Dell :: Do All Studio XPS 16 Have Unbalanced Left And Right Speakers
Feb 14, 2009
Is there any Studio XPS 1640 users out there who gets perfectly balanced sounds from their left and right speakers?
My right speaker's volume is louder by default. Yes, I can adjust the balance using one of Windows' sound configuration screen, but it's annoying to have it reconfigured back whenever I plug a headphones.

I've been listening to a bunch of podcasts on my laptop lately and realized that the right hand side speaker is MUCH louder than my than the left speaker, in fact if I lower the balance on the right speaker to 0% and left to 100% it's not half as loud as the right at 100%. Is this normal? If not is there a fix for this?
Also when typing, if I press the Caps lock key too fast the cursor disappears and my typing is interrupted anyone know is up with that?

I have find myself struggling to open links in new tabs with Firefox and IE because the keyboard shortcut to perform this action is Right CTRL + Mouse Click.
Is there anyway I can swap the Left and Right CTRL assignments around in Windows?

I used my Studio 1535 without problem about 4-5 months and temperatures were fine. But from some time I have very strange problem. First my charger became relatively very hot, my mother consider it as very hot as well.
After my hard disk becomes hot 39-40 C, and now I guess as result from fan system and HDD high temperature, my left palm rest (typically warm on most notebooks) is hot too.

I have a dell Studio 1558 laptop. I'm extremely careful not to have liquids anywhere near my keyboard. Â However I was drinking tea and felt I was far enough back that liquids should not even reach the laptop. I was probably about a foot back. Well one of my cats nudged my arm and hit it with enough force that a few drops hit the touch pad. Â I cleaned it up. Â This morning I turn my laptop on and now my left touch pad button does not work. I figured that I probably needed to clean it. So I pried the button off gently. Â And used a little rubbing alcohol on a q-tip and cleaned it off. When I pried it up it didn't look really dirty at all. There was no residue on the inside that I could see. Â I put the button back on, and it still doesn't work. Â So now I'm wondering if enough got inside to actually cause damage or if it's just coincidental that the button stopped working at the same time? Â I used it all the time for copying stuff and scrolling. I can use all the other buttons and scroll without using it.
Should the cleaning underneath have cured it if it was the liquid? If the liquid got past the underneath of the key itself then it should have affected the whole key pad not just one key, right?

Is it just me, or are the speakers on the SXPS13 very, very quiet? The max volume is on this thing is inadequate. I'm forced to use headphones.
Has anyone else had a problem with this? Is there anything to be done about it?

I'm thinking about getting one... but after browsing the internet a bit, I see some people saying that the speakers are absolutely hideous. I understand that sometimes only the people experiencing a problem speak up, and that might give me an unfairly bad impression of the speakers.
So I'm asking here. How are the Studio 15 speakers? I know that notebook speakers are usually not great, but how do they compare to the middle-of-the-road average notebook speakers?
How do those new LED screens they're offering on the Studio 15s look?)

The speakers in the studio 15 are pretty bad, worse than any other laptop I've ever used (worse than my cell-phone)... and I've never even used the Dell audio drivers which are supposed to be even worse. I've picked up a set of Logitech V20 speakers which are great, but it would be nice to upgrade the stock speakers.
I've started doing some digging ... the speakers are part number Dell part D954D made by Veco (http://www.veco.com.tw/all-index.htm) which makes a lot of small speakers and custom notebook mounts .....

I keep getting dust in my Studio XPS Speakers.
The dust just gets stuck in the little holes, and I can not remove it.
Quite annoying, specially since the notebook is all black and the dust is usually white.

I've been reading a lot of complaints on the volume of Dell Studio's speakers being barely audible. One of the ways to solve this problem is to uninstall the original IDT sound card driver provided by Dell.
But I realised that one of the headphone jacks on the Studio will no longer function if you uninstall the driver. So, let me present you guys with another simply solution that works (I hope). Make sure you've the IDT driver installed on your system.
1. Right click on the volume icon in the taskbar and select "Playback Devices".

As you prob realized already, the SOUND Quality sux on the 1535's..I was googlin' around and came across this fix on how to improve the sound.
[url]
I followed this dude's instructions, and just like that the SOUND drastically IMPROVED!! Sound is much more crisp, LOUDER, and improved bass.
All you have to do is use the Default Microsoft Vista drivers instead of the crap Dell Drivers..Just uninstall the Dell Sound drivers, and restart the machine..Vista should automatically put the default one's in..

I just purchased a new Dell Studio 1537 and it arrived a few days ago. I was wondering if anyone else has the plastic on the speakers and media buttons flexing and bulge out. The keyboard kind of rises up in the top middle as well, and the volume buttons are higher up. If I run my finger across the entire speaker set it does not feel like a flat surface. Are all the laptops like this or should I ask for a replacement?

The left speaker on my Dell XPS M1330 went silent some time ago for all sound sources (Window Media, iTunes, QuickTime) without so much as a crackle.
I suspect that either the speaker itself died or the connecting wire has been dislodged. Do these suspicions seem plausible? Are there other causes I need to consider?
I want to check the connecting left speaker wire and re-attach it, if applicable. Can someone provide me a URL to diagrams that illustrate the speaker wires and their attachments clearly? I tried a Google search without success.

Does anyone or have anyone had their left side speaker replaced with DYI. I need a new left side speaker cause mines blew up.
If I were to call dell and order a new one, is it going to be hard to replace or can someone share some pictures with instructions! By the way would the speaker need to include the LED lightings too?

Whenever I'm viewing the smallest things, like images or even streaming on youtube. The far left fan goes into gear -- but it sounds like it's hitting a wire, making a loud and obnoxious grinding sound.
And recently my computer would go at 100% CPU Usage, requiring me to restart a couple of times until it became neutral.
Any ideas other than opening the computer?
I'm using an Inspiron 1520. It's 2 years old.

My 1530 has recently been overheating when left idle for a while(30 min or so). When I come back I find that the fans stop working, the system overheats and the laptop restarts with blazing temperatures.
In order to turn the fans back on, I have to shutdown the laptop and then switch it back on

The left mouse button on my m1530 has taken a battering. It has gone all lop-sided, crunches every time I press it, and now doesn't work at all unless I press down on it very very hard with two fingers.
I work fast, so this is an incredibly frustrating thing to happen, as everything now takes ten times longer to do.

I have noticed however that a few people have complained that the left palm rest of the Vostro 1520 is too hot. One person measured it to be 103 deg F

I think I've bent one of the metal connecting parts on the actual keyboard too, so I think I'll need to replace the whole thing and not just the key.
In either case this key is not getting back on. Do current Dell Latitudes use the same keyboard, or am I going to have a hell of a time finding a replacement?
I took the key off because the button wasn't working, and sure enough there was a big wad of dust/hair blocking it...problem is I think I was too forceful when I removed it.
Notebook is a 2003 model.

Recently got a Latitude E6400 w/ 2.66Ghz, 4GB RAM, nvidia 160m, 250GB (7200rpm). The left Palm rest is often very hot to keep my hand on it. I even use Antec Laptop cooler pad.
Checking temperatures using speedfan, I have following temps when the left palm rest is hot:
GPU - 55-60C
HDD - 42C
Temp1: 37C
Core 0: 32C
Core 1: 38C

This sticker (the one saying "regulatory information...." in 50 languages)
would NOT come off by trying to pick at the corners. It was leaving the sticky part on.
When I pulled at the "tab" built into the sticker, I got that off but it left the whole rectangle sticky part on the laptop. In other words, the whole printed part of the sticker came off leaving all the clear sticky material on the palm rest still.
I kept picking at the corners trying to grab them but no luck.
What finally worked was sliding my fingers while pushing on the surface of the palmrest, upward, into the bottom of the sticker. In other words, press your finger on the plastic of the laptop just below the sticky stuff left behind. Keep sliding your finger while pushing on the plastic INTO the bottom line of the sticky part. It will eventually start to roll up. Do this all along the bottom edge of the sticky part and eventually you can grab the "rolled up edge" and pull at it. It should then pull off in one piece. There will be little tiny sticky marks left on the plastic but they come right up when you place the sticky rectangle piece down onto it and pull fast up.

So yeah I wasn't exactly handling the thing with utmost care, was holding the open laptop one-handed by the left front corner, heard a plastic snap sound... I press down on the flat black plastic area where your left palm would rest, just above the PC card slot.. it's a bit squishy. Does it flex for yours too, am I paranoid? Its not a problem just wondering...

Yesterday while I was working on a spreadsheet, the left button of my trackpad on my Dell XPS 15z just mysteriously stopped working. Â I assumed that maybe my system was slowing down, as I tend to multitask and often will have a LOT going on at once. Â So I restarted, since it had been about a three days since my system was restarted. Â Anyway, it did no good. Â Still, the left button wasn't working.
So, I then pressed it SUPER hard and it started working. Â Today, I noticed that it was messing up again. Â However now, depressing the key good and hard doesn't seem to magically fix the situation. Â Moreover, it doesn't work at all now instead of intermittent workability.
There wasn't any sort of update or anything... Â I'm really confused. Â Right button has no issues, but clearly I need both. Â Not sure what I should do.

I've had my M1530 for about 5 months and in the last few days and have had a problem with the screen.
Twice in the last 3-4 days I have come home from work to find the left hand side of the screen substantially dimme(darker.
The screen was left on regular settings, no screen saver etc. Within 5 minutes of use the left hand side of the screen had returned to normal brightness..
