Apple :: 13" Mac Book Pro - Hard Drive And Warranty
Jun 15, 2009
I have a 13" Mac Book Pro (June 2009)
If I upgrade the hard drive on my own, will it void the notebook's one year warranty?
The sales people say yes... but the manual describes the procedure (why would it give directions for something that will void the warranty?)

i have a SR Macbook pro (late 2007) with OS X 10.4. i hooked it up with Western Digital MyBook Studio 1TB (external USB drive). the drive is correctly partitioned and formatted. using GUID and HFS+, quite often upon connecting, the drive start up, then spun down again imediately. strangely enough, the drive is still connected, the indicator light is still on, and the drive is still mounted under "disk utility", the volume however does not. if that makes sense. should i be worried? anyone else experience this problem? does this indicate that there is a problem with the drive? or a problem with mac os x? - i do have freeagent pro drive before, and it also have trouble with the drive jamming mid file transfer.

I have a mac book pro with Safari OS..some kind of Hack, secret virus/stroke key etc..and I need help in trying to fix it. I need to be contacted at the hotmail address, as I go to the library to get this uncompromised email. If you write, I will reply with problem in detail as much as I can explain-I am not too computer literate..I DO know who has done it. I guess that is a start..They say they are better than any APPLE hackers, techs, genius bar etc. and cannot be detected..

Seems I get headaches or at least eye strain from staring at my Mac Book Pros glossy screen all day.
I've always spent way to much time on my LapTops over the years & I know that in its self is not good for your eyes, But it seems that this glossy screen is making it much worse.
I dont remember dealing with this with the Mat ( non-glossy screens ) before.
Might this glossy screen be doing this? Should I get a film for it?

Also does a 7200 rpm hard drive improve speed and reduce battery life (i saw some ppl complaining) ? Just wondering whether to shop for a 5400 or 7200 rpm.

I've got some questions.
1) how much is the maximum capacity of the new battery? I'm getting 5500mAh per full charge... is this correct?
2) "if you intend to keep your laptop plugged for a long time, remove the battery" Ok. So how do I follow this rule if the battery is built-in? ahhahaha!
3) Apple says to recalibrate the battery once a month... but how often is it good to unplug? once a day? once a week?
4) at what percentage should I plug the laptop back in if i'm NOT recalibrating?

I just got my Mac Book Pro 15" a couple of days ago & do love it! ( except I'm still adapting from my Dell I've had for so many years. )
& I'd like to protect it from scratches & spills etc.
I've once seen a single one piece of silicone that covered everthing, but I cant find it now.
I'm assuming its not available for the newer models.
I dont know if I'm crazy about the Marware's stuff.

I dont think this one even has the keyboard cover.

My Macbook is coming in tomorrow, but I've already got a new hard drive that I'm planning to install on it. How do I install the OS onto the new drive? Do I just assemble the new drive in and put the CD that comes with the Macbook in and it'll do everything for me?

i recently bought a macbook pro 13in. I bought this to replace my lenovo t400. On my lenovo i have the st9160411as hard drive which is a 7200rpm drive. Do you think i can just swap the drives between both laptops, the mac HD to the lenovo and the lenovo HD (st9160411as) to the MBP? I am not sure what the compatability is.

i want to purchase a external hard drive for my macbook pro that i just purchased. But i do want it to be something like a "Western Digital My Passport" Series (as in a 2.5" or smaller so that it is very portable). I am also interested in getting it with a Firewire 800 port - which is where the problem i am having on finding what i want.

I have the stock 250gb Fujitsu MJA2250BH. It clicks a little and I can hear it working at times, but I suppose it's decent. I'm still going to upgrade to a faster one sometime.
What do you have? You happy with it? Does it make a lot of noise/vibration/etc.?

I was reading the switchers' guide and saw that upgrading the HD in my new (Apple refurb store, actually) 15" LED MBP 2.4ghz 8600gt model will void the warranty, and an Apple store tech must do it.
I'm cheap, illustrated well by me buying a refurb MBP for $1350 after waiting for a couple years to pounce on one. Being cheap, I was thinking of purchasing a 320gb HD for the MBP for like $65 off Newegg, and having the Apple store pop it in for me so my 1-year warranty will remain intact.
Does the Apple store charge for this service if they are installing an HD I am bringing in? If I purchase an upgrade HD from the Apple store themselves, will they provide the service free or at a discount?

I know it sounds Outlook-ish, but I think it'd be nice to be able to have my calendar and contacts show within Apple Mail -- that way, everything is right there in one window, and any changes I make are synced to Gmail / GCal, since that's the source of my calendar and contacts.
Have only found one reference to a since-defunct piece of software. Can this be done, preferably via freeware -- or even software options I missed?

It's a old version MacBook Pro 15.4" 2008 Edition, Core 2 Duo 2.5Ghz (i think) 2GB Ram, 250GB HDD
The problem I encountered was that one day when I was using my laptop I forgot to turn it off and then my laptop went to 'sleep' mode, when I came back and tried to turn on my laptop I could hear the sound but my display was black.
I thought it was just a minor problem so I just restarted my laptop but the problem consisted...
Unfortuately my warranty ran out but still I still put my laptop through the checkup in the official Apple customer center and they said that I needed to purchase a new part PCBA, MLB, 2.5 GHZ, REV2.

I had two questions about replacing the hard drive on the 1st generation (rev A) MacBook Air (with the 80GB hard drive):
1. I believe I read somewhere that it uses a not-so-common connector/interface. So, does anyone know where you can get the type of hard drive the rev. A MacBook Air takes?
2. Has anyone ever done this? Is it hard to get inside the case? Hard to swap out the drive?

I heard a very soft click maybe once every 20-30 seconds or so.
I'm running the 160gb 5400 rpm stock hard drive on the late 2009 uMBP.
Not sure if this is normal or not so if you fellow NBRers of the Mac subforum.

I have a 2.2GHz 15" Intel Core 2 Duo Macbook Pro with the factory 120GB hard drive. I want to upgrade the hard drive in the near future and have a couple questions:
1. Is there a size limit? (memory)
2. I hear that 7200RPM can be loud and/or cause vibration. Have any of you guys experienced this?
3. Is it SATA or ATA? What's the difference?
4. I noticed some are 16MB and some are 8MB. Does it really make a difference?
6. What's the best place to buy online?
5. These are some of the hard drives that I was looking at: [url]

can I get any external hard drive for my Macbook? Because I see ads for external hard drives for Macs, as if they're specially designed and made for Macs. Is that legit, or can I buy any one I want?
And while we're on the subject - any suggestions as to which one is the best (fastest, most reliable, etc.)?
I'm looking at getting a 1TB external.

I recently had some problems with my MBP...
Quote:
I have the 17 inch MacBook pro...just got it yesterday.
Right now, it will not boot passed the white screen with the apple logo.
I inserted the OSX CD and booted from the CD by holding C... now I guess I'm installing OSX onto the HD again to see what happens.
This problem occurred after my thumb drive was acting up. When I put in the thumb drive, and then start transferring files into the thumb drive... the little progress window would freeze up. I could not force quit, as you can't force quit "Finder" for whatever reason. So I had to do a restart by holding down the power key. Again, same thing happened and I had to do the power key reset...

what would you recommend as a good and reliable external hard drive that I could use with Time Machine.
What do you think of this:
Iomega eGo Portable 500 GB External hard drive - 800Mbps(FireWire800)/400Mbps(FireWire)/480Mbps(Hi-Sp.USB)
Also, from friends I know I've heard only complains about external hard drives - problems with reliability etc. Has anything changed in this regard in recently?
Lastly, what is your experience with Time Machine? How much can I trust it?

The screw that holds the bracket in place at the top of the compartment, I stripped it.
I used the correct screwdriver but the screw is too tight. I am going to use a drill with a tiny drill bit to see it that will spin it.
Does anyone know if hard ware stores sell screws as tiny as those? I want to replace the screw but can't seem to find it at the Rona.
