Apple :: Ibook G4 Freezing Up & Asking For Restarts
Mar 7, 2010
I'm having issues with my Ibook G4. I'll start it, it'll run fine for a few minutes, and then freeze up to where no matter what I do, nothing happens, and then I restart it only to have the same thing happen again. I'm thinking it's a software issue, cause when I ran the hardware test, no issues showed up.

We're looking to jump into Apple's and I thought this would be a good, inexpensive way to do it.
We basically surf, email, download photos and kids watch streamed videos.
Here it is:

I just replaced a failed hard drive on someone's iBook G4 and am now trying to install the operating system. I have the two CD's called "iBook G4 software install and restore." Using them, things go fine until it is time to "select a destination volume," where it doesn't show any volume to select. Running the apple hardware test off the cd shows that it detects the new hard drive, which is OK, and all the other hardware is OK too. So, what to check next? New hard drive is a seagate momentus 5400.3 ST9120822A.

My mbp is kind of freezing when it reads files. For example if i click on a folder i have to wait like 40 secs for it to open and when i click on a picure i have to wait 40 more secs for it to show the preview... It doesnt freez 100% but it reads everthing so slow... I have bootcamp and this also happens on windows.. but only when i try to read the mac partition from windows. What could this be?
I have macdrive installed on the windows side and it shows that the mac partition is corruped. Does this have anything to do with it?
I think it may be some virus or something.. is there any free antivirus for mac?

I have a 2.33Ghz 17" MBP (2006). All went smooth until the HDD became faulty. It was replaced within the warranty with a 250Gb Samsung HDD (to save time I bought a 250Gb samsung disk and I don't use the replacement disk). Since then my laptop regularly freezes. Sometimes it runs weeks - with sleep when I don't use it - sometimes after a few hours it just stops responding. It happens relatively often after recovering from screensaver. In the rest of the cases the CapsLock light can be swithced on/off for a while, but I can't use the computer
Till now I couldn't figure out any event that causes these stops.
I ran the hardware test (after booting from the original dvd) for 18-20 times consecutively in extended test mode, but it didn't find any problem. nowadays when I try to play World of Warcraft it may stop responding in 2 minutes.

I clearly haven't pinpointed the problem which is why I'm posting here. But since receiving the macbook pro unibody (17") a few weeks ago, all is fine and dandy, but sometimes there are lock ups and long load times.
Two examples are, when using sequential (yes I hate iphoto, I just want something like irkfanview for windows, simple and to the point) sometimes when I open a picture it takes like 10 seconds or more to load. Does this matter with how many pictures is within the folder?
And the biggest assumed culprit of all, firefox. It seems that firefox tends to freeze up for a while and then return to normal quite often. In some bad cases, my computer just stops responding. As in everything displays normally but I can't type anything or move my mouse.
I'm pretty sure I shouldn't have any ram issues, although I tried googling for a ram scanner but the closest thing I found was a crucial ram scanner that just recommends me to buy more ram (duh). So I'm guessing this is probably an osx and/or firefox problem.

First my Macbook DVD drive was broken, sent back to store and decided to upgrade to a Macbook Pro while this was possible. This MBP now seems to be having problems with the videocard: when I play a game, within minutes the laptop starts revving up the fans to the highest speed (might be normal?) and a few minutes after that, the game/laptop just freezes. This is with Hallife2, Left4Dead and others.
I'm losing ALL confidence in Apple. Is it normal for the fans to start blowing that quickly after starting a game? And is there a know issue with MBP's locking up after a few minutes (due to overheating?)

On my macbook I noted that when I just switch the airport ON, in order to search for some WIFI networks, the macbook completely freezes if I have the 3G usb already connected to internet.
This happens also if the 3G pen is only searching the 3G network (after being plugged) and then I switch the airport ON.
Why does this happen?
May all people having a 3G subscription try this?
I do not understand why this occurs. I will try on Monday in the Apple store but I would like to have your help also. For your information, I have a huawey e169 3G drive.

First of all i want to say i have a dell xps 1530, Vista.
Recentrly ive reinstalled vista and now i have something strange going on.
When i got to start (i dont use button) and click on hibernate, notebook save data and when he is about to shut down, it just starts all over, the data doesnt go loss, so it starts the same as i did leave it in hibernate.
The strange thing is that, when i after this try to shut down it restarts again, so the only thing left to do for me to push the button so it just manualy shuts down.
One more thing, when i start again, and i direcly try to hibernate or shut down then it does his job, everything happens as it should be.

I don't know if this is something I did or that came part of the bios in the m1710, but I have the A03 bios and I had just installed and uninstalled I8kfangui , then, after I had rebooted and tried to clean out as much as I could, I was pretty exhausted and laid my head on the keyboard. I noticed the fans stopped then came back on. I did this a couple times before figuring out that this fn + z combination somehow stops and restarts the fans, even at gaming temps. sooooo, I'm wondering, is this by chance screwing up my normal fan control, my temps, etc? Did I do something to cause this? Is it normal? or did I8kfangui do it, and why can't I get rid of it.
Another note, it doesn't work right when I boot up, only after windows is running for a couple minutes.

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-SZ483N with Windows Vista Business Edition SP1. For some reason, everytime i first boot up my laptop Vista will automatically restart with no error messages whatsoever.
I disabled the automatic restart option in vista and the same thing happens. However, once it's done the initial restart everything works normally and therefore i dont think it has anything to do with over-heating. I used to have windows xp pro sp3 and this did not happen

My Dell Inspiron 17 N7110 Keeps shutting itself down, recycling its system (I am sure I am using the wrong terminology). It will get to the dell logo screen and then go blank and restart itself. I spoke with someone at Techzilla who said that this has been happening to other people with this model. I removed the battery, tried hitting the F8, F11, F2 and F12 buttons. When I hit the F12 button the screen went to a black screen with a blinking curser in the upper right hand corner. This screen lasted about a second or two before it shuts down again and starts to recycle again. I was told that it's a software problem (that I downloaded a virus) but if others are having the same problem then I think it's a dell model issue not a software issue.

For some reason every time I shut down my pc it restarts itself like 5 seconds after it turns off. I looked it up and someone said try unplugging the Ethernet cable. So I did and when I unplug when I shut it down it doesn't restart itself but only when I leave the Ethernet cable in it. Why is that? Also down on my currently connected icon by the clock why does it show that i'm connected to two networks? I had xp pro before and it only showed me connected to one network but on this new computer it shows me connected to two networks. Network 2 and Network 3, is that normal?

I have an Inspiron 15R 5521 that intermittently restarts at various times. It doesn't seem to matter whether I am working in an MS Office Application or Firefox, IE, Chrome at least as far as noticing a pattern.
I have tried to run the diagnostic tests on the Dell Support site numerous times and keep getting the message "A problem has been detected, please try again" at the third step in the Diagnostic test process, 'Installing my Dell client'.

Recently, my laptop has been restarting when I hibernate my computer using either the on/off switch or the start button on the task bar.

I have had my Yoga 13 for a couple of months now (I bought it refurbished from the Lenovo Outlet). It is running Windows 8.1, with 4gb of ram.
Since I upgraded to Windows 8.1, which is practically the entire time that I have had the system, I have been getting low memory warnings and software crashes related to this. When getting these warnings and crashes I am usually running IE (maybe 4 - 5 tabs) and 2-3 pdfs in Adobe Reader. It only has 4gb of ram, but in my mind, this cannot overload the memory on this system!
In fact, I just got the low memory message now ("Your computer is low on memory. Save your files and close these programs: Internet Explorer") and I am only running IE (4 tabs) in the foreground. I don't think that this is an IE issue, because this problem is even worse, when I am using Chrome. That is what prompte me to switch to IE.
When I check in task manager right now, it says that I am using 81% of memory. IE is using 300mb (which seems very excessive) and there are other programs running in the background - none are using more than 50mb and most are using less than 20mb.
The other part of this problem is that when I am working normally (again with a few IE tabs open and a few pdfs open), the system randomly restarts itself, with no error message or anything. All of a sudden, the screen just shows the login screen and Windows starts as if nothing happened.

I have had this laptop for 7 months now, but since about 4 weeks ago when i click on shutdown i realised that it looked like it was shutting down... and 30 seconds later would fire up again. At first i thought it was me clicking the wrong button, but it has happened daily now. Only way to shut it down is my removing the power cable and then shutting down.
