HP/Compaq :: CleaningHDX Dragon
Jan 18, 2009I've got a HP HDX (the old 20" one), had it about a year now. The fans seem to be louder than when I first got it, so I was wondering if its time for a clean. I cant visually see any build up of dust in the fans or vents from the outside, but its probably a different story inside.
Has anyone cleaned out their HDX's? Is it hard to do? I've read the manual and it looks like there is quite a bit of disassembly to get to the fans. Anyone know of an easier way to clean the fans? I heard that blowing compressed air through the vents can work, but not sure about this. I dont want to just blow the dust somewhere else inside the laptop.
I did some tests on my core temps. CPU (both cores, Intel 2.2GHz Core2Duo) seems to be around 50-52C when its idle. GPU is 40C idle, and goes up to around 57C after serious gaming for an hour so.
Are these temps normal for the HDX, or higher than normal?

Mar 9, 2009I currently own a HDX9494nr, and my touchpad and buttons are not working. I don't want to send it back, as this is my main computer, and I depend on it for work and leisure. Any suggestions for me? Maybe something I can fix, instead of shipping it back to HP and having no computer for two weeks? BTW, the cursor moves, but it dosen't respond when i tap it to open links or programs.

Nov 29, 2009I bootcamped my macbook into Windows XP to play Dragon Age Origin, and the game lagged when I connect the macbook to an external 22" monitor and tried to play Dragon Age with it. What could be the reason that causing the lagging?Could it be a 22" monitor is too much for a macbook in bootcamp Windows?

Mar 8, 2014I have been trying to solve this issue for the last few hours. I recently bought a Lenovo Ideapad y510p (Windows 8.1). Normally Dragon Assistant comes preinstalled on this laptop. It is even advertised by several retailers such as Best Buy, Amazon, and Costco (same sku). However, I can not find this software anywhere on my laptop.

After talking to three different Lenovo support technicians, we came to the conclusion that the software was lost with the windows 8.1 update. They still did not know of any way to obtain Dragon Assist, as it is not sold by Nuance and is only a preinstalled software.

Oct 8, 2014I ran into the Dragon assistant not found issue. I called support and got a download link. When I try to install it, I I got an error message saying "Installation has stopped. Only entitled systems are allowed to use this software". I called support again and was asked for $69 to troubleshoot this issue.

Apr 14, 2010I am ordering a mbp and have yet to experience the glossy vs. antiglare in person. The only thing I have to compare is last years Sony Z. It has a lovely screen which doesn't have much of a gloss to it, so I can only assume it is what you would consider an antiglare or matte screen (I believe the quality may be better, but that isnt my concern at this point). What I'm wondering is if the matte appearance of the two is comparable or of the mpb screen is totally different...

Seems the closest thing as of now is the Envy 15, but from what I understand, the slice battery is required to get the battery life beyond a few hours -- and using it bumps the notebook's travel weight to ~7.8 lbs.

Oct 21, 2009Does anyone have a good way to OC this laptop other than using ClockGen? I am basically wondering if there is a BIOS option. I know there are some OC guides out there, but this laptop is almost 3 years old, and as far as I can tell does not have an option in the BIOS. Also, my proc is the T2600, not the one is this review, but other than that exactly the same. Jun 30, 2009Ive just about had it with Vista on my laptop and want to try a new OS before I junk this thing. Is anyone running Win7 or Ubuntu on a HP DV5z AMD 64 bit laptop? The machine is about a year old and I have 4gb of RAM and the thing is a dog. Ive used Ubuntu in the past on Dell laptops and its a pain to get everything running wireless drivers, flash, etc. Win7 being a RC may or may not have everything up to speed on for my machine.

Other than 17 vs 16 inch screen are their any benefits to build quality from 1 to the other?
I will be travelling so I would prefer the lesser HDX 16 incher but build quality is a concern

Jul 14, 2009I'm am deciding whether to buy this laptop for school use. It has a great size, stylish, and decent specs for a laptop that is so lightweight. The only turn off is that it was made for entertainment, but should this laptop do well for word processing, spreadsheets, and web surfing?
Would the 9 cell battery last for more than 5-6 hours? My budget is also under 700$ but it can stretch a little.
