Dell :: Far Left Fan Making Grinding Noises
Nov 20, 2009
Whenever I'm viewing the smallest things, like images or even streaming on youtube. The far left fan goes into gear -- but it sounds like it's hitting a wire, making a loud and obnoxious grinding sound.
And recently my computer would go at 100% CPU Usage, requiring me to restart a couple of times until it became neutral.
Any ideas other than opening the computer?
I'm using an Inspiron 1520. It's 2 years old.

So a few days ago, my computer just all of a sudden began making a
strange "grinding/crunching" sound which seems to be coming from the top left side of the computer. The sound is very clear especially from the back left corner vent. The noise seems to come and go but still has me very worried. I've read this noise may indicate a dieing hard drive, however tests came by negative and also the hard drive for this notebook is in the middle, not toward the top left. Anyway, I recorded the sound twice and was wondering if you could take a look and tell me what you guys think (you might wanna turn your volume up). I have an HP Dv7t

I just purchased the Dell XPS 13 Ultrabook and I hear a lot of high-pitched noises coming from the keyboard, i think from the right side, but hard to tell. It is really noticable in a quite room, and isn't a solid tone, it has a super short pause in it every second or so, but overall very consistant. It isn't the fan, and when I use Fn F2 to disable wireless/bluetooth it gets a little quiter, and seems a little more constant in the tone. It also isn't the lighted keyboard, it still does it with that off. It also does it when using A/C or battery.
So it might be a combination of the harddrive and wireless and bluetooth, or maybe some other circuits, but it is very annoying. I've seem some others post online about this as well, and am hoping Dell has a way to correct this somehow, but I don't have a lot of hope that a software or firmware update can fix this.
Are others hearing this too? I know some people are more sensitive to these types of noices, but if you put your ear to the keyboard in a quite room, you will hear it. I can hear it when I am sitting up typing at the keyboard, I just put my ear to the keyboard to better tell where it is coming from to describe it.

I just bought an HP touchsmart pavilion N229tx last week and I noticed now that it started creating grinding noises every 3 seconds whenever my laptop is on and running. The noise is coming from near the vent where the air is supposed to come out.
Also when I bought the laptop and opened it the first time I keep having the fan error upon startup saying that it had found that a fan is not operational I think it is error 90B. this now happens everytime I turn on the laptop.

I just received a new XPS 1340. It's got the TS-H553A DVD burner drive. However, I think there might be a problem with it. It makes a weird scratching noise with most discs - almost like a power saw cutting through wood - and it rips CD audio at 1.5x.

I've had this aspire 7720-6381 for about a week and a half now. I've been very satisfied, and have even been content with the mediocre laptop speakers it contains. I wasn't expecting much in that realm anyways.
The problem I have is that periodically the speakers will make an annoying clicking noise. It's pretty sucky. Even worse, after a time all sound will screw up and a deathly fuzzy roaring sound is all that is heard.

A few weeks ago I spilled green tea (no milk or sugar) on the desk around my Acer Aspire 5920 laptop. The tea went into the back left quarter of the machine, mainly through the ventilation holes and the ports on the left side. I removed the battery, drained the liquid, and let the machine dry out thoroughly. Since then the machine has worked fine. However, it occasionally makes strange noises, especially on start up. It's a fizzing/popping noise, in short bursts, like static. It sounds as if it's coming from the loudspeaker.
does anyone know the machine well enough to diagnose the fault? Only the components in the back left quarter of the machine got wet. Could there still be water in there? Is the noise a sign of a serious problem? What can I do to fix it? As I said, the spill happened several weeks ago, and, apart from the noise, the machine works fine.

i have a DVD+CD writer/reader in my laptop. I barely ever use it but i wanted to back up my iTunes library to a couple of DVDs this morning so i used Nero to do so. At 91% the drive started doing this thing where it would spin really quick, stop, start, make an awful grinding noise for a second, then repeat the same thing over again. After about 10 min of this, the CPU went up to 100% and slowed the computer down to the point where everything froze. So i tried ejecting the DVD but it didn't work so i used a pin to force it open. I tried 3 times on 3 DVDs with no luck..It did however burn a CD successfully which is weird.
I just tried burning another DVD and it stopped at 91% and started the grinding noise again then said the burning failed.

I have had my HP HDX16 for almost a year, probably 10 months. I can still send it in for repairs because the warranty is still in place.
Recently the fan has started to make some funny noise and it sounds more like a grinding sound that is subtle but still noticable. I was thinking of sending it in for repair, but when I sent my computer in last time they formatted everything just to replace the screen when I told them not to, so I really would just see if I can repair the issue myself and save myself the trouble of having to reinstall and download everything again.
How easy will it be to take off the bottom to get to the fan? I already blew air into and that made it go from loud to subtle, but it seems like it might be grinding against something or hitting something. Sometime if I tap on the area to the top left of the power button it will stop it for a couple of minutes.

There is a loud griding noise whenever my wife's brand new Yoga 13 is titled in any direction. It seems like a simple gyroscopic effect causing the fan to bang in to case. It also seems like something that shouldn't be happening.

I just setup my brand new M6400 (well brand new from dell outlet). My config is QX9300, Dual HardDrives (primary is SSD), Nvidia 2700. I connected two external monitors using ePort plus dock and as I begin working on this new setup,
I notice a faint (but irritating once your ears tune in) churning/hissing/clicking (hard to describe) sound from the system. I have updated Bios to latest version. Os is Win 7 64bit.

There is an intermittent (almost rhythmic) high-pitched whining noise coming from my E6400. It is extremely hard to determine the exact location of the noise. It seems loudest on the left side of the base, but with your ear near the laptop, it is audible pretty much everywhere. It is very quiet, and I wouldn't mind it at all if I couldn't also hear the noise through the headphone jack. I have had it since I bought the machine (from the outlet a couple weeks ago). I mentioned it when I sent it to the repairs depot for overheating issues, but apparently they ignored my notes (they also ignored my third issue, a wobbling of the base).
I am running Windows XP Pro SP 3. Can anyone listen for similar noises in their own E6400's? Just plug in some decent quality in ear monitors or headphones and let me know if you hear the noise.
Okay, I listened for the sound while running stress tests on the CPU and ram, and the noises change. In fact, it became clear to me that there are actually two noises, but they usually happen simultaneously, so it is hard to distinguish between them normally. One is a short, quiet squeak, the other is a longer, louder and more irritating whining noise. They latter disappears when I run the stress test. I'm not sure what this reveals. I also updated BIOS and nothing changed.
The sound disappears when running when in Safe Mode w/ networking.

I have inspiron 9300 and when I play mp3's on the laptop it makes a crackling and poping noise every 1-3 seconds, when it does this it pauses the song about 1/2-1 seconds each time it makes this noise. It also does this when I play my ripped dvd's on the harddrive and playing video games, it pauses the movies and games 1/2-1 seconds seconds during the crackling and popping noises. I can temporarily fix this sometimes when I take the harddrive out for about 8-9 hrs and put back in again, but after I reboot or turn it off and turn it on again the crackling and popping noises come back. When I play dvd's or cd music in the optical drive this doesnt happen. What can I do to fix this?

Got my XPS 15 less than a month ago, been playing some games and some light 3D and graphic work on it. I'm considered having worked the laptop a little more than normal word-processing or web-browsing - not stretching it by any means (not yet anyway).
To deal with the heat, I've lifted the rear of the base up with some small EVA laptop pads about 1cm high.
Just 2 days ago, I've encountered a louder-than usual rattling fan noise coming from the right-hand fan at the base. It sounds kind of like the one in this video, changing frequencies as I rotate the unit around in my hands :
cs_setInnerHtml('video_beacedb8-977f-4b3c-9e04-395c4b1c47a3','');
When I run 3D games, the fans get loud (as per usual) that the rattling sort of "blends into" all that noise, but when web-browsing, the rattling is quite apparent - no longer just a soft whir. There is a slight vibration coming from the right side, if I lay my palms flat on the keyboard.
I've emailed tech support, got a ticket number, but no response so far. Will wait another day before calling. At times like this, I wish Dell had a bricks and mortar outlet that I could bring the laptop to to get it fixed.

This is a very strange one , I have a Studio 17, and it has never had any kind of noises coming from the inside, however, in the past few weeks I have been hearing beeps that are coming from inside the laptop not from the speakers. Its a single beep, and does not have a pattern such as beep every 4 or 5 seconds it beeps when it feels like beeping, usually one short beep.
I called Dell, and the tech guy told me that beeping was " normal " and I should not be concerned over it. Can you believe that jerk? "beeping sounds from inside are normal "? I dont think so.
I have tried to think of anything inside this thing that can beep or why I would be getting these beeps and I cant come up with a thing. Originally I thought it was possibly a CMOS battery going bad, but Dell says the battery wont make it beep, then I thought maybe its overheating, but then when I feel the laptop its' barely warm, so Im at a loss.
This beeping is intermittent, it will beep for a while, then stop, then later on or the next day it might beep again for a few hours then stop again.
Anyone have any suggestions on what could beep from inside the laptop? the sound seems to be right near where the hard drives are located if I put my ear to the touchpad area I think thats the area it originates in.

I have a new M1530 and I just have a couple of minor issues.
Firstly, the harddrive always makes noises (like it is thinking) even when the computer is idle. It's not loud and just sounds like normal access sounds, but it makes a little noise every 2 seconds or so. Is this normal and can I make it stop? Like I said, the noise sounds like a normal HD noise, but it just never shuts up.
Finally, has anyone had problems connecting to wireless networks in vista? I have connected my laptop to 2 networks already and it was fine, but now when I try and connect to my main network, it asks for "additional log on information", including a username, password and domain. I don't have this info and have only ever used a WEP key...

I am about to order an XPS 1530 with the 320 GB 5.400 rpm harddrive, but I have heard that these make some really annoying noises from time to time, so my question is - is that normal or are these harddrives sort of defective? And I have only heard of that issue regarding the said 320 GB model. What if I buy a 400 GB hard drive? Do these make these noises as well? I am really concerned right now because I have heard quite a few things about the XPS 1530 that just didn't sound right... like the DVD drive noises, the hard drive noises, the display lottery...
here is another question but I don't want to start another thread:
I'll be using Photoshop a lot, so will I experience a big difference between the T8300 and the T9300 processor? I know this has been asked before but all I found out was that there will be virtually no difference in gaming.

I've got an HP dv9685eo. Recently the fan has started to make strange noises. Kind of like a drilling noise - I'm not sure how to explain it. Kind of like it's hitting something when spinning. I once had a desktop computer which started to make fan noises as well. I resolved that by cleaning the fan. That computer's warranty had expired, however, and I am reluctant to open my laptop because it still has warranty. I need my computer every day and my laptop is my only one, so I don't like the idea about sending it in for repair. Can they see if I open the case and take a look inside it? There aren't any stickers on it (at least not on the outside). Will opening it even void warranty or is it only if I start to remove/add/replace hardware in it?

I'll start off with a quick "thanks" to everyone here for all the great info - was a big help when selecting a laptop to purchase! Now my issues...
Just got a refurbed E6400 in the mail from Dell Outlet. First odd thing I noticed is that it sometimes randomly makes a quick succession of rapid clicking type sounds (sounds kind of like HDD activity) followed by a beep that doesn't come from the laptop speakers because they are muted.
This little pattern happens anywhere from 3 to as much as ~12 times. Nothing bad seems to come of it yet, but its annoying and would be somewhat disrupting to classes if I use it for note-taking. This has happened maybe 4-5 times in the 3 hours that I've had the computer.
Any ideas what this might be? Note that I recently got a BSOD (yes, within HOURS of using the machine!) and since then I haven't experienced the noises, but then again the BSOD was only ~30 mins ago .......

2 days ago I was given a new work laptop - the E7440 (its brand new).
Straight away I noticed some loud buzzing noises which a fellow colleague said was the fan. It's quite annoying. I soon noticed however when my laptop was idle these noises would stop, and when I clicked they would start again. Whenever I ask the Laptop to do anything these noises start up, and considering im active on the machine all day.
There are high pitched, buzzing noises. And as mentioned are aligned to when the laptop is processing something. They also make sounds when I scroll the mouse for example.

I have recently bought a new Dell Inspiron 11 3147. Everything was fine for about an hour (created my MS Windows account, installed some apps, laptop was perfectly quiet), until I decided to play some music from YouTube. The sound was really cracking and from that point the laptop constantly makes quiet buzzing/cracking noise (it does not come from speakers!), just like HDD is reading data very fast or the fan was damaged. Sometimes music is played fine, and sometimes (i dont know what it depends on) sound is crackling even more.
Plus when the computer starts, the fan noise is quite buzzing too.
I don't know what could be the problem since it all started when I played music, I dont know what makes music crackle too! I tried to reinstall sound drivers but I guess it's not the driver, since the buzz is there even when Windows is not loaded.

I have 130W(model DA130PE1-00) dell orginal PSU and dell e6540.
When i plug in PSU into my notebook, then i turn it on, and after windows loads, it starting to make strange noise. after it warm up to 30 deegres of celsius, it stops making it
I have noticed that loudness of the noise is inversly proportional to load and temperature. When PSU is cold and notebook is idling - it makes the strange noise. When PSU cold and noteboot is under moderate load - it stops making it. When PSU is warm (about 30 deegres of celsius) and is idling - i need to PSU at front of my ear.
The noise seems to coming from AC connector's side (Where PSU have connector for AC cable). PSU doesn't make this noise when i put it off from notebook.
Why PSU does make such noise? Why it is inversly proportional to temperature and load ? This is dangerous to me and my notebook ?
Exactly it looks like:
1. I turn on my notebook under AC, the PSU is making "click sound" till it become warmer.
2. After that there is buzzing sound, that is not as loud as clicking (i have to put ear at front of my PSU), and the buzzing sound is inversly proportional to load of the PSU.
