Apple :: Feedback From Current Gen MBP 15 & 17 Owners

I need to make a decision on a laptop in the next 24 hours....
I was waiting for the new HP Elitebook 8540w, but that is exorbitantly priced...
I was considering the new Lenovo W510, but the screen I require is out of stock for at least a month...
I wanted to wait for the next refresh of the MBP, but not even god knows when that is...
So considering the above, it appears my only option is to go with a current gen MBP and pray they refresh in the next 14 days.
So to the questions -
1. Have you had any quality issues with the current gen MBP models? Any overheating, under-performance issues?
2. If you got the top end 15, do you wish you would of just gone to the 17?
3. This will be a case where I have Parallels running non stop as there are some critical applications that must run under Windows, but the rest is under OSX (I'm not getting this laptop just to run Windows). Considering it seems OSX uses less memory, is 4GB sufficient to run IO intensive applications in Parallels?

I am selling my 160gb hitachi hdd that came with my alubook. thinking of upgrading to another hitachi drive, either the 320gb 5k500.b or 320gb 7k320 drive. what are your thoughts? i want performance but at the same time a very quiet and cool operating drive. anyway, how do i wipe my current hard disk clean before i sell it off? the next owner is also a mac user. is there any particular thing i need to do so he wont have problems installing os x? also, what do i do to load os x to my new hard disk? i know i need to run the installer from the dvd. do i need to format it first? if so, how? and..is there a way i can clone my current hard disk instead of going thru the hassle of reinstalling everything?

We're looking to jump into Apple's and I thought this would be a good, inexpensive way to do it.
We basically surf, email, download photos and kids watch streamed videos.

I heard a very soft click maybe once every 20-30 seconds or so.
I'm running the 160gb 5400 rpm stock hard drive on the late 2009 uMBP.
Not sure if this is normal or not so if you fellow NBRers of the Mac subforum.

feedback regarding the DV3z model on HP.com's website. I've seen a thread regarding the DV3 that best buy sells with an intel processor (their "blue series" or whatever) but haven't seen much regarding the AMD version HP sells direct.
Are there owners of it on here? If so what are your general impressions? A good buy? OK w/ battery, heat, noise, etc?

I'm almost down to my choice on laptop the Toshiba at bestbuy seems to be winning but today I seen an offer for the xps 16 that comes with a 2 year basic warranty which is in home repair after phone Diagnostics,Has anybody used this service?Do they come out right away? ....

Im starting a thread b/c many people seem to be experiencing some issues with their Latitude while docked.
Some of my problems (keep in mind I use TWO external displays):
1) Most prevalent is my fan issue. This might only apply to nVidia GPU users. It appears that two things are happening: a) the dock simply does not allow for proper heat dissipation.
This for me is a fact as my laptop runs both cooler and, utlizes much lower fan speeds while undocked. b) DELL may have set the fans to kick in at lower temps particularly with the nvidia gpu

I watched a movie on my laptop and connected my surround audio receiver to the audio out jack. At first,
I heard feedback whining from the speakers. Once I disconnected the AC adapter power cord and used only the battery did the whine go away. Do you guys notice the same behavior?
It looks like the AC adapter is not fully shielded.

I had replaced mobo on my dead SZ 4 series (don't ask why) and couldn't stop there since I was in the move thus consequently contemplated about possible upgrades. For now I settled for fan, WLAN card and CPU upgrade. If it works well, I might install SSD also.
1.Fan Modification
As you all proud SZ owners know, fan is very noisy on this machines so it made me think if there is any possible modification to reduce the noise. Since the BIOS is controlling it there is not much to do on the RPM part (in win at least, but more on that later) I settled for a fan and fan casing swap from SZ 4 to SZ 7 series.
In the photos you can see that fans, fan casings and heat-sinks are of different design. Besides design differences, voltage and the amperage are the same, 5V-300mA.
Only way was to install the fan and the casing of the SZ 7 heat-sink to my old one as one of the heat-sinks bolt bushings is off for a few millimeters.
There has to be some care exercised when prying off the fan casing, some heating was required from the aluminium side on three pins were casing is attached.
Not to be simple, the difference is also in the inlet hole. One on the SZ 7 heat-sink is bigger and off centre compared to SZ 4s. Had to do some filing there, to match it to the size of the new fan. Fan of SZ7 is not bigger, it is due to different design of the fan eye and its volutes...................

As an example my Z laptop has the P9500 C2D... but for arguments sake lets say I have a P8600 (same GHz as the new Z's CPU).
Current Z P8600:
Max TDP: 25 W
2 Cores @ 2400 MHz
Fully threaded application on both cores:
2.4Ghz * 4 Ops/Clock * 2 Cores = 19.2 GFLOP
Single threaded application (very common) on ONE core:
2.4Ghz * 4 Ops/Clock * 1 Cores = 9.6 GFLOPS
(GFLOPS is a great baseline on how fast is the CPU rating--giga floating point operations per second)

I know that Dell is known for always/usually having a lot of great coupon codes, but 25% does seem outstanding.
So for those of you who keep a closer eye on Dell than I do - is this degree of discount normal or unusual for Dell? In fact, is there any time of year that tends to be the "best" to get a Dell?
I'm probably not going to take advantage of this discount, but I'm still curious for future purposes. I'm trying to hold out on getting a new machine as long as possible - ideally, until Windows 7 comes preinstalled and perhaps until the new Intel chips/platforms come out...

So I was still confused about whether or not the SXPS Samsung SSDs would be able to accept the future firmware update (and thus be able to support TRIM). I contacted Dell's tech support via email and was told that the drives will support TRIM (though on 2 occasions he called it TRIP). I am not inspired by his lack of knowledge regarding the proper term and dont think that he is right. If I save the email would this help my case of getting a SSD from Dell in the future that does actually support TRIM?

I've found out there's newer drivers for my Studio laptop for webcam, wireless, etc.
I updated the BIOS and it went fine. My question is do I have to uninstall current driver before installing new one? On Dell web site, they only give general instructions and don't mention this.
If I install new driver over the old one, will I have 2 versions and can go back (in device manager) if the new driver doesn't work as well

I've been offered 800 pounds for my MacBook Pro that has a screen fault. It is 2.4ghz core 2 duo, 2GB Ram 200gb HDD and 256mb nVidia 8600 graphics card.
I am considering selling it for the above model that I can get from Comet for 599. It has a larger screen, larger hard drive, more ram and better graphics card and more dedicated graphics memory, it does have a slightly slower processor though.
I use Windows more than OSX these days anyway so it seems a good laptop to get with better specs than my MacBook pro. I just want to know off people who have this laptop what they think of it and how it performs.
Also if anyone can find any ACER documentation or something on this specific model so I can double check the screen resolution as I am worried it may only be 1330 x 768 or whatever it is but I am sure when I was at the store it had a sticker saying full HD 1080p meaning it would be 1920 x 1080 the same as my monitor. I hope this is the case as that is a big deal to me and I sometimes don't trust the product pages on websites selling things, Id prefer to see it on the Acer site but I can't find it. I can see the 6930 model listed but is a different model number.

Its been along time but my second m1710 died today but is still in warranty.
