Sony :: Blu-ray Drive Mata BD-MLT UJ-220S
Jan 12, 2010
I encountered a problem with my Blu-ray/CD/DVD drive after installing Windows 7 32bit (upgrade from Vista and also clean install). I cannot BURN discs anymore.
I've tried a lot of things with no success, so I'm not sure wheather is an Windows problem, a driver problem or a hardware problem.
My Vaio is FZ31Z model, but the drive Mat shi ta BD-MLT UJ-220S is also present in some other Vaio models.
So, any of you having this drive and who has managed to make it work on Windows 7, please be so kind and give me an answer.

I got a bit of a funky request. Due to a ruined hard drive needing replaced, I had to buy the restore disks from sony and all that jazz. Anyway, they didnt work (found out later they misnumbered the disks, pretty hilarious actually).
So I ended up installing a 64 bit operating system (used to have 32 bit) and have been gathering drivers one by one. No compatibility issues so far, interestingly enough.
Pretty much found everything except one, the dreaded blu ray drivers for the burner listed in the title. Anyway, I was curious as to whether the drivers I need to burn/read blu rays might be floating around somewhere? (sony website, as expected, is no help and it doesn't exist as far as the manufacturer is concerned.) If not, do you think there is anyway to get them off one of the three restore disks themselves by bypassing sony's vaio recovery center? The model is a vaio vgn fz 190, by the way.

I have a vaio z (VGN-Z590) and I can't seem to read or write DVDs and CDs, however, I can read CDs (not the CD-Rs).
I was wondering if I could replace the drive myself with any Panasonic (Mata) UJ-862AS or do I need the specific
sony drive? If I do need the sony drive, is there somewhere I can order it? I'm under the useless extended warenty where they want me to send my computer to them for 2 weeks when it would take me 1hr to fix it myself

So, I recently bought a blu ray drive for my xps m1730 and it installed perfectly, but it won't read ANY discs.
The drivers installed successfully and device manager says the device is working properly.
I have no idea what's wrong, I switched back and forth with my old dvd/cd drive and that works perfectly, but the blu ray drive can't read any discs. It spins when i put in the disc for like 5 seconds and there's complete silence after that. When I go into Computer and click the drive, it just says "please insert a disk into drive E:."

who opened I believe Z and connected a hard drive to dvd drive connector while leaving dvd drive in for cosmetic reasons. Can't find this thread. Where exactly can the hard drive go? Inside the tray?
I am afraid there will be too much vibration if I put regular HD there. For this reason I would rather put there SSD but is there a way to make this a primary OS drive? Seems like last bios allows to boot from optical drive.

I'm having some strange happenings with my Vaio FZ of late. I took it apart a couple of days ago to clean it up and after re-assemebling and hitting the power button,
the computer wouldn't go past the initial "Vaio,Phoenix,Intel" screen. I tried a couple of hours later and it booted fine.
(Note, I've took it apart on two occasions before and have had zero problems after).....

I have a Sony Vaio FZ445 which has problems with the Otiarc DVD AD-7560. What happens is that when playing audio, the sound skips playing CDs.
I have tried all the requisite diagnostics, like checking the IDE channels to see if the mode is DMA or PIO, and installing and reinstaling the drivers and firmware updates for the drive. It still happens and looks like I need a new DVD drive. I have XP Pro and Ubuntu 9 and it does this in both OS's (which affirms my suspicion that its not a codecs or driver issue). I have also always cleaned the drive every dozen uses too.
am I limited to using only a new Sony DVD drive to replace it? and... is it easy to replace these drives oneself?

So I want to buy this Sony Z laptop... but they charge too much for the 320 GB upgrade ($250).. I can get it off new egg for $90 shipped [url]
Only difference is this G-Sensor Business... Is that a motherboard feature or controlled by the drive its-self?
Does anyone know which brand/model drive they use in the Sony Z? How many drives fit in the Z?

I got my new VPC-Z today, and I teared it apart already
I wanted to perform the same trick, as in old Z - to connect the Micro SATA "Slimline" connector for DVD to the additional SSD with simple cable adapter.
UNFORTUNATELY it looks like Sony decided to stop this practice Additional drive will not be seen.
I spent some quality time figuring out why, and I finally found the reason - POWER. Sony is not delivering power anymore through standard "slimline" microSATA I used voltage meter, and all I got was measly 1V !
To prove that, I connected the SSD to the external power source, and also to the new Z via SATA data part...
Guess what? IT WORKS! - so, either Sony has some new standard for optical drives, which I doubt - or, they built in some kind of protection that detects optical drive behavior - and if it doesn't find it, it cuts the power down to the microSATA connector, which is why I am getting those low voltages..
Question is: - All we need is 5V source, as 2.5" drives only need 5V. It has to have decent power in order to drive HDDs if you wish.
Has anyone already done that? I guess USB would be the best place to get 5V from, but the problem is - everything is so small It is going to be real PITA to do it...

I used to buy the sony Z's a couple of years ago and at the time they only offered slower small drives.
I could replace those with faster 7200RPM drives in larger sizes. Then when they started offering larger drives,
it was still cheaper to buy it with a stock 5400RPM drive and buy a larger 7200RPM drive seperately

I have the new Z model VPCZ117GG..and unfortunately for my region it didn't come with a Bluray drive and I had no choice of customization as well..
My version is the one with the Full HD screen,256GB SSD and 8GB Ram.
I'm wondering if it's possible to replace the DVD drive with a bluray drive. I know this will void warranty, but i'll be doing it after my warranty expire

I have a VAIO VGN-AW21Z with a small solid state C Drive which is becoming megga full and in the red So I need to take action and uninstall some of the pre-loaded crap.
Have been down the list and removed all the things I feel confident about but there are some other large files there which I am unsure about and hope some of you can tell me what they do. As I only use my lappie to process photos using Adobe PS, a bit of iTunes, web browsing and emailing........ so I don't need any other specialist type stuff (gaming or producing videos etc).
The following list are what I would like to remove if I knew it is safe to do so.
What do they do?
Adobe Acrobat 9 Standard (759mb)
VAIO BD Menu data (969mb)
VAIO DVD Menu Data Basic (543mb)
VAIO Wallpaper Contents (134mb)
WinDVD BD for VAIO (113mb)
ALSO this machine runs on VISTA and I heard that Windows 7 is a far smaller file. Is it possible to upgrade to 7 and to delete Vista? That might make a huge difference if it is possible?

the cd/dvd combo drive crapped on me as it only reads CDs now, no dvds. I did however steal a dvd rom drive from a Tr3ap1 , which is also the UJDA755 model so i'm assuming it well work.
Well when i tried disassembling the v505 it was impossible. i've sat for 2 hours trying to split the halves of the case to gain access and looked online everywhere to see if there were any guides but i have failed.
i even looked at the diagram but it didn't help me as all i could figure out from it were the hidden screw.

I currently have an FE790p. After a few years of use, its getting a bit slow, and I would really like to upgrade to Windows 7 (currently running Vista Business). I get Windows 7 for free through my school, and rather than simply upgrading, I want to do a clean install. I also want to upgrade my current 120GB 5400RPM HDD to a new, bigger 7200RPM HDD.
Is it possible to simply buy a larger drive, install it, and then boot up the computer with windows 7 from a USB flash drive? I'm not sure if this would work, as there would be no drivers present, etc.
I would really like to be able to just keep my old hard drive and all of its contents, and possibly use it as sort of an external hard drive. Is this possible? Furthermore, if I can keep the old hard drive, is there a way to connect it as an external hard drive, and still boot from it?

All of a sudden my OPTIARC BD ROM 5500A drive does not recognize when a Blu-ray movie is inserted. I try to open the drive with a movie inside and it tells me to please insert a disc and ejects the drive.
I chated with the sony analysts and they told me to (in this order after the previous solution did not work):
1. Update WinDVD player
2. Reinstall WinDVD player
3. Update WinDVD player again
4. Restore my C: drive to factory conditions
5. Reset by BIOS
6. Take my laptop to a Sony shop and pay 600 dollars to get this fixed.
Everything points to hardware malfunction, but I find it weird that in my computer the drive is identified as a DVD-RW drive, when I KNOW that it used to be identified as a BD/DVD-RW drive.
DVDs and CDs play perfectly, but it acts like nothing is inside when I put in a Blu/RAy movie. In the device manager it is identified properly as an OPTIARC BD ROM, the driver it has is the generic CD drive windows driver (Sony support said that is what it should have).
Driver: cdrom.sys
File version: 6.0.6000.16386 (vista_rtm.061101/2205)

i noticed my computer only has a maximum of 287 GB while it is advertised as 320 GB. Is this because something is taking up the rest of the space(ie: OS)? But even so would it really take that much space and shouldn't the hard drive in Local disk (C properties still say it's out of 320 GB?
