Acer :: 1810T 11.6" Vs. 3810T 13.3"
Feb 19, 2010
I’m a Flight Attendant and i’ve been travelling for 20 days in a month for the last 3 yrs with my Acer Aspire 5670 (3kgs/6.6lbs). Common sense has prevailed and i have decided to stop punishing myself and buy a new Ultraportable Laptop.
I looked at these 2 laptops.
1. Acer Aspire Timeline 1810T – 11.6” Screen, 1.4kgs/3.1lbs
2. Acer Aspire Timeline 3810T - 13.3” Screen, 1.6kgs/3.6lbs
Both the laptops have same Specs like Core2Duo Su7300, 4 GB Ram, 320 Gb Hdd and the only difference is the Screen size and Weight.
which one of these laptops i should buy…?
I know some of you will say to go to a store and check them out. Well i went to a computer store and saw them side by side. I tried reading some text on websites and also played video on both of them. However even after spending about 2 hrs at the store i still can’t make up my mind as to which i should buy…?
My usage is as follows…
1. Internet Surfing… about 15-20 tabs open in Firefox.
2. Itunes playing in the background at the same time.
3. Watching videos on Youtube & VLC Media Player.
4. Editing Photos in Picassa.
5. I do not do any Gaming at all.................................

I was looking at the Acer Timeline 3810t and I am thinking about purchasing it because the battery life is great and so is the performance. Yet, the one thing I found that may hold me from purchasing is the stiff mousepad buttons brought up in many reviews. I was wondering if anyone who has this laptop has experience with the touchpad buttons. Are the really stiff that it would annoy someone who uses their laptop on the go without an external mouse?

On the stock settings it would not play any of the HL1 engine games smoothly. (cs,day of defeat, etc)
I fresh install win7, update drivers and it's the same deal. 10-15fps for a 10yr old game.
Anyone got a timeline enjoying these games?

Owners of the Acer Timeline 3810T-6775:
What model SSD is in your Acer Timeline 3810T-6775?
Is it the 1st or 2nd generation of the Intel X25-M?
Please note when and where you purchased your Timeline.
reference: [url]
The second-gen X25-M's extensive under-the-hood changes are capped by a new skin. Gone is the black exterior of the old drive; in its place is a bare metal casing that's gone unpainted in an attempt to further reduce costs. A black metal shim has been added to bring the drive up to a standard 9.5-mm thickness, though.
It's a good thing that there's a color contrast between the old and new models, because Intel intends to produce both as its customers make the transition to the new hotness. One may also differentiate between generations based on their model numbers: The old ones end in G1, while the new ones are tagged as G2.

I've only had it for about an hour and a half so I don't many first thoughts but the keyboard is nice, build quality seems excellent, screen is beautiful, and just an amazing machine. I tried to take some pics but my camera isn't that great and unfortuantely the LCD is broken so I can't see what the picture is going to look like.
If you want me to take a picture of anything I can try or ask anything go ahead I'd be happy to answer. I'm thinking of doing a video in a few days and putting it up on YouTube because there isn't much about this laptop.

I've got an odd problem - my iPhone neither charges nor is recognised by USB2 on my 3810T. Tried same lead and phone on desktop and other PCs no problem. I'm running Windows 7 home premium 64 bit on both laptop and main PC.
My normal iPod classic connects and charges fine via the 3810T as do other peripherals like the external DVD-RW and memory sticks. Sony Ericsson mobile phone connects and charges too.
Can anyone explain this or has anyone either had the same problem or have connected successfully with an iPhone?

Just got my new notebook and registered successfully for the win 7 upgrade.
I notice that the machine has 4GB RAM so it surely makes more sense to install Win 7 64 bit...? Anyway I have two other copies of the full version of Win 7 on pre-order for our home desktops which come with both 32 and 64 bit versions.
One of our desktops is generally used for office tasks so could I use the Win 7 32 bit upgrade intended for my Acer Timeline for that and do a fresh install of one of my full Win 7 home premiums on my new Acer Timeline?
Basically, is the upgrade locked to the associated Acer laptop?

Having some very strange Win7 RC install problems on my Timeline 3810T.
First - If the SATA was in AHCI mode in the BIOS, I would get a BSOD every time the partitioning was complete and copying files begun. When this was switched to IDE mode, installation went off without a hitch. This is with the machine's stock 320GB hard drive.
Second - I've received a Corsair P256 SSD drive, based on a new "very compatible" Samsung controller. After installing this SSD, the BSOD occurs no matter which mode I'm in (IDE or AHCI). I cannot seem to find a way around this. I've tried loading all different version of AHCI drivers from Intel for the ICH9M-E, but no go.
I'd really like to unleash this SSD

I just installed windows 7 and used all the vista ultimate 64 bit drivers from acers website as well as installing the epower management. I have a few questions...
Which company do I pick for the webcam? I cannot find out which came with this computer
When I hit the green leaf, the icon no longer pops up on the screen, but it does seem to do the same thing as it did on vista, I just have no notification... is this normal for W7RC?

1) SU3500 + ATI HD 4330 better than SU9400?
My usage would be web surfing, office apps, music/movie playback, 0 gaming.
I tend to multitask, open many tabs when browsing, plus run several apps at one-go etc.
2) Can I easily replace the HDD with a SSD and will it support the 2.5inch SLC ones?
3) Are there official 9 cell batts for this model out yet?

I am running Windows 7 RC1 on the 3810t, and have been experiencing some weird issues.
I am hoping that someone in the NotebookReview community has already struggled with these problems and can help me resolve them.
The first issue concerns the laptop screen. When on battery power, it seems to fluctuate in brightness and contrast without my express permission. I have looked around in video card and power settings, as I thought that maybe this was a "feature" to save battery power or something, but have been unable to find anything.
Secondly, the computer sometimes goes to sleep long before the time delay for inactivity has passed. The last straw came yesterday, when I continually struggled with waking my compy up, and then having it go to sleep three or four seconds later, over and over again. I won when i yanked the battery out. Except that I wanted to use the computer, so I guess the computer won...
Anyways, I think that this machine is great. The battery life is amazing, and it runs quickly and smoothly (I have the 3810t-6775 with an SSD --the performance of the SSD is incredible). Hopefully someone can help me with these minor (read: major) issues so that I can transcend into computing bliss.

After 6 months of moderate use, the battery on my 3810T seems to not want to fully charge. The battery indicator in windows (win 7 home premium 64bit), shows the max charge at 88% and the front led stays yellow for a long time when plugged in (over 12 hrs) before finally just turning off instead of going to blue to indicate a full charge.

When the Timeline series came out, I figured it was the new laptop that I wanted to get and spent the last month or so trying to decide which version to get. When newegg ran the 13" with the SU9400 and the 80GB SSD I figured that was the one for the price. My old laptop had an 80GB HD in it and I only used about 40, so why would I need a 500GB HD? Well I finally bought it and got it yesterday. I've been playing around with it for a day and was deleting some of the garbage installed on it like 20 games! After a while of that I checked to see how much space was on the HD and to my surprise it said 28.0GB Free of 60.5GB!

Disassembly, Bluetooth Install and other interesting findings:
A view from above find the tabs holding the keyboard in on the top edge above the F keys:
There are 5 of these tabs on the top row of the keyboard. Press in the middle one with a micro flat head, and use another to pry up the back of the keyboard. Press the rest of them in and they will bow the keyboard out. Only pry from the middle, as this will enable the keyboard to slip under the 2 tabs on the sides.
Once the keyboard is popped out, flip up the black tab to release the ribbon cable. Set the keyboard aside.
Remove the screws at the yellow dots, and disconnect the ribbon cables in the red squares. Simply stick your fingernail under the black tab and gently pull up. They are the same style as the keyboard connector.
Flip over the machine, and remove all screws at the yellow dots. The red dots are rubber stoppers that must be pulled out of their holes to expose the screws below. They come out fairly easily using a small micro flat head screwdriver to pry them out. There is double sided tape on the bottom to keep them in place, and it is good for more than one application, so you need not worry about them falling out later.
Take off the hard drive door and the memory cover and set them aside. To remove the hard drive itself, lift up the black plastic tab and gently pull on it. The whole unit will come out.
Remove the battery, and under the battery there are 2 smaller silver screws in plain sight. These must be removed also.
Flip the machine back over, and gently pull the top plastic piece off. This is one of the easiest laptops I've ever disassembled. DO NOT use a screwdriver to pry the pieces apart, you WILL mar the plastic and it will look bad. There is still 1 small pair of wires connecting the top to the motherboard, but there is enough slack to set the top off of the bottom, exposing the motherboard........................

Is there any way to disable the blue LED that stays on once the battery is finished charging? It only stays on when connect to AC power. The light is very annoying in the dark.
If it makes a difference, I'm running windows 7 64-bit.

Is it possible to have both ssd and hdd? Ok there is not enough room for both, but, beside that, could it be possible to use at the same time ssd and hdd?
Like ssd for os, and hdd for boot? Doesn't the mobo have 2 sata channel?
Btw could be a nice idea to use the pcie expansion slot where to put a 1.8 sized drive...

Modded BIOS 1.27 for Aspire TM 3810.
Version with Intel/Ati/Switchable options in Switchable Graphics menu:
ftp://ftp.ad1ced.ru/JM31.127_SLIC.zip
Extended version with additional unlocked options:
ftp://ftp.ad1ced.ru/JM31.127_SLIC_ad1ced.ZIP
Don't forget to change User Access Level to see all options
advan20092 is AWESOME!
Just to explain how awesome this modded BIOS is: It enables a new INTEL-ONLY graphics setting in the BIOS for the TG models. This disables the ATI chip entirely, basically making the Switchable Graphics TG models act like the T models, which "fixes" the bug where both graphics chips are active after a Resume from Standby.
This gives 3810TG owners the promised battery life of 8+ hours. One caveat - it disables the HDMI port. For HDMI you have to use Switchable or ATI-ONLY modes.

I recently bought a N-wireless gigabit router. It is DLink DIR-655. It is reporting the connect to my 1810T AGN wireless is using G. I'm wondering why if my computer supports N and the router supports N, why am I not getting N?
When I checked properties of my wireless card in my 1810T it tells me it is a Intel WiFi Link 5100 AGN. If I check the properties and it shows N is enabled. However, under Wireless Mode it is set to 802.11a/b/g. Also, while there are several options that include a, b, and g, there is no option for N.

I actually have a Gateway EC1815U and heard it is identical to the acer 1810t.
In the Gateway bios (insyde) I see an option for a device on IDE1. IDE0 is used for the internal hard drive.
I am wondering if there is either
1- a way to expose the 2nd IDE externally to use like a eSATA device with it
or
2 - Be able to install a 2nd IDE device like a SSD to use that interface
I'm wondering out loud and checking here to see if anyone can offer some advice.

I've found out that the webcam is a Suyin, I installed drivers from acer website.. and the result is still terrible.
The webcam is so slow, like 1 fps. Even when not in videocall and using acer crystal eye webcam to set it, it's slow, pixelated and sloow.. I don't mind about the colour, yellowish but adjustable, but I do mind about the fps and quality.
I guess it's a driver matter, because the driver installed is the microsoft's standard one. But I couldn't manage to get better results, also some of the settings like auto and white balance or camera control are not selectable.
