Mar 22, 2014I just bought my laptop today, it has a i7-4500 processor with windows 8.1... While i was installing norton the screen turned blue but it was ok after a few minutes. But the screen turned blue again, and my task manager stopped responsing. It returned to normal after i re-signed in. Now it just turns blue for a few seconds occasionally and goes back to my desktop screen with all my shortcuts moved to the centre and my background removed.
I am not sure if this is normal, haven't used windows 8 before.

Oct 30, 2014I got my W540 recently with windows 8.1 pro on it. but as all engineers worst nightmare windows 8 has hard time with engineering softwares (for my case TIA Portal for PLC programming software which only support windows 7). so i need to have a windows 7. i prefer to keep my windows 8 and have dual boot system with windows 7 added. But i can't install windows 7. initially due to disk type (GPT), then i changed it to MBR without losing my files (which only was possible if i had deleted the recovery partition- now my recovery is on my flash drive). But there are already 4 partitions on the system (1 for C: drive and 3 for recovery and system files which came originally with the product) , how can i install a windows 7? i can't add another partition because that makes my disk a Dynamic disk. i really need windows 7 on my system ASAP.

But grub was in legacy mode and i had problems booting up win8. So, I used boot-repair to try to fix it, but it seems to have gotten worse.

May 18, 2014I have recently purchased a W540 and connected to my Dell u3011 30" monitor. I used the Dual Link DVI-D cable that came with the monitor and plugged it into my Ultra Dock. The maximum resolution i can get is 1920x1080? When i change over to a Display port cable i can achieve the full 2560 x 1600 resolution? Is there something i need to do in addition to achieve the full 2560x1600 resolution with the DVI-D dual link cable? I want to be able to connect 2 laptops to the one monitor and only have 1 display port input so i need to be able to use the DVI cable on the 2nd machine while still achieving 2560x1600 resolution.

Nov 7, 2014I purchased a Edge E545 that came pre loaded with Win7 Pro 64. I created the Recovery disks for Win7 and used the Win 8 Disks to upgrade the OS. I have created a new NTFS partition on my hard drive and would like to install Win 7 to that partition. I have tried to load the recovery disks to install into that partition but I have not been successful; the boot disk won't even load. I downloaded the Win7 Pro 64 ISO to try and load it into that partition but the computer does not have the COA sticker under the battery like it's supposed to.
I have recovery disks that won't load at restart or cold boot and I have a perfectly good ISO that i don't have a COA to.

I've got a T430 with dual boot Windows 8.1 and Ubuntu. I rarely use the Window partition, and I want leave it on the HD and migrate the Ubuntu partition over to a new mSATA SSD installed in slot currently used for caching for Windows. I'm not concerned about Windows slowing down without the cache, but I do need a bootable windows partition.
I was about to go ahead and purchase a suitable mSATA SSD for this process when I read the hardware maintenance manual (pg 26) and mSATA update guide, which made me think that using the mSATA for anything but caching on the T430 might be problematic.

Jul 19, 2014I just purchased these 2 new dual monitors whose input connectors only come in HDMI, DisplayPort, and Mini DisplayPort. I'm using a X230 with a Ultrabase 3 and I can't seem to get the 2nd monitor up and working... My first one is being used through the displayport direclty on my laptop (left side).
Is it not possible to get both monitors using a combination of these cables? Would buying a converter (HDMI or displayport --> VGA) solve the problem?

Feb 4, 2015I have bought a Lenovo Z50 70 laptop with free DOS. I have sucessfully installed Windows 8.1 in it. I want to install Fedora 20 alongside with windows 8.1. But I have failed to do this after trying so many times.
I have noticed the following things in my laptop
1. In windows 8.1 recovery option on menu is displaying for UEFI firmware setting. ( I have installed windows 8.1 in legacy support mode in BIOS)
2. In BIOS setup (tapping F2 at the time of booting) no "Secure Boot Option" is displaying.

Nov 7, 2012I bought the i7-3520M (dual) and I looked in the manual to see what slots to use for my memory upgrade and the instructions were completely off (where the dummy stick is supposed to be and where it actually was).
I purchased two 8GB (Kingston) sticks to replace the 4GB that came installed. I took out the original 4GB under the keyboard and replaced it with the new 8GB Kingston. Everything worked great and I've been using it that way for about a week.
Tonight I decided to go ahead and install the other 8GB. I assumed it would go in the bottom slot where there's a dummy stick. I pulled out the dummy and placed my 8GB there. Turned the laptop on and... nothing. It wouldn't power on at all. I took my 8GB out and put the dummy back and it worked fine. Just to make sure I didn't get a bad stick, I replaced the one under the keyboard with my other 8GB and it worked fine there. My question is where is my second 8GB supposed to be installed and does that one dummy stick always stay where it is? It does have a "do not remove" graphic on it, but I thought it was only because the laptop came with one stick and if you were putting two in you would replace it.
Lenovo P500 P/Y/Z Series :: Default Boot Device Missing Or Boot Failed
May 25, 2014My Ideapoad P500 is approximately 16 months old (so the warranty period is out, obviously!) A couple of nights after a reboot I got the message "Repairing Hard Disk errors. This could take an hour or longer."... or something very similar. The laptop hung up at that message for more than 18 hours.
I did a hard reboot and now get the message "Checking media" followed by the error "Boot failed." This leads to the message, "Default Boot Device Missing or Boot Failed."No I don't have any recovery media.Yes I have pretty recent backups so that is not a problem.I've got an enclosure that I can use to hook my laptop hard drive up to so I can see if the drive is even readable.
Now here is the 64 thousand dollar question... how do I get the hard drive out of the laptop? I have taken the five screws out of the back. At that point, I think the DVD drive should slide out, but it does not.how to get the hard drive out?

Jul 31, 2013I have a y500 Lenovo gaming laptop with Windows 8, and for the past couple of days, each time my laptop is put in hibernation or powered down, whenever I turn it back on it gives me this message:
"Default Boot Device Missing or boot failed Insert recovery media and hit any key Then select boot manager to choose a new boot device to boot or recovery media."
Then it brings me to a page with 3 boot options, and only the Windows Boot Manager works. I'm doing scans and hardware scans but so far nothing is being found. This laptop is less than 2 months old so I really don't think it's a hardware problem, and I haven't downloaded anything recently that may have messed this up. I would contact Lenovo but I'm unsure if this is an issue with the laptop, or Windows 8.

Dec 13, 2013I get the error in the Title after i tried to flash the latest BIOS update for the Z510. I can press ok and then get into the boot manager but i cant choose anything there. Also I cant boot from a Disk with e.g. XP on it.
I also tried the Inside BIOS crisis mode (fn+r) with the BIOS file on my USB drive but it doesn't work and tries to access the file on the USB drive but boots normally instead to the error again. (Couldn't try it with removed battery as I have to remove the whole back to remove the battery on the Z510).

Nov 29, 2011I have a T420 that I'm using with a Mini Dock Series 3 - 90W 433710U docking station. I'm trying to connect to two external monitors (both HP 1965's) using the DVI and VGA outputs on the docking station. From the VGA output, I'm running a VGA (M) to DVI (M) into my monitor. I can only get either the DVI or VGA outputted monitors to work by themselves, but not together. When I connect both external displays, it will switch off one of the external monitors (the first one connected). Both are verified working as external monitors with the T420, just not at the same time. When using the DVI output, I can get dual monitors to work using the ThinkPad display as one monitor and the DVI-connected external monitor as the second. Is there a way to connect to two external monitors from a T420 with a Mini Dock Series 3 - 90W 433710U docking station? Or do you a multi-monitor adapater, such as an Cirago HDX3DV01 to do that?

Aug 6, 2014After running my B570 (1068) with an extended display, the unit went into hibernation. On wake-up the laptop screen is indecipherable garbage. The second display will run to show BIOS startup but then reverts to the built-in screen - which is illegible. Toggling the F3 key does not get a good screen.
I read another post suggesting this is a hardware failure. What parts have failed?

Nov 28, 2014Bought an Inspiron 13 7347 recently.
When i went through many review sites, they mentioned it has 8GB SSHD. But there is nothing mentioned such as SSHD on System configuration when i checked in the PC.
I have no comlaints with the performance yet may be because i have not used enough. But then how is the machine so fast and wakes up in second if its not an ultrabook and has not any SSHD in it?

Jan 27, 2015For accelerating my 4730s I bought a Seagate SSHD ST1000LM014 and built in. On trying to install a new Windows 7 (64bit - german) with original HP Recovery DVD installation starts.
The SHHD is recognised, a (primär) partition can be created. But then an (german) Error message appears:
"Beim Setup konnte keine neue Systempartition erstellt ... werden. Weitere Informationen finden Sie in den Protokolldateien zum Setup." It's a bit strange, because it seems a (system) partition WAS CREATED.
Because at this point is an Windows-7-opion for loading drivers "Treiber laden", a special HP driver is required?
The Windows 7 setup cannot be continued.
Lenovo B590 B / G Series :: Won't Boot From USB Key
Sep 10, 2013I've just bought this laptop, and it came with windows 8 preinstalled, and I'm trying to install Windows 7 on it.
I have a bootable usb, which I've used many times to install Windows on my other laptops, but the B590 just wont do it. I feel like I've tried everything. I changed the boot priority order in BIOS with USB HDD as number 1 but it still just boots into windows 8.
I've tried removing everything but USB devices from the boot order, and now I get this boot menu: [URL]
Which is exactly what I want to boot from, but when I press enter to boot from the USB device, nothing happens.
The USB device IS bootable with a primary partition. I've used these steps to make it bootable in DISKPART [URL]
After having no luck on the B590, I tried booting on the USB on a different computer, and it works perfectly well. Starts installing windows 7. So it seems like the problem is not with my usb device.
I even tried restoring the USB drive and using Lenovo Bootable Generator application to make the usb bootable, with the same result.
Dell :: Dual Boot : XP And 7
Feb 5, 2009I formatted my XPS M1530 using this guide (How to: Step-by-step guide for installing Windows XP on XPS M1530) and everything worked perfect.
But when I rebooted, I realised that the computer booted directly to XP and didn't let me choose between XP and 7. Normal, I thought, so I stuck in the W7 CD and selected the "repair" option. This did the trick very neatly, repairing the W7 install. The only problem was that now it will boot ONLY to W7 and I still have no selection screen for the OS.
Dell :: Trying To Dual-boot Win 7
Jan 14, 2009I am trying to dual-boot Windows 7 on my XPS M1530 which is currently running Vista Ultimate - BUT I stumbled upon a problem. As I understand it, Vista will only allow you to have 4 partitions and magically I have 4 already.
I reformatted the laptop right after purchasing and no longer have the recovery drive. Here is what Vista says I have:
(1) EISA Configuration - 47mb
(2) C: (Vista) - 179gb
(3) Primary Partition - 4.25gb
(4) Primary Partition - 3gb

Jan 10, 2014I have a new y510p I just received this week. First thing I did was replace the 1TB HD with my own OCZ Vertex 4 256GB SSD Drive.When I power on the laptop for the first time, it does not find a bootable device (goes through network devices, then says no bootable devices). If I use ctrl-alt-delete to reboot the laptop, it then finds the drive on its own and starts booting into Windows.
I'd like to understand why this does not work on the first boot? I went into the BIOS and saw it says there that no drives are detected.This worries me slightly, as perhaps one day it will decide to no longer recognize the drive after the ctrl-alt-delete?
Lenovo P/Y/Z Series :: Z50-75 Won't Boot After BIOS Update
Sep 28, 2014I just bought Z50-75 with AMD FX7500, 8GB Ram and FreeDOS. I installed Windows 8.1 Pro, and they pulled some drivers during the installation, and I went to Lenovo sight and downloaded all the rest (graphics, camera, etc.), after each installation the computer restarted normally and all was O.K. The last drivers that I saw on the site were BIOS drivers, and I downloaded those to and it started the installation after which it said:"The system will now restart for changes to make effect", and it did, but, it would not boot up after that, all it did was show me this on the screen:
And I tried both of the options (the second one with the Windows CD inside), but it just stays where it is, no effect.
I can enter the bios and change the settings, but none of them seem to work because this is the maximum where it will go, the only difference is when I change from AHCI to Compatible mode, it restarts and than I have a blank screen, I have to use the One button Recovery to get back to this one from the picture above...

Oct 20, 2014I got this idela pad U410 about a year ago and it was functioning nornally. A few months ago it started to boot up very slowly when power cycles. A hibernate was quick. Now it never comes up and keeps waiting at the Lenovo screen, no windows. I have seen posts that say it is a manufacturing defect. This one is out of warranty, so what is the solution. Do we have a solution at all? Why does Lenovo market such a bad product. BTW, the back cover is so flimsy that it gave up and had to replace it. Overall a case of bad engineering i guess.

Feb 11, 2014I bought the Lenovo Ideapad Z500 and I'm trying to boot from a USB drive in order to install Windows on it. When I start the boot menu I only see the hard-drive, the DVD and the network. I tried to set both UEFI mode and Legacy mode in BIOS but the USB stick does not appear in the menu when I boot. I put the image of windows with Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool which formats the stick in NTFS mode.
I have the latest BIOS v1.21 and I tried with 2 different USB sticks: one 16GB USB 2.0 Corsair and with a 32GB USB 3.0 ADATA both on USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 ports on the notebook. I really haven't seen anything like this in my entire career.
I even downloaded the file efiootBOOTX64.efi and replaced the one that Windows come with on the specified folder on the USB stick ....
Why is so difficult to choose the USB boot drive on the newer notebooks? How can I boot from USB?
