Jan 10, 2009E6400 model i'm looking has 64 gb solid state drive and optical drive in the media bay. I'm leaning toward SSD since it's future proof and fast. (it's used one so it's not that expensive)
However, I wonder if its possible to add 2nd hard drive in the system without taking optical drive out. Basically I want to keep SSD, 2nd hard drvie and optical drive within the system all the time.

Question 3 - In addition to the SATA Hard Drive it also has a 32GB Solid State Drive which I understand is used for caching. Will the SSD also be compatible with Windows 7 and provide the same function automatically?

Feb 12, 2013I recently purchased a Inspiron 17se and wanted to install a 256gb solid state drive as the main drive. I have created the Dell Recovery Disk set and swapped the drives. However, upon trying to recover the OS (Windows 8) the recovery disks/tool tells me the hard drive must be at least 916gb (size of the original disk) and cannot continue.The same thing happens with both drives installed (original drive in bay 1). It seems the recovery disk can't be used for the new drive. is the windows 8 standard downgrade-able with Dell to Windows 7?

1. Speed (is it really faster? I have read were some systems can boot up in 10 seconds)
2. Battery - has anyone seen an increase in battery life?
3. Heat & Sound - I assume the system is nearly silent with an SSD. How about heat - does it run cooler?

Jul 11, 2009After an install of XP & windows 7 and use of a silly program to ramp the fans up; I've actually found that Vista is the best one for the job and actually ramps the fans up automatically, which means I can play games!
Finally then, it solves my problem, as partly why I got the macbook was to run windows, but was gutted when even if it was doing nothing, the heat coming off of it was really hot to touch.

Jan 2, 2009I am installing the oem version of vista home premium 64 bit on my brand new macbook pro. I use bootcamp assistant to create a 60gig partition, insert my vista cd to start the install, use advanced options to let vista convert format to ntfs.
I followed the steps/guide exactly and everything goes fine. The system goes through installation but when does its first reboot and comes back to the install screen it errors on the step that says completing installation. It remains on the completing installation step for a few minutes and then an error comes up the says "Windows cannot configure one or more system components. To install windows restart the computer and restart the installation."

Mar 25, 2009I have MacBook Pro (MBP) Unibody (late 2008) with 320GB 5400 RPM HDD. I am planning to upgrade the HDD to 320 GB 7200 RPM (Western Digital Scorpio Black WD3200BEKT 320GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s).
I plan to use TimeMachine to do the restore of OSX and WinClone to do the restore of WinXP in BootCamp. The steps will be:
1) Backup OSX and BootCamp
2) Put new HDD in
3) Boot-up from the Leopard CD and select TimeMachine to restore. At this point, OSX should be exactly the same as in the old HDD
4) In OSX, run WinClone and restore the BootCamp partition (see question below
The current HDD is partitioned as follow:
- OSX: 48.23GB used / 173.65GB free = 221.9 GB total
- Bootcamp: 46.6GB used / 29.3 GB free = 75.9GB total
My understanding are:
1) During the restore with TimeMachine, OSX will be smart enough to create 221.9GB of Mac OSX Extended partition.
[Q]: Is this true? Or the restore will just destroy the BootCamp partition, or even worse OSX cannot recognize the Bootcamp partition anymore because Windows is no longer there?
2) The remaining 75.9GB will be left alone by TimeMachine
3) Once OSX is restored to the 221.9 GB partition, I can run WinClone to restore the BootCamp partition using the 75.9GB
Is this correct? Or do I have to create a BootCamp partition AGAIN using OSX BootCamp Assistant, but instead of installing Windows, do a restore?
Apple :: Virtual Box - Run VMWare Or Parallels Off Of A Bootcamp Drive
Jun 27, 2009if you can run VMWare or Parallels off of a bootcamp drive, however I CAN'T afford to buy that. So instead I got Virtual Box. Now virtual Box wasn't in the stickies so I think this should be ok to discuss, if not please feel free to delete it Mods. Anyway, I can't figure out how to get the Virtual Box to load from my Bootcamp drive. Anyone else use this and know what to do? I dont want to have to delete that partition or create a new one just to use VB. I don't have a large enough Hard Drive.

May 23, 2009I Just popped in a new hardrive and all was well. Finally had enough space to have bootcamp and mac osx.
I installed osx no problem, then used bootcamp assistant and made a 80gig partition. Installed XP Pro but then and all was well. Had some problems with XP and needed to reinstall. Only this time when I erased the partition and re did it when I go to XP install I see one partition, and its 127 gig. Confused I put it on that partition and Mac OSX was gone, it would no longer boot.
So I reinstalled OSX and tried bootcamp assistant and made an 80gig partition. But once again when I get into XP install all I see is a a 127gig partition and it won't let me create a new partition.
Now I have a 300gig and disk utility sees that it is a 300gig, but says that it has 127 gig free, and 448MB used... Very odd... Also it will no longer let me partition or format the drives. This is bad.
I downloaded UBCD and it also will see that the HDD Size is 300gig, but again it is showing that 127gig free and only 448mb used. I really don't want to call apple on this.

Dec 21, 2009I've tried disk utility to create an image of it; it won't boot after this and once the bootcamp wizard has been run, still doesn't recognise that an os is on the partition.
Also tried Winclone; of which has to have exactly the same partition size as previous otherwise it doesn't work properly.
Can anyone suggest something like symantec ghost or osx equiv? Same for backing up osx partition; want something that I can just restore if needed. Used CCC but for some reason cannot get it to not keep all my previous files, so when restoring it also restores all deleted files too.

Jun 29, 2009I have been looking for a new computer and am looking at the mac book pro since it is 13 inches now something I like. I have a few questions though regarding bootcamp and Vmware.
So say I install windows xp via bootcamp. Can I still view files that I had on my mac partition or does apple not allow that to happen.
Second question:
Say I install xp via bootcamp. Can I run it with Vmware too or do i have to have a fresh install just for Vmware?
Lastly, what do you like more bootcamp, vmware or parallel?
I am currently a windows user ever since I started using computers so I do not have much knowledge with macs.

May 17, 2009I have a 32-Bit Vista Ultimate and I want to load it. Now when I partition my HDD do I need to partition it for lots of space, like 100 GB or do I need just enough to load Vista. And if I load Micrsoft Office and games will it need to be saved on the partitioned HDD or my regular one?
