Dell :: Studio XPS 13: 9500M G Or 9500M GE?
Jun 5, 2009I'm doing a bit of research on the NVIDIA 9500M card offered on the Studio XPS 13.
Notebookcheck.com claim that the card fitted to the Studio XPS 13 is the 9500M G, but the G is not a Hybrid SLI card (i.e. two GPU's):

Dec 28, 2008I managed to snag a minor graphics card upgrade for my laptop and installed it. I changed up my 9500m to a 9600m gt. Everything seems to be going great, just needed an HDTV to get it going For some reason it would only initially post video through the HDMI.
Anyway, my issue is, while the machine runs great in windows I can't for the life of me get it to display anything before that. Which includes the BIOS boot screen, the BIOS itself, the Boot Menu or even my Windows XP disc.
Like I said, games run great, windows runs great.

Nov 20, 2008here's the results of my 3DMark06 benchmarking.
All tests were run on a vanilla installation of Vista Ultimate 32-bit SP1 with only RMClock and 3DMark06 installed on the system, and HWMonitor included to keep an eye on temperatures.
All tests run at 1366x768 (native res) with default options.
Only drivers with WHQL certificates for this series were included; which means two that supposedly had them, 174.74 and 174.93, aren't shown.
SUMMARY
- The 174 series of drivers is officially obsolete - they clearly benchmark lower than the newer 175 or 176 drivers. Upgrade if you want to.
- 175.61 continues to be an anomaly, with higher-than-average HDR/SM3.0 scores, both in my previous benchmarking before this comparison, and during it.
- The 176 series is probably your best bet overall.
- Temperatures never really were an issue - 73 Celsius was the highest I saw.
Here's the chart - focus on the GPU score instead of the overall 3DMark to remove the variance provided by skewy CPU tests.
Acer :: Overclocking GeForce 9500M GS On Aspire 7720G
Jan 18, 2010Over-clocking with RivaTuner. Right now I'm at 500Mhz for core, 1Ghz for shader and 425MHz for RAM.
On idle graphics card is at about 63C and processor at 33C with fan off.
To put some load on system, I used Intel BurnIn standard test and two instances of 64bit version of fluidsGL.exe from nVidia's Cuda SDK (acording to GPU-Z, the load on graphics card is about 93%). Mandelbrot.exe does put some more load on graphics card, but it closes as soon s application looses focus, so it isn't as convenient.
When I run tests, temperatures are around 85C for graphics card and 65C for processor.
I wanted to ask you how much should I overclock the graphics card and what are safe temperatures? I plan to use this laptop for few more years, so I do not wan to cook my graphics card.

First: I would like to update my Nvidea Geforce 9500M GS driver, i went to the site, downloa section. I found quite a list of files, but i don't know wich file i should download.
Secondly i'd like to know if it's possible to link the gemstone control to windows media player. Atm it opens Windows media center, but i think it's not very good to listen to music while gaming.

Nov 11, 2008I have a curious issue that has begun to pop up, I believe after I installed a few drivers from laptopvideo2go. Long story short I tried to reset back to the old Acer drivers and I spent a few hours trying to get my video to turn back on.
But here's the actual problem - some games will randomly minimize on startup and then not allow me to switch to them.
I first noticed this with Frets on Fire, where I would boot it up, it would look like it would work and then stay minimized for a while. Click on it in the taskbar and it would either pretend to go to the game or just sit there, moving my mouse to the top left corner. Alt-Tab, similar, sometimes works sometimes doesn't. If I do Switch To in task manager, it works a bit more often but sometimes takes a few times.
I've now noticed this with COD4, Fallout 3, and Trackmania Nations. Fallout 3 causes the game to crash. I've tried stopping as many open programs/processes as possible and it sometimes fixes it, sometimes doesn't.
If it isn't clear, I have an Acer Aspire 8920G with a 9500M GS. I'm currently using the relatively stock 7.15.1(1.7561) drivers.

Nov 7, 2009I posted here a few months ago about a SLI problem in Vista that was resolved. I have recently installed Windows 7 and have been having more SLI problems. I've installed many different Nvidia drivers from laptopvideo2go, from Dell, and from the Nvidia website.
My problem is that I have a huge performance increase under Power Save rather than Performance Mode.
What I believe is causing this is that when I am running in Performance Mode, it only runs off the 9200 which is slower than the 9400. It doesn't actually use both cards together.
I've noticed significant FPS drop and rendering issues while in Performance Mode while playing Call of Duty 5 and more recently, Dragon Age. However, when I go into Power Save, I get a significant boost in FPS and virtually no rendering issues .....

Sep 27, 2009I've had my laptop since June and have not been impressed with the graphics performance of the Hybrid SLI setup.
I installed nHancer for the first time and started tinkering around with stuff and noticed that some of the games I was disappointed in weren't utilizing both GPUs by enabling the SLI Load Balancing Graph (Vsync has to be disabled for this to work).
Upon further tinkering I noticed that for both GPUs to be used, the game profiles had to be modified with "Hybrid SLI mode" set to "1". Thought I'd share this information so everyone can try and get the most out of their computer.

Acer :: BIOS - They Don't Post Most Recent BIOS Versions Online
Sep 26, 2009I got my laptop back from repair and the papers that came with it said that they not only replaced the LCD screen, but also updated the BIOS to the lates version--1.24
I was messing around with my laptop and the various thermal monitoring programs it has while searching the net why the hell my by-core temps always gets stuck at startup. I kept reading on BIOS, BIOS, BIOS. So I went to acer.com.sg for hopes that a newer 1.25 or so BIOS would be available for my Ciel Noir.
Surprise surprise, they have only the 1.16 (came with my laptop when it was new) and the 1.23 BIOS (mine was presently 1.24, and they don't have it). I downloaded it anyway, and checked the readme. I noticed that the flash utility .exe was named JALA0123.exe and then I noticed through HWMonitor 1.14 that my motherboard was marked JALA0 so hmm...this prompted me to flash the BIOS.
Booted up, got into Windows, fired up HWMonitor and what do you know, now it's working!! HWMonitor reads a different TJMax though, so I adjusted it to be the same as CoreTemp's and Everest, and now it's showing (I hope) correct temps.
Now my question is this: Why does the BIOS that comes from Acer directly i.e. after purchase or repair makes the sensors not work? And why are these BIOSes not available online? Is it possible that they use BIOSes that are for different laptop models, hence rendering the addresses for the thermal monitors different from the actual ones? (I read up that thermal sensors depended on the correct addresses, too.)

We don't want to use "specialize" word here but we know the "how" to get the job done. May 8, 2009I require some help on repairing a bad bios flash for this laptop. The problem started after clearing the bios from with in windows and then using acer esettings to create another password which would save the bios but it seems it did not save properly and resulted in a bad flash.
The laptop no longer boots up, it just hangs with a black screen.
I have downloaded the updated bios file from acer web page and used various methods for other acer models which use a usb floppy with the crisis recovey disk and rename 114.rom bios file to bios.wph but cant seem to trigger the laptop into booting from the floppy using win+b/esc and fn+b/esc.
I have also tried putting the bios file onto a cd with various different file names but again it doesnt want to boot from cd either.

There are 1.22 and 1.23 bioses available.

I've refreshed my bios to 1.07 and I have tried 1.06 and 1.10.
I am not sure if they are official release version, but since I've refreshed my bios with these versions, my computer fails.
In the past, I could use recovery DVD to restore my system, and audio drive work fine, very high quality. Now it's gone, even I use recovery DVD, my audio drive does not works fine.
It sounds like a realtek HD public drive (low sound quality), and I cannot use plug-in microphone when 5.1 Dolby effect opened.

May 25, 2009I just bought a T7500 processor to upgrade my Aspire 5315. I understand that a bios upgrade should be performed before replacing the cpu. I read about some problems with bios version 1.34 and some went back to 1.33 and there is a new bios 1.43 now.

I was trying to play a video and the computer froze. I waited several minutes and nothing responded. I finally had to hold the power button to shut it down. Now it will not go to the bios screen and the screen shows a bit of brightening but does not go anywhere.
I've googled for a solution and there are several pieces of possible solutions I have found but as is too often the case, there were no follow up answers to make the posts helpful or, the answers came tantalizingly close like the following for a similar problem with an acer aspire 5315:
"1. first download the attached zip file and unzip it.
2. burn the extracted disc image to disc using nero.
3. place the newly burned cd into your laptop cd drive tray
4. remove the battery and power cord.
5. press and hold FN and ESC keep pressed and insert power cord and then press the power on button
6. your notebook should power up but without any display.
7. you should see the cd/dvd drive activity light blinking as it reads from the recovery disc.
8. if all is well your laptop should power itself down after about 2 minutes
9. once it has powered down remove the power cord and wait about five minutes.
10. finally insert your battery and power cord and power up your laptop in the normal way............

Apr 28, 2009I recently upgraded my aspire 3623 from a M370 to a M740. The bios needs to be upgraded to operate speedstep of the new cpu. Currently it runs at 1.3 instead of the 1.7 it's supposed to. At bootup it says 1.733 gh but in EVEREST it says it's running 1.296gh. I can't find on the ACER site where to get the BIOS upgrade download. Is there a 3rd party location anyone knows about?

Mar 28, 2010Anyone any information on how to reset a bios password. On Sunday evening after it coming out of sleep mode it asked me for a password? as I haven't set one and couldn't supply it with what it wanted it comes up with the message System Disabled ( 01576 ) anyone with the same problem or is there a default acer password.
I cannot access anything or boot windows as the first thing it does on start up is ask for this password.

Dec 1, 2009This one comes complete with 32 & 64Bit Windows Flasher and on my machine has fixed shutdown issue and cinedash issue. The only thing I noticed when updating is it took 4 to 5 minutes to complete. "NO" SLIC 2.1 or VT Support.
