HP/Compaq :: Hard Drives & HP

Just received a box to send my dv9543cl back to HP in the "bay area". I have read on this site that it is advised to remove the hard drives before sending the laptop back to HP for repair. Is this correct?

I wanna switch from my factory hard drive to a 7200 500gb 3.0 gb/s WD hard drive. Will I notice a dramatic difference in the performance of my computer. Also, can I use recovery discs or my factory reformat dvd to make this new drive bootable?

how many hard drives could fit in the Vaio Z, because on the SonyStyle site when configuring the HD's and choosing for example 256GB SSD it shows 2x128GB SSD. Does this mean 2x SSD hard drives? If so then I'm wondering why they don't make the option available to put in 2x256GB SSD's. Also, if 2 SSD's are possible, are 2 standard 2,5" spinning HD's possible?

you get a Z11 configured with one SSD drive, is it possible to later install a second drive on your own? Also, can you install a normal hard drive as a second drive? Like can you get a 128gig SSD drive as a boot drive and then install a 2.5" Hard Drive in the second slot?

I need help deciding which HD drives to order on my new m1730.
7,200 200 gB vs 5,400 320 gB drives?
I have seen the thread on 7,200 vs 5,400 HD drives already. Does anyone know which brands/models Dell is shipping with new m1730's?
According to a sales rep who checked with technical support Dell is not using the Samsung spinpoint 320 gB hard disk drive.

I've seen on sony sites etc that one of the Z come with dual SSD hard drives.
I have a Z26GN with the standard spinning disc harddrive but am looking to put an SSD in.
I was just wondering does this mean the Z series laptops have room for 2 harddrives? Thus allowing me to keep my existing one in and add the new one?
Also with regards to SSD I've been told the intel X-25 80gb is a good choice.
I was wondering is there anything better than this?
And what do sony put in the Z series themselves?

I bought an XPS 1530 four months ago. I went through 4 hard drives - one would fail, Dell would send a replacement ... that was the cycle. After #4 Hard Drive failed (and a tech came out to try and replace the motherboard & hard drive without success), I finally got them to agree to a "System Exchange"..
They sent me a new XPS 1530 - within 2 days the Hard Drive died! (#5)..
Anyone have any ideas (besides bad luck) of what could cause 5 failed hard drives in two different brand new systems?..
Electrical? I used the laptop at home and at my office. My office is a rented space inside another company's building.
I thought maybe electrical, but I use my old laptop their (Dell Inspiron 6000) and it has been fine. Unless something electrical causes a problem in the XPS only for some specific reason.
I have no idea, but does anyone have any "out of the box" explanations for me?
Dell is sending me a box so I can mail this 2nd laptop in to the Dell Depot for inspection and repair. My faith in the XPS 1530 is zero.
Any ideas or advice?

I have two seperate questions to ask, so will post them seperately.
I have a Vostro 1700 with a 250gb drive in it. When I bought it I had a problem with the laptop and managed to get a hard drive caddy free from Dell, so just need the drive. I know it needs to be a SATA 2.5 drive, but will any drive fit, or do I need to go for any specific ones? Is the Vostro SataII?

I have a Studio 1735 with 2 X 250GB HDD's... but this is not enough for me. Is it possible to upgrade them to 500GB HDD's each or even 2 x 1TB drives?
If so what type of hard drive do I need and can you provide links?
This would be great as I do not want another external HDD & plus I need to reinstall Vista...too much crap on my laptop now and it frequently hangs / freezes / slow boot load etc

I currently have everything I ever need on one laptop -- a mid-2009 15" MBP. Having had a slew of hard drive problems over the past few years, and given that such disks are regularly the source of problems (before, say, a logic board), I'm considering purchasing a spare hard drive and keeping it, or the one in my machine, as a backup disk for the day when my current drive dies. The closest Apple store is ~45 minutes away, and I'm perfectly capable of doing my own computer surgery. An inoperable laptop would be a pretty significant problem for me.
So basically, my questions are twofold:
- From perusing the hard drive threads a few months back here in the Apple forum, it seems like WD's Scorpio Blue (500 GB, 5400 RPM) is the popular choice. Given the time that's elapsed since its release (and the thinning of hard drive threads after the last "big one" I found), are there any other drives, SSD or standard, that can beat it in terms of power usage / noise / performance overall without gouging the bill too much?
- I use Time Machine with a Time Capsule to keep everything nice and backed up, but an HD/SSD swap would be best done with an image of my entire drive. Is Carbon Copy Cloner still the go-to for that?

Is it safe to swap hardrives that are running windows 7 between two t420's? I have read in the past that the OS is tied to the hardware and doing such a swap will cause errors or blue screen.

Lenovo V570, I'm on Windows 7 64-bit.
I have an esata port, and was going to get an internal hard drive with a case that converts the drive into an esata drive. I'm wanting to get a 3 TB drive, and in order to get it to read all 3 TB, I'll need to reformat the drive in GPT format (not MBR). Right?
I see a thing online that says the SATA controller has to be compatible with GPT in order to do this. I want to use it as an external drive, without any operating system on it, so I'm not worried about getting Windows to run on it; just if I can format it as GPT and get the full 3 TB out of the drive. I don't want to buy the 3 TB drive and then find out I can only get 2 because of the motherboard. If that site was correct, then I need to know if the sata controller is compatible with GPT.
I see this listed under the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers list: Intel Mobile Express Chipset SATA AHCI Controller.
I tried to call Lenovo support but could only tell me that she thinks I have SATA 0 or 1, but nothing about the controller in this model or GTP compatibility.
How do I find this out?

my notebook has the optiarc 5500S BD Rom and I've only had it for a couple days. I've tried a few blu rays using quickplay but the playback is a little stuttery, especially when skipping from scene to scene. Overall, playback is fairly smooth but my eyes are really picky and I can tell it's not as smooth and fluid as it would be if I were to watch it on my ps3.
I'm wondering if PowerDVD (blu ray version) would be smoother. What are your experiences with blu ray on your notebooks and what software do you use?

I've had an XPS 1710 for 3.5 years and am itching for an upgrade, but I'm doing my best to wait for the xps16 refresh. I'm started to get a bit irritated with the speed of my 160gb 5400 rpm laptop drive so I was thinking of upgrading to a SSD while I wait.

I have 2 WD Elements External Drives - 640GB each, one formatted in FAT32, the other in NTFS.
I know OS X does not write NTFS drives, but I've got NTFS for MAC installed.
I have a problem: Everytime I connect either drive and leave them for sometime (at times just a couple of minutes) they eject unexpectedly. An error message pops up saying that the drive has not been properly ejected.
However, there are times where I can connect without problems but when I try to copy a file, half-way it disconnects again (This is with the NTFS-formatted drive)
On my FAT32 drive, when I connect successfully, either I can copy stuff, or the message : "Error Code 0, unexpected error occured" pops out
What should I do? I have disabled the NTFS for MAC driver but it does not solve my problem.
