Dell :: Anyone Try To Upgrade To An LED Backlight On A M170/i9300 Yet?
Feb 23, 2009
Alright all you techies out there, I've got a good one for you. Is it possible to upgrade the backlight on my i9300 to an LED? I'm curious if this is possible.
I have 2 Maglite flashlights that I've owned for years that I upgraded from the standard krypton bulbs to LEDs, they now shine much brighter and have much longer battery life than before.
I wonder if it's possible to do the same with my laptop? If possible this seems like a "no brainer" type upgrade for as we all know illuminating our screens has a direct impact with battery life.

I bought the 7800go gtx card from another person locally, and he also installed the video card for me. He followed the installation instructions from this website, and left after he installed the video drivers from Tweaksrus and got the resolution back to 1920 x 1200. After he left my place, I used my laptop with the usual applications, and I found the laptop to be much sluggish than before. When I tried to watch a movie in .rmvb format, there were often and obvious stuttering in the video playback. I was very disappointed as even 6800go vanilla (my original card) would play a simple movie smoothly, why would a much stronger card such as the 7800go gtx have any problems? Moreover, I rebooted my laptop multiple times and there were two times at bootup, an error said "no bootable device was found, press F1 to retry or F2 to go into setup". The other times it would boot up into Windows XP as normal. I left the laptop alone after getting so frustrated.
Thursday night: I tried using my laptop again, and the normal applications were still sluggish. I tried to watch some movie again in .rmvb again, and the stuttering video was unbearable. I then thought may be it was the video drivers' problem, and I uninstalled the tweaksrus video drivers the person installed for me. Then I installed the the mobile 7800/7900 drivers from Nvidia's website. It got even worse as the video playback stuttered every 3 seconds in a movie. Then when I tried to play Warcraft 3, the video also stuttered, which was very surprising as even 6800go vanilla would handle it smoothly in the past. I then tried a couple more drivers from Laptopvideo2go, and the sluggish performance was unbearable. I rebooted my machine for about 13 to 15 times and there were again two times showing the "no bootable device" error message at start up.
Some other things I noticed:
On some of the video drivers I installed, it showed the GPU temperature, and it was 70C when it was idle. Is that even normal? Seems too hot as people here said idling temp was around 40C to 50C.
Some questions that I have:
1. What is going on with the error "no bootable device"? I have never seen that before in the past 1 year and 9 months (since I have my i9300). I am sure it is related to this video card upgrade.
2. Do you have similar video stuttering issues when you are using the 7800go gtx card in i9300?
3. Do you think the card may have some overheating issues?
4. What video drivers am I supposed to use? Tweakrus has been down for a few days already. I am a very casual gamer so I pretty much just want movies to play smoothly and games running a little smoother and faster.
5. How is it possible that when go 7800 gtx supposed to be 2+ times stronger than go 6800 vanilla, would give such poor performance?

I've just picked up a second hand XPS170 with the 6800 Go Ultra stuffed inside. Long story short - the GPU died on me yesterday.
I've tried all number of things to bring it back, including removing and reseating the card itself. Blind flashed the rom back to stock (many thanks to zzpulp for the walkthrough!) but to no avail.
Getting no display at POST at all, even though it still boots through to XP eventually.
Question is, do I fork out for a replacement 6800 Go Ultra from DELL (about £220/$430) or do I take a serious look at the upgrade route, perhaps the M1710 path?

After upgrading to Windows 8.1, my XPS 13 keyboard backlight remains on 100% of the time. i can turn it off with the function key on the keyboard, Â but after a restart the problem repeats. Also, I have not found away to get it to automatically turn off after the keyboard has not been touched for some time (which is how the backlight is supposed to work).
Is there any fix for this? I've already installed all of the Windows 8.1 drivers from your website.

if my inspiron 9300 would support 3 or 4 gb of RAM. I know 32-bit windows limits the amount of RAM that is recognized but I'm asking if the actual motherboard and BIOS would recognized 3 or 4 gb of RAM installed.

When I try to boot my 9300 the HD spins and the LED lights flash like normal but after a few seconds the HD light shuts off and none of the fans startup. The power light stays on though.
This just happened to me one day as I was trying to power on my laptop. I've tried a new battery, new adapter, different ram, and even opened it up to make sure nothing was loose.

I've got an old i9300 that is basically unsellable. Apart from the low spec (see sig), it's got a battery that last 15 minutes on a full charge, broken speakers, no internal dvdrw drive and a cpu that runs unusually hot. I think I'd struggle to get $400 for it in its current condition - probably nearer $300 to $350.
Although it's an old machine it still works fine as a nice multimedia (music/movies) machine and for internet stuff so I thought about ways to convert the laptop into a sort of internet jukebox and this is what I came up with.
1st part: Dismantle the screen and flip it round so that when the laptop is closed the screen is on the outside of the machine. I've taken my i9300 apart lots of times before but I haven't checked to see if this is entirely possible. From the outside it looks like it should fit physically but I'm not sure about the length of the internal video cable. It probably could be extended if necessary though.
2nd part: Install OSX86 on it. This isn't because I especially like macs but it makes sense if I want to use iTunes as my media player (arguably works better on OSX than Windows). It also has a 'pretty' front end and is simple to use for non-technical users. There's evidence on the OSX86 website that it all works perfectly well on the i9300 with no driver issues so this part shouldn't be too difficult.
3rd part: Build some kind of unit that will allow me to mount the modded laptop vertically like an LCD tv or picture frame on the wall. This would also mask the cables that would be protruding from the underneath of the screen (previously the back of the laptop).
4th part: Look into wireless keyboards, mouse and remote controls so that the whole thing can be operated and switched on/off remotely.
And that's basically it. It's not the worlds most inventive mod (has it been suggested on here before? couldn't find it in a search) but it does make a very nice tablet/LCD tv style pc with a nice multimedia front end and remote control functionality.

i have seen and read about cooling dock stations for the i9300 that involve removing the PCMCIA slot insert. i am curious if my notebook would benefit from leaving this slot insert out even without a cooling dock? would the extra ventilation be of any value? i am currently uninterested in buying a cooling dock.

i9300 owner here. It's killing me that I can't get HD video streaming (Hulu, Youtube, Slingbox, etc...) to work smoothly on the 9300.
Any suggestions on how/if I can make this happen. It's killing me as I'm getting a new desktop that will stream HD just fine but I wanted to retire the 9300 to my media watching machine at work?
I just pin modded to 2.3ghz, have max memory (2gb), running windows 7, a 6800 go gpu ( with NBF MobileForce Se7en 190.38 drivers ), 60gb 5400 HD.

A little while ago I purchased a second hand X300 graphics card as the NVidia 6800 in mine went boom.
Now, the issue I have is is that I feel like this card is not being used to it's full potential.
By that I mean that when I am surfing the net or working in a database, even things like scrolling do not go 'smoothly' but rather 'jump'. I can only go up to 1600 x 1200 (32 bit) as well.
DVD's (or video in general) can no longer be played in full screen as they are too choppy .....

I was curious if my i9300 would run with the screen off it? I'm curious because it developed a single purple vertical line on it yesterday out of no where.
I read into this and it seems to be a common problem, I would like to take the screen off and run an external monitor. Can this be done? Any help would be great.

I'm curious if anyone knows of a higher capacity fan or fans for the gpu and cpu heatsinks in an I9300/xps2.. I got to wondering if there are same size fans which move more air, maybe they spin faster, higher RPMs.. Also, would cutting slots or a hole in the left side of the cpu/gpu heatsink fan help or harm that side..? Anyone played with this, or experimented? My 7800gtx GPU idles at near 60degrees when fan control is set to auto..

I was wondering whether there was anyway to plug two external monitors into the i9300 so that one was the 2nd display and the other replaced the main display on the i9300. I'd quite like to use my laptop as a desktop pc (have the lid closed and hidden away somewhere) but I suspect that the two outputs are mirror/cloned versions of each other - can anyone clarify? And if this is the case, are there any compatible nvidia cards that I can use that will allow me to use two separate external monitors at the same time?

My current config is in my sig.
I realy want the 8800 sli setup, but so expensive. I'll have to settle with 8700 sli .
Is this setup good for another 2-3 years?
Processor will probably be an T9300 with 4GB ram and vista ultimate.
RAID won't happen either because of budget limitations.
Is it possible to upgrade to 8800 sli later on?

I have an i9300 with a pinmodded 1.7- 2.26 processor, Nvidia 7800 GTX running stock clocks, and a 2 gb of aftermarket ram.
I have recently started to have the laptop crash on me while gaming. The computer boots fine, but after 15-20 minutes of playing Command and Conquer 3, i received a blue screen of death:
" A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer
Some more stuff about removing new hardware, trying new drivers, contacting system administrator, blah blah
Technical Information
***STOP: 0x0000008E (0xc00000005, 0x8054AB1A, 0xB62FC424, 0x00000000)
beginnging dump of physical memory
physical memory dump complete"
the computer restarted fine after that, but the computer crashed again after starting windows with that same blue screen error message, but with the the technical information different:
***STOP: 0x0000007F, (0x0000000D, 0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)
the computer booted again after that, but went through the full POST sequence.
Once the computer booted to windows normally, i ran ATI tool, and received the blue screen again roughly 17 minutes into the scan for artifacts test. No artifacts were detected at all. I have not yet run prime95 to test for processor stability
The computer booted fine after that, running through the normal shortened POST. It booted to windows fine and where im typing this post.
Some more information:
The 7800GTX was purchased used from a forum member. I previously overclocked the card to 440core and 1250 mem. I kept the overclock for a week or so, but noticed no differences when playing C&C 3 (the only game I play). I also applied ZALMAN's Super Thermal Grease to the card (reviews say it works as well as artic silver 5). I then dropped the clocks back to stock. That was roughly two weeks ago.
The 1.7-2.26 pinmod was not stable at stock voltages. The voltage was increased via pinmod, but I can't remember the exact amount. Two jumper wires were used in the volt mod however.
At idle, the processor reports a temperature of ~35 degrees. The 7800 idles around ~55. Underload, the processor jumps to around ~65 degrees. The 7800 was at 77 degrees when the computer crashed running ATItool.
I am currently using the XPS2 BIOS A05 and the laptop2go 92.91 nVidia drivers.

I'm wanting to paint the trim on my 9400 black with the Krylon Fusion paint which seems to be so popular here. I was wondering though which colour people have used to get the XPS effect - gloss black or satin black... or both?
how these come out on the different surfaces, i.e. the white and the grey,
Also on the XPS parts, is the black of the lcd bezel the same as on the trim round the palmrest?

I noticed a thin yellow line (about 1 pixel wide) on my LCD panel running the entire length vertically (I originally wrote horizontally) about 1 centimeter from the far right side.
The line is only noticeable against a colored background and is invisible against white.

It's been running fine for a long time now as in the Sig, but came home from Dinner last night and some wierd things. Tried to open Irfanview and it said it couldn't find the program.
Same with Easycleaner (a Reg etc cleaner). Also, my Software Firewall (Comodo) popped with 3 flags that basically told me it was not working and a re-installation might fix it.
So I rebooted and now everytime I come into windows (even in Safemode) if I select Start-Program Files (or Control Panel) the menu will lock up. Can still Alt-Tab-Del to see processes running, but thats it.
So I tried a restore point to last week, came to my desktop and nothing loaded. No explorer, menus, short cuts, etc at all. (can still alt-tab-del)

Is there a place that sells the blu-ray burner that dell puts into their laptops now?
Do you have to buy from Dell? Is this drive compatible with the inspiron 9300? I have modded the bios on my 9300 to the M170 bios. Also, will my video card handle this drive and blu-ray movies? I have a 7800 GTX.
Let me know what you guys think about this.

I recently purchased a M170 with 6800 Ultra off ebay and have been using it for the past week or so. During this time, I have noticed that the temps get quite high when running graphic intensive applications. I currently have an e1705 with a 7900GTX installed so I am familiar with the heat dissipated from a high end graphics card but the M170 seems to get very hot in comparison to my e1705. I am not sure what are considered high temps so I will just post my readings from I8kfan (these are the peak temps):
CPU: 95
GPU: 91
Mem: 77
Chipset: 80
Are these readings too high or about normal?

i'm having trouble with my XPS m170.
It has:
Pentium M 760 2Ghz
1Gb Ram
60Gb HDD
Geforce Go 7800GTX 256mb
17" WUXGA
Windows Media Center 2005
I was playing CS:S, and all of a sudden i was getting artifacts on the display. Than the computer froze up and i had to power the laptop down manually.
I was able to restart the computer in safe mode a couple times.
But wow when i try to restart the computer, i'm getting artifacts on the Dell Splash screen. And then it would freeze up.
What do you think the issue is? At first i was thinking the GPU is the problem. But now i'm beginning to think its the motherboards.
