Apple :: MacBook Pros Use Nvidia's Power-Saving Optimus Graphics Tech

Feb 19, 2010

Looks like our hunches about what's inside the next MacBook Pros are panning out: AppleInsider hears that Apple's got new MacBook Pros running that can switch between integrated and discrete graphics automagically, which exactly describes Nvidia's Optimus dual graphics tech.

If you remember, the unibody MacBooks from Oct. 2008 were the first to use Nvidia's GeForce 9400M, a combination chipset/integrated GPU that ridiculously outperformed Intel's own integrated graphics, and the Pro models at the time could switch between power-saving integrated and beefier discrete graphics, though it requires a logout.

Nvidia got cockblocked from making chipsets for Intel's latest-gen chips (read: Core i3, Core i5, Core i7), ruling out using Nvidia's better integrated graphics; Nvidia canned their chipset business entirely. So! Nvidia's Optimus tech works with Intel's crappier integrated graphics that are built onto the same die as the newer Core processors, but even more seamlessly than beforeóthe computer automatically switches between Intel's power-sipping integrated and Nvidia's monster discrete graphics, depending on what you're doing. No logouts required.

In the demo we saw on a Windows machine, the automatic part of the tech has some drawbacksónamely, it's entirely dependent on software to tell your computer which graphics card to run. But Apple's obviously worked pretty closely with Nvidia on graphics before, so it seems logical they're doing so here, too. Though I don't expect we'll know until the new MacBooks finally arrive, whenever that happens (hopefully, soon).

Dell Inspiron 14R :: While In Sleep Mode Goes Into Hibernation / Off Mode In About 2-3 Hours

Feb 14, 2013

I have a Inspiron 14R for about a year and half now.  This computer has done this since day one for some reason:

When I put the 14R in SLEEP mode, the computer remains in sleep mode for about 2-3 hours, then the computer shuts itself off, or goes into hibernation mode on it's own.  The computer has Windows 7 Premiuim.

I have the power saving modes all set too SLEEP, and none in hibernation in any of the selections.  I cannot for the life of me why this computer does this.  I have a Lenovo I bought about a year later using Windows 7 Premium with all the same settings in the POWER section, and while in sleep mode, it STAYS in SLEEP mode, no matter the length of time in that mode. Any setting I need to turn off, and where to find it?

Dell Inspiron 17r :: How To Use Balanced Power Saving On AC Connected

Apr 5, 2013

I was setting my power saving plans on my Inspiron 17r.

Is there any problem when I set "Maximum Performance" next to video, wifi, java script in all plans on AC connected mode?

I see that by default in some plans there is Balanced or low performance set next to those option even on AC connected. Why is that. From my understanding laptop is not running on battery while connected to AC.

Will it change anything if I set maximum performance on "Power Saving" plan when AC is connected? Will it affect my battery, charging time? I'm confused only because of those default settings.

Apple :: Unibody Macbook Battery And Charging Time

Jan 21, 2009

Two questions:

1) Is it normal for the battery to take several hours, i.e. 4+, to fully charge after being mostly depleted? For example, my battery says it's like 95% charged, yet has 40 minutes to go.

2) Is it normal for the battery time-left indicator to jump all over? When I run it on battery, the amount of time remaining constantly changes. It goes from 5 hours to 3 hours to 4 hours, etc, etc.

The first time I ever used the computer when I got it in December I charged it up fully, kept it plugged in for several hours, then let it completely die out overnight and fully charged it again.

Apple :: 15" Macbook Pro 2008 Unibody Battery

I had received my refurbished MBP last monday, and have been using it frequently since then. It takes on average 4-5 hours to charge it fully, which is ridiculous in my opinion. And the most I can get it to last is around 2:40 with lowest brightness, microsoft office 2008 open, bluetooth off and wifi on. Shouldn't I be getting more battery time?

Apple :: Late 2008 Unibody Macbook Pro 15" Battery

Aug 22, 2009

Does anyone know if it's possible to install the new mid-2009 Macbook Pro 15" battery in the late 2008 macbook pro 15"? I looked at the pictures and it seems to be an identical fit, just no screw to secure the battery but from what I see all it is is a simple change in battery./

Has anyone debated trying this? I would love the extra battery life and I don't see why we couldn't do this aside from maybe the charging being 80w compared to the 73w for the new battery...

Apple :: Unibody - Battery Life - Fans Were Not Spinning Up To Counter The Increase In Heat

Feb 5, 2009

my new 15" unibody.

I was having bad battery life (under 2 hours) And noticed my fans were not spinning up to counter the increase in heat.

I called Apple and they had me reset my PRAM. With that done the system worked fine for a day.

Currently my Unibody will not stay connected to any wireless networks. I have tried 2 of my own routers and a friends. It will not stya connected, either on AC or battery.

Next issue involves CPU hitting 95c before the fan go past 2k rpm. Try and and play wow and the system locks up when the CPU hits 98c and the fans are still at 2k. Tried reseting the PRAM again, no luck.

Lenovo X230 Series ThinkPad :: Battery Drains Quickly In Sleep Mode / Power Management Center Won't Run

Apr 15, 2009

I have my lenovo x230 laptop set to sleep when I close the lid. When I close the lid the "sleep" icon on the back of the screen lights up. But the batter will not last through the night on sleep mode. Within five hours or so, the battery is completely drained and I have to plug in and boot up the system. I've never seen such poor batter performance during sleep mode on any other laptop I've ever owned.

Another thread in this forum blames the USB port that allows you to charge mobile phones/etc. during low-power states and recommends disabling the "always power on" option fo this USB port in the Bios settings. At least my laptop still will not make it through the night in sleep mode.

At this point, it seems my ownly option is to use sleep mode only when the laptop is plugged in and hibernation mode when on batter power, which is disappointing. I've never had to worry about this in the past with other laptops. Perhaps/probably related is the fact that the lenovo ThinkVantage Power Manager (v. 7.16) hangs at the splash screen when I try to open it, so I've been trying to manage the power through the windows control panel power settings.

Apple :: Heat - Design - Unibody White Vs- Aluminum - Battery Life Vs- Video Card - Windows

Apr 14, 2010

1.I really didn't find much info on the (now not so) new white unibody Macbooks, expect some items for sale. And please, don't tell me that just buy the aluminum model for the extra $200, my question is strictly from an engineering point of view: heat. We all know aluminum Macbooks are quite hot, right? But how does the white unibody compares to the aluminum regarding heat issues?

2.What might be the reason that the whole bottom of the white unibody contcts the table beneath it, compared to the aluminum model, which has four rubber contact points on the four corners?

3.On the other thread I read a dedicated graphics card does not really add to battery consumption. Can you confirm that?

My main usage profile is office, web and seeing (HD, if available) Youtube videos. This one is rather a 15" vs. 13" Pro question, and half hypothetic. Let's say, all things are being equal on two models, the processor none the least, the only differences are one model has the integrated Nvidia, the other the integrated Intel plus discreet Nvidia combo, which one would serve me better, regarding performance and battery life? The discreet graphics would at least turn on when playing the HD videos?

4.Running native Windows (7 or XP) still suck on Macbooks, because of the drivers?

Dell :: Superclean Install9 Hours On A 6 Cell Battery

Mar 20, 2009

UPDATE: Cheat sheet to the superclean install posted
[url]

I am currently experimenting on seeing how far beyond the manufacturer's specifications I can take my machine. I'm keeping track of the steps I've taken, and will update this post when I feel I've reached the limits of what this machine is capable of doing, along with exact steps on how to reproduce my setup. Here's what I've currently achieved:

- A maximum of 9 hours of battery life on a 6 cell battery using 6.5 watts
- 6.5 hours of typical battery life while browsing using 8.5 watts
- No audio stuttering/crackling and perfectly green DPC latency
- Super quiet operation with no fan noise (fan stays off and doesn't spin)
- CPU temperatures around 33 degrees, rest of computer around 40 celcius
- Roughly 25 seconds to reboot to a working desktop (not just login screen)
- Only about 0.37 gigs of ram being used when idle

Machine specs are Dell Latitude E6500, Intel P8400 CPU, Intel X4500MHD Graphics, 1440x900 WXGA+ LED Screen, Corsair 128 Gigs SSD, 1.5 Gigs RAM, Dell 1397 Wireless, Dell 370 Bluetooth, DVD RW Drive, Webcam, Backlit Keyboard, 6 Cell Battery, Windows 7 Beta Build 7000.

HP/Compaq :: HP DM3T Battery Life Well Short Of 10 Hours

Dec 7, 2009

I have the following set-up on my DM3T that is getting 4.5-5 hours of battery life at a maximum with light use, ie: lowest screen brightness, wifi off, word processing. I am not running any background programs (anti-virus) or anything else that is resource intensive.

SU4100 1.3ghz 2MB L2 cache
4gb DDR3 ram
320gb 5400rpm HD

Why am I getting less than 5 hours of battery life on a unit with low specs that is supposed to get "up to" 10 hours?? Is this consistent with what everyone else is getting? Battery bar currently says that my battery's 'full lifetime' is 4:58. I just returned an Acer timeline that had the same processor and 3gb of ram instead of 4, and that thing was getting 8-10 hours easily.
