Nov 25, 2009I 've never tried installing Linux on any of my computers.
I have Acer1410 and after reading alot about Ubuntu I want to install it on my Acer. Once again - I have no clue how to do it, what do I need and etc. My installation expirience is Windows XP, Vista, 7.
At present time I have Windows7 on my Acer. I want to create second partition for Ubuntu and have some type of boot menu with a choice.
Is there any guide avialable for dummies like me on How to install Ubuntu, where to get it from, how to make dual boot on Acer and etc.

Jan 31, 2010my spacebar snapped off after moderate use on a one month old Acer. Tech support is willing to receive and fix it, but I need to be using this laptop and cannot be laptop-less for 16 days.
So I wanted to buy my own keyboard and was looking at this:

Now the page up and down keys are in 2 lines instead of 1 and these keys look bigger, but is the dimension of the keyboard identical to 1410 before I buy it?

May 22, 2010Had a search on the forums and couldn't really find this.
Is it possible to change the Acer 1810T keyboard to a thinkpad one?
Are they the same size? Could it work?
I love the Acer, just not its keyboard and miss the thinkpad keyboard - which really encourages typing. The acer really doesn't.
If the thinkpad keyboard isn't possible, what else might be?

Nov 25, 2009I had originally planned to get an HP Mini 311, but the Timeline 1810 seems like I'd be getting much more for the money, even with weaker video capabilities. The problem is I'm having incredible difficulty finding any reviews or user feedback on the 1810.
How is the video playback on the 1810? Can it do HD flash with or without v10.1? Likewise, I'm not really a PC gamer at all, but I do enjoy playing Civ 4 once in a while - think it could run on an 1810?
What's bootup/shutdown time for Windows 7?
How is it in terms of noise and heat?
How's the keyboard? That's another big complaint I had with the Mini, the keyboard feels very cheap and breakable.
What is Acer customer support like? Are they easy to get answers from? Are they willing to fix things, or is it an argument even under warranty?
lastly: where's the best place to get a Timeline? It doesn't look like Acer sells them directly.

Mar 2, 2010I am interested in buying an Acer 1810 Timeline, given all that I read in this forum. Just one brief question for those who own one:
The 1810 has both a HDMI as well as a VGA port. Is it possible to display onto *two* different external monitors, each one connected to one of these ports? (In thinkpads one can do this by switching off the internal LCD.)
Acer :: Realtek HD Audio Cannot Set As Input Source
Jul 31, 2009With my PC I can record streamed audio via Audacity. However I can only see the microphone as an input source for I/O inputs. I have looked at all settings and cannot find anything relevant. It seems you cannot also run the Realtek control panel presumably this is a Acer configuration.

Sep 11, 2014It worked yesterday but as of this morning no sound. The Realtek highDef sound device has the current driver and is identified as operational by the Win 8.1 device manager, but no sound comes out from any source. Rolling back the driver to an earlier version did result in a pulse of static during the changeover but still no output.
As side note the Devices and Printers button is no longer working in Classic Shell.

I want to overclock the proccesor to about 2.0 or even 2.1, no higher so i dont burn the chipset. Also if anyone else has any advice for Aspire 5520 Laptop's please tell me.

Nov 14, 2009In August I purchased an Acer 751h, 2GB RAM and 250GB HD. It came with Vista, which was pretty awful, but since I installed Win7 on it, I don't want to put it down because it performs so well. It's BLAZING fast, a great little machine and I absolutely love it.
My mother needs a new computer and she really likes mine. I'm considering giving it to her and getting myself the new 1410 - what do you think? Does the new processor in the 1410 make that big a performance difference?
In the benchmarks I've read, even the single core version (apparently there is also a dual-core 1410) is twice to three times as fast as the Atom in my 751 - that's pretty impressive.
I can only imagine that the 1410 with a clean install of Win7 would absolutely FLY. It would also be nice to have the different touchpad buttons and wireless N.
What do you guys think of the 1410?
Also, is it worth it to get the dual core model over the single core?
Also to confirm, the 1410 has VGA-out AND HDMI? This would save me from buying an adapter for when I need to give presentations, as most projectors are VGA-only.

Dec 1, 2009I just had a blue screen of death (dump screen) for the third time in 2 months and after reboot, i get this screen:
What can i do now? I would like to recover the files i have in the HDD, as i know if i send this to Acer, they'll wipe out everything or replace a new HDD. Can i open the laptop and try to plug the HDD to some enclosure to get the files out?
Will that void the warranty?

Feb 24, 2010My 1410 has a problem with the display out function. It works fine with both the HDMI and VGA output when the lid is open. However, when I close the lid, the display is okay for a couple of seconds then it flashes on and off intermittently on the display that I hooked it up to. It happens with both the VGA and HDMI output signal. It only happens when the lid is closed, even though I set the computer the do nothing when the lid is closed. I thought it might be a software/driver issue, but I installed the most recent chipset and VGA drivers from the acer website with no change. This is an important feature for me to have because I use the computer with an external display the majority of the time. I am running windows 7 home premium 64bit. Their tech support has told me that Acer computers are set to not work with an external display when the lid is closed.

Sep 23, 2009I have a Gateway EC1803h which as far as I can tell is identical to the Acer 1410 except for the design of the case, so I'd like to ask this to the Acer users since there are many more with the 1410 than the Gateway.
I'm running Windows Vista. I've disabled the ACPI Lid driver by changing the driver to "Volume Manager" as suggested by various internet sources for fixing the problem where closing the lid, even with the close lid action set to "do nothing" can cause the lcd to not turn on again when opening the lid.
So the problem is with hibernation. If I hibernate the machine, then resume again within let's say a minute or so, it comes back up fine. If I hibernate, then wait a longer amount of time, say 10 minutes, I can see the BIOS boot, the "Resuming Windows" splash screen, but then when I'd expect to see the login screen, instead the laptop screen turns off, and I see nothing. Oddly enough, at this point, if I plug in an external monitor, I can see the login screen there, so the OS is running properly. I can even log in. But at this point, I cannot Fn+F5 to enable the laptop screen. It's like the laptop screen has been disconnected/disabled/removed, whatever you want to call it.
Another weird symptom is that at this point, I can usually see a "System" process that ends up taking up 100% of the CPU processing, all of the time (not just spikes), so the task manager basically stays at 100%.
This feels like a software/driver issue to me, but I've been unable to find any other Acer 1410 or Gateway EC1803h users who've experienced this. I've tried the video drivers on the Gateway site, Acer site, as well as drivers from the Intel site. Same behaviour. I'm contemplating exchanging it for another unit, but only if there's a chance this is indeed a hardware malfunction.

Aug 18, 2009Looking to pick up a laptop/netbook very soon and I am pretty much sold on going with the 3810TZ but now I am seeing a lot of talk about the 1410, which unless I am mistaken, is lighter than the 3810TZ, smaller, faster (not by much but has a 3500 cpu vs the 2700) and cheaper (450, vs best deal I can find on 3810 which is 550). Same features/memory/etc?
Any actual knowledge of when the 1410 will be released? I need it very soon (for a trip in a few weeks) and i cant tell from reading these forums if it will be out then or not until october.....

Jan 21, 2010I Cant get 5.1 DTS spdif audio on my Windows 7 64 bit 1410 Acer laptop using ac3 with toslink into receiver. I'm hoping my laptop supports surround sound output but I fear it may not. I downloaded the full AC3 version since I'm using 64 bit OS. Under config speakers with windows media center I setup 5.1 speakers and clicked test and I did get a specific sound to all my speakers through my receiver. Also when I click speaker icon on bottom right of screen to get realtek digital output properties/ supported formats - I click test sound for DTS and I also get a separate ping to my 5 speakers. Under realtek advanced tab however I notice default format is limited to two channel.
Under ac3 filter config main tab I set speakers to 5.1 and checked use spdif. Under spdif tab I checked use spdif output format to 5.1. spdif passthrough I checked DTS and AC3. Under spdif/DTS mode I tried all 3 settings- auto/padded/wrapped. I'm only getting 2 channel digital audio. I think AC3 is not working right because while playing a DTS movie I don't see a AC3 icon on system tray and when I turn on ac3 config while still watching movie, SPDIF status says No data and I don't see any green spike bars for audio levals. Do I need to force AC3 to work somehow? Do I need a different mediaplayer to use as a front end? Or do I need additional software/ codecs like hailsplitter or something?
My AC3 must be working a little bit because before I downloaded AC3 mkv's would refuse to play at all. I have divx 7 by the way for video support of mkv's. I noticed even after I downloaded divx 7 for mkv support mkv's still wouldn't play without AC3. I'm using windows media player and windows media center for movies.

Nov 21, 2009I have an old Sony Vaio VGN-FS742/W and just got an Acer Aspire 1410. The 1410 has a 2GB PC2-5300 (333 MHz) stick of RAM. The Vaio has a 1GB stick of PC2-4300 (266MHz) RAM.
I've read that running two RAM sticks of different speeds makes them both run at the speed of the slowest stick. Could any advise whether my 1410's performance would be better by adding the 1GB from the Vaio to have 3GB RAM running at 266MHz, or just keep the 2GB already in the Acer running at the quicker 333MHz?

Nov 16, 2009I just bought an AS1410 SOLO last month and yesterday it would not boot up at all. Called Acer tech support and they said send in for the warranty work on the notebook.
The thing is I have to pay for the shipping and to send in their defective product. Is it Acer policy? If it is then it sucks. I have a ThinkPad T43p and when I needed to send it in for warranty work, Lenovo sent me a prepaid box and all I have to do is drop the box off at any UPS store. I forgot to mention that the tech support personnel, their attitude are like I don't give a damn about your problem, you're already bought our product and you need our support now. So give it another thought before you buy any Acer product.
Acer :: Can't Load Windows 7 X64 On 1410
Oct 23, 2009I have been trying to load a retail version of Windows 7 HP x64 using USB on my Windows Vista HP x86 Acer 1410. I am able to boot from USB and the Windows 7 install program starts. I select Custom Install to do a new installation (not an upgrade). After I select the partition to install to, I get an error message like "can't find a system drive to install to..." I have tried this on two different 1410's with the same results.
It was the particular USB SD Card Reader I was using. I don't have a 4GB USB drive so I was using a USB SD Card reader and an 8GB SD card. I switch to a different Card Reader (same 8GB SD card) and it worked first time!

Nov 12, 2009I have till Friday to exchange my Acer Aspire 1410 SU 3500 for the SU2300. I am seeing some people show the benchmark is much higher for the SU2300. Of course I would like to have the faster unit and better unit since I am spending $400. Nov 20, 2009I decided to give the PLL mod a try so I can overclock to 1.7GHz in my 1410. I got ahold of a soldering iron and an old motherboard that I practiced on, and it doesn't seem too bad once you get the hang of it.
Now that I've decided to go ahead, I try to take the case of my Aspire 1410 apart, and with all the screws removed, hard drive, memory, wireless card, I can pry the front of the case open ok, but as I get near the back (fan exhaust one side and lock/ethernet other) It seems locked in place somehow and don't want to break anything.
Is there a guide or service manual or something?

Oct 17, 2009Anyone who has the Acer Aspire 1410 been able to play Battlefield 2? The game installed fine. Any time I go to start it, the screen flashes a few times like it's loading, then just dumps back to desktop. Has anyone successfully installed and played Battlefield 2 on this machine?

Dec 18, 2009I found a couple other reviews where people said they had a noticeable (more so on dimmer settings, for me) screen flicker with their timelines. I have the 1410 with su2300 proc. Anyone else noticing this problem? It's enough to distract me, which can be annoying, but I'm a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to the visuals.
