And do you think the 5650 will be much faster than the 4670?

May 4, 2010I've decided to replace my dinosaur of a desktop with a laptop and after some searching, the Dell Studio 17 seems to be the best bang for buck.
So the question is which of the two to buy.

GPU: Radeon 5650 1gb

CPU: Intel i7 1.6ghz
GPU: Radeon 4670 1gb
Option 1 has the better GFX but worse CPU and option 2 vice versa.
Which one would end up with better game performance?
The main games I would expect to play are Bioshock 1 + 2, Mass effect 1 + 2, Starcraft 2.

Feb 20, 2010So at first I was confused but now I understand. First official, completely top to bottom support for all mobility cards (in the specified range of course) will come out with 10.3. What they didn't say that SOME mobility cards will be already supported with 10.2 and our " Dell (Studio XPS 16 Mobility Radeon HD 4670)" is on that list.
This was posted in another thread, but this wasn't the focus. They also have beta 10.3s...but I thought it was neat that official 10.2 WHQL certified drivers supported our card ....

Jan 11, 2010Turns out from the Dell Canada website that the new and (supposedly) improved studio xps 1647 will only sport the ATI's mobility 5730 which incidentally does not support gddr5- EVEN AS AN OEM OPTION! Many expected to see the mobility 5770 in the updated SXPS'S or at the very least, a 5750 WITH 1GB OF GDDR5. The 5730 is simply unacceptable! Dell charges TOP DOLLAR for these little puppies and now they are cutting corners on the GPU'S! Dell should be ashamed!This laptop does not even deserve the XPS moniker. The graphics are too weak. It should be a Studio Pro 1647.
AS WE ALL KNOW ALL OF ATI'S NEW MOBILE CARDS USE A RATHER LAME 128 BIT MEMORY INTERFACE AND AS SUCH, RESONABLE PERFORMANCE CAN ANLY BE ACHIEVED WITH THE USE OF GDDR5 ram which runs at about twice the speed of GDDR3.

Jul 5, 2013My current OS is Windows 8 Pro, Display driver: AMD 13-4_mobility_vista_win7_win8_64_dd_ccc_whql.exe1 If set Backlit brightness to level 2 for example, and after some time display turns off (turn off display after X minute) by itself, or restart the laptop; the Backlit brightness level remains same (level 2) but the actual Luminosity (Intensity of backlit) changes to something else.2 If I decrease the Backlit brightness (Fn + F4) to level 0 (the minimum level), and if I further press the key combination (Fn + F4) to decrease Backlit brightness, it will change the Backlit brightness, but the Backlit brightness should not be changing because it already reaches to the minimum level.This issue doesn't happen in Windows 7 with the same driver. this apart from reverting back to ATI v12.1 ?

Oct 13, 2009I've decided to try and play some games on it, only to find out I have some serious problems with it..
I've tried two different games, and the result is the same in both - the computer will hang about 1 minute after launching the game and only hard shutdown is possible (holding the power button)..
After doing a little analysis of the memory dump, I found out the graphics driver is the one to blame.................................

May 25, 2010Ok so after all the speculation it has finally happened. Head over to dell.co.in and customise an xps 16 and you can upgrade the graphics card to a 5650. Unfortunately this wasn't the complete redesign many of us were hoping for, but at least its something. Anyone know what the performance difference will be?

Sep 29, 2007I have a 5652 but no restore disks or restore partition. I cannot for the life of me get the tv card working, despite trying all the drivers from the acer website. I have no idea which card it is, apart from either a Liteon or Avermedia, but as I say, all the drivers from the acer web site come back with a code 10, device cannot start. I have been told that this is defo a driver problem, and once the correct one is installed, the card will work.
I have also changed Windows xp home to xp pro, and acer told me this could be a problem, and also don't have acer arcade, but have a couple of other apps that should be compatable. Is there any way of getting a hardware list from my lap top?

Apr 4, 2010i looked in the owners thread but cant find any answers...has anyone actually o/cd this laptops 5650 from 450mhz default up?
I tried rivatuner and there is no option for it and ati tray tools crashed my pc and i had to uninstall in safe mode.
Currently i cannot upgrade to the 10.3 catalyst drivers as they r not supported in vaio's(why?)
I think this is what the problem is but i was just wondering if anyone has had any success...this model has its 5650 factory underclocked to 450mhz and i know it is designed to go to 650mhz .

May 29, 2010I ordered a Sony Vaio E series laptop yesterday which has a ati 5650 underclocked to 450mhz. Now I've heard that its possible to overclock it using AMDs gpu clock tool back to the 650mhz it should be. Does this mean that the clock rate of the gpu will always be set at that value or will it reset to 450mhz on restart?
Is there any way to make sure that the gpu stays overclocked always even on restart of windows?

Dec 5, 2008I am attempting to OC my Mobility 7900 GS.
The stock settings on the clock speeds in ntune are reported at 375/507.
I recently updated to the 180.something drivers from nvidia, the latest ones available, hearing the these new drivers in combination with RivaTuner 2.20 can now OC this card without having to flash the BIOS.
After installing new drivers, my RivaTuner would not allow me to change the settings... I would change the 2 clock speeds on core and memory, then press apply, and ok - then they would just go back to the default settings immediately.

Since I don't have the throtlling problem (Thank god because of the new bios and 130 watt adapter)... I'm wondering what the best drivers are for the ATI Mobility graphics..
To be honest, I'm not getting good framerates at all..
I'm using the mobility drivers straight from ATI...
Now I see 3 options..
1. From dell
2. From ATI Striaght
3. Desktop ATI Modded
which one of these are the best drivers?

Jun 19, 2009As I'm sure those of you who installed it are aware, the latest Version of Quickset is now ran on startup as a service. Yay!
However, for me, when it opens it also opens the Windows Mobility Centre on startup. Does anyone know a way to keep QuickSet on startup, but stop the Mobility Centre popping up?

Mar 3, 2009Does anybody know the performance difference between Dell's 64 GB "Ultra-Performance" SSD and their 128 GB "Mobility" SSD?
In Canada, the 128 GB Mobility SSD is $589 extra, while the 64 GB Ultra-Performance SSD is $648 extra.
I would really like to know how much (if any) performance I would be sacrificing by going for the bigger (and cheaper) Mobility SSD.

But, I couldnt find any info on the new ATI 5000 series notebook GPU's in the Indian context. So
The DELL Studio series now comes with the HD 5470, which according to tha GPU benchmark isn't good enough for gaming. (The studio 17 here still carries the 4670, but, the better 5650 in UK) .

"The Video Card is not compatible with the Quad Core Processor selected, please update one of the selections."
I've tried google-ing this but nothing has turned up.
