I own a 5672 with the mobility x1400 card. I saw some x1800s online for sale. Is it possible for me to pop one in my laptop and make it work?
My current configuration is working, I'm just trying to up the frame rate a little.
Anybody else wondering why we haven't seen anything coming out with the 8800m Nvidia cards?
Alienware had their big product release 11/19/07 for their new laptops with the 8800m cards then they pulled the link from their website.
Dell, who usually has the newest stuff doesn't mention them.
The boutique vendors like Voodoo pc and Falcon-nw that pride themselves on offering the latest hardware don't offer them. No press reviews in the print.
I've seen one on line mini review of bench marks from a clevo type laptop with an 8800m video card and that is it.
I wonder if nvidia is having a harder time manufacturing the 8800 62 nM cards than they have admitted. It would explain why the standard 8800 video cards are hard to get as well
Tomorrow I will be ordering the Dell Studio XPS 17.3" for 1.5k.
It comes with EVERYTHING I've always wanted such as i7, 1tb HD, blu ray, 6g ram, etc.
My only quarrel is the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4670.
1) Can this card handle all current games on high/max?
2) Can I upgrade it in the future by swapping it with something better?

My E1705 originally came with the X1400. I upgraded the card to a 7900GS I purchased from a member here.
Well - It's time again to clean the HSF. I figured while I was at it, why not upgrade video card.
With my system still under warranty, I contacted Dell chat and stated that my X1400 was running very hot and artifacting (which it was before I switched to the 7900GS). They said that my video card was working too hard and I should upgrade - but also offered to send a replacement X1400.
The Tech stated that I should contact customer service and see if they would discount an upgraded card (subtract the price of the x1400 from a 512 card). He said I shouldn't have a problem.

View 4 Replies View Relatedlooking to use a computer for image/video editing. Due to 'budget constraints' hah, I am unable to afford a new laptop. I do, however have a Dell Latitude C840. Unfortunately, it has a couple of problems that I hope you, my reader, will be able to help me with. I am hoping for upgrade information. I will list each thing to make it easier to respond to. If you can, please make your suggestions detailed (for example, the exact name of something I can use to upgrade).
Things to upgrade:
1. The speed, as I said, it is very slow with both image and video editing. The computer has a Pentium 4m processor (2 ghz), and 512 mb of ram. Can either of these be upgraded?
2. I am constantly running out of space. I am currently outfitted with a 60 gb hard drive, but I have 33 gb of photos, and I am constantly having to delete photos after uploading them to the external. Is it possible to buy a bigger hard drive?
3. Now, I would be fine just working on my photos right off of my external hard drive, but the slow speed of the usb connection between my computer and the external makes this nearly impossible. I have Usb 1.1 (I think). Is it possible to upgrade my usb port to 2.0?
you've probably heard it told to you time and time and time again, that there is no way to upgrade a dedicated GPU on a notebook.
But as an Acer owner, you may very well be among the lucky few who CAN upgrade their GPU, since Acer has used the MXM standard on its notebooks for quite some time now.
(For a primer on what MXM is, go have a look at the best resource online for MXM.)
But if your system came with any Intel GMA, it cannot be upgraded. NO EXCEPTIONS.
This topic will list which notebooks are CONFIRMED to be MXM-capable, as well as what slot they have, and what cards they were originally sold with (consider those safe upgrades). Any successful new-card upgrades will be linked to alongside the model.
A later post will document all the MXM cards that Acer has issued - although it's possible to use cards from other vendors, it's safest and more likely to be compatible if you stick with an Acer issue.............................
I have a built in 1-5 card reader but the max size it will read is 2gb. Is there an update, or something so my laptop can read 4gb cards or more?

Just to explain how awesome this modded BIOS is: It enables a new INTEL-ONLY graphics setting in the BIOS for the TG models. This disables the ATI chip entirely, basically making the Switchable Graphics TG models act like the T models, which "fixes" the bug where both graphics chips are active after a Resume from Standby.
This gives 3810TG owners the promised battery life of 8+ hours. One caveat - it disables the HDMI port. For HDMI you have to use Switchable or ATI-ONLY modes.
I successfully upgrade an old laptop so that it will run well and not be too costly to upgrade either? So slow at present....

Purchased my 8920G-8332Q32Bn a few months back and at the time, the GeForce 9650 wasn't available so I settled for the 9500M GS. I find its performance very sluggish and read somewhere that these lappies come with "MXM-II" meaning the GPU's are swappable? Would anyone know of the costs associated and if it's even possible.
I don't know if there's something faulty with my GPU. I installed Microsoft FS9.1 with AF at 4x and AA at 8 and used to average 40fps. Now, under the same settings, same scenery, same amount of scenery, I barely make 15fps. I've tried resetting all settings in FS and the Nvidia Control panel but to no avail. I do notice that the laptop is much much hotter than before.
I know it's possible to upgrade the hard drive in my Acer 5920G, but I've got no idea what type of hard drive to look for, and which will be compatible etc.

But what I would like to know is, would I be able to install a new coppy of vista on to my new hdd then install empowering technology and then use the back up image that I have allready created on my external hdd so that I would'nt have to mess around with installing every single one of my programs, apps and games again? as it litteraly takes me about 2-3 days to get it the way I want it (recently took it back tio factory default btw and it was a nightmare lol), or is there a better way to go around it?

Are you assembling the drivers on Acer's website, or are you content to rely, at least initially, on Windows 7 drivers? For folks who will be upgrading to Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, what are you doing about the fact that there seem to be very few drivers and applications currently on Acer's support website?
I keep telling myself that Acer is going to release something, anything, in the next few days giving customers at least some guidance and help on how to get their Timelines fully compatible with Windows 7, but those are probably pipe dreams. View 14 Replies View RelatedIt started when I decided to upgrade the memory -- the manual said the laptop would take 2GB, so I bought 2 1GB modules, put them in, but the laptop would only read one of them, no matter how many ways I put it in. So, it was suggested I upgrade the BIOS. I've downloaded the latest, etc, but whenever I boot from the floppy I've got, and the A prompt comes up. Then what? I've been told to "execute the 1.BAT file", but not told how. I've tried typing 1.BAT.exe, to no avail, and was then told to just type in "1.BAT". This also just got me a "Bad command or file name".
