Acer :: Aspire 5515 - Processor Can Be Upgraded?
Mar 10, 2009
I have an acer aspire 5515. Great machine for me. I am interested in finding out if the processor can be upgraded. It currently has a AMD Athlon™ 2650e 1.6ghz in it. I have not been able to find information on the motherboard for this laptop. Acer site was not much help but I figured it was because the laptop came out around 12/09 but i dont no for sure. I happened upon the emachine site and there is one that looks exactly like it and has the same specs. So I have to wonder if this is an emachine with acer plastered all over it. Does anyone no what the motherboard model is or for sure what the highest processor i can upgrade to, if possible. I see where others say they have put higher processors in it but want to no for sure.

I have an aspire 5515 it came with a amd athlon single core 2650e clocked to 1.60 ghz 3 gig of ram vista 32 bit and a built in ati radeon x1200.
i’ve been researching and discover that my board uses a s1 socket and that the board and the version of the bios will support a turion x2 processor ive been looking to see if anybody has done this and theres some people that claim they swap the athlon for an athlon x2 but the original processor only uses about 15 watts and the one that they claim to change was 55 watts soo i dont think thats true im looking at a turion x2 tl66 2.3 ghz running at 35 watts will this work and will the power supply handle the difference and will the temperature be ok
i want to do this for gaming will the 2650e single core at 1.60 for the turion 64 x2 2.3 will it be a worth upgrade ?

I bought the Walmart special and am actually happy with it. I didn't have much money to spend and after removing all the crapplications, installing AVG etc... it's running well. If I had XP to install I would have done it from the start but I'll live. I'm even managing to run WoW with no issues after tweaking in game specs and playing in the Catalyst Control Center.
Now...my problem. I uninstalled all the Acer utilities and now eRecovery will not work for me. I'd like to back up the OS and drivers so if need be I can restore to factory or at least close. Can I do this with NTI Backup Now? or will that just back up folders and files? If not what can I use to make restore discs.

I recently purchased an Acer Aspire 5515 Laptop. Has a built in Wireless card. It detects the hotspots with no problem. It connects to the available networks with no problem. But it will not connect to any internet service. Strange, but that is also what trouble shooter says. Connects to network, but not to internet, thus browser cannot resolve to any URL.
I even disabled firewall to see if it would help, but it will not.
Even has issues trying to network at home using ethernet cards. Detects, but will not connect.

I just changed the hard drive on my acer 5515. I also tried to add an operating system using a flash and it won't do anything. I changed the order so it can read from the usb but after that it's stuck on a blank page with a flashing line.

Yesterday, I've been told by an Acer representative that I should upgrade my BIOS as soon as I mentioned slowdown.
So I decided to upgrade with the BIOS from the site at Acer PanAm.
As soon as it said it was making a backup of the BIOS I previously had, it blacked out and turned off. Upon boot, my screen was black, my LEDs were flashing despite the only keys working were Caps and NumLock; and pressing the power button once would turn it off.
So then, as I thought Google was my friend, I searched for guides on how to do a BIOS recovery. Thing is, I don't remember my BIOS version, and I needed to go buy a USB floppy drive to do the Crisis Recovery Disk method. So I managed to buy one for $15, and tried the Fn+Esc solution correctly and endlessly with many BIOS versions, but to no avail.
Also, the laptop had to be downgraded to XP, as when it was previously a Vista with only 766MB of RAM, I couldn't do jack with it without slowing down like an elderly person on Ritalin. Maybe this has something to do with Acer's BIOS being Vista-only?
I suck with computers, so I dunno. I've been told I should change my BIOS chip.

I didn't upgrade my BIOS, it came with the latest BIOS because of the graphics card. The people that have fixed it by downgrading have a older version of the same laptop with a different graphics card.

I bought an Aspire One at Costco with an 11.6" screen. I love the extra real estate, however I am concerned about the processor, which is only 1.25gig. I have the option of taking this machine back. I did not realize that this was not a 1.6gig processor when I purchased it. Anyone have any experience with this model?

I've been having trouble deciding on whether I should upgrade my 5920's processor/ram and if it was worth it.
I play games moderately and I just need it to perform to my standards, so far in testing this laptop it doesn't hold up too well in FPS in the games I play (Counter-Strike: Source, Warhammer, etc).
I was wondering, if upgrading my processor from the T7300 to the P8600 or maybe even the P9500 would help at all in the performance increase.
In CSS, the computer itself gets 230 FPS on the video stress test. In the real time gameplay it holds up to it, but it's just that it isn't perfect and is sometimes skippy and I will get random chops every few minutes or so. I concluded that most of it was due to the heat and possibly due to the slower processor and amount of ram I have (I have 2GB).
If I can't get this laptop working up to par I'm going to have to invest in another one, as I plan on having a laptop that I can use for school and at home on external monitor and accessories without it being the 20 pound 17" gaming laptop.
Another thing is, will using the P series of processor lower my overall laptop heat and power consumption since they are 25W compared to the T7300's 35W?

Hoping to upgrade my daughters 5315 from a celeron 530 to a core 2 duo. So many pages about doing this but my main question is which processors will it accept. CPUID says its a mPGA478 socket but not sure about the chipset whether 960 or 965. Already upgraded to latest bios 1.45.

I have an aspire 5610z and it has the pentium dual core. I was wondering if it is possible to fit a better processor inside, maybe the core 2 duo or something else. Has it even been done with my type of laptop? Im really serious about doing it, but I need this question answered first. Also is there a way for my notebook to accept more than just 2gb of ram?

I have a Acer Aspire 3690. It has a Intel Celeron 420 M @ 1.60 Ghz with 512 RAM (Recently updated to 2 GB)
Now I am pretty sure this is compatible with mine: (Here)
(NewEgg seems to be having problems with the website, just fyi, unless it is my computer)
It is a Intel Core Duo T2300 @ 1.66 Ghz. Now I have been wanting to know if the SOCKET is correct. Now according to NewEgg, it says it is a Socket M. Now according to utilities I have been running it says mine is a Socket 479.
So I looked that up and it turns out is it is basically a 478 (478 Pins) but they just said 479 for differentiating. And I have heard that Socket M and 479 are NOT the same and i have heard that they are, because sites such as NewEgg dont have Socket 479 processors cause they are actually Socket 478 Processors.
So anyways, i wanted to look up the package type to help me identify. My Package is a Micro-FCPGA. Now the one I want to get is a Micro-FCPGA as well. Now NewEgg doesn't tell you this.
So i found this place: (Here)
They called there Socket a: Socket 479 Pin.
Then i scroll down and it says: The Intel Core Duo Processors are available in 478-pin Micro-FCPGA and 479-ball Micro-FCBGA packages. This is 478-pin Micro-FCPGA package. Model: BX80539T2300.........................

(UPDATES: DIY Bluetooth module guide added below)
upgrading my Aspire 5570 notebook more than a year ago. This time, I’m feeling lucky to share some of my experiences about how I finally upgraded my CPU from a Core Solo T1350Core 2 Duo T7200.
Again, thanks to everybody here in Notebookreview forum especially adinu, hoggie, Mack1982, TehSuigi, krazyphire and bigozone for their insights and knowledge that helps me a lot throughout the whole process. So, let’s get started!
Pre-upgrading
Please refer to these post before you start. It'll save you a lot of time and trouble later on.
Upgraded Acer 3680 Celeron CPU to a T5300!
Aspire 5315 CPU Step-by-Step Upgrade Guide
What you’ll need :Your new CPU (make sure it's compatible with your system ie; socket, FSB)Latest BIOS from Acer (upgraded to 1.3505 or latest)A good thermal paste (I would recommend Tuniq TX-2 or Arctic Silver 5 as well)Basic tools (screwdrivers, forceps, kitchen paper)Body static discharger (I would definitely recommend this as a precaution)Some alcohol, ear buds, sand paper grid 600,1200 & 2000 (optional for heat sink lapping)Lastly TIME and PATIENCE (you’ll be needing these a lot definitely!)When you’re ready, lets get our hands dirty.
How to disassemble your notebook?
I found out a very good video tutorial on how to disassemble my Aspire notebook on YouTube. So please take your time to view it and follow step by step as shown to help you to go through the process.
Lapping your heat sink (optional)
Although it’s not necessary, but I would recommend this process as another way to improve heat dissipation on your newly installed CPU. Refer to this page for detailed instructions.
The simple process:Clean your heat sink from old thermal paste residues with alcohol or equivalent of it using ear buds and kitchen papers.Apply a 600-grid sandpaper to smoothen the heat sink surface which comes into contact with your CPU.Repeat the process again with a 1200-gid sand paper until you’re satisfied. Finally, finish up by applying a 2000-grid sand paper to give you an almost mirror-finished surface. Wipe clean any dirt and residues left.....................................

I'm looking for an Intel processor with:
- As high of a clock speed as possible
- 1,066 MHz FSB preferred, 800 MHz if nothing else
- 6 MB L2 cache preferred, 2-3 MB if nothing else
My chipset is a PM965. What is the best processor I can get by Intel that fills the above requirements?
I looked into The T9400 but apparently my chipset isn't compatible.

I just upgraded to a T9300 CPU, I bought it in ebay for £120 only, brand new (not an ES), and it is great. It is much cooler than the T7300 I had. Idle temp is around 32oC where before were around 40-42 oC. Of course I don't know if that was because I put fresh AS paste on the CPU where before the T7300, I think, had a thermal pad (melted on the core).
To be honest though, changing the CPU wasn’t as easy as I was imagined. Unfortunately I didn’t take any photos as I didn’t know what I was doing but in the end all went well. I had to remove the graphic card and in order to remove the heat sink I had to remove a couple of other screws of the back chassis so I lifted it a bit to slide out carefully the heat sink. Then you remove the old CPU, clean the heat sink with ethanol and then place the new CPU, put some AS paste on the core and slide the heat sink in carefully and screw it tight on its place.
It is slightly faster in the games and much faster in using other software like movie maker. The games are running much smoother now but that is with games that are close to 21-24fps. World in Conflict uses a lot of that CPU. I ran the benchmark and with High physics and the CPU usage was 98-100%, both cores. During gaming is much less around 35%, explosions produce CPU usage spikes. Temp of CPU is around 65oC most of time during gaming, but it can go up to 68oC if you demand more from the CPU. My wPrime 32M score was 41s-42s with the T7300 and now is just below 30s (29.687s). My 3Dmark06 score increased as well from 4240 to 4567. I am very pleased with the end result.
Next thing is to upgrade to fast RAM like the 4GB (2x2GB) HyperX Kingston CL4 667MHz or 800MHz, then 320GB WD hard drive Black Scorpio and maybe try to upgrade to a new graphic card compatible with Acer 5920G with at least 512MB memory (9600M GS perhaps).

Screenshots from here.
I admit that one should take this with a grain of salt but still, the fact remains that an upgrade path now exists for the previously-tricky 5920G, and possibly for ALL Acer MXM models!
