Jun 15, 2008This guide is made based on an Acer Aspire 5315, but will probably work on other machines with a hidden eisa rescue partition.
This is for everyone who has got problems unhiding and accessing the hidden rescue partition, and have tried all the methods with d2d disabling and changing partition type, perhaps with partedit32 or ptedit32, only to find out that nothing has happened after rebooting.
Download and install "Diskpart" from Microsoft, a small but powerful textbased utility, the link below is a direct download:

Here's the step by step to succeed...
Press "win + r" to bring up the run window
Type: "cmd", to bring up the command window
Type: "diskpart", a new command window pops up with a "Diskpart >" prompt
Type: "rescan", a configuration check runs
Type: "list disk", a list of the availible disks appears
Type: "select disk 0", if your hidden partition resides on that disk of course
Type: "list partition", to find out with partition is your hidden one (probably about 10 gb and without name).......................

How can I tell if I have the Arcade Utility or not even though the button is there? The WLAN and internet buttons work but not the bluetooth or arcade ones. I'v not found any answers on the web.

Apr 24, 2009I have E6400 with Vista Ultimate.
it's really frustrating me. When I download/save something to desktop, Windows will find an area to save on the desktop. However, I recently noticed that Vista sometimes save the file in the very bottom of the desktop and behind the taskbar. So the file is hidden behind taskbar.
From my understanding, taskbar must be on TOP of everything. See attachment so you guys can understand better.

there is no physical button to turn bluetooth but only the airplane mode... common guys, no one really  uses airplane mode daily but  bluetooth.

Mar 13, 2009Let me first start by asking your forgiveness if I have stuffed this quick little guide in the wrong spot. I spent a rather brief 10 minutes searching this forum, and I don't believe I am repeating a write-up someone has already done that follows this simple method. If I am incorrect, I ask a moderator to please place this post in its proper home. As you can see, I am not an avid poster here, and I really don't want to be slammed for not searching with enough gusto, etc.
Alright, on to the quick 'n easy...
I have a new VGN-AW235J, so proceed with courage and fortitude if our letters don't match. I found this as I was trying various ways to cleanse this beautiful machine of it's bloatware. It worked for me, and that is all I will claim.
This method requires that you create the restore DVDs.
If you don't have a handful of restore DVDs, go do that now and come back...and while you're up, bring a snack.
One more disclaimer: I didn't take the greatest notes while doing this, so my instructions may be sufficiently vague to cause minor trepidation on the part of the reader. With that being said, each step should be fairly obvious while in front of your machine...DVDs in hand..........................

I know there are some OC guides out there, but this laptop is almost 3 years old, and as far as I can tell does not have an option in the BIOS. Jun 30, 2009Ive just about had it with Vista on my laptop and want to try a new OS before I junk this thing. Is anyone running Win7 or Ubuntu on a HP DV5z AMD 64 bit laptop? The machine is about a year old and I have 4gb of RAM and the thing is a dog. Ive used Ubuntu in the past on Dell laptops and its a pain to get everything running wireless drivers, flash, etc. Win7 being a RC may or may not have everything up to speed on for my machine.
So, if you have Win7 or Ubuntu on a HP DV5z please give me a shout, good or bad.

Other than 17 vs 16 inch screen are their any benefits to build quality from 1 to the other?
I will be travelling so I would prefer the lesser HDX 16 incher but build quality is a concern

Jul 14, 2009I'm am deciding whether to buy this laptop for school use. It has a great size, stylish, and decent specs for a laptop that is so lightweight. The only turn off is that it was made for entertainment, but should this laptop do well for word processing, spreadsheets, and web surfing?
Would the 9 cell battery last for more than 5-6 hours? My budget is also under 700$ but it can stretch a little.

Jul 29, 2009I'm heading off to school, and these stylish, affordable notebooks have caught my eyes. The only problem is that I only get 2-3 hours of battery life on these notebooks although I can buy an extra battery. What I"m mainly doing is word processing, spreadsheets, iTunes, and web browsing but not all at the same time.
Here are my main questions and concerns:
Do these notebooks have good build quality?Is there any other way to charge the battery without having it in the notebook?Do they get hot?
I may have more questions to ask later.
I am buying this notebook in Canada.
Seeing that the battery tests I've seen on some reviews, they are surfing the internet with Wi-Fi on. I will not be, I'll usually be word processing. Should it last maybe 3 hours?

Oct 25, 2009I own a DV7-1038CA, I actually decided to buy it after reading what people said about the DV7s on this forum. Unfortunately I have a problem .
I had opened up my DV7 to clean out the fan ( ****load of dust in there) and took the whole laptop apart. I put it back together and it worked perfectly fine for about 10 hours. The laptop worked great until I dropped it down on my table at a height of about 1 1/2 inches, not a significant height but the screen immediately turned white and the laptop shut off completely. It would not turn on at all, the power light would blink for less than a second and turn off and then I'd have to wait 30 seconds before I could get it to blink again.
I then took the laptop apart again and this time I checked if everything was plugged in properly. I decided to leave the unnecessary covers off so I could turn it on without having to screw it all back on, it turned for about 3 seconds....before I noticed the display cable to my screen was on the heat sink and had caught fire. I immediately turned it off but the damage had already been done, the fire had burnt through the wiring on the inside of the cable rendering my screen useless ( whenever it was plugged the charging light on the side of the laptop would turn off). At this point the laptop was turning on but would turn off after about 5 seconds (probably due to the fact that there was no screen) During this little fiasco I had ripped off the ZIF cable that connects the power button board to the Motherboard. So now I had no way to turn my laptop on, I ordered a new screen and a new power button board.......

Jan 21, 2009Looked at the HP DV6 today at circuit while browsing liquidation sales. Looks like a nice laptop. 16inch screen is nice, looks like less vertical screen but web pages look nice. Just a DV5 with a bigger screen?
