HP/Compaq :: HP Envy 15 Flash Video Performance On Battery
Apr 30, 2010
Playing an SWF (flash) file with video embedded in on AC power looks great. When unplugging the power and working on battery, the same video becomes very sluggish and unwatchable.
I've checked all power setting and ATI control panel and changed all "Optimize video on battery" I could find.

Looking to pick up a notebook for almost the sole purpose of hooking up to an HDTV over HDMI and watching online streaming video. I was looking at the dv2z but the slower processor was a concern for Flash-based video and other processor intensive streaming video. Am I safe going with the dv2z, or should I be looking at the dv3z? Or even the dv4t? All three seem to be in the same approximate price range. More compact is better, but acceptable performance is most important.

my computer screen has either been doing a brief flash or weird movement and then locks itself up. Everything is running but the screen, which is frozen in place (the mouse icon is also frozen). I was wondering if anyone had suggestions on how to fix this. I thought it was an overheating problem, but it's sitting at 53•C and still does it. It started doing this when I was playing WoW (only while playing), but that was 3-4 weeks ago and until now the computer worked fine.
It will also no longer restart itself; it goes through the shut down process but then basically powers off as if I just turned it off versus shutting down turned off (this laptop has distinctive sounds for both which is how I can tell). Normally I can wait a minute or two and then turn it back on and it boots up (if I try to turn it on right after it cuts off after a second). Now however, it gets to the first logo then cuts off. I have used compressed air to blow in the vents to get rid of dust if that might be a factor.

Recently purchased DV4-1000ea as follows;
2.26Ghz P8400 Core2Duo
2GB RAM
250GB HDD
256MB Dedicated (1024MB Shared) NVidia 9200m GS.
I liked the idea of the laptop having a HDMI output to connect to my TV to watch movies etc downloaded on iTunes. I thought the graphics card was going to be ample given that my housemates Macbook with 32mb shared graphics works just fine.
However, I am really disappointed with the graphics performance playing High quality video, in particular, H264 Quicktime files.
For example, I have downloaded a few 720p trailers from the apple website and torrent sites and when playing, the videos are choppy in most scenes and speech is not in sync with video a lot of the time. This is true for display on the laptop screen, as well as display on TV via HDMI.
I have checked CPU usage whilst such clips are playing and it's running quite comfortably at 40-50%.
I have downloaded the latest NVidea drivers from the NVidia website (version 7928).
Also, even music video previews in itunes (and subsequent previews) are choppy and out of sync whilst playing. I have tried apples suggestions of turning off 3d accleleration for DirectX but it makes things worst.

Dv5t, the problem of having non-optimal /under par performance of Nvidia Graphics accelerator 9200/9600 used with Windows Vista.
I have done some troubleshooting myself, but yet to find a working solution.
My configuration is :
Pavilion Dv5t CTO Notebook.
15.4" diagonal WSXGA+ LCD.
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor P7350 (2.0GHz)
Current Running Resolution 1680 x 1050.
3GB system RAM.
NVIDIA GeForce 9200M GS with 256 MB of RAM.
Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit.
The degraded performance I am talking about is not specifically for games and 3D applications. Nor is playing games and running 3D rendering my primary purpose. The various benchmarks and tests mentioned at this site maybe more directed towards running specific games and other applications............

I'm a little sick of sub-par Flash performance on mac. I'm aware of the Adobe-Apple catfight.
Using a mid-2009 15" with a C2D at 2.53 GHz alongside Nvidia's 9400 M, Firefox 3.6.3 on OS X 10.6.3. Flash version is 10.0.45.2 -- the most recent release version. Have tried the 10.1 beta (and newer RC) with little change.
Streaming YouTube vids staggers every minute or two for a few seconds. This is not an issue I've had much, if any, of on a Windows box.
I've tried the about:config suggestion where you extend the time in which Firefox saves its state in case of a crash; still seeing the stuttering. Is this just a Firefox issue? Firefox + Mac issue?
I'd migrate to Chrome / Safari, but both browsers seem to render fonts smaller than Firefox does; Safari has a minimum font limit, but it seems like that's not always respected (or 9-point fonts are much smaller than I'd imagine).

I recently upgraded my wife's laptop from Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Ultimate and almost everything works fine on it. The one sticking point through has been the battery behaving oddly in Win7. The first thing is that the battery icon has a red X on it and when you hover over it it states that I should consider replacing my battery. When the laptop runs unplugged, it literally lasts 20 minutes before it powers itself off. This is a huge difference when it would last over 2 hours in Vista just before the upgrade.
I'm wondering if there are specific drivers I should install or downgrade even though everything in Device Manager no longer has any yellow exclamation marks (I had to install some drivers after installing Win7). FYI, this laptop is about 1.5 years old.
If I can't find a solution to the low battery performance, I may have to revert her laptop back to Vista which would totally negate the reason for buying Win7 in the first place for her machine.

my family are looking to chip in together to get my mom an e-reader for her birthday. Then we thought we'd look at the iPad. It's twice the cost, but it seems to do so much more. However, if we're gonna spend the money, I know she'd like to be able to watch Hulu shows and YouTube stuff.
In another post here someone mentioned that the iPad WILL play flash, although the Apple rep I talked to said it will not. If you have to do anything special or jump through hoops to make it work, then I'm not interested, but what is the case then and how do you make it work if at all?

I just need to verify my sanity by asking you how your Studio XPS 1640 with a t9800@2.93GHz and the 4670 ATI graphics card performs in general. I was playing Left4Dead and now I have the Left4Dead2 demo installed, and it just seems a little glitchy with both of them. I am running it at 1080p and graphics mostly on high, aside from shading and AA is off I believe, but it is still glitchy. The way the game recommends it to be run with my computer's specs is maxed out, however, its far too jerky and slow. Is there something stupid I may be doing wrong? Also, a friend with the studio 15 and a smaller cpu and the lower gpu seems to run it better, albeit on lower settings, but it just seems smoother.

I'm curious if the computer is powerful enough to handle fullscreen 720p x264 playback from iTunes and XBMC.
Also, is the SSD drive easily upgraded? (Is it a 2.5" model?) I find the 128GB limitation somewhat cramped.

I am considering a blu ray laptop. HP's DV7 comes with a 128MB dedicated video at Best Buy. The DV7 at Walmart comes with 1GB of dedicated video. Will the 1GB video be that much worse than 128MB for battery life?
The BB Laptop with 128MB says 5hrs 15min, the WM laptop does not say.

i've had my Envy 15 for over two months now and although i don't use it frequently enough my wife noticed that on a full charge, unplug then the next day or so the battery is drained.
Basically here is what she does:
she would charge the laptop up
unplug then use it for like 20 mins
shut down Start>>shutdown
CLose lid
About or two days later she would try to use it and the thing wont turn on. Plug in the brick and voila! thing comes up.
Is she not shutting down properly? or is there some program on sleep eating the battery?
Or is that the rate this battery drains?
this is still on the FACTORY image, i didnt rebuild it

looking at purchasing one from futureshop, getting a decent discount, it has the i7 6gb of ram, 4830 graphics. It comes with both 6 cell and 9 cell, my question is, that is there anyway for me to get 3 hours from the 6 cell battery, with just office and wifi. Is there a way to underclock the processor a lot to do this, disable cores temporarily

It will work fine for awhile then all of the sudden it will freeze.
I Googled this, and people said tick Enable Hardware Acceleration to off.
I did so but now the video is slow pretty much all the time. What is causing this? I upgraded my video drivers in the hopes of it solving this problem, but it did not

Problem: Video playback in flash players like www.dailymotion.com is choppy when notebook is running on battery. The same video playback is perfect when I connect the external power supply.

Now I haven't used my notebook on battery very often but judging by reviews and battery use here and there I do believe HP could've done better with designing their battery. I mean they can achieve up to 24 hrs with an elitebook (given its like a battery slice plus sticks out in the back) but don't even get close to a proper battery usage time with the standard battery. I've read reviews where the battery runs about 2hrs on battery and even some around just an hour, and that really is sad. I know the MacBook Pro was able to get about 7-8 hours out of a thin-n-light(given crappy hardware) so I know hp has the resources and capability to make this new battery. At least bring it out by the time the next gen Envys will come out and make sure these batteries will be backwards compatible with older Envys as well. Besides the battery life and locked multiplier I love my Envy

Does anyone have the Envy 15 along with the additional slab battery that connects to the bottom? Anyone found a sure proof way to connect it?
I latch the latches, battery is secure... However, it still says that the 2nd battery is not found. Move it around a bit, and then its there.... Wait, then its gone...

I just made a purchase of a 1410 for about $340 with an Intel Core 2 Solo SU3500 and 2GB ram. I plan to do a clean of install Windows 7 32-bit once I receive the laptop.
However one thing concerns me, how does the laptop fare with online Flash video streaming? I'm thinking it will do fine with 360p and 480p streaming, but is it able to run 720p or even 1080p smoothly?
Also, is this model able to multi-task somewhat? I'm not looking for anything extreme, but I'm wondering more about running multiple tabs in a browser or running Office apps with internet surfing, etc.
If not playable out of the box, are there tweaks to get HD flash playback smooth? I've heard of the new Adobe Flash 10.1 helping out with performance somewhat, but I'm wondering if it's a long wait before a cheap (sub-$400) netbook/sub-notebook can stream HD flash well that isn't an ION with Atom.
I've heard great reviews on the 1410 and like the purchase, but was just curious about some of the performance situations stated above.

My Envy has the i7-720QM processor. I noticed significant reduced performance when running on battery.
RealTemp, Sandra, i7Turbo, Intel turbo boost monitor, cpuid, etc.. all report the multiplier at 7 (~930MHz), and won't move from there no matter what I do on the machine.
The multiplier seems locked/fixed at 7 regardless of load. As soon as it is unplugged it dives to 7.
I've changed the power plan to high performance and set min/max power management to 100%. This made no difference.
Is the BIOS forcing this? I believe 7 is the low frequency multiplier but shouldn't this kick in only is there is no activity (to save power?). If I am doing work, I expect the processor to at least run at the minimum frequency specified.
This behavior has been confirmed now by other members of the forum. Previos BIOS releases (F.05 and F.06) have been tested and showed the same issue.
I attached two screenshots, one the system running on power, and the other one on battery. Both running prime95 small FFTs.

I have a v3 571G laptop core i7 with a geforce 640m video card. Is not the faster video card but can handle advance video games in medium to high. Every time I play any video games, with settings from medium to high, at the beginning the fps are around 34 to 40 but after 10 to 20 min of playing, the fps gets down to 12 to 20 specially when there is explosions and such. Is my laptop video card dying or is something else?

I just got a new envy 15 the other day. There is a high pitched noise that is kind of annoying, but I'll be using the laptop at a cafe 90% of the time and probably won't notice it. I'm pretty happy with the laptop otherwise.
Does anybody have any tips on increasing the battery life? Other than screen brightness and lowering the "maximum processor state" in the power plan, are there any other settings i should be aware of? I've read posts claiming to have increased battery life of an i7 envy 15 to 4-5+ hours. I think I'll be pretty happy if I can squeeze 3+ hours on my i5...

I spent a couple hours reading through dozens of pages in the 3 separate HP Envy 15" Owner's Lounge threads and couldn't find a definite answer to the following questions--there was usually conflicting info.
In total there's over 1k pages, so despite considerable time spent perusing and searching perhaps I missed a definite answer somewhere in there. So hopefully, it's okay if I ask this outside of those threads for a conclusive answer:
1) Every review I've read mentioned the heat issue with the i7 system. Has anyone read an official review or gathered a consensus from users if the i5 version of the 15" model has lesser heat issues?
2) Does the i5 have graphics switching? And does the i7?
3) The i7 has very short battery life, which dissuades me from getting it. Is the i5 any better? What sort of usage are most i5 owners getting out of it?

I have had my laptop for a couple of years now. It is currently the HP Envy 17t-2100 normal edition. A while back long before this issue I had to re-install windows 7 and of course while I did download all the drivers. I was still not able to download the switchable graphics driver / program. I don't know if this is related to the issue or not.
Â
The MAIN issue I do have however, is that my laptop no longer recognizes the high performance GPU (The AMD Radeon 6850M). I have tried installing the drivers, uninstalling, and reinstalling again. But no luck.

When I'm watching flash video in Safari my battery life drops to 2-3 hours ... When I'm watching the same content in Firefox I'm good for another 5-6.
What is going on here and would Chrome resolve these issues? Yes I know I could try out Chrome for myself but I alone am not a good enough sample size for the question I'm asking.
At any rate, why does Firefox handle flash much better than Safari on OS X?

After killing my old battery, my Latitude E6500 is refusing to detect the new battery I bought for it. It will run off the battery if I disconnect the AC, but will not charge, I have been using a co-worker's E6500 to recharge it.
I have been instructed to run the E6500 Bios flash, however since the computer does not detect the battery, it will not allow me to proceed with the flash. /forceit does not work. Are there any other command line variables I can use to make the bios upgrade perform without a battery check?

why when I run 3dmark, on the battery as opposed to off the power, does the m1730 run like a pile of crap?
The opening scene of Return To Proxycon usually hits 85-90 fps and about a 70 minimum, then goes down to 30 when it goes across the room to the troopres with guns.
But when I run it on battery, it wont go over 30 fps for the opening scene and foes into single figures when it goes across the room? Is this normal ? Surely not, as it makes a 'gaming laptop' non existant basically. If I plug the power cord in the fps shoots up instantly. All power settings are maxxed, as far as I can see? Unless thre is a GPU one I haven't noticed?
Ive just noticed because I got a Dell battery for my 1730 today (didnt come with one - refurb). It's a T9300 / 8800M GTX SLi model.

Earlier this year I bought one of the Clevo 8800M GTX notebooks, thinking I could use it to play games during my daily commute. Unfortunately, I quickly discovered that the 3d capabailities of the card were disabled under battery power by the Clevo hardware, so back it went....
I am now considering a dell XPS M1730 8800M GTX SLI model. I would be grateful if any current owners of this model could tell me what the 3d performance is like under battery power. I'm not looking for a great amount of battery life (between 75 and 90 minutes ideally)....
Incidentally, I have just been told by one of the Dell sales advisors that the battery will last for between 3.5 and 4 hours when playing games... ha ha what a joke, where do they find these guys?..........
