I have just received my upgrade discs for both my new Z620D laptops, followed the rather vague instuctions to the letter, clicked Upgrade. All went well until it asked for the licence key. Does the W7 upgrade licence key come with the discs or in an email? The original vista key does not work.

I just received Windows 7 Upgrade Disc from Dell, and it says "Windows Vista Business to Windows 7 Professional Upgrade" on the disc and COA also says "Win Vista Bus to Win 7 Pro UPG Fullfill."
I was curious if it is really impossible to do a clean install with upgrade disc as regular upgrade disc is. (At least I was told that it is impossible), but I did not want to upgrade my notebook to Windows 7 yet.
So, I gave it a try on VMWare. It installed just like regular Windows 7 disc in a empty HDD. It even took COA that came with the upgrade disc.
I did not try activating because it probably will fail if it uses SLIC to activate, or in worst case, it will get activated on my VM, and I will be unable to active it when I actually want to upgrade my notebook's OS

Has anyone done this on an Acer laptop? I recently bought a 5515 for my parents and after seeing all the bloatware that came on it I figured I'd do a clean OS install. I backed up the CD Key using the ABR utility and backed up all the drivers. I then started the new OS install and get all the way to "completing installation" and it sits there spinning for a good 20-30 mins before it freezes. I tried the 32 bit version first followed by the 64 bit and had no luck either try. I eventually reinstalled the factory settings using the recovery disc.

I recently got this laptop and wanted to upgrade to Windows 8.1 immediatly since it came with Windows 7. This was of course and option with the disc set that came with the laptop. Unfortunately i have encountered problems in the installation/recovery of Windows 8.1.
When the laptop is finished using the actual disc's (i say finished because it spits out disc 4 which is the last one) and is booting into the OS to do the last installing it "freezes" in the middle of "dowork.cmd". In the cmd window it tries to access a destination directory which it can't. Instead of writing it here, i'm just gonna link a picture of it:
I just don't understand why simple recovery discs would cause a failure... Googling the problem has only lead to this: URL....

I popped in the disc and selected Install. Well it starts installing and I go downstairs for about 15. When I come back up, the screen is off but the disc is still spinning. It's been going on like this for about 20 minutes now.
Is the screen suppose to go blank while installation occurs?
This is installing on a fresh new Macbook pro 13.

I just upgraded my MBP to 4GB from Crucial.
This is what my "about this mac" looks like now:
I forgot to check what it looked like prior to my upgrade. It's probably silly but I just want to make sure that everything matches up. Can someone with a factory default 2.2GHz MBP confirm that it also reads 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM?
The original RAM was Samsung. This one says Crucial on one side and has an M logo on the other side. Not sure what brand it is.

I just got done upgrading to 3.0 on the 2g iPhone via redsn0w. I have to say the sideways texting is a huge improvement. I want to copy/past every once in a while, but I think for the moment, it's not a huge improvement. Maybe that will be bigger down the road. The other thing I wanted was MMS, but I'm not sure it works with T-Mobile. I heard and I could be wrong, it's not working with AT&T at the moment. I'll have to have someone send me one latter today to see if it works. Other than those few things, I didn't see anything majorly different, but the texting is huge.

I have the stock 320 in my MBP. I almost ordered the Intel SSD that was like $1000...but then I came to my senses and told myself that was crazy.
However, in my old MBP I had the Hitachi 7k200 hard drive, and then was a solid drive. It was definitely faster.
I want to get the Seagate 500 gb 7200.4 drive. Do you guys think I would be able to notice a difference in overall speed compared to my 320?

I currently have a 320GB Hard Drive. I separate it into 2 separate partitions of 64GB and the rest on the other.
What will happen if I were to get a new HD and I want to transfer everything over?
Basically, I have MacOSX and I want to install W7 in a separate partition of about 64GB or maybe less.
I want to upgrade to 500GB HD, and keep all the info and data I already have on my current HD.
I'm guessing the best way to do this is to just reinstall mac OSX and W7 and transfer the files over? What about programs?

"how to upgrade the HDD" thread, so now I'll make a guide on how to upgrade RAM in the Aluminum MB and MBP's. Upgrading of the RAM is a bit more difficult, therefore it might be more helpful. You will be needing a Phillips 000 screwdriver, PC-8500 DDR3 1066MHz RAM, up to 4GB. I have yet to upgrade this yet, just waiting on the RAM from Newegg. So here is a step-by-step guide on how to replace you RAM in your Uni-body MB and MBP.
Step 1: You are going to turn your computer completely off to replace RAM.
Step 2: Make sure you have data backed up, just to be on the safe side. You don't want a bad ram module to lose some of your data. Some people don't do a backup before a ram upgrade, but I do.
Step 3: You are then going to flip the notebook over. Be sure to have a cloth or towel on the surface you're laying to notebook on, to prevent any scratches.
Step 4: No you are going to flip up the tab, just as you would do in changing the battery or HDD. After the tab has been flipped up, take the back battery cover off. The battery and HDD will be exposed at this point. Take the battery out.
Step 5: Now you are going to unscrew the 8 screws around the frame of the computer. There will be 4 short screws, 1 medium length screw, and 3 longer screws. Make sure you have a cup or dish of some-sort, so you don't loose your screws or get them mixed up...........

2. Are the SSD's apple sell with the MacBooks fast and worth the upgrade?
3. Do the MacBook 15 overheat or get hot often

I'm looking to upgrade the harddrive in my Santa Rosa Macbook Pro and am currently choosing b/w these two
Western Digital Scorpio Blue WD5000BEVT 500GB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache
[url]
Seagate Momentus 7200.3 ST9320421AS 320GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache
[url]
From what I have been able to gather the 500gb is quieter but has the slower revolution rate and less cache and obviously more space

My girlfriend has a Macbook 13' and recently she told me a problem with it, everytime she opens Word the system slows down, big time. It sounded like a Ram problem because I know Word is mem hog, plus all her other programs running. Anyway the Macbook comes with 512mb which is crap and can barely run much of anything, I looked it up and its fairly easy to install, so this is where you guys come in.
I need to find out how much Ram I can install (only 2? or up to 4? and can OSX even recognize 4?) and what Ram is compatiable (I thought Ram was universal, but I could be wrong)

have had my macbook pro for a year and a half...figure it's time to experiment. I want to upgrade to either a 7200 RPM drive OR a solid state drive AND add Vista Ultimate either through boot camp or another piece of software. So two questions:
1) Where can I get apple HD's
2) How hard is it to swap an HD in a 2008 model MBPRO
3) What software makes it easiest and WORKS the best with Vista?

I picked up an old iBook G4, specs are:
1.33Ghz PowerPC G4
1GB DDR SDRAM
ATI 32MB VRAM AGP Video Card (integrated I believe)
Seems to be loaded with all the goodies: Bluetooth, Firewire, USB, WiFi.
Not sure if it would be worth it to upgrade to 10.5 though, seems like it would only slow me down but with Unix/Macs I'm not so sure. Plus, it appears that 10.5.x is the last OS Update for the PowerPC crowd.

I recently got my macbook pro 13 and am loving every minute of it, so much better than windows for me personally.
The mac was running really fast to start with with internet pages loading immediately on firefox. However, yesterday i installed office for mac and now things are loading more slowly, sometimes a 1-3 second delay while it loads.
Does anyone know if this is just something random or is it caused by installing office for mac? If it is caused by office for mac, would upgrading from 2gb to 4gb make webpages load faster? And generally make things more snappy on the mac?
I only use the laptop for office documents, internet browsing, movie watching and listening to music...so no intense video editing or any thing like that.

I recently got a Macbook Aluminum (the 2.0 Ghz), and i'm really impressed with it. Well, i haven't really explore everything (first time using a Mac, so please be gentle, ).
One thing's for sure is that i absolutely love the trackpad. The swipe thingy is incredible.
Anyway, any advice on applications that I should be using? I mean, other than the ones stated here (a superb guide by Sam if i might add)
I plan to install Windows to do some programming (job requirements, visual studio 2008 bla bla bla). Should I upgrade my memory to 2 x 2gb? Currently considering between boot camp and vmware...
