Acer :: Can't/won't Say How To Wipe & Reinstall
Mar 19, 2010
A few days ago I phoned Acer's local home office in San Jose, CA. I understand Acer customers, like any of the reported support lines, are hard to get thru to. Fortunately I called their home office as they kindly listened to why I was calling (Acer's recovery instructions conflict and can't be followed), eg; the instructions refer to uses of their "recovery media" disk(s) as opposed to either "recovery disk" or "system disk" (which's what those two 'media' disks are labeled and Acer instructions are 'all over the place'; ie; conflicting and uninterpretable).
Of note, apparently calls from Acer's H.O. and are answered by support after "one" ring. Because Acer publishes some 5 sets of how to's for recovering their AOA150 OS's and few to none of those instructions agree with each other, including the instructions that are mailed with the "system" disk, I decided to at least clear up what the differences were between the "recovery" and "system" disks.
After nearly 20 minutes of repeating my name, most all the details I'd already answered, not to mention having reiterated my question something like 5 times (likely their support people have a so called supervisor who loosely listens to the goings on in their 'boiler room' and pretty likely the workers soon realize to keep the super's off their backs, they simply ask for your name and everything again, just to make it look like they're on another call)......................

I had an HP DV6500t with a 320GB Western Digital Scorpio Black (7200 rpm) with Windows 7 and all my data loaded on it.
After 3 years the HP's motherboard and 8400gs GPU completely fried, so I decided to part out the rest of the laptop and I just bought a Studio XPS 1640. It is beautiful,
it came with the 1gb 4670, the 16inch RGBLED display etc, but only has a 250gb hard drive .....

My Dell Vostro 3450 (windows 7) had been running slowly for a while and after a virus scan didn't work, I decided to reinstall my operating system. I used the OS reinstall disk that came with the computer and that seemed to work pretty well. However, when it came time to install the drivers, I hit a roadblock. I put in the drivers disk and tried to go through the list of what drivers to install first (DSS, then chipset, etc...) but each time I installed something, it didn't seem to do anything-- I would go through the whole process for each one, but the little check mark wouldn't appear next to it in the "My System" list.... See below:
My computer can't connect to the internet either by ethernet or wifi, and can only input info through the cd drive.

3 year old MBP. It still has about a year on Applecare and has RAM added.
I need to switch because Apples are just not for me and I am going to teach an online course. I need a windows based computer.
Does anybody care to help me wipe the computer clean of all my stuff? How to back up the HD and wipe clean the HD?
Anyway, thanks and I hope to get some help on selling this machine. It has a neoprene case and some other things that make it a great notebook for an Apple lover.

The Internet tells me to press F8 on start up then go into Repair your Computer but I don't have this option on the menu. I work for a charity and have inherited a HP Compaq 6735s in which the HD has been wiped. I do not have any recovery disks. Simple question - how do I get to the Command Line? The Start up menu is just that, a menu. Can I break out to a command line?

I have an Acer Aspire 5720 series with a seagate momentus (5400.3 120GB).
I am pretty sure the HDD is stuffed. The notebook tries to start and gives me different error messages each time basically to contact the hardware manufacturer. The HDD also seems to make a click or clunk noice every so often as if it is having trouble reading.
Anyway main question. If I replace the HDD how do I get this notebook working again... no recovery CD's or anything?

I went through and cleaned out all the media and whatnots I wanted to save before a system reformat. So I popped in the XP install disc and restarted my ACER ASPIRE 1520.
I came to the blue XP install screen ... pressed F8 to agree like a good boy and then came to the hard drive partitions.
to my surprise not only did I have hard drive partitions C and D but also a hd partition called
" :- eisa tools "
I thought to myself "I do not remember seeing that before"
so after weighing my assumptions for a couple of mintues I thought "eh, i'll delete it and reinstall THEN deal with the issues if they pop up" ... part of me was still saying "dont do it, DONT DO IT"
so I did it ... deleted all 3 partitions and then created 2 new partitions. I then selected which partition I wanted to install XP on and came to the NTFS or FAT format screen ...
I selected NTFS and *blip* ... the computer shut off. So I turned it back on after checking the power adapter and making sure everything was secure, it was.
After the computer going *blip* and shutting off at various points in the course of the XP install blue screen (non further along than the NTFS format section) I then decided to go into BIOS.
So I restarted the computer , pressed F2 to get into bios and I did .......

The display on my laptop was working fine. I have reinstalled windows 8 64x on my v5-471. On startup the "acer" screen and windows symbol display perfectly, but once it boots into windows, the screen looks fuzzy, with everything ghosted/ duplicated. It works fine on an external monitor. I have installed the intel drivers manually from their website and tried uninstalling them and letting windows find the new driver itself, to no avail.
These are the drivers I have tried installing manually: [URL] .....
It is the same issue as seen in this video: [URL] .....

I have an aspire v3-571g that came pre installed with win 8. The hard drive just crashed without warning, and I somehow lost my recovery media. When I buy a new hard drive, do I need to buy a new copy of windows, or is there another way to get my copy back.?
Also, without access to my computer, is there any good way to figure out which d4ives are compatible with my system?

My original hard drive of Acer aspire 5738G crashed and I bought a new 1 TB WD hard drive. I tried to reinstall Windows 7 from recovery disk. All data copy and system restoration (from 3 restoration disks) completed successfully. But after the auto reboot, during “Setup is applying system settings” stage I encountered error message “Windows Setup could not configure Windows to run this computer’s hardware”. I tried reinstalling the OS multiple times but every time I am getting the same error. Before replacing my hard drive, I was using Windows 7 Home Premium OEM version and now I was trying to restore the same in my system.

I recently reinstalled windows 8.1 on my laptop as i had cloning problems with my new ssd (crucial mx100), reinstalling windows apparently solved the problem. i had problems with my display (brightness could not be adjusted) that was solved by installing intel's latest drivers using their app as device manager showed that it had the latest drivers. i only have one issue right now, the touch pad lost its multi-touch features and windows 8.1 gestures, is there anyway to fix this? i know it is probably a driver's problem but i can't really find them in device manager and if you can post the link of the drivers.
My laptop is acer V3-772G-747A8G75MAKK.

Background:
A few days ago i bought an Acer 7730 laptop with Windows Vista pre-installed and no disks. After initial hesitation i have decided to keep vista and not downgrade to XP. After all there will be more service packs and tweaking should speed it up lots anyway.
However, i really want to get rid of the three partitions on the hard drive. There is only one physical hard drive but there are three partitions; a hidden 10GB one (EISA configuration) which from what i have gathered is now obsolete, a C: partition 111.44GB and a D: partition 111.44GB. There is no need to split a drive into several partitions now that we have the NTFS file system (unless you are using multiple operating systems of course - but i am not) so this is really annoying me.
I have made the 2 recovery DVD and the 1 applications/drivers DVD. I have an old WinXP disk that i can use to format the laptop if required.
Question:
Using the recovery disks (which i'm assuming contain a copy of my bought OEM Vista that was pre-installed on the laptop), can i delete the partitions, format the hard drive and install Vista onto a single c: partition?
I've done this exact process before with WinXP hundreds of times but i'm not sure whether i can do the same for Vista with just the 3 DVD mentioned...
