Can anyone comment on the Acer 2930 12.1" notebook?
I am interested to learn more about it.
The strangest thing has happened to my Acer Aspire 2930 laptop today.
I shut it down last night as I normally do, then this morning I turned it on and it wouldn't boot. It goes through BIOS and startup, but then it stops. It doesn't start loading Windows XP from the hard drive, it doesn't recognise boot CDs/DVDs. When I go into the BIOS, everything looks normal except the boot portion. There are several options there, but they don't say what they normally say. For instance, the first boot device, the hard drive, is completely invisible. What I mean is that the option is just not there, but when you move the selection around with the keyboard, you can tell it's supposed to be there. Look below for a better explanation. The other options are there, but they aren't recognising the devices. I have a friend with the exact same laptop and her BIOS shows everything as it should be. She's here now and I'm typing this on her laptop because I now have two dead computers here at home.
I don't get it. It's almost like the BIOS somehow became corrupted. I didn' t even know this could happen without attempting to flash the BIOS or something, and that's not what happened. I have never flashed the BIOS on this laptop. Not only can I not figure out what happened, there doesn't seem any way to fix it. I mean, if the laptop doesn't recognise any devices to boot from... I was thinking about taking it apart and resetting the CMOS, taking out the battery. I think that's the best I can hope for at this point.
I don't have any way of cloning the BIOS from my friend's computer so I guess the next step would be to get a new BIOS chip if the CMOS reset doesn't work? The laptop is unfortunately one month over the one year warranty. I read that there's a way to get the laptop to read an external USB floppy diskette drive regardless of the status of the BIOS, you are supposed to hold the function key plus the escape key or something when you turn on the laptop a couple of times, and then it magically reads from the floppy drive. I would have to somehow buy or get a drive, but I haven't even seen such things in years. Things I can try?
Here is what my BIOS looks like compared to my friend's:
Mine:
2. IDE1 :
3. USB FDD :
4. Network Boot :
5. USB HDD :
6. USB CDROM :
My friend's:
1. IDE0 : Hitachi HTS542525K9SA00
2. IDE1 : HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T50N
3. USB FDD :
4. Network Boot : Realtek Boot Agent
5. USB HDD :
6. USB CDROM :
As you can see, there is definitely something wrong with my BIOS and I believe that's what is causing the computer not to boot.
I was going to order an Inspiron 537 desktop, but am now considering an Inspiron 15 Notebook..............
View 7 Replies View RelatedOne of the truths on the internet is that people complain more than they praise a product, generally speaking. I wanted to take a moment to praise a laptop I bought for my (then fiance) wife 4.5 years ago. A dell inspiron ~8600 (like this one [url]
IIRC, since I'm away from it right now, it has a 1.5 ghz celeron processor, 512mb of ram, integrated video card, 60 gig HDD...
For the entire time we have had it, not one hardware failure. The only "problem" we have had is that occasionally I need to insert a CD/DVD twice before it's recognized....not sure if that's user error, scratched discs, of the drive itself.
This thing regularly sees hours of operation on our down comforter running DVDs with no cooling pad. The underside gets hot to the point you can't leave your hand on it for more than 2-3 seconds. The hard drive has been infected with one virus ("Windows antivirus 2008"), receives highly irregular scans and defrag).
I have never cleaned the vents or taken off an underside panel. It has been lugged around, dropped from 1-foot-18" heights onto hard and carpeted surfaces multiple times. It has no dead pixels, the screen still looks fine (albeit it doesn't perform to today's expectations).
We routinely leave it plugged into A/C power non-stop and drain it till it auto-shuts down. After ~4.5 years, it will perform 2.5-4 hours of web surfing, e-mailing, word/powerpoint, and video activities before being drained.
I was reading some FAQs about proper notebook care and came across how many different rules I was "breaking"....and wanted to point out that this Dell, at least, has taken it all in stride.
I'm considering buying a XPS Studio 16 as a replacement, and have looked at some of the Sager models. My solid experience with Dell makes me want to stay with them, even though it appears the Sager models might have a few upsides in what I'm looking for.....
Looking into the Probook line. How long is battery life, etc?

I can get it configured with the following for $948 shipped:

I have an Acer 5610-4610 system. It was repartitioned to one XP drive for several years. I am finally wanting to put the PQ service partition back on it but none of the folders of the restore CD's have any of the files needed to recreate this partition. I am wanting to put the factory (VISTA Home Premium) system on C. With all the system files and folders from the 3 restore CD's into the PQSERVICE partition. I have no clue how to proceed.
I do remember there was an acer(C) partition and a data (D) partition when I got it. The PQSERVICE partition was there back then.
The first (System) CD has none of the files mbrwrdos.exe or rtmbr.bin
used to create the PQSERVICE system.
I run the ACER Disk Formatter and it cannot find any drives on the laptop.
Weird! From what I've been able to glean my thought was that that the Formatter disk would facilitate creating the correct partitions?
im going to clean upgrade to win 7 64 bit, after i do that i know acer do drivers for web cam ect... but can i download acer software eg Empowering Technology, Acer Arcade Deluxe ect.

Recently I developed this simple application that lets you easily configure CineDash and other buttons functions on Acer laptops. This application, “Acer CineDash Config”, is mainly for mine purposes.
I tested it on my Acer 6935G and Windows 7 64bit version. It probably should work on other models and systems to.
Some of the features that Acer CineDash Config supports are:
•32bit and 64bit systems
•Configuring applications to run and captions for buttons:oArcade DeluxeoEmpowering tech.oInternetoE-Mail•Making and restoring registry backup
•Enabling media keys to work with other programs, like winamp, and restoring original key mapping file
Here's screenshot of it:
I have a wireless network setup between my desktop w/xp pro an my laptop w/vista home preminum Acer 5570Z.
My laptop can open drives & folders on my desktop, but my desktop can't open drives or folders on my laptop it says I don't have permission. I fixed this once before but can't remember what I did.
I have an Acer 6930ZG with a fresh install of windows 7 RC 32bit. I can play Call Of Duty 4, Counter Strike, Flatout 2 etc. with no problems! But when I try to open MapleStory a blue screen appears, and begin to make a physcial memory dump? . MapleStory is a 2D-game, and Call Of Duty requires much more.
I made a little research, and I found out that alot of people have the same problem, and they said it was caused by a conflict with a program or hardware drivers. I have tried to delete my NVIDIA driver, and install it again. No luck.
And yes, I have also tried to run MapleStory in compatibily mode
As I said: It's only in MapleStory I experience the problem, and I don't think it's ram-failure, since I have seen the same problem on a different computer, and I can play Call of Duty 4.
Here is the system log:

does the acer aspire 5583 support 5.1 audio output? ( realtek hd audio)
View 10 Replies View RelatedI had vista installed on my laptop, Acer 6920, (first OS) and it was direct from factory so everything worked fine. I then installed ubuntu and everything still worked fine. I then deinstalled both of those to put on windows 7 RC where all my hardware was working perfectly (minus the fingerprint reader but i honestly couldnt care about that thing) so my computer eventually got pretty bogged down with crap to the point where boot was about 30 minutes. during this whole time my sound seemed to work, but near the end windows stopped finding any internal sound related hardware (the speakers and the mic). For other reasons i did a clean reformat (3 times) and reinstalled 7 Professional 32 bit and when i booted i downloaded all the drivers and everything seemed to install correctly, but when i rebooted the sound still didnt work nor did the mic. the exact error message windows is giving me is "No Audio Output Device found" however when i plug in a headset or a bluetooth adapter + headphones there is audio and it works perfectly. I really need sound to work as some programs crash if they dont detect a sound output and also for monitoring audio recordings.
I have tried installing all of Realtek's drivers. Literally all of them. None of them worked what so ever despite clean installs and deinstalls.
I now am running 64bit and ive almost given up on this problem. I bearly saved this computer and i dont wanna have to buy a new because of sucha stupid issue like this.
More info:
Under the hardware manager in windows there is no tree for sound devices. there was an unknown component which i put forceware on as i thought it was the sound device but no go.

can i swap the GPU or just do some tweaks?
So simply i guess my question is:
1. is it the hardware reached its limits?
2. is it the software/drivers need tweaking?
