Apple :: Add Some Memory
Mar 27, 2009I'm looking to add some memory - Any thoughts on the most cost efficient way to go about that? I'm going to start with my imac before I try it on my notebook.

View 4 RepliesI was buying a MacBook Pro tomorrow and I needed to know if I needed to select the 8GB of memory option for the 13.3 inch laptop? I will be running Windows 7 in VMWare as a virtual machine. I wanted to dedicate 3GB to the process to have it run as seamless as possible and therefore I would have 5GB to allocate to my OS X and that run as fast as possible as well. I know it is completely overkill, but I don't ever ever want to have to deal with a slowdown. I have had a top tier HP Elitebook with 4GB ram come down to its knees using just using windows media player playing music and I don't want to have to worry about that problem with this machine.
Applications always running at the same time:
-Firefox (Multiple Windows)
-Microsoft OneNote
-iTunes
-Windows 7
-Adobe Photoshop CS4
-AIM
-Yahoo Messenger
-MSN Messenger
-HD Movies running on VLC Player
-Sometimes running Maya/3ds Max
I am not too worried about the apple tax because I want to have the memory supported by apple care
I recently got a Macbook Aluminum (the 2.0 Ghz), and i'm really impressed with it. Well, i haven't really explore everything (first time using a Mac, so please be gentle, ).
One thing's for sure is that i absolutely love the trackpad. The swipe thingy is incredible.
Anyway, any advice on applications that I should be using? I mean, other than the ones stated here (a superb guide by Sam if i might add)
I plan to install Windows to do some programming (job requirements, visual studio 2008 bla bla bla). Should I upgrade my memory to 2 x 2gb? Currently considering between boot camp and vmware...
I've got a new iMac here fir my parents but would like to get an xtra 4 gigs of ram. Where's the best place to find this? Macmall, amazon...? And could someone direct me to the exact product page...
Also, is upgrading memory a simple task? I seem to remember reading that it is but would like your opinions on the matter. YouTube tutorials, etc.
Anyone know if it is possible to download Itunes movies or music onto a Flash USB device instead of having it downloaded directly onto the HDD or SSD in the Macbook its self?
Trying to save space on my SSD by downloading movies directly onto my USB device instead.
I upgraded my 2.4 Ghz MBP, to 4 gb ram from 2gb. I use crucial, but i think systems feels hot on the right side. and the base! is that normal?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am about to buy my first Mac. I have decided on the Aluminum 2.0ghz MacBook, 2GB, and 250GB HDD.
I have 2 questions:
1) Is there any need to upgrade the memory to 4GB? I have heard the OS works fine with the lower memory (as compared to most PCs). I dont really game on my computer, but do watch TV online some.
2) I start school in August, I have the money for the purchase, and would prefer to get it now......but is there any reason for me to wait until August? Just wondering if an insider has any idea of upcoming deals or upgrades expected in the near future.
I am planning to upgrade the RAM in my wife's 13" MBP (mid-2009). Currently it has 2GB. When I upgraded the HDD to 500GB, I didn't pay attention, but I vaguely remember seeing only one 2GB stick in there. Is that the case? If so, is it advised to buy a "matching" 2 GB stick or 2x2GB new ones?
Secondly, I have some Officemax gift cards to use before the end of this month, and I realized that they carry Crucial memory. Crucial website states the compatible memory for the mid-2009 13" MBP as "DDR3 PC3-8500 • CL=7 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR3-1066 • 204-pin SODIMM".
Would this work in the 13" MBP?

are there any sony memory stick adaptors for the 13" macbook pro? can I use a usb sony memory stick adaptor?
View 6 Replies View RelatedSo I'm finally sick of my wife's laptop and it's measly 512mb's of ram and would like to run bootcamp and some 'light' use of 3ds max it's clear a Ram upgrade is needed. My question for you apple gurus is can her system handle more than 2gb's of ram... i'm obviously challenging the max ram statement on the linked page I've heard of people installing more than the "limit" and the system running fine. I'd like to get 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM (PC2-5300) on two SO-DIMMs.
first of all, can 4gb's work in this laptop and secondly, does anyone recommend memory that's proven to work in this scenario?
Does anyone know how well the 9600GT with 512MB memory run Fallout 3? And their thoughts on trying to run Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3. Last when I run windows directly on the machine would I experience any performance lag.
View 5 Replies View RelatedA friend has a macbook pro 17" with an SATA 113GB usable drive, Intel 2GHz core duo drive (not core 2). I normally work on PCs- I know very little about macs other enough to find system specs.
Is there any limit to the storage capacity size of a notebook drive I can install? I typically use the Seagate Momentus 7200 drives on laptops.
Also are there any links or threads to instructions on replacing the drive? I found the one for how to do it on Sony Vaios on this site invaluable.
Taking the Mini apart is very easy. Slide the putty knife, as others describe, into either side of the Mini, and just bend outward. That process takes under 30 seconds, and don't be afraid to make little scratches on the white plastic underneath. It WILL happen a little bit, but it's so minor that nobody will notice, and... well.... it's underneath! So who cares?
Here was my model Mini with 1GB, out of the box, with only 128MB Geforce 9400m available.
Taking it apart is VERY easy. Just remove the lid as described above, remove the 3 antennas from their clips (NOT from the motherboard). That takes about 5 seconds. Then unscrew the 4 screws in the corners of the system, taking special note of their original location! Then all you need to do is prop up the DVD drive and get your hand in there and remove the single DIMM. I was pleasantly surprised to see a 1GB DIMM in there already, not 2x 512MB, so for those wanting to upgrade to 2GB and not 4GB DDR3, you just need one stick of 1GB! Nice one, Apple! (I, of course, assume that ALL 1GB Minis come like this...)..........................
I just got the new Macbook Pro and its awesome! I was a PC user earlier .However I was wondering whether the Macbook Pro 17 inch ( newest model) memory can be changed, I got the 4 GB RAM and want to upgrade to the 8 GB ram.
View 10 Replies View RelatedA friend just showed me his new Dell Vostro lappy. He has 4 GB of DDR2 800mhz memory on it when compared to my 4 GB of DDR2 667mhz memory on my XPS 1530
However, under his windows experience score - he gets 5.9 score for memory operations while I just get a 5.1. I can't believe that a couple of hundred mhz can result in such a drastic difference.
Is there something optimized for his system but not for mine?
I just purchased a used Elitebook 8540w with i7 quad core and four memory slots (I love it!).  It is running 64 bit Windows 7 Professional  It came with one 4gb memory module and I purchased an additional 4gb module to bring total RAM to 8gb. Â
Â
I have the HP document that shows for two 4gb memory modules, one should be in memory slot 1 and the other in memory slot 3 for correct functioning of dual channel memory. Â All set right?
Â
Not quite.  In the Elitebook 8540w, the primary memory slots under the keyboard are clearly labeled "1" and "2"  However, the expansion memory slots on the underside of the chassis are also clearly labeled "1" and "2"  Opps!  There is no "3" and there is no "4"  In which of the unfilled three slots do I install the second 4gb module for correct functioning of dual channel memory?
i having the Acer TravelMate 6493, originally it have 2GB of Memory. Recently, i have addin additional 2GB, mean that currently the system is having 4GB of Memory.
in the BIOS, showing the system is installed with 4GB of Memory, but when come into the windows, it show 4GB installed (2.90GB Usable) .....
I have HP 250 G3 notebook with 4gb RAM, and i need to add one more 4gb RAM module. How i can do it?

I have been hearing that the read/playback performance of the bluray drive on this laptop is terrible. Some say that it stutters all the way through an entire movie and it is very loud. Is this true? My second question is about the $375 charge for upgrading from 4GB RAM to 8GB RAM. Is it overpriced? Also, how easy is it to upgrade the RAM on the XPS 16?

I have a 2.5 year old E1705 notebook. I'm going to upgrade to W7 soon and in the process I thought I'd upgrade my memory from 2GB to 4GB.
I ran Dell's utility from their tech support page and it seems to be the case that the maximum my computer will support is 2GB! Is that possible?
In any case, I ran a diagnostic program (from Dell's utility) and it says my computer has two memory slots, and currently each slot on my computer has "Dual In-line Memory Module 1GB, 533, 128X64, 8K, 200", whatever that means.
I assume the 533 is memory speed (Hz) value. So according to Dell's utility, I am unable to increase the amount of RAM, but I could, for instance, "upgrade" to better chips (i.e., Dell sells DDR2 SDRAM Memory Speed: 800 MHz). Price would be $56.
I'm with Studio 1535 and strangely for me with:
2 GB Kingston
1 GB Sam sung
on Dell Web my notebook appears as only 2 GB Kingston.
But Kingston is very good ram mark.
Samsung is wide used by HP.
So I guess they both are very good!In my eyes Kingston is better but Sam sung is not bad too. (I doubt my samsung blank little overheat but I don't have issues with my ram till now, so...)
I was wondering if anyone had tried putting those G-Skill 4GB memory chips onto a Dell m1730 laptop, and if so, did they notice any major performance gains in doing so.
I use a few simulators at home, especially a Cisco sim called Dynamips which is both a CPU and memory hog, and I also use VMWARE a bit, so I thought I'd see if it's worth the upgrade to 8 GBs of RAM.
Any comments on stability, usefulness, experiences in Vista, etc. getting the system to recognize the full 8 GBs of RAM, etc.
I was wondering if anyone else here could help me out...I'm needing to buy some more memory for my xps m1210 that's a couple of years old...
what's the best way to go about doing this? should i buy it from Dell or Best Buy or new egg?
also, if anyone knows, is it worth my time to try and install it myself or should i just pay the 40 or whatever to geek squad?
If I get an m1730 with 2GB 667MHz ram memory and I want to upgrade to another 2GB of memory to make it 4GB, do I have to get 667MHz or I can get 800MHz?
