Sony :: VGN-FW High Pitched Noise
Dec 15, 2009
I recently noticed a high pitched noise coming from what seems like my screen. I have a VGN-FW w/ a T9600, an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650 graphics with 1GB dedicated video RAM, the extra-wide HD display, and a blue ray burner. I noticed this noise while I was converting a few movies (wich I noticed was taking up 100% of my CPU) and now it seems to be ever present. The only way to get rid of the high-pitch noise is to either turn the brightness on the screen all the way down or continually move the screen-pushing it up and down and such. Whenever I stop moving the screen, the high pitched noise comes back.

The whining sound coming from this computer ( Sony Vaio VPCCW27FX )
I bought one and returned it and got another one hoping this one will come without the whining noise, but i was wrong.
I tried all these steps suggested by other users:I tried the muting mic. through control panel. didn't workI tried to Go to systems -> Device Manager -> Universal Bus Controllers, itreduced the noise but didn't completely cut it and plus my mouse stopped working.
What I found out was, when i boot the laptop in Safe Mode, the noise disappeared. I don't know what else I should do.

I did a search and found a couple threads but didn't see any fixes. I just received a 1645 w/ 720QM processor and 128GB SSD. Even when my laptop is idle it makes a high pitched noise on and off continuously. Is there a fix for this? It's driving me nuts. I have the latest A08 bios.
It seems to be the hard drive or CPU. When running a HDD benchmark the noise changes immediately to a more intense pattern. It's not very loud but when the room is silent I can easily hear it.

I recently got a replacement XPS 13 due to my first one having issues with high-pitched noise coming out from somewhere inside. Technicians and Customer Service couldn't point out the culprit so they replaced the laptop altogether. And now I am having the exact same issue on my replacement machine. I see from different forum posts that this issue was discovered as early as May/June 2012 and it is still out there. I assume this might be "standard", but people don't notice it due to the frequency.Â
For such a premium machine with a pricy tag on it (the model I got: i7, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD (1080p edition btw) was priced at NOK 10495 with standard options) you'd expect such issues to be non-existant, if not fixed by now.Â
I LOVE the XPS 13 in every aspect possible; the lightweight construction, premium feel and solid performance. But I'm often in very quiet areas with this machine, and the noise drives me insane.

I bought a new notebook, a HP Pavilion dv7-3065dx, everything was going ok, no problems at all, opened the box, charged the battery, formatted with a fresh Win7 installation. No problems so far. However, since the second day of having it, I began to notice an annoying high-pitched noise coming from the top-left area of the notebook.
The noise is not continous, it mostly appears only when I hover over the items in the start or context menus, and other selectable items as well, such as the minimize/maximize/close buttons of the windows. It is also audible when Windows is in the "Please wait... Booting up..." screen and when minimizing/maximizing windows.

Here are the specs:

I tried using the hlt command in RM CPU clock utility, like many people have suggested, but the version I have does not even let me check the box. It is an option though, but the writing is in grey and cannot be chosen.
I was wondering if maybe there were some other options i could tweak to lessen the damn noise!
Under "advanced CPU settings" , I can choise the ACPI state to modifiy but there are the only options i could change:
Enable CPU low power
Enable Northbridge Low power
Enable FID/VID change
And i can change the clock divisor to the following:
8,16,32,64,128,256,512.....

I ordered and received my Acer 1410 (Celeron SU2300, WD Scorpio Blue 250GB, Windows 7 64, 2GB RAM) a little over a week ago and while I like almost every aspect of it, I'm wondering if the high pitched noise / whine I'm hearing from it is normal?
Basically I only hear it when there isn't much noise around, but it's still mildly distracting. It mainly comes from the area near the indicator lights, but is most apparent under the laptop where the RAM / HD slot is. For some reason the sound is much louder with the AC adapter plugged in. On battery, the noise is basically gone (but will come back for short periods of time). I can also hear the whine through the headphone jack if nothing is playing (at least on AC power).
What might be the cause of this noise and is there any way I can get rid of it? The RMClock trick doesn't work since the option to "Run HLT command when OS is idle" is grayed out and cannot be selected.
If I decide to return this and get another 1410 later (since the online store I bought it at is sold out right now), would I be likely to get another one with this whine/noise?

I have a Inspiron 15 3537 laptop and I noticed that I can hear a high pitched noise where the Memory/hard drive are located. That noise is louder when I put the battery mode on "battery saving", but I still can hear that noise when the battery mode is set to other mode than that. Please note that I switched my hard drive with a SSD, because I thought that it come from here.
My laptop is still on warranty, I bought it recently (July 2014)
I know that there are posts with this issus, but I haven't found a solution yet.Â
Also, on an other subjet, is it normal that my battery already lost 10% of its capacity after only 5 month of use?

I get an almost constant high-pitched noise coming from what sounds like the left side of the Envy15. The sound is probably in the 16khz range, probably goes undetected by a lot people but I always pick up on it. I've noticed the sound is interupted when I scroll a webpage so I thought it was crappy power regulation for the display or something. However, when same effect is there when using an external monitor and the laptop lid closed.

I just purchased the Dell XPS 13 Ultrabook and I hear a lot of high-pitched noises coming from the keyboard, i think from the right side, but hard to tell. It is really noticable in a quite room, and isn't a solid tone, it has a super short pause in it every second or so, but overall very consistant. It isn't the fan, and when I use Fn F2 to disable wireless/bluetooth it gets a little quiter, and seems a little more constant in the tone. It also isn't the lighted keyboard, it still does it with that off. It also does it when using A/C or battery.
So it might be a combination of the harddrive and wireless and bluetooth, or maybe some other circuits, but it is very annoying. I've seem some others post online about this as well, and am hoping Dell has a way to correct this somehow, but I don't have a lot of hope that a software or firmware update can fix this.
Are others hearing this too? I know some people are more sensitive to these types of noices, but if you put your ear to the keyboard in a quite room, you will hear it. I can hear it when I am sitting up typing at the keyboard, I just put my ear to the keyboard to better tell where it is coming from to describe it.

I have this extremely annoying high pitch sound coming from my mobo.
I have removed everything including graphics card and CPU from the board and powered it on, for the split seconds it turns on I can still here this sound.
I have pin pointed it to the DC jack area on the board.
I have previously repaired this DC jack (3 years ago) and was wondering could a bad solder joint or perhaps a faulty DC jack cause this sound ?
Or maybe something I'm missing ?

Dell Vostro has always had a really annoying (but faint) squeak, when I plug in headphones the squeaking noise literally comes out of them, its worse than white noise but I've lived with it ever since I've had my laptop (about 2 years).
Its hard to describe but you know that interference noise you get when you are about to recieve a text or phone call? It's like that but really high pitched.
Anyway I've just invested in quite a nice 2.1 setup and guess what? The squeaking comes out of my speakers, I've tried to ignore it but its so high-pitched it has actually given me a headache!
Has anyone else had this issue? Anyone know how to solve it? It means I can't use any external audio equipment that uses the headphone jack which is really annoying because the speakers built into the laptop are useless .....

I got a new Studio 1537 from the dell outlet this week. Everything is running great, fully updated and cleaned.
Today after using the laptop for a lil while I turned it off and plugged it in to charge. There is a high pitched noise coming from the laptop. As soon as I remove the power from the laptop it goes away.
Any ideas what this could be? Is this considered normal?

I can hear almost constantly a high pitch noise coming from the area where the key A and S are. what is it?
I doubt that is the HDD since it is more south. Also it's not the fan, I can distinguish the noise made by the fan.
I should probably record it with my microphone.

I just bought a Inspiron 17R, Intel i3, 4GB RAM. I've had the machine for exactly one week and have noticed several times, this high pitch (almost like a digital watch), that comes on for about 3 seconds, followed by a 'click', as if a disk drive was done working. This noise is coming from within the computer, not the speakers. Yesterday, it did it again, except the pitch changed during it's sound; again, followed by the 'clicking' sound.Â
The other thing I've noticed (and maybe I'm oblivious to new technology), is the fan on the inside of the computer doesn't stay on all the time. It comes on about once every 3-4 minutes, at a about a 5-8 second cycle. Maybe it's supposed to do that. I'm use to my old machine's fan staying on most of the time, allowing you to feel the heat being pushed out. Not so much on this one.Â
Now, could these two be related?Â

I just wanna ask something about my laptop Dell Inspiron 1525 because recently it's making a high pitch whistling noise that i think is coming from the hard disk(not sure). But im sure its not from the laptop's fan. Whenever i turn on my laptop,a whistling noise starts, then the machine dies within 2 seconds, sometimes 5 sec. If i press the power button again, it wont start, its showing no life. Unless i replug the adapter and switch on again. But then again, it dies after a few seconds. Back to replugging the adapter again to switch on. Sometimes it takes 5 tries to finally open my laptop without dying. When it's finally done starting up, whistling noise would go away after a minute or two. Then it's like normal again. No noise, no overheating, no sudden shut off, no hang ups, etc. What could be the problem? I am using the charger provided by Dell and without a battery, just the charger directly from the laptop. Im certain it has nothing to do with the battery thing.
Im done with the diagnostics, no errors. I also tried releasing static electricity on machine by pressing the power button for 30 seconds. But still, the problem keeps on happening every time i power on my laptop.
Additional info: I tried removing the HD this morning and use a linux live usb. but still the problem and the whistling sound is there.

I have Z11 with 1600x900 screen and I'm getting sick and tired from it
For starters, gamma was too low, I had to calibrate it using standard Display Calibrator in windows (not that i pretend i have a perfect color perception though) to get more details on shady pictures.
After that it was almost perfect, but color saturation was too high. It can be easily tuned using intel vcard control panel, but I've noticed slight flickering in gray color areas (only when using intel vcard), so I decided to switch to Nvidia card for text editing. But I can't reduce color intensity using Nvidia control panel! Digital vibrance is set to zero by default and can not be negative (at least in current drivers).
It there any way to overcome this problem? Am I the only one noticing? Every time I fire up my text editor, syntax highlighting is more like "Fear and loathing in Las Vegas", even page links on this forum are too purple.
It's not caused by increased gamma, I noticed it long before.

Every minute or so, I'll hear what sounds somewhat like the loud tick of a clock coming more or less from the left side of my laptop. I can't tell if it's fan or hd related, but it's extremely annoying. It's definitely internal, and it's not coming out of the speakers (system volume is set to zero to eliminate feedback possibility). If I had to identify the sound source, it would seem to be coming from somewhere between the Tab and F8 keys. Weird, I know, but that's the best I can describe it.
