Sony :: Anyone Using Bloatware?
Mar 20, 2009
Does anybody use bloatware that come with Sony notebooks at all? The only one I use is Roxio Easy Media Creator as I find it usefull to burn DVD and it uses little resources. Other than that,
I don't use them at all. In fact, there is not even a trace of them when I do clean install

I bought a pre-configured model and don't have the CTO Fresh Start option, so I'm trying to deal with the various software "extras" Sony so thoughtfully provided. I've identified and removed some of the most obvious, but there are a number of Sony or VAIO things that I don't recognize or understand.
I gather that I don't want to delete the Sony Care Center stuff, but what is "PMB" or "Sony Home Network Library" or "VAIO Content Metadata ... stuff" or even "Windows Live ... stuff", etc?
Is there a list anywhere of the either (a) all of the bloatware that can be removed (i.e., uninstalled) or (b) what the various bloatware programs do?

i just checked what's installed.. and it's just sony's "movie story" and other stuff like that, along with fingerprint reader.. etc. this doesnt really seem like bloatware to me, i checked through the list and i really don't notice anything that i'd consider bad (like trialware)
are those sony programs.. like Vaio Media Plus.. what people keep referrring to as bloatware? i read that people that choose fresh start still have some stuff preinstalled, i'm just wondering what it is exactly that they still have installed?

I have recently purchased a custom fw series from sony style. Its great, apart from the performance. I have a 2.4ghz, 320gb 5400rpm, 4gb ddr2 ram, ati 3650 model, but internet browsing seems slow compared to my sisters 2.4ghz 2gb ddr3 ram macbook unibody.
I guess this is because of all the applications on the sony. I do not do any photo/video editing stuff all I do on the laptop is internet browsing, movie watching, listen to music and do office documents.
Does anyone know what I can safely uninstall to reduce the processes number, most of the time its 98, and thereby increase the performance.
Currently windows task manager says the cpu usage is 12% and physical memory is 40%, I have no idea what that means so if someone could explain I'd be very grateful.
One final point, I have heard that new computer owners are supposed to create recovery disks? What are these and are they actually needed?

I am usin a VAIO VPCEB15FX
I have been fiddling with the restore today, since having to do to a previous issue. If you restore using recovery disk it allows you to delete the recovery partition (9GB), however this method will still uses up 3GB (1GB System and 2GB for something else). If you go with removal of the restore partition and use the recover disks. It will eventually allow you to choose what to install (bloatware). There is a catch, once you have in stalled the drivers required and the software you want, upon reboot and the system loads up, you will notice the error that says "Windows could not complete installation. To install Windows on this computer, restart the installation." Now as soon as you see this if you ctrl-alt-delete and access taskmanager and you end process of audit.exe it will then finish starting windows. Apparently this app prevents you from using windows with out all the crap the system comes with. S! and to think after a previous issue with people complaining about bloatware they provided tools to remove. Well looks like they need to do it again.

I'm trying to remove the dreaded Sony bloatware from my new TT. Is it the case that by purchasing a set of Recovery DVDs from Sony, I will be able to initialize my TT without the bloatware? (Then this might save me the hassle of a semi-clean install, and something going terribly wrong during the process).

I've read the forum on remoing the bloatware and also several articles from 2007 that say Dell was giving the option of not having the addition programs installed on XPS systems. I saw no such option when I ordered so I was curious about this in regards to the studio xps 16.
My questions are how much bloatware is actually still being installed? How hard is it to remove and does it actually speed the computer up? Are there any other advantages to removing it such as less heat from not running as much/hard? And finally are there any programs worth keeping ie Dell dock etc...? Many opinions will be appreciated and thanks.
Sysyem config: t9550 cpu, RGBLed 1080, 4670 1gb gpu and 320 @7200 hdd.

I ordered my SXPS 16 a few days ago. Is there really enough bloatware that it's that important to reformat once I get my laptop, or will simply uninstalling via the Programs & Features menu be sufficient to get rid of the crap I don't want?
Another question: When I get my free Win7 upgrade DVD in October, will it be advisable to reformat then (and can you reformat via an upgrade disk?) or will simply doing an upgrade install of Windows 7 be just fine?
I'd rather avoid the hassle of doing any reformatting, but if bloatware is that big of an issue, then I probably should.

I've read all over the internet how some people, upon buying a branded laptop/notebook, immediately format and reinstall Vista in order to drop some of the bloatware that comes pre-installed, taking up resources.
How prudent is this practice with regards to DELL's laptops -
in particular the XPS 16? I imagine a lot of the bloatware can easily be removed using Vista's add/remove utility; however some people seem to have trouble completely getting rid of some DELL security software

It was easy to get rid of the Acer games--most of those are trial versions anyway.
But what about these?
Acer Arcade Deluxe - Acer games have been deleted, keep the arcade for videos, music, pictures, or let WMP, Media Center handle these?
MS Office - trialware At some point I may buy MS Office. Do I need these as placeholders?
Activation Assistant
Excel 2007
One Note 2007
PowerPoint 2007
Word 2007 - haven't used, but have some old Word docs may need to open. M$ replaced Word with "Works Word Processor" in MS Works.
MS Office Live Add-in
Office Live Add-in help
Office Live Add-in workplace
Windows Defender - replaced by MSE--still needed?
Vista "My Stationary" - have one letterhead template created from MS Works. rest probably won't get used.
NTI Backup Now 5 - think these two were freebies from Acer "partners" for registering, and solicit you to buy the "full" version
NTI Media Maker 8
Software Informer - must've downloaded this, but don't know if it's reliable, and if it's a good idea to let third-party software update by itself...............

just got a new Acer 6530 laptop and it has SOOO much bloatware, a lot of things that i don't even need. I like how Dell had like zero bloatware. i like Acer's program that backups the whole system though. Does Vista have something like that?
Should i delete all the programs from Control Panel or is there a way for me to install a version of Vista (downloaded copy from a torrent site) and then use the key provided from the Acer laptop so I know it'll only install Vista?

I did not register it with Lojack before the reformat. Is there a way to do that now? I have found a couple threads but nothing is definite

I've been thinking about buying the dv5t from HP for college.
people sometimes recommend to reformat the whole system in order to clear out all the junk "bloatware" that HP sticks in there.
Well anyway I was thinking of buying the DV5t with programs like; photoshop, Norton's anti-virus, and that lowjack thing for computers.
if I reformat the system to clear out the bloatware, would that get rid of those programs?
And if it doesn't does HP give me a CD inorder to reinstall them?

So I just bought this Dell Studio XPS 13.3 inch ( which I now found out is called the 1340 ) anyway I decided to go with this over the Sager .
I am so incredibly pleased with this it is not even funny. Basically I feel that Dell built this specifically for me - What I do for a living restricts me from using Macs, but this Dell Studio XPS 1340 really brings that durable high quality
great workmanship indestructible feel that the beautiful Macbooks offer - I hear a lot of negative talk about " bulkiness ", but not enough talk about how extremely solid it is built.
You know how some laptops are flimsy, whether it be the screen, keyboard, or the complete laptop as a whole ( cough-HP Pavilion-cough ) well this Dell Studio XPS 1340 has such a solid tough feel to it that I'm in love. You can really tell Dell stepped their game up .....
