Dell :: Cannot Boot From Cd To Upgrade M1730 From Vista 32 Bit To Win 7 64 Bit
Nov 9, 2009
I have vista ultimate 32 bit on my XPS M1730. I'm trying to upgrade to Windows 7 Pro 64 bit.
The cd will not run from the operating system so I tried to restart and boot from cd (I'm doing this part right for sure).
The laptop will just stay for about 40 sec trying to boot from dvd and then goes to windows vista

Firstly I apologize if this has been asked earlier, but I couldn't find an answer to my question. I have a 1530 on order. The OS will be Vista Premium x86. There are 2 things I need to do-
1. Upgrade the HD from a 5400 to a 7200, I have the HD.
2. Install Windows Vista Business - I have an original retail version, and I absolutely need this.
I have the Vista Business Retail DVD. What I want to do is have Windows and the dell partitions configured exactly as they came with the original computer, only with Vista Business, and on the new hard disk. I don't want to alter Media Direct, or delete the restoration partition. Everything should be the same except the Windows Versio

Today I will get my XPS M1730 (warranty replacement for my Gen2). I'll get it with Vista Home Premium 32bit and I have a few questions.
1. Is the installation by dell "bloated" with unnecessary stuff?
2. If it is, I plan to reinstall Vista with a retail Ultimate DVD my friend has bought. Can I use the serial on the backside of my computer for this installation to get a clean Home Premium installation?
3. Will I need to activate afterwards, like call MS or something...........

problem with my 8800 GTX in my XPS 1730...
Within Vista, both cards show up with a yellow exclamaton and a error code 43
I tried installing drivers off the dell website and then using Nvidia Reference drivers. No luck...
Re-Installed vista fresh- same problem...
Installed Windows 7 w/ Refernce Nvidia drivers - Same problem.
THEN..I installed Windows XP Pro SP3 with Dell website drivers and everything is working fine. Ran 3dmark, no crashes...
is this a software problem or hardware? Why would my 8800 work in XP but not Vista or Win 7? Has anyone heard of this problem? My 1730 is out of warranty so calling dell isnt an option.

With all the hand wringing folks have been doing about the lack of drivers for a clean install of Win7 I thought I'd jump in to the deep end of the pool with my FZ190 and investigate an alternative. My good friends Rajesh and Dr. Pratik have done clean installs of Win7 on FZ models, but I decided to take a different approach... the "dreaded" OS in place upgrade. Partly out of curiosity, I wanted to see if it would work, but mainly because I have a ton of software that would need to be reinstalled, if I did a clean install. That would mean days or weeks of inventorying every thing I have installed, digging up installation media and then installing all the stuff. I just don't have the spare time. So...
This past weekend I imaged my C: drive (all my data and I mean ALL my data is on D:, I am a fanatic about that). MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A BACKUP OF YOUR C: DRIVE BEFORE YOU TRY AN UPGRADE! I ran the Windows 7 Update adviser and it said I had some issues:
Quote:
NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GT - NVIDIA Not compatible The driver installed for this device is not compatible with Windows 7....................

So, this is the second time I've been unable to answer a technical question on my own, this makes me sad... But I'll live.
The problem is the following.
I've begun playing the Battlefield Bad Company 2 beta quite a bit and I've recently found that my lacking FPS is caused by my somewhat outdated CPU, which I really should have concluded earlier,
but spilled milk and all that. So I've been looking into upgrading and quite honestly, I have no idea what my options even are. I've been unable to find any compatibility related sites that could even as much as inform me what current CPUs are suited for my machine, so here I am, asking people far wiser, more clever, and most likely better looking than my self

suggestion on Dell's IdeaStorm requesting them to do a single 8800GTX upgrade module for the M1730. Dual 800GTXs are really unnecessary because SLI game support is spotty at best. (especially in Vista) In addition the Dual "card" module is going to be much more expensive than will be a single 8800GTX. I would a expect the single card module to be hundreds of dollars cheaper. I just can't see spending another $1000+ on a laptop that has already cost me over 4 grand. [url]

Knowing that you can upgrade the graphic card + ram for m1730, but I wonder if there is any possibility for you to upgrade the processor for m1730 or not. Right now,
I'm having intel 9500, but hope that I can move to extreme 9000.

I currently have an XPS M1730, which has the 8700m graphic cards running in SLI. I would like to upgrade to the 9800m's.
Has anyone made this upgrade to their M1730, or anyone have any insight into how stable it would run?

Currently running vista 32 and I want to upgrade to windows 7 64 but on the dell device driver's page there is no support for windows 7. Only XP and Vista drivers are listed.
Will the drivers automatically update through Windows 7 or do I try to find the drivers myself?

Relatively soon after a Windows Update (Vista), my screen blacked out and the resolution changed from 1920x1200 to something like 800x600. After restarting the notebook, everything seemed to be back to normal, except my graphics card (GeForce 8800M GTX x 2) wasn't working, and upon looking in the device manager, it said the device wasn't working (code 43).
So, I tried uninstalling drivers/reinstalling drivers, etc. and nothing seemed to work. And now something I've done has made the main VGA drivers or whatever not work, and all I see is a big black screen on startup (but the mouse icon is on the screen and can move around).

I couldn't find an actual thread about this so I figured I'd start my own that can be easily picked up by search engines assuming your good selves can add some good info to it
I took the plunge after finding a final stepping X9000 OEM chip on Ebay for 269£ and I'd like to upgrade from my T9300. I'm fairly used to working on open laptops and I replaced the CPU in my old Inspiron 8000 with no problems so I figured I should be able to handle this swap as well.
However, I have a few questions.
1. I read in the M1730 thread "Dell is offering the X9000 but like ifti was saying it should be that hard of an upgrade because it looks like u can do it without removing the motherboard
the only thing is this may void your warrenty ud have to check that"
Has anyone successfully switched the CPU on the M1730, and can they confirm that you don't need to remove the entire board and the screws are accessible from the top of the board to remove the CPU?
2. What can I use to clean the existing compound that I will have to remove before applying my own compound (Arctic Silver 5)
3. Any other advice before I break open my M1730?

I just got a nicely loaded E6500 from the Dell Outlet. It has XP installed but came with a Vista Business licence and I am just not sure whether to or if vista is an "upgrade" or not. I've read a bunch of reviews comparing the two systems but they were all done on Vista's release and did not account for the SP1 and other fixes, those reviews seemed to give Vista a slight edge but by no means was it overwhelming. So I was wondering what peoples opinion of Vista was now that its been on the market for a while and has had some fixes applied.
Brief specs on the laptop:
2.5ghz, 3m L2C, 1066FSB
2gb ram (1 dimm) have a second 2gb dimm on order.
250gb 7200rpm HD
Nvidia Quadro 256mb vid card.
my usage:
I am not a gamer. I do some limited video, Photoshop and audio arranging. For the most part it will be a general usage computer mainly using MS Office apps, web apps and multimedia playback.

Note- Vista has ability to manage and shrink partitions->Start->right click 'Computer"->manage->Disk Management->click drive (C)->shrink volume
If you have XP or need to partition a space bigger than Vista will allow, follow this walkthrough with MEPIS:
Step One
download Simply MEPIS 3.3 here:
http://iso.linuxquestions.org/mepis/2
Step Two..
(requires DVD/CD burner -/+ R/RW)
Burn it to CD/DVD as an ISO image
Vista's Default burner does not include ISO imaging software, It can be downloaded here:
32-bit version
64-bit version
Step Three..
Boot from the CD drive, put Linux CD in drive and boot. It will run Simply MEPIS from the CD, but it will not install
Step Four..
Sign in as: root, password: root
Step Five..
Click on "Run QTParted"- that will open a box showing your partitions. The main Windows partition is usually /dev/hda1
Step Six..
Right click on your Windows partition, and choose RESIZE
Step Seven...
In the box labeled FREE SIZE AFTER, type the size (in MB) that you want the new partition to be. That will create free space.
Step Eight..
Right click on the free space, click on create
Step Nine..
Select partition type (NTFS or FAT32), click OK
Step Ten..
Click on file(top left), then commit- changes will take effect
Step Eleven..
Click close, then click on the K in the lower left of screen and logout, restart computer
Step Twelve..
remove CD and it will boot to windows, check your partitions. Insert Vista OS to install on new partition
OR
For XP installation on new Partition ....

Wife has a Dell Inspirion E1505 that keep freezing on the Vista boot screen. You know the one with the 3 yellow bars that just run across the screen right before you see you login name.
Well it just freezes and never gets past that screen. I walked her through reinstalling Vista over the phone and it boots from the cd and then loads all the drivers off of it and then goes to the Vista boot screen again and freezes..
