HP/Compaq :: HP DM3T Battery Life Well Short Of 10 Hours
Dec 7, 2009
I have the following set-up on my DM3T that is getting 4.5-5 hours of battery life at a maximum with light use, ie: lowest screen brightness, wifi off, word processing. I am not running any background programs (anti-virus) or anything else that is resource intensive.
SU4100 1.3ghz 2MB L2 cache
4gb DDR3 ram
320gb 5400rpm HD
Why am I getting less than 5 hours of battery life on a unit with low specs that is supposed to get "up to" 10 hours?? Is this consistent with what everyone else is getting? Battery bar currently says that my battery's 'full lifetime' is 4:58. I just returned an Acer timeline that had the same processor and 3gb of ram instead of 4, and that thing was getting 8-10 hours easily.

I know the usual drill, disable bluetooth, reduce brightness and etc.. but since i bought my mac (October) my battery life have decreased from 4:30 hours to about over 3 hours. Does anyone have anytips? Use black wallpapers? Use safari instead of firefox? We could make sticky thread for reference for future mac owners. i am using safari right now, and it seems to be consuming more energy than FF

Just got 2.5hrs usage on battery from my M6400 (QX9300, FX2700m, 16GB RAM, 500GB RAID 0 disk array). I was pleasantly suprised by this, as previously I've only managed 1.5hrs.
I was working on a virtual PC hosted by the M6400 - developing C++ code - (connected via RDP), included lots of builds and test runs etc to the (also hosted as a VPC on the M6400) sql server.

I bought Z500 last week and I am facing problem with the battery life. I charged the laptop for 12 hr for the first time. The battery discharges within 2 hr every time. I just browse internet or watch movies and the battery life is far below the expectation.
Â
There are two power plans - Balanced and Power saver and I do not see any difference in either. What is wrong with my laptop battery.

To start I should remind everyone that i'm not a mac user. I have never owned a mac or used OSX properly before today. As such, my opinions should be taken as coming from someone who has much knowledge and experience as far as PC's are concerned, but who is a total mac n00b.
First Impressions
When I first walked over to the Macbooks I was quite taken aback. The build quality is out of this world. In fact, I immediately walked over to the latest PC laptops to compare and immediately thought "manufacturing FAIL". Really, the Macbooks are italian sports cars, and PC's are 30 year old farm tractors to use the typical "car analogy".
The Macbook
I really only had any interest in the Macbook when I first went to the Apple stand, but came away with the intention of buying a MacBook Pro. Let me explain:
The MacBook's build quality is awesome. It's solid, no creaking plastic or flexable build, completely and utterly solid. Awesome.............

Following the excellent flipfire's undervolting guide and inspired by Silvr6's experience with undervolting his dv2, I decided to give it a try and...I was able to increase the battery lifetime from almost shameful 2h 25 minutes to 3h 30 minutes for mpeg 2 play, or even to 4h 20 minutes (light browsing and lots of reading). So, you get at least 25-30% more battery lifetime. This makes me like my dv2 a lot more!
Perhaps, it's the noted AMD's tendency to overvolt their CPUs, perhaps something else, but I was able to get the following 100% stable (in my case) voltages:
4.0x-0.6875 V
4.5x-0.7125 V
5.0x-0.7250 V
5.5x-0.7500 V
6.0x-0.7750 V
6.5x-0.8000 V
7.0x-0.8000 V (yes, it’s 0.8V again)
7.5x-0.8250 V
8.0x-8.5000 V
these voltages are stable for my particular CPU; yours might be slightly lower or higher. For example, Slvr6 was able to get a bit lower with 4x – 0.675 V. Read the undervolting guide!
But I hope that the table above will encourage you to try the undervolting (btw, unlike the overclocking it’s 100% safe), since the benefits for dv2 and AMD’s “neo” are so dramatic!...........

I'm thinking of the following configuration:
8730
DreamColor 1920x1200
QX9300 processor (quad core)
Quadro FX3700
Anyone have something similar (even if one component is off) and can tell me how long their unit lasts on battery?
I'm thinking of jumping on the 8730 deal that's going on and battery life is the main thing that would make me choose this over something else.
(I had an 8710 with T9600 processor and the Quadro FX3600 and it got 3.5 hours on power saving profile. Wondering if the QX9300 kills battery life, because a Dell M6400 with that in it gets only 1 hour 45 minutes.)

I am considering buying a 8530w with a intel x9100 and 7200rpm drive. What kind of battery life can expect from this with power save mode on doing web work or watching a blu-ray disc?
How much time do you get with your 8530w?
how do you like the 1900x1200 screen?

I am considering a blu ray laptop. HP's DV7 comes with a 128MB dedicated video at Best Buy. The DV7 at Walmart comes with 1GB of dedicated video. Will the 1GB video be that much worse than 128MB for battery life?
The BB Laptop with 128MB says 5hrs 15min, the WM laptop does not say.

i have purchased a new HP laptop DV5 1215 TX [url] [basically Intel c2d, 2.2ghz (t6600), nvidia 9600M GT] when on its 6cell battery , it only gives about 1 hr 40 mins, regardless of use, i.e. playing crysis or running internet. Is it acceptable for these specs or is there genuinely a problem with the battery?. in either case bluetooth , wifi was turned off, dvdrom was not in use as well.

Grabbed a display model of the DV4T-1147CL from Sams Club yesterday for 599.99 + tx.
Configured as:
14.1 high def brightview infinity display
4gb
64bit vista home sp1
320gb drive
dvd+/-R drive
6-cell battery
intel 5100 wifi wireless N/bluetooth
T5800
Geforce 9200M GS w/ 512 ddr2
Pretty nice overall, however the battery life is horrendous!
High performance power plan w/ default settings for the plan, with wireless/bluetooth on, web surfing, some youtube playback = 90 minutes!
balanced w/ same use as above =120 minutes
power saver w/ above: 145 minutes. (just shy of 2 1/2hr).
The unit was on display for about 1 1/2 month and did have the battery in it from the start, and was always plugged in. Did this damage the battery , or is it just normal for this high of battery consumption?

Got a new laptop a few days back (6730b), which is alot nicer than the nx7400 i had. When i got it, it came with vista business and a whole load of 'bloatware' i didnt need. so i did as i normally do and formatted the pc and re-installed vista (although XP was very tempting). I finally got round to getting everything how i want it but i've realised since formatting the battery life seems to be less than it used to be....
before the format, when the battery was full it would say i had 4hrs+ of battery life (i even remember seeing it say 5hrs once). Now it says 2hr 30 mins on 'HP optimized', 2hr 45 on power save!

I just got a new envy 15 the other day. There is a high pitched noise that is kind of annoying, but I'll be using the laptop at a cafe 90% of the time and probably won't notice it. I'm pretty happy with the laptop otherwise.
Does anybody have any tips on increasing the battery life? Other than screen brightness and lowering the "maximum processor state" in the power plan, are there any other settings i should be aware of? I've read posts claiming to have increased battery life of an i7 envy 15 to 4-5+ hours. I think I'll be pretty happy if I can squeeze 3+ hours on my i5...

Is this due just because of LED? Seems pretty crappy the 14" gets about 2 hours on a 6-cell battery and the 13" gets 6.
I wonder if they are planning on redoing the dv4 line to get LED displays if this is the reason?

These laptops are equipped with the CULV processors from Intel. However, the highest processor upgrade option, the Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor SP9300 (2.26GHz, 6M Cache) does not appear to be a CULV. According to Intel's website, it runs on 25 volts, rather than the 10 volts the other processors for this laptop run on. Considering that battery life is one of the primary reasons for me purchasing this laptop,I am concerned as to how that will effect battery life. Could someone shed some light on this issue?
Portability and battery life is a necessity. However, I am concerned that the Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor SU7300(1.3GHz,3M Cache) will not be enough processor to be used as my primary computer. I do not demand a lot from my computer; I typically run several tabs in Google Chrome and run Microsoft Word simultaneously. Occasionally, I also use websites like Hulu that would demand more of a processor. My main concern is this laptops ability to be my primary computer and its longevity due to the smaller processor.

I spent a couple hours reading through dozens of pages in the 3 separate HP Envy 15" Owner's Lounge threads and couldn't find a definite answer to the following questions--there was usually conflicting info.
In total there's over 1k pages, so despite considerable time spent perusing and searching perhaps I missed a definite answer somewhere in there. So hopefully, it's okay if I ask this outside of those threads for a conclusive answer:
1) Every review I've read mentioned the heat issue with the i7 system. Has anyone read an official review or gathered a consensus from users if the i5 version of the 15" model has lesser heat issues?
2) Does the i5 have graphics switching? And does the i7?
3) The i7 has very short battery life, which dissuades me from getting it. Is the i5 any better? What sort of usage are most i5 owners getting out of it?

I recently ordered a dm3t with pretty much all the upgrades during one of the sales.
Pretty much the same day I did that, the probook 4320s showed up on their website.
I'm trying to decide if I should return the dm3t and order one of the probooks. Right now the probook doesn't offer the discreet 512mb graphics card or 64 bit OS as choice but the customer support people say it will become available soon.
Basically I just dont know if it's worth the extra money for things like a better cpu, gpu, DVD, and fingerprint scanner.

I just got a HP DM3T and so far it is great, except for one thing. For some reason when on battery power the brightness seems to randomly darken (not turn off) and then it will lighten back up when I go to a different program or page. I am sure this is some sort of power saving feature but it is driving me crazy. Is there any way to disable this feature so when on battery the screen stays the same brightness? I apologize if this issue has been covered already, I must not be searching with the right terms. . .

I just purchased a 4810T laptop, formatted it, and loaded windows 7. Now on power saving Mode it says i only have 4 hours of battery left.. what happened to the selling point of 8 hours?
I'm thinking it might be because I don't have the empowering technology and power smart applications installed, but i can't install it anyway as it doesnt work on windows 7. So whats the problem here? my laptop, windows 7, or acer software?

My battery icon keeps on displaying that my battery is not depleting, which is weird since I've been using my laptop for several hours now and it is still at 100%. When I plug in, it registers that it is plugged in but says fully charged. Not sure if this is a magical always - full battery - or a problem?

UPDATE: Cheat sheet to the superclean install posted
[url]
I am currently experimenting on seeing how far beyond the manufacturer's specifications I can take my machine. I'm keeping track of the steps I've taken, and will update this post when I feel I've reached the limits of what this machine is capable of doing, along with exact steps on how to reproduce my setup. Here's what I've currently achieved:
- A maximum of 9 hours of battery life on a 6 cell battery using 6.5 watts
- 6.5 hours of typical battery life while browsing using 8.5 watts
- No audio stuttering/crackling and perfectly green DPC latency
- Super quiet operation with no fan noise (fan stays off and doesn't spin)
- CPU temperatures around 33 degrees, rest of computer around 40 celcius
- Roughly 25 seconds to reboot to a working desktop (not just login screen)
- Only about 0.37 gigs of ram being used when idle
Machine specs are Dell Latitude E6500, Intel P8400 CPU, Intel X4500MHD Graphics, 1440x900 WXGA+ LED Screen, Corsair 128 Gigs SSD, 1.5 Gigs RAM, Dell 1397 Wireless, Dell 370 Bluetooth, DVD RW Drive, Webcam, Backlit Keyboard, 6 Cell Battery, Windows 7 Beta Build 7000.

Prior to 2006, there was a distinct difference between Apple and the PC industry. Apple specialized in design, and still does, and the PC industry won over customers by wooing them with the best bargain available—features for the price charged—and almost always at the cost of a pedestrian design. In 2006, in an ambitious bid to gain market share, HP launched a massive and hugely successful marketing campaign known as, “The Computer Is Personal Again,” and redesigned all of its laptops with the extremely popular high-gloss Imprint finish. In less than 2 years, HP unseated Dell as the undisputed leader in PC shipments and maintains that lead today.
3 years later, HP is back again (perhaps) to change the game. Borrowing from design cues from Apple’s Macbook Pro line, HP launched the dm3 in late October and the tm2 earlier this month, with designs that feature a brushed aluminum finish. Is it successful? Read more to find out.
How this laptop was purchased
I had shopped for a while to look for a new computer to replace my aging dv6000t from back in the Windows XP days. My options were the HP Pavilion dm3t and the Sony VAIO CW. I visited a Best Buy to check out some of the laptops, and I can say that I was absolutely repulsed by the build quality of the Dells these days. They suck. Period. What really won me over from the Sony CW was the build quality of the dm3t. The aluminum finish really is outstanding. More on that later................

my friend is thinking about purchasing a new laptop for his mother. The HP DM3 laptops look to the best solution so far since they are both lightweight and have great battery life, something he thinks she'll appreciate. One thing i'm not sure about is their ability to run Adobe Photoshop CS4 smoothly.
I don't use Photoshop very often and when I do, it's on my laptop, which is pretty decent in terms of specifications. Will the program run fine on a laptop with a Intel CULV or AMD Neo processor and integrated graphics? Which leads me to my next question:
Which Pavilion laptop would you recommend? Are they both similar to each other than the processors?
