View 8 Repliesi'm thinking of getting a mac book, either pro or regular, and i wanted to know if i could get the standard SATA hard drive and just upgrade to SSD later on? or do I have to get it with the notebook directly from apple when i buy it?
View 5 Replies View Relatedif anyone has installed Vista on the new MBP with SSD? Is it really fast?
View 4 Replies View Relatedif there are any recomendations for a solid state drive of at least 200 gb in size for my VGN-FW290. My current 5400 drive is super slow.
I currently have a very fast 250 gb solid state drive in my CTO VGN-Z590.
I am looking at for simular speed for my FW-290
E6400 model i'm looking has 64 gb solid state drive and optical drive in the media bay. I'm leaning toward SSD since it's future proof and fast. (it's used one so it's not that expensive)
However, I wonder if its possible to add 2nd hard drive in the system without taking optical drive out. Basically I want to keep SSD, 2nd hard drvie and optical drive within the system all the time.
can't wait to get home and rip into it..will post some comments tomorrow.
View 15 Replies View RelatedI have a brand new Inspiron 5523 Laptop which came with Windows 8 on it. After using it for a couple of weeks I absolutely hate this new OS and want to downgrade to Windows 7 Pro so it matches the OS on my desktop.I have run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor to check compatibility and the following state "We do not have compatibility information about this device"
Intel Centrino Wireless N 2230
Microsoft XPS Document Writer
Qualcomm Atheros AR8161 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller (INDIS 6.30)
Synaptics SMbus Driver
Question 1 - Is it going to be possible to get a Windows 7 Pro Compatible Driver for the above items?
Question 2 - Where can I find a step by step instruction guide to downgrading to Windows 7 Pro?
Question 3 - In addition to the SATA Hard Drive it also has a 32GB Solid State Drive which I understand is used for caching. Will the SSD also be compatible with Windows 7 and provide the same function automatically?
I recently purchased a Inspiron 17se and wanted to install a 256gb solid state drive as the main drive. I have created the Dell Recovery Disk set and swapped the drives. However, upon trying to recover the OS (Windows 8) the recovery disks/tool tells me the hard drive must be at least 916gb (size of the original disk) and cannot continue. The same thing happens with both drives installed (original drive in bay 1). It seems the recovery disk can't be used for the new drive. is the windows 8 standard downgrade-able with Dell to Windows 7?
View 14 Replies View RelatedI was about to pull the trigger on a Macbook Air however I was wondering if only the super drive will work with it or if I am able to buy a cheaper not apple brand one.
On a side note, I am new to OSX and is there any word program I could use to take notes in class before I bought a superdrive for Mac Office?
I was just wondering if anybody knew if you can take a optical drive out of a apple ibook and put it in a Macbook 13 mid 2007, and if it would work?
I ask because my Macbook 13 mid 2007 optical drive has died and I have a drive from a ibook just laying around, please any info on this or if you know of a ibook model that would work with the macbook 13.
I have a 2006 macbook pro 17". I want to upgrade the 120GB hard drive with a 500 GB drive. I normally use ghost on my PC to clone hard drives from laptops. Is there a Windows program that will allow my to clone an OSX drive from one hard drive to another?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have the stock 250gb Fujitsu MJA2250BH. It clicks a little and I can hear it working at times, but I suppose it's decent. I'm still going to upgrade to a faster one sometime.
What do you have? You happy with it? Does it make a lot of noise/vibration/etc.?
Can I boot off a USB thumb drive with a MacBook?
Linux is what's on the drive, but it's not wanting to boot.
I had two questions about replacing the hard drive on the 1st generation (rev A) MacBook Air (with the 80GB hard drive):
1. I believe I read somewhere that it uses a not-so-common connector/interface. So, does anyone know where you can get the type of hard drive the rev. A MacBook Air takes?
2. Has anyone ever done this? Is it hard to get inside the case? Hard to swap out the drive?
I have a 2.2GHz 15" Intel Core 2 Duo Macbook Pro with the factory 120GB hard drive. I want to upgrade the hard drive in the near future and have a couple questions:
1. Is there a size limit? (memory)
2. I hear that 7200RPM can be loud and/or cause vibration. Have any of you guys experienced this?
3. Is it SATA or ATA? What's the difference?
4. I noticed some are 16MB and some are 8MB. Does it really make a difference?
6. What's the best place to buy online?
5. These are some of the hard drives that I was looking at: [url]
original problem with the optical drive has been solved but it is now scratching my discs and making grinding noises.
View 10 Replies View Relatedcan I get any external hard drive for my Macbook? Because I see ads for external hard drives for Macs, as if they're specially designed and made for Macs. Is that legit, or can I buy any one I want?
And while we're on the subject - any suggestions as to which one is the best (fastest, most reliable, etc.)?
I'm looking at getting a 1TB external.
My new question is I bought a Used Macbook 13 mid 2007 and the last owner wiped the hard drive clean, and just so I can use the macbook I've been using a Live Linux cd, which is ok for now.. Anyway a friend gave me his set of os x 10.4.6 dvds so I can install a mac os but for some reason they won't install, it starts like it's going to install then a message pops up saying' this software can't be installed on this computer'' or something like that..
What can I do, the last owner of this macbook says he lost the CDs that came with it, when he was moving..
I just bought my first macbook ever. I got the 13.3" MBP with the 160gb 5400 rpm hard drive.
I upgraded the ram already from 2gb -> 4gb, and I was considering upgrading the hard drive. Size isn't too much of an issue for me because I keep most of my songs/movies/pictures on an external, but I was planning on upgrading it to something faster.
I was looking at the 320gb 7200rpm Scorpio Black, and was wondering if anyone has it installed in their unibody MBPs. I was worried about whether it would cause it to vibrate more/be noticeably louder/generate more heat.
I was also considering the seagate momentus equivalent.
I have a 17" Macbook Pro, just prior to the unibody. I currently have the 250gig 5400rpm drive. I want to upgrade to a 320gig 7200rpm drive.
1. Which model HD do you recommend?
2. If you don't screw anything up on install, will the Applecare warranty still be valid? I get conflicting answers on this.
3. I would love to keep my current hard drive OS/Apps intact. I'd like image my drive and put it on my new 320 drive. Any tips or documentation on how to do this? What is required? I do have an external firewire800 drive I can use to store the image.
I use my MacBook Pro for most everything except at home where I have a desktop system that's a few years old. The MacBook Pro should generally run rings around it except for disk performance and that's something that I'd like to fix. So I picked up a 1 TB MyBook and it's attached to the MacBook Pro right now but the MBP doesn't see the disk. I assume that I need to partition and format the drive.
The MacBook Pro currently has Mac OSX and Windows XP on the internal drive and they work just fine. What I'd like to do is to be able to boot Mac OSX, WinXP x64 and Win32 off of the 1 TB drive. I was hoping to partition it into three pieces and boot whichever OS I wanted at the time.
What I'd like to know is if it is possible to do this (3 OS on one external drive that the Mac could boot from) and how to go about setting this up. I would grab XP x64 and XP Win32 off another machine (that machine has three Windows licenses running) and move them to the MacBook Pro (with Microsoft's help if needed).
i have two macbooks connected to an airport extreme (i haven't actually got one yet), and i connect an external hard drive to the airport.
I want to share my external hard drive through my network. Just wondering how fast are the transfer speeds from the hard drive to the macbook using wireless? (ie copying a movie 700mb etc from the hard drive connected to the airport to my macbook using wireless)
I got my aluminum Macbook back in February 2009. When I first turned it on, I noticed the DVD sound make some noise every time I turn it on.
My girlfriend who uses the 13" Macbook Pro heard that noise and asked me what the heck that was..
I told her that I hear that noise every single time I turn on the laptop. She said that its not the case for her....
Is what I'm hearing normal? I do not know of anyone with my particular version of the Macbook!
To start I should remind everyone that i'm not a mac user. I have never owned a mac or used OSX properly before today. As such, my opinions should be taken as coming from someone who has much knowledge and experience as far as PC's are concerned, but who is a total mac n00b.
First Impressions
When I first walked over to the Macbooks I was quite taken aback. The build quality is out of this world. In fact, I immediately walked over to the latest PC laptops to compare and immediately thought "manufacturing FAIL". Really, the Macbooks are italian sports cars, and PC's are 30 year old farm tractors to use the typical "car analogy".
The Macbook
I really only had any interest in the Macbook when I first went to the Apple stand, but came away with the intention of buying a MacBook Pro. Let me explain:
The MacBook's build quality is awesome. It's solid, no creaking plastic or flexable build, completely and utterly solid. Awesome.............
I have been speculating over this prospect giving the direction that Apple took with the starting price of the 24" iMac (upgrade everything else and downgrade the VRAM).
I mean, this is something I would like to see, but I wonder if it is a smart move on Apple's part given how much they make off the current MBP's with the so called Apple Tax.
And, if they made this move, one has to wonder if it still would be considered a Pro.
This is going to be my very first Mac. I'm really excited about it, but I don't know which one I should go for... I narrowed it down to these two models. Which one should I go for and why?

I call Fedex this morning, they tell me Dell hasn't shipped anything yet. I call Dell, the lady tells me it was shipped and not to worry. I don't know who to believe..
So basically I can't track my package and know when its coming....
