Optimus is new technology from NVidia that will greatly simplify hybrid graphics solutions for users and manufacturers.

From my point of view as future Z owner, most important thing about optimus drivers is not been dependent on Sony for NVidia drivers, especialy now when Z is more capable gaming machine..............

Up until recently, many suspected that Apple was just using Nvidia's Optimus technology for its new 15" and 17" MacBook Pros. However, there are key differences which prove this cannot be the case, and Apple themselves have said their technology is different. Unlike Optimus, which sends data from the discrete graphics to the IGP framebuffer, and hence needs to keep the IGP on in discrete graphics mode, Apple's solution powers down the IGP entirely. This means that Apple must actually be using a hardware multiplexer at the back end, just like in all switchable graphics before Optimus.
As far as I can tell, Apple seem to have pulled a coup d'etat with their multiplexer, though, because their switching is supposedly just as seamless as Optimus. I'm guessing that Apple runs both adapters for a short time before making a transition in order to avoid a noticeable delay or flickering. I'd be interested to see how they got over the issue of blocking programs, though.
In any case, Apple's solution has the clear advantage of lower power consumption when running the discrete graphics. However, this comes at the cost of being entirely reliant on Apple's proprietary technology. In particular, Apple hasn't released switchable graphics drivers for Windows, so you're stuck with discrete graphics only if you have some need for dual-booting with Windows. Additionally, Apple's technology doesn't seem to give you a way to change which applications run on which GPU. This means that even if you have a 3D application that you know will run well enough on Intel's GMA HD, you're still stuck using the discrete GPU.

There are a few configurations of L440 laptops with Nvidia GT 720M grafic cards and Optimus (e. g. 20ASS01G00). Is it possible to change the used graphic system in the BIOS (Intel only/NVidia only/Optimus)? And which card is hardwired to the external ports (VGA, mDP)?
Â
(Do this differ from the T440p or the Edge Series, E540?)

I'm currently using Acer Aspire V5-573G, which uses Nvidia GT750M.
Whenever I run games or graphics-intensive program such as the adobe premier pro, the program will continue to run using the Intel HD graphics and not the Nvidia driver.
I've tried changing the settings in the Nvidia control panel to use Nvidia graphics driver for all programs, but running the optimus tool will show me that the Nvidia GPU is not being used for any of the programs.

I'm thinking of buying a Thinkpad E540 with a discrete nvidia gpu. I am planning to install linux on it and I don't really need optimus for it (nor is it well supported) but I'd like to occasionally be able to use it on windows.
Â
I'd like to know if it's possible to completely turn off the nvidia gpu from the BIOS so it works only with the integrated intel one or should I buy one with intel gpu only.
Â
I have read that the lenovo changed the dual gpu implementation on the latest generation thinkpads.

I have a problem with my laptop Lenovo y570. I had a defective disk. After repair and return from warranty service, the Optimus switch on the right side of the notebook blocked or broken. I don't know. The computer used both graphics cards, but after installing the latest drivers works only integrated graphics. It seems that the Optimus switched, but I do not know how to switch it back when it is blocked. I tried install older driver and driver from recoverydisk for both GPU

I recently purchased my new notebook (Lenovo T440p) which comes with OPTIMUS integrated Intel graphic card coupled by GeForce GT 730M 1GB. I tried to play some games; however for some reason in game options show, that my Intel HD card is being used as a default graphic card. This suggests that OPTIMUS technology is not switching the graphic card properly. System running on windows 8.1 Pro 64bit. How to enable Optimus switching?

Looks like our hunches about what's inside the next MacBook Pros are panning out: AppleInsider hears that Apple's got new MacBook Pros running that can switch between integrated and discrete graphics automagically, which exactly describes Nvidia's Optimus dual graphics tech.
If you remember, the unibody MacBooks from Oct. 2008 were the first to use Nvidia's GeForce 9400M, a combination chipset/integrated GPU that ridiculously outperformed Intel's own integrated graphics, and the Pro models at the time could switch between power-saving integrated and beefier discrete graphics, though it requires a logout.
Nvidia got cockblocked from making chipsets for Intel's latest-gen chips (read: Core i3, Core i5, Core i7), ruling out using Nvidia's better integrated graphics; Nvidia canned their chipset business entirely. So! Nvidia's Optimus tech works with Intel's crappier integrated graphics that are built onto the same die as the newer Core processors, but even more seamlessly than before—the computer automatically switches between Intel's power-sipping integrated and Nvidia's monster discrete graphics, depending on what you're doing. No logouts required.
In the demo we saw on a Windows machine, the automatic part of the tech has some drawbacks—namely, it's entirely dependent on software to tell your computer which graphics card to run. But Apple's obviously worked pretty closely with Nvidia on graphics before, so it seems logical they're doing so here, too. Though I don't expect we'll know until the new MacBooks finally arrive, whenever that happens (hopefully, soon).

I was originally under the impression that my laptop (Thinkpad T510 4384-DS9) had NVIDIA Optimus display technology, however, I cannot find any OPTIMUS options in the BIOS under display (or any other section for that matter).
Â
The reason I would like to know is that I have recently purchased a docking station (model: 4338) and 3 external monitors which I would like to use simultaneously.
Â
Forgetting the fact that I'm using Linux, and that for most people this wouldn’t be a challenge worth undertaking, I would just like to know if my system actually supports 3 external monitors and the laptop screen concurrently using the docking station.

I lose about 5~10% of my battery life in a 12 hour period after shutting down my computer and unplugging it from the wall.
Anyone else experiencing something similar? No one else has brought it up for this new Z so I was wondering if I'm just a minority (granted the laptop is new and not many people have it yet)

I am in Shanghai and went to demo a new Vaio Z at a local SonyStyle store with a 3.06GHz CPU and Dual SSDs raided. The unit had Vista 64bit and 8GB of RAM... surprisingly though, no BluRay just a DVD Burner... go figure...
I tried to have someone explain to me if the design of the Z was changed because on my Z (model VGG-Z27GN) internally there is only space for one 2.5" drive (and nothing else really).
If the new Z's can accommodate 2 HDs inside, some major internal redesign had to be made. Does anyone know if this is the case or if maybe Sony is using some sort of two 1.8" Drives instead that they RAID together

I'm going to buy a FW-390 tomorrow morning and I want to know if the Full HD Screen is necessary or not.
I have heard that the X-Brite Eco's back lighting is uneven so some parts of the screen are dimmer than others which is simply unacceptable.
On the other hand I have heard complaints regarding the Full HD about the fonts being too small due to the resolution being too high on such a small screen ....

Is the Sony F LCD screen the same as the Dell XPS16?
At one time the Sony F was listed as an "RGBLED", same as Dell XPS16. They are also the same size/resolution.
I ask, because, I was at Best Buy this past weekend, and I found that the screen was very washed out looking. I confirmed it was resolution 1920, so it was surely their "Premium" LCD. Every review I read seemed to suggest the RGBLED of the Dell XPS16 was bright (almost obnoxiously so) and colorful. This F Model I reviewed truly did seem pale compared to other nearby monitors.
