Sony :: Fan Noise On (NW270F)
Feb 11, 2010I've had this laptop since early December and have noticed a noise coming from the fan. It sounds like a faint siren sound or whirring. I know that's probably an odd description but that's what it reminds me of. It's not terribly loud but just loud enough to be distracting sometimes.
This only happens when I'm not running a lot of stuff (just using Word for example) but when the fan cycles up that noise goes away. Unfortunately, I'm just using Word about 90% of the time so I hear this noise. It will make the noise for a second, then go away for a few seconds, then return.
I called Sony just to ask if there was some kind of setting (I don't know) that could be changed. They said it sounds like the fan needs to be replaced, and set up a home service call. The guy came, changed the fan and...same noise.
I've found a few references to odd-sounding fans on Sony laptops. But I'm wondering if anyone can confirm that this noise is normal and I'll just have to put up with it?

Nov 28, 2009I purchased a Sony VAIO VGN-NW270F/S with a blue ray player. Im trying to play the blue ray using the HDMI out to my Sony 46 inch HDTV, i got an error. After tech support with Sony, I basically am using my tv as a monitor and playing the blue ray there. My question is, what resolution is the blue ray playing in on my TV? The maximum resolution I could choose on the computer is 1366/768....how can i use the Blue Ray in my computer to play the full HD movie on my TV?

Mar 8, 2010I have owned this laptop for 2 months. I don't play video games or watch movies on it, just normal web browsing. After a full charge I only get 1hr 59 min remaining of battery life.
all reviews say average is 3-4 hrs...again, i've never seen it say over 2hr remaining after full charge.
I took it into the sony store and they replaced the battery. this new battery gives me the same result. Is this something i should be concerned about? what are my options at this point?

Feb 12, 2009I have a feeling this not strictly a Dell issue, but did anybody successfully install the 64-bit version of the Java Plug-in?
For me it installs fine and I can see the new Control Panel item (no longer in 32-bit), but IE7 doesn't see it and it thinks it doesn't have a Java plug-in installed .....

May 20, 2009I have a late 2007 MacBook Pro - 2.2ghz C2D (first gen with LED backlit screen). I have problems running internet games. Particularly, I have bad performance with Pogo.com and iSketch.net.
Pogo.com uses Java for its web-based games. I like to play WordWhomp, but it's annoying on my MBP. When I type, there is so much lag that half the time certain keystrokes get dropped. Also, all of the animations on the page are very slow.
iSketch.net is a Shockwave game that is very similar to pictionary. I notice two issues when playing this game: 1. when I'm drawing pictures, if I try to draw a continuous line I get a spinning beachball, which makes it difficult to know exactly where my cursor is, and 2. the game causes my battery to drain in about an hour, versus the usual three hours I get doing various tasks, and causes the computer to become SCORCHING hot.
I know this seems ridiculous, but I'm concerned because my 2.0 C2D PC laptop and 1.6 Pentium M PC laptop both run these games without a hitch and do so with MINIMAL impact on battery life and heat.

Jul 12, 2009I am in Shanghai and went to demo a new Vaio Z at a local SonyStyle store with a 3.06GHz CPU and Dual SSDs raided. The unit had Vista 64bit and 8GB of RAM... surprisingly though, no BluRay just a DVD Burner... go figure...
I tried to have someone explain to me if the design of the Z was changed because on my Z (model VGG-Z27GN) internally there is only space for one 2.5" drive (and nothing else really).
If the new Z's can accommodate 2 HDs inside, some major internal redesign had to be made. Does anyone know if this is the case or if maybe Sony is using some sort of two 1.8" Drives instead that they RAID together

Jan 21, 2009I'm going to buy a FW-390 tomorrow morning and I want to know if the Full HD Screen is necessary or not.
I have heard that the X-Brite Eco's back lighting is uneven so some parts of the screen are dimmer than others which is simply unacceptable.
On the other hand I have heard complaints regarding the Full HD about the fonts being too small due to the resolution being too high on such a small screen ....

Jan 18, 2010Is the Sony F LCD screen the same as the Dell XPS16?
At one time the Sony F was listed as an "RGBLED", same as Dell XPS16. They are also the same size/resolution.
I ask, because, I was at Best Buy this past weekend, and I found that the screen was very washed out looking. I confirmed it was resolution 1920, so it was surely their "Premium" LCD. Every review I read seemed to suggest the RGBLED of the Dell XPS16 was bright (almost obnoxiously so) and colorful. This F Model I reviewed truly did seem pale compared to other nearby monitors.

Nov 4, 2009I am considering buying a secondhand notebook, Vaio VGN-TZ72b. It's gorgeous! All I would get are the notebook and its adapter. The guy bought it from Japan. These are all he has with him now.
BUT, I wonder if I would have a problem with drivers in the future when I clean-install it.
I heard every Vaio has a sort of recovery system that frees you from all concern about drivers

Jan 27, 2009I have a few questions for those with the FW. I'm not a hardcore gamer, but I do occasionally play Warhammer Online, which is a little more graphically dependent that WoW.
My question is with my current specs, will my machine be able to handle it on low-mid range settings?
I also do not plan to order this RIG until sometime in March, are there any chances there will be so upgrades to it by that point .....

Aug 11, 2009I seem to be having a few problems with my wi-fi connection at home.
Up until yesterday it was working fine and i was getting great dl speeds and surfing without any problems. So all of a sudden the connection died out.
Normally i reset the connection and all is well. Well i tried that and no luck.
When i clicked to look for a network connection, nothing happens.
I click refresh and nothing happens. I did switch off the wireless button and turn it back on and restarted the laptop.
But i am still unable to get a connection. The router is fine as other laptops in the house seem to get a connection without any problems.
