Dell :: I9300 Won't Boot

Feb 15, 2009

When I try to boot my 9300 the HD spins and the LED lights flash like normal but after a few seconds the HD light shuts off and none of the fans startup. The power light stays on though.

This just happened to me one day as I was trying to power on my laptop. I've tried a new battery, new adapter, different ram, and even opened it up to make sure nothing was loose.

Dell :: I9300 Jukebox Mod

Apr 9, 2008

I've got an old i9300 that is basically unsellable. Apart from the low spec (see sig), it's got a battery that last 15 minutes on a full charge, broken speakers, no internal dvdrw drive and a cpu that runs unusually hot. I think I'd struggle to get $400 for it in its current condition - probably nearer $300 to $350.

Although it's an old machine it still works fine as a nice multimedia (music/movies) machine and for internet stuff so I thought about ways to convert the laptop into a sort of internet jukebox and this is what I came up with.

1st part: Dismantle the screen and flip it round so that when the laptop is closed the screen is on the outside of the machine. I've taken my i9300 apart lots of times before but I haven't checked to see if this is entirely possible. From the outside it looks like it should fit physically but I'm not sure about the length of the internal video cable. It probably could be extended if necessary though.

2nd part: Install OSX86 on it. This isn't because I especially like macs but it makes sense if I want to use iTunes as my media player (arguably works better on OSX than Windows). It also has a 'pretty' front end and is simple to use for non-technical users. There's evidence on the OSX86 website that it all works perfectly well on the i9300 with no driver issues so this part shouldn't be too difficult.

3rd part: Build some kind of unit that will allow me to mount the modded laptop vertically like an LCD tv or picture frame on the wall. This would also mask the cables that would be protruding from the underneath of the screen (previously the back of the laptop).

4th part: Look into wireless keyboards, mouse and remote controls so that the whole thing can be operated and switched on/off remotely.

And that's basically it. It's not the worlds most inventive mod (has it been suggested on here before? couldn't find it in a search) but it does make a very nice tablet/LCD tv style pc with a nice multimedia front end and remote control functionality.

Any suggestions on how/if I can make this happen. It's killing me as I'm getting a new desktop that will stream HD just fine but I wanted to retire the 9300 to my media watching machine at work?

I'd quite like to use my laptop as a desktop pc (have the lid closed and hidden away somewhere) but I suspect that the two outputs are mirror/cloned versions of each other - can anyone clarify? And if this is the case, are there any compatible nvidia cards that I can use that will allow me to use two separate external monitors at the same time?

Dell :: I9300 7800go Gtx Upgrade

Aug 10, 2007

I bought the 7800go gtx card from another person locally, and he also installed the video card for me. He followed the installation instructions from this website, and left after he installed the video drivers from Tweaksrus and got the resolution back to 1920 x 1200. After he left my place, I used my laptop with the usual applications, and I found the laptop to be much sluggish than before. When I tried to watch a movie in .rmvb format, there were often and obvious stuttering in the video playback. I was very disappointed as even 6800go vanilla (my original card) would play a simple movie smoothly, why would a much stronger card such as the 7800go gtx have any problems? Moreover, I rebooted my laptop multiple times and there were two times at bootup, an error said "no bootable device was found, press F1 to retry or F2 to go into setup". The other times it would boot up into Windows XP as normal. I left the laptop alone after getting so frustrated.

Thursday night: I tried using my laptop again, and the normal applications were still sluggish. I tried to watch some movie again in .rmvb again, and the stuttering video was unbearable. I then thought may be it was the video drivers' problem, and I uninstalled the tweaksrus video drivers the person installed for me. Then I installed the the mobile 7800/7900 drivers from Nvidia's website. It got even worse as the video playback stuttered every 3 seconds in a movie. Then when I tried to play Warcraft 3, the video also stuttered, which was very surprising as even 6800go vanilla would handle it smoothly in the past. I then tried a couple more drivers from Laptopvideo2go, and the sluggish performance was unbearable. I rebooted my machine for about 13 to 15 times and there were again two times showing the "no bootable device" error message at start up.

Some other things I noticed:

On some of the video drivers I installed, it showed the GPU temperature, and it was 70C when it was idle. Is that even normal? Seems too hot as people here said idling temp was around 40C to 50C.

Some questions that I have:

1. What is going on with the error "no bootable device"? I have never seen that before in the past 1 year and 9 months (since I have my i9300). I am sure it is related to this video card upgrade.
2. Do you have similar video stuttering issues when you are using the 7800go gtx card in i9300?
3. Do you think the card may have some overheating issues?
4. What video drivers am I supposed to use? Tweakrus has been down for a few days already. I am a very casual gamer so I pretty much just want movies to play smoothly and games running a little smoother and faster.
5. How is it possible that when go 7800 gtx supposed to be 2+ times stronger than go 6800 vanilla, would give such poor performance?

Dell :: I9300 Repeated System Crashes

Jul 8, 2007

I have an i9300 with a pinmodded 1.7- 2.26 processor, Nvidia 7800 GTX running stock clocks, and a 2 gb of aftermarket ram.

I have recently started to have the laptop crash on me while gaming. The computer boots fine, but after 15-20 minutes of playing Command and Conquer 3, i received a blue screen of death:

" A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer

Some more stuff about removing new hardware, trying new drivers, contacting system administrator, blah blah

Technical Information

***STOP: 0x0000008E (0xc00000005, 0x8054AB1A, 0xB62FC424, 0x00000000)

beginnging dump of physical memory
physical memory dump complete"

the computer restarted fine after that, but the computer crashed again after starting windows with that same blue screen error message, but with the the technical information different:

***STOP: 0x0000007F, (0x0000000D, 0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

the computer booted again after that, but went through the full POST sequence.

Once the computer booted to windows normally, i ran ATI tool, and received the blue screen again roughly 17 minutes into the scan for artifacts test. No artifacts were detected at all. I have not yet run prime95 to test for processor stability

The computer booted fine after that, running through the normal shortened POST. It booted to windows fine and where im typing this post.

Some more information:

The 7800GTX was purchased used from a forum member. I previously overclocked the card to 440core and 1250 mem. I kept the overclock for a week or so, but noticed no differences when playing C&C 3 (the only game I play). I also applied ZALMAN's Super Thermal Grease to the card (reviews say it works as well as artic silver 5). I then dropped the clocks back to stock. That was roughly two weeks ago.

The 1.7-2.26 pinmod was not stable at stock voltages. The voltage was increased via pinmod, but I can't remember the exact amount. Two jumper wires were used in the volt mod however.

At idle, the processor reports a temperature of ~35 degrees. The 7800 idles around ~55. Underload, the processor jumps to around ~65 degrees. The 7800 was at 77 degrees when the computer crashed running ATItool.

I am currently using the XPS2 BIOS A05 and the laptop2go 92.91 nVidia drivers.

Dell :: I9300 HD Unable To Open Applications

Dec 3, 2009

It's been running fine for a long time now as in the Sig, but came home from Dinner last night and some wierd things. Tried to open Irfanview and it said it couldn't find the program.

Same with Easycleaner (a Reg etc cleaner). Also, my Software Firewall (Comodo) popped with 3 flags that basically told me it was not working and a re-installation might fix it.

So I rebooted and now everytime I come into windows (even in Safemode) if I select Start-Program Files (or Control Panel) the menu will lock up. Can still Alt-Tab-Del to see processes running, but thats it.

So I tried a restore point to last week, came to my desktop and nothing loaded. No explorer, menus, short cuts, etc at all. (can still alt-tab-del)

Dell :: Replacing Motherboard I9300 Need The Lowdown On What To Expect

I'm going to be replacing the motherboard on my i9300 either tomorrow or the day after. I am then going to reinstall Windows so I have a healthy machine unhindered by impossible-to-remove Ad-Ware and low HD space. I'm wondering some things:

1) Is it better to re-install Windows first before replacing the motherboard?

2) Do I have to worry about BIOS/Driver compatibiilty problems after I replace to the new motherboard?

3) Can you please tell me of other factors that I should be aware of once I boot up my newly motherboarded' computer and how to deal with them?

4) How are you feeling today? I hope you're feeling fantastic!

I have the Dell Windows Re-installation disc and a good amount of personal data backed up in an external HD, I'm hoping that's all i need to accomplish bringing my computer up to snuff.

if anyone asks why I need a new motherboard, it's a faulty DC jack and the audio pins in the side are broken

Dell :: I9300 Gfx Card Dead - Gives A Black Screen After The Xp Spalsh Screen

Feb 25, 2009

I was browsing the internet a day ago and I was on a "COLLEGE" website so i know this is not due to a virus. At this time all of a suden my screen went black.

I powered the laptop off and turned it back on, The Dell logo appeared but the screen was fuzzy and had some "tearing" i dont really know what to call it but it doesnt look right. Kind of like an old VCR playing videos. The screen then whent black after the windows xp splash screen. The laptop still boots to windows but it does not display anything.

I booted into safe mode, everything functions correctly and the way it's supposed to. I then booted into VGA mode same thing everything functions and works the way it is supposed to. I also ran some virus scans just incase, nothing was found.

Whilist in safe mode i changed the resolution down to 800 x 600 and still no luck after booting in regular mode.

In VGA mode i tryed to change resolution and the screen displayed some blue fuzzy lines then whent black.

After this I booted back into safe mode and done severeral diffrent System Restores at diffrent dates. Still no luck

After going through all this I am assuming this is a GFX card problem. The laptop is about 3 years old and ive played games pretty hard on it ever since. The card has defenitly gone through some some stress. Can anyone confirm this?

I know that the i9300 sells for about 400 working, and i checked on ebay for a card that is a whopping 180 bucks. Id just assume buy a new laptop. Then sell the i9300 laptop for parts because everything else works fine. Or maybe buy the card swich it out and sell it for a price. Maybe there is a way to fix it i dont know. can anyone help?

Lastly, i thought i would add that when i check the bios the card is recognized and it displays all the correct info for the card. IS there a way to tell for 100% that the card is bad?
