HP/Compaq :: Dv4t- Processor And Graphics Card
Aug 13, 2009
I'm considering purchasing an HP dv4t. Right now I'm choosing between the HP and a Toshiba model. I wonder two things. . . 1. if someone might please advise about the preferred brand --(and why, since quality matters more to me) and 2. if someone could please advise about the best choice for the dv4t processor and graphics card? I want to be sure I'm getting a dedicated graphics card and that I can upgrade later.
Information is as follows:
Toshiba: $700- model A505-S6965 Intel Core 2 Dual Processor P7350
ATI Radeon HD 4750 graphics w/ 512 mb memory
HP dv4t: $850- See options below. I was thinking the P7350 processor and the Intel graphics accelerator. . . but is that the same as a dedicated graphics card? The NVIDIA card adds $150 to the computer cost. . . it would be good to know if that's worth it!
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor T6500 (2.1GHz, 2MB L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB)
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor P7350 (2.0GHz, 3 MB L2 Cache, 1066MHz FSB)
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor P7550 (2.26GHz, 3 MB L2 Cache, 1066MHz FSB)
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor P8700 (2.53 GHz, 3 MB L2 Cache, 1066MHz FSB)
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor T9550 (2.66 GHz, 6 MB L2 Cache, 1066MHz FSB)
Graphics card choices:
Intel(R) Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD
512MB NVIDIA GeForce G 105M

Going to try to keep this short and sweet. I am being offered a system with a much better processor and graphics card, but there are some serious things missing (which can be added to the 1458), such as, backlit keyboard, the SSD. I do use the backlit keyboard often, and the SSD is the main reason I got the XPS in the first place. Should I call and ask for the same specs as the 1340, or just accept the system they are offering me? .....

I'm currently wondering how easy (or even if its possible) changing the processor in a studio 15 would be.
Secondly i'm curious as to expensive a new processor would cost, 2.5GHz preferably as my current processor is 2.0GHz.
My second question is: Can the graphics card be changed without soldering in the studio 15. I'm unsure whether the graphics card is integrated or not.
My current graphics card is: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3450 (256mb)
I was wondering how much a new card would cost and the difficulty to replace.

I bought a dv9000t about 2 years ago for college. Almost exactly a year after I bought it, I turned it on to find the screen completely screwed up. It displayed only grey (almost black and white alternating) stripes horizontally with organic shapes of varying shades throughout the screen. I hooked it up to an external monitor where I was able to use it in safe mode only, but with extremely limited color gamut (i.e. the cutout filter on photoshop) so that gradients appeared only as blots of color. It also displayed the screen with white dots and lines across everything.
After some investigation (with no help from HP) I came to believe that the graphics card was, for lack of a better word, fried. This having happened some week or two after the warranty ran out--hp wanted some $100 to even officially diagnose the problem, and unofficially it would cost $600 more to fix. What I am wondering is if the problem actually was the graphics card, and in any case, is this laptop worth anything more than sitting on my shelf? (I bought a sager np 5793 and haven't looked back, but my brother needs a laptop and there sits the HP...)

I've read the stickies and used the search option BUT i'm still going to ask the question - can i upgrade the 'graphics card' on a dv6700 with the 8400M GS chipset currently installed? i've read that HP's aren't upgrade friendly but thought i'd check anyway.......

Whenever I play a game, sooner or later, the computer just promplty shuts down. The part of the computer which holds the graphics card is then generally very very hot, which leads me to guess that this is the problem. Note that it sometimes can run for several hours without complications, but other times it wont even take half an hour. It's getting very frustrating and this combined with a lot of other issues makes it an altogether very unpleasent experience using HP.
I have updated the bios, but not changed anything in it - no overclocking or anything.

Via MS windows update there is an update to Nvidia Quadro FX 770m graphics. I installed it, however the screen back light brightness got capped and would not go beyond 2 points (out of 5 points) and hence i had to revert back to original drivers.

So I confirmed that my graphics card is dying/burning out. I called HP Support and they told me to send it back in. My screen starts pixelating when i play games and occasionally my graphics driver fails and I get a blue screen signaling that my graphics card is definitely dying.
My question is: Can I ask HP for any upgrades or improvements since this apparently a manufacturing defect and it is not my fault? Can I be compensated for the 2 weeks + that it will take for my computer to be fixed?

I bought a dv9000 about two years ago and recently the motherboard died. Since I'm not exactly rich at the moment I haven't bought a new laptop, but instead my father gave me his dv6286 because choose to upgrade.
But the geforce 7200 in the dv6268 isn’t any good for gaming, so I though if it was possible to take my geforce 7600 from the dv9000 and put it in the dv6286.

I'm thinking about diving into the purchase of the HP dv8t, everything about looks good on paper except that the video card is a bit anemic.
I want to know if the motherboard uses the MXM standard and if the GeForce GT 230M inside is upgradeable in the future or is it soldered onto the motherboard?
Isn't it the replacement for HDX18?

I recently received my Hp dv4t. Its cool but has below mentioned problems.
1) Wireless connectivity disappears after 1 min. I have to manually restart network connection.
2) CPU fan always remains on. HP has by default set it to "always on" in BIOS. I know they had some issues earlier with heating so as work around they introduced this Hack. Is same issue with this laptop too?
3) HDD is getting very hot. Much hotter compared to my dell studio laptop. Is this normal or shall I ask for some specific manufacturer harddisk in replacement?
4) display is not fitting in screen. Display leaves 4cm space on bottom and right edge. Is there any way to manually adjust display like the one monitor or other laptop manufacturers provide? I have asked for replacement of whole laptop at present

I'm having an issue displaying a picture properly on my Vizio 720p 26" LCD via HDMI. No matter what resolution, the desktop extends beyond the border of the screen as my mouse will move past it into the area I can't see, and the screen doesn't scroll like it normally would in windows when the resolution is set too high. The NVIDIA control panel can't even get the 720p option to display properly.

if any of you dv4t owners have run into the same issue trying to replace your hard drive... I opened the hard drive cover, removed the 3 screws holding the drive in place, and tried pulling up on the metal tab (the one facing the inside of the notebook) but couldn't get the drive free... I've been struggling to get the drive out for awhile now without any luck. Out of desperation I used a pair of pliers to try and get a better grip on the tab, but all I ended up doing was bending the outer casing (not the drive) slightly. It's like it glued in there or something!

My wife spilled Mt Dew on here laptop (hp dv4t), all over the keyboard, I quickly grabbed it, and help the power button to shut it down, turned it upside down and let the pop drain out, let it sit for a few days, and now it works fine... Except... Half the keyboard is now sticking, Im wondering if the whole keyboard will pop off in one piece, or if the indivizual keys pop off easily enough.

I understand that the dv4t has heat issues, but is 77 degrees Celsius normal for the GPU? The HD hovers at 60 as well. CPU temps are in the 30s at idle and 40s under load.
I've already had the laptop serviced once for heat issues, but they've returned.

Following my brief yet impressive experience with the budget HP dv4-1225dx notebook back in February, I wanted to revisit this model to see just what it was capable of in a more potent configuration. Welcome the new HP dv4t-1300 series CTO model, available directly from HP.
PROS: LED screen, styling, 12-cell battery, smart bay hard drive, gaming performance
CONS: Heat and noise, poor speakers, no firewire
DETAILS:
In early March of this year HP did a slight refresh of their dv4 lineup. Gone unfortunately is the bronze/chrome color scheme that I was such a big fan of, but in place HP now offers a glossy black and, what they call, moonlight white color scheme.
Something has me thinking someone at HP wants to mimic that "other" black and white notebook maker. Like it or not, if you want a notebook from HP now it's going to be either an all black or white unit - no bronze, no silver - so get used to it. The specs on my unit are as follows:...............
