Sony :: 85-90 Processes On Startup
Mar 4, 2009
When I turn on my Vaio Z, there are always around 85-90 processes running. That's a significantly more than my 3 year old Dell!
I also would also like to ask about the fan on my computer, which seems to always be on. It can't be heard in a room with people, but by myself, the sound becomes a nuisance.
Is it normal to have this fan on at all times (once in a very rare while, it turns off and is silent)? Is this an issue with my computer? Is it due to the fact that there are too many processes running

Was just curious since I didn't do a clean install and only removed a few programs from the factory-preinstalled assortment

On my new fw, task manager says that I have around 106 processes going at once. This number is huge! All i want to do on the laptop is surf the net, do microsoft office documents, watch films, listen to music on itunes that is basically it.
Do you know which processes I can safely close to reduce this number and increase the performance of the laptop, as that many processes is obviously going to slow it down.

Or remove completely. Some of them don't even have descriptions, but bluetooth for instance I don't use, I could stop those three? Then that would leave only EIGHTY. There are so many processes running, almost all of them say 00- but I take it that doesn't mean they are not using the processor & more to my concern heating up my notebook?
Is there a list of processes somewhere I could safely stop on a vaio? For someone who is not up to the task of clean install (I read the sticky), I'm just wondering if there's anything else that could make a difference before I accept a restocking fee.

When I first loaded up my Vaio the Startup Assistant booted by itself and I unchecked the box to stop booting on startup. After the while the Startup Assistant started booting up by itself even though the box is still unchecked. I thought by recovering to factory settings and unchecking the box would fix it but it has started booting up again.
how I can get rid of the Vaio software?

I was used to having, at most, 45 processes running when I used XP. However, I noticed that I have an average of 65 processes running in Vista

Does anyone know if approx. 75-80 processes normal for the Latitude E6400 with Dell ControlPoint installed?
I can't believe it's that much--if it is the case.
Also, should I install the Vista 64-bit chipset driver? I see Dell doesn't have one for Windows 7 64.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 and stops responding during use, it does not freeze up totally, just the programs being used stop responding.
Sometimes they will start back on their own after waiting a few minutes and other times I have to reboot. I have 61 processes showing with no programs opened. I have been told this is my problem.
It also is slow to recognize a DVD inserted in the DVD drive as well as a USB memory stick. How can I make sure my laptop is running and working properly with as few processes running as needed? I have downloaded and ran every program I can find in relationship to this problem and everything checks out OK on computer.
It also shows letters slowly as you type. This is not happening everytime but maybe 70% of the time i use a program involving typing.

A TX650p recently came into my possession that won't start up. When you hit the power button the power light goes on and the CD drive spins up, but the laptop doesn't boot.
I've tried attaching it to an external monitor, no luck. I've tried removing EVERY component, no luck. It has built-in RAM so it could be faulty. The chips are BGA so it could be cracked solder.

my VGN-NW350F. I just completed a semi-clean install and I can't get the WINDVD BD program to run. It crashes about 5 sec after startup (no splash screen or anything). I have tried reinstalling it numerous times from the recovery partition and recovery disks.

I just bought a new sony laptop and when I first started it, I forgot to put in the battery and just plugged in the AC adapter. So near the end of the setup of the system language and everything, I got a blue screen saying something about a power state failure and the computer shutdown. I immediately put the battery in and turned back on the computer and after a while, it was fine. So should i be concerned if i permanently damaged the computer or anything?

I just received my Vaio Z this past weekend! Everything works great, but I did notice that my screen flashes once when I boot into windows. Is this normal? I did do a full system recovery with the option of not preinstalling extra software (don't need excess things on the laptop); I do not think this is the reason, but I do not remember if this happened before.

When you boot your Vaio you will hear a special chime, this is one of Sony Vaio's feature. I know that some people do not like this sound and disable it in the boot menu. On the contrary, I quite like this chime. I want to use it in my mobile phone as a ringtone or a message sound. I try to find it in my Vaio S36 but couldn't find it. Can anyone please help me find the boot sound file or tell me where it is located in hard drive?

when I turn on my Z, the screen glitches two or three times upon hitting the login screen. Does this happen for anyone else?
Sometimes, (it's happened once or twice) my graphics card even failed upon logging in and had to be reloaded, and even, on one occassion, completely shut down my computer (Straight to black, green light turned red) in the middle of casual browsing.
Are these causes for concern? Should I return my laptop?

My girlfriend has an HP dv9000 (17" laptop) i dont know the exact specs, only that she is running vista 32bit.
But the problem is that every time she has to either restart, return from hibernate, or return from sleep mode, the computer cant do it.
If its restarting or returning from hibernate, the computer will begin to start up, you'll hear a click, and it will power down and power up again, click, and repeat the process endlessly.
From sleep mode, the computer will turn the screen on and off like you just "woke" it.

I have a Dell Inspiron 9400, I think thats the same as an Inspiron E17-- in america (for some reason dell likes to confuse its customers).
My screen goes competely blank after the dell logo and windows logo show up on startup.
Everything works because I can still log into windows and shut it down using shortcuts and all the normal sounds are played, there is just nothing on the screen

I have had my xps now for almost 2 years without a single issue, other than software screwups here and there. Now without any indication I am having a problem with my xps. After POST I get the awesome blue screen stating the usual run CHKDSK blah blah and this little gem:
*** STOP: 0x0000007B (0xBACCB524, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)
I restarted and ran the full diagnostic suite, passed everything just fine. I then checked the HDD by pulling it and putting it in a spare D830. It started up fine. I even put the D830 HDD in the xps to see if anything different would happen; same error.
I took it all apart to check dust and connections, everything looks great.

All you need is ATITool. No nTune no coolbits or anything else. You DO need you unlock your Nvidia BIOS per the instructions "stickied" at the top of this forum. Thats it (aside from ATITool).
Its a simple 2 part process. First open up ATITool and set your "core" and "memory" clocks to your preference. Hit "setclock". Now at the top just below the drop down menu, hit "new" and name the profile "startup" (or anything else as long as you remember). Then hit save. First part done.
Now hit the "settings" button at the bottom left. In the new window that pops up, hit the drop down menu and click on "startup". Check the top box and bring down the drop down menu next to that check mark and click "startup (or whatever you named it). Next, check the second box and hit the drop down menu next to that second box down and click on "registry key".
THAT'S IT!
Again, not sure if this is old news or not, but I thought I'd share this just incase anyone can make use of it!
I am using ATITool 0.26. Here is a link to a download for that, just click the button to the top right.

I bought my xps like a year ago. I didnt experience any major problems till now.
Recently, my laptop is taking a lot of time to startup. First, when i press the power button, before i get to see the user selection screen i have to wait like for 2 minutes in a black screen. Then it usually takes another minute to get through the Welcome Screen.
After that, it takes like 2-3 minutes before I can begin using my computer. I have checked my start up programs and disabled most of them, but it doesnt seem to do something

Quick background:
My dad just returned from Afghanistan and is home for a few weeks before he heads back (by home I mean with my mother - i.e. I am not with them so I cannot get my hands on the computer).
He's been using his netbook (Acer Aspire One ZG5) while over there and brought it back with him. It's been working perfectly fine for the last 6 months while he was there, but today when he tried to turn it on to show some pictures to my mom it wouldn't.
The computer would start up fine and begin loading windows. Then it just dies - it just shuts itself off.
The next time, the computer gave them the option to turn it on in safe mode which they tried. Same problem.
They've tried several times and it won't start - it also fails at different times.
Sometimes it almost fully loads windows and other times it shuts off a lot sooner.
I made him open the BIOS which worked fine... for a few seconds and then randomly shut itself off again.

Computer goes to "startup repair".
"Windows cannot repair automatically"
"No System restore points have been created"!
If I use my recovery dvd's all data and apps will be lost.
Recovery-cds.com sells a "boot Disk" that will allow me to retrieve all data etc before reinstalling Vista to original install.......

when i try to boot vista, which was on the hard drive i get a BSOD that flashes really quick so that i cannot see what it is. i ran a hard drive diagnostic and it says that the hard drive is bad, so i thought this was the problem. i ordered in a new hdd and i got the same problem. i tried to load windows 7 onto the harddrive thinking that something may have just gone bad with the install of vista. but i get the same BSOD. so i decided to try and go back and load xp onto the laptop and about halfway thru the install i get a BSOD giving me a stop error message. so i tried to swap out the ram with some working stuff but i get the same problem. so its not the hdd and not the ram. the thing that really has me puzzled is that if i try to install linux onto the computer it works just fine, no errors or anything. this is leading me to think that there is no hardware problem.

I have a HP dv7t. Works great but on occasion (twice a week or so) I get an error message on startup that IDT Audio has closed due to an error. The error message is the typical Windows Vista error message that you receive when a program unexpectedly closes down. Because of this, I have no audio from my speakers until I restart my computer (headphones do work though). The IDT Audio Settings program that runs in my taskbar is still there, so that didn't close.
I am running the latest driver from HP's website: 6.10.6087.0 A

For the past few weeks my DV5 has been behaving oddly when booted up from a cold start. The fan switches on producing an incredibly annoying rattle and squeal that almost sounds as if a bearing has gone in it. It's the same noise you occasionally hear from desktop fans that are clogged with dust and gunk.
It usually lasts for only a few seconds on initial bootup and is all over by the time Vista loads.
However, this laptop spends 95% of its time on my desk in my dorm room, residing on an improvised laptop stand for better cooling. I took it into the shop I bought it from now that I'm home and whilst they were happy to look at it, it just wouldn't replicate what I had been describing to them when they were listening to it. Murphy's law I guess. Anyway, they thought the only way to sort it out would be to leave it with them and they would try it daily till it it reared its head. Not knowing how long it would take to get over its stage fright (and needing some information off it) I declined that offer!
Has anyone noticed similar traits or symptoms in their machines? If so, how did you remedy it? I'm really tempted to pull it apart myself but it is only 7 months old so well within the warranty period that I may put in jeopardy.

Sometimes the laptop when started wont go past the blue screens. Also sometimes it wont turnoff. I suspect it might be because of usb devices, but even still i get the problem. It's really annoying because MBP is supposed to be a flawless device.
