So, this is the second time I've been unable to answer a technical question on my own, this makes me sad... But I'll live.
The problem is the following.
I've begun playing the Battlefield Bad Company 2 beta quite a bit and I've recently found that my lacking FPS is caused by my somewhat outdated CPU, which I really should have concluded earlier,
but spilled milk and all that. So I've been looking into upgrading and quite honestly, I have no idea what my options even are. I've been unable to find any compatibility related sites that could even as much as inform me what current CPUs are suited for my machine, so here I am, asking people far wiser, more clever, and most likely better looking than my self
I have my friend's laptop with Core2Duo T8300 processor and wanted to upgrade to X9000.
Can anyone suggest me how to do that with some links for the picture guided or video instructions? Also, what are other components needed for this upgrade? Infact,
suggestion on Dell's IdeaStorm requesting them to do a single 8800GTX upgrade module for the M1730. Dual 800GTXs are really unnecessary because SLI game support is spotty at best. (especially in Vista) In addition the Dual "card" module is going to be much more expensive than will be a single 8800GTX. I would a expect the single card module to be hundreds of dollars cheaper. I just can't see spending another $1000+ on a laptop that has already cost me over 4 grand. [url]
Im thinking about upgrading my processor in my M1730 from my 2.4 to somthing with a little more mustard.
I am concidering the X9000.... Will this work with my m1730.... also does 1730 have potential for 64 bit.... Im lost as I have been out of the loop on this machine for a while.
Knowing that you can upgrade the graphic card + ram for m1730, but I wonder if there is any possibility for you to upgrade the processor for m1730 or not. Right now,
I'm having intel 9500, but hope that I can move to extreme 9000.
Currently running vista 32 and I want to upgrade to windows 7 64 but on the dell device driver's page there is no support for windows 7. Only XP and Vista drivers are listed.
Will the drivers automatically update through Windows 7 or do I try to find the drivers myself?
I couldn't find an actual thread about this so I figured I'd start my own that can be easily picked up by search engines assuming your good selves can add some good info to it I took the plunge after finding a final stepping X9000 OEM chip on Ebay for 269£ and I'd like to upgrade from my T9300. I'm fairly used to working on open laptops and I replaced the CPU in my old Inspiron 8000 with no problems so I figured I should be able to handle this swap as well.
However, I have a few questions.
1. I read in the M1730 thread "Dell is offering the X9000 but like ifti was saying it should be that hard of an upgrade because it looks like u can do it without removing the motherboard
the only thing is this may void your warrenty ud have to check that" Has anyone successfully switched the CPU on the M1730, and can they confirm that you don't need to remove the entire board and the screws are accessible from the top of the board to remove the CPU?
2. What can I use to clean the existing compound that I will have to remove before applying my own compound (Arctic Silver 5)
If I bought m1730 with geforce 8800m can I upgrade it later to get the geforce 9800m? If yes, do I buy the video card and install it myself or I buy the card and dell technician will come to my house and install it for me?
I have a xps m1730 that is equiped with geforce 9800 sli already. I want to know that in case that I want to upgrade the video card, what card I can put in for this laptop.
I should be getting my upgrade (Pro 64) within the next week and was wondering which method is better. I obviously know that it will run a bit faster for the first month or so with clean install, however, my concern is with the activation of the dell free upgrade version. Will it simply be boot the free upgrade disk and install and it will be activated fine? Or, is there more to it? Also, say a year from now I wanted reformat/reinstall win 7... How would I go about doing that with the dell free upgrade DVD?
With all the hand wringing folks have been doing about the lack of drivers for a clean install of Win7 I thought I'd jump in to the deep end of the pool with my FZ190 and investigate an alternative. My good friends Rajesh and Dr. Pratik have done clean installs of Win7 on FZ models, but I decided to take a different approach... the "dreaded" OS in place upgrade. Partly out of curiosity, I wanted to see if it would work, but mainly because I have a ton of software that would need to be reinstalled, if I did a clean install. That would mean days or weeks of inventorying every thing I have installed, digging up installation media and then installing all the stuff. I just don't have the spare time. So...
This past weekend I imaged my C: drive (all my data and I mean ALL my data is on D:, I am a fanatic about that). MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A BACKUP OF YOUR C: DRIVE BEFORE YOU TRY AN UPGRADE! I ran the Windows 7 Update adviser and it said I had some issues:
Quote:
NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GT - NVIDIA Not compatible The driver installed for this device is not compatible with Windows 7....................
I have some issues with my video since I upgrade the nvidia drivers from the nvidia web site. I removed the drivers and I reinstalled the original ones with the same results.
Does the Windows drivers upgrade also upgrades the video firmware as well?
I'm installing x64 XP Pro on my system (check my sig) after using x86 XP pro for many odd years. I was hoping I could get some help cultivating all the x64 bit compatible drivers for my system because this is a large undertaking, and all my drivers I have backed up to flash drive are for my current 32-bit system, so this is overwhelming to me...... I was hoping I could just get some help from the community retrieving OEM drivers (not Dell drivers) for my system. I want everything up-to-date, including RAID matrix manager and chipset drivers....
i have 2 problems with my m1730, one the keyboard lights stopped working, is it driven by a driver or something or what? my 2nd problem is device manager is telling me i have an unknown pci device and is always asking me for driver software. windows has directed me to nvidia for the driver. i know it is the physx processor but the physx control panel says no physx processor installed.
I used to have an Inspiron 9400 which I modded into an M1710, which is in this photo forum. I eventually managed to get some funding and bought the M1730 about 4 months ago and love it. Heres a basic photo of my setup:
The Specs: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor T9300 - 2.5GHz, 6MB Cache, 800 MHz FSB

I was worried this would be a slow processor but it's great does all my photo work and web design work with ease, and it's great for games ! Fantastic machine, love the light up keyboard.
In the photo it's sitting on an akasa 17" notebook cooler to help keep the temps happy.
I'll try and take some more photos of it at some point.
I am looking for people's opinions on what is the best OS to run on a M1730. I guess the choices would be Vista 32 or 64, XP32 or 64. If you could vote, AND reply with your opinions,
My 1730 is not cooperating this morning. Been trying to figure out why Im having a BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) everytime I try to open anything. It even crashed during a system restore and also during a power off at the Windows is Shutting Down screen.
Things had been working great up until last night. I was reading something on a webpage when I got a pop up window on the page I was on, and when I clicked the window closed, I crashed to blue screen of death.
Haven't been able to do much since then. Not sure if its hardware or software related, but I do notice that my McAfee isn't running now and when I try to update it says 'Components Are Missing' and to reinstall.
Can't get far enough in a reinstall before I crash again, so thats getting me no where.
I was able to do a system restore to a day earlier, but the problem is still there.
I also have no way to network in safe mode due to only having wireless internet access.
If anyone has any suggestions on where to get help to find out what might be causing the problem. Please let me know. I can follow instruction if anyone can walk me through what I need to look for.
I am down to 1 GPU on my M1730, in the interest of replacing it , from the forum sticky these seem to be the options
XPS M1730 Nvidia 8700M (both single and SLI****) Nviida 8800M GTX SLI Nvidia 9800M GT SLI Nvidia 9800M GTX SLI
(I assumme this list is complete still . i.e. no 260's or 280's available)
Other than Dell or EBay are there any other sites , suppliers that people know of who might supply one of the above
DELL want 340 + Vat for a sli 8700m and there is every so often a 8800M for sale on ebay but they typically want approx 500 pounds for it (anyone had experience of buying one?)
I am dubious about the 8800 as evidence suggests it runs hot so would prefer a cheap 8700m or a warrentied 9800M
