, no sound is coming from the laptop, either through speakers or through headphones (audio jack). Â I am, however, able to get sound through a bluetooth-connected speaker.

I had hoped this was a software issue. Â Tried uninstalling/installing all sound devices, updating BIOS, updating drivers, system restore to previous date, rebooting a million times, etc. Â No joy.

When I run the sound troubleshooter, it says that no speaker, headset, or headphone appears to be plugged in. Â The sound icon has a little red circle/white X next to it. Â When I try to plug in headphones, nothing happens -- does not seem to detect the event. Â When I press the mute and volume buttons on the tablet, no response.

Also, under Device Manager -> Sound, video and game controllers, it lists only "Bluetooth Hands-free Audio" and "Intel Display Audio". Â I don't think either of these is the normal X220 audio driver, is it? Â What else should be there? Â I downloaded the Conexant Audio Software from Lenovo's site (this is what came up when I searched for audio drivers for the X220 tablet), and tried to install it, but halfway through, it said the install failed because it couldn't locate the device for the driver.

This sounds like it's a hardware problem -- any way to verify? Â Also, which piece of hardware exactly? Â Is it the sound card (that's presumably integrated into the motherboard --> no easy fix)? Â I'm guessing it's not the speakers themselves since the headphone jack is also affected, but what is my best line of testing at this point to confirm that?
