Dell :: Replacing GPU In M1730
Jan 13, 2010
I am down to 1 GPU on my M1730, in the interest of replacing it , from the forum sticky these seem to be the options
XPS M1730
Nvidia 8700M (both single and SLI****)
Nviida 8800M GTX SLI
Nvidia 9800M GT SLI
Nvidia 9800M GTX SLI
(I assumme this list is complete still . i.e. no 260's or 280's available)
Other than Dell or EBay are there any other sites , suppliers that people know of who might supply one of the above
DELL want 340 + Vat for a sli 8700m and there is every so often a 8800M for sale on ebay but they typically want approx 500 pounds for it (anyone had experience of buying one?)
I am dubious about the 8800 as evidence suggests it runs hot so would prefer a cheap 8700m or a warrentied 9800M

Does anyone or have anyone had their left side speaker replaced with DYI. I need a new left side speaker cause mines blew up.
If I were to call dell and order a new one, is it going to be hard to replace or can someone share some pictures with instructions! By the way would the speaker need to include the LED lightings too?

I buy the SXPS 16 with a 4670 the minute it is released in Canada and configure it to as closely to my current config as possible.
When it comes in, I manually swap the HDDs from my current SXPS 16 to the new one.
Would this allow me to get around installing Windows and all my programs? Once I swap the HDDs and turn on the new laptop, will it boot up as if it was the old one, but with newer hardware?
And I'd just like to vent my frustration that I can't order the SXPS with the 4670 and a T9800/T9900 in Canada yet

I'm under the impression that the Studio XPS 1645 will be using a similar, if not identical, chassis to the 1640. Given that, how easy is it to replace the hard drive with a SSD?
I didn't bother with a SSD option on account of the price, but once the price comes down a bit I'm hoping to replace the drive and use the existing drive externally.
How much of a headache is this and what should I be aware of with regard to known SSD issues,

Well the worst happened and my trusted Dell M1710 powerhouse that I've had for several years was dropped into a tub of water. I've got the complete care warranty so I called Dell to get a replacement unit.
Well after waiting a little over a week Dell agreed to send me a replacement unit; however, since the Dell XPS M1710 is no longer in stock they're going to send me a Dell Studio XPS 16.
I was wondering if everyone here thought that was a fair trade or an upgrade?

One of my headphone jacks on my M1530 is broken and needs to be replaced. Are those part of a separate board that can be hooked into the motherboard without the need of any soldering? I'd like to get this issue fixed, and don't want to send it into dell depot for repair. So if it's just a board that needs to be replaced, I'd like to replace it myself. If so, what would the name of this board be? I haven't had much luck looking through the forum or online.

After two years of using my XPS1530, I received an error or reminder message that I need to replace my battery.
It's still working though, but not sure what is the side effect of not replacing the battery immediately.
Do I need to replace my battery if it's still holding more than an hour or so?

I have a M1530, with the Dell 1505 Wireless N card installed.
To say the least, it is probably the worst card I have ever seen, getting no more than 6Mb/s on internal transfers (basically wireless G speeds) even though connecting at 130Mb/s.
I have a Dlink Extreme N DIR-655 router and it is pretty good, so I know it isn't that.
Looking at PCMIA cards on the internet, I suddenly realized that there is no expansion port on this system (or I am just stupid and can't see it), so I have to go with an internal card.
Is there anything I should be looking for when getting the new card? Are they easy to install?

I just got my hands a Studio 15 with great specs at the cheap, but with a pretty badly scratched up LCD lid. Has anyone attempted replacing the lid? Is it hard? I've opened up and replaced a processor, keyboard, fingerprint reader, ram, and hard drive before, but never an LCD cover. I'm kinda worried about the power button and wifi catcher, and I'm worrying I may not put the screen back the right way. This is supposed to be for my cousin, but I can't give it this badly scratched up.

I've got a Dell M1210 with an Intel T2500 (Yonah). It is showing its age, but I love the computer. Possible to upgrade the CPU on this, even if it voids whatever warranty I might have left? If so, what are the limitations?

I got a new Dell Studio 1558 a week or so back. Ever since I got it, I feel a constant vibration to the left of the touchpad.
After doing some research and asking some questions, apparently the Seagate 7200 RPMs have this issue. I confirmed it was the HD by putting the HD to sleep and the vibration would stop.
The best solution to me seems to replace the Seagate with a WD 5400 RPM HD. I have been looking at their Scorpio Blue for this:
http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/p...4&sku=A2436199
Will it work with the 1558? And, how do I go about setting up the laptop after replacing the HD?
I don't have any important documents that need to be transferred, but I am guessing I will have to use the Dell DVDs to setup Windows?
Thanks

So I've decided to upgrade from the 5400RPM WD HDD that came with my M1530 to either of the two:
Seagate Momentus 7200RPM 320GB 16MB Cache
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148336
WD Black Scorpio 7200RPM 320GB 16MB Cache
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136280
From what I've researched, the Seagate HDD is faster and consumes less power, but I've always been a WD fan and have had multiple reliable products from them. I was wondering if anyone had their own perspective on the HDDs that they upgraded on their M1530.

I'm just about to pull my dead 7950 GTX and send it off for repair ... they say they found the problem with this card failing and have a unique fix so we'll see. They are on Ebay if intersted.
Anyhow, I would like to replace all the thermal pads with a good thermal compound ... I was looking at IC7 synthetic diamond.
I am more than capable just never done this with my XPS M1710 so I need a guide. Question is, can all of the thermal pads be removed and replaced with IC7 or is the 1/32" gap between the memory and heatsink too much? I have read that you can fill this gap with pure copper shims but haven't found any details.

My computer has the Intel Pentium T2080 processor. When I talked to Dell, they said that it couldn't be replaced but I noticed that it comes out of its standard PGA478 slot easily.
I would hate to spend the money for a new processor without knowing that it will work, so my question is will a core 2 work? If not, would a Pentium from the T2000 series such as the T2130 (the T2080's closest relative) work?

The speakers in the studio 15 are pretty bad, worse than any other laptop I've ever used (worse than my cell-phone)... and I've never even used the Dell audio drivers which are supposed to be even worse. I've picked up a set of Logitech V20 speakers which are great, but it would be nice to upgrade the stock speakers.
I've started doing some digging ... the speakers are part number Dell part D954D made by Veco (http://www.veco.com.tw/all-index.htm) which makes a lot of small speakers and custom notebook mounts .....

I currently have an Inspiron B120 (15.4" body) that has a 14.1" screen that I'd like to replace with a 15.4" WUXGA screen. Will there be any compatibility issues? Other than buying a 15.4" bezel, is there anything else that would be needed?

So I'll be looking to pick up a new laptop within the next 2-5 months. I've had my eye on the xps 13 and m1330. I'm not sure which one would be a better deal for me.
Personally, I like the way the m1330 looks. Its also cheaper (esp since there are so many on ebay). However, from what I'm seeing is that it has outdated hardware, esp when put next to the xps 13. It still has a 8400MGS... which was available when I got my Vostro 2 years ago

My Inspiron e1705 laptop would not boot. Turns out it is a bad graphics card. Dell no longer has the graphics card in stock to ship a new one to me, so they are sending me a whole new laptop. The support guy said all of the components will be the same or better.
Anyone have any idea what I should expect to get? Will it be a new laptop or refurbished? I really liked the laptop I have now, and wish I did not have to replace it, but if I truly get something better, then I guess it is ok.
I guess I should have asked Dell this, but does anyone also know if my warranty (which has 1.5 years out of 4 left) will still be good on the new laptop?

I have a high end speced Inspiron 9400:
2.13 core 2 duo, 2gig ram, 100gig 7200 rpm hd, 1920x1600 true life screen, 7800go gfx which I purchased in June 2006. I am in the UK so this cost me £1100 from the Dell outlet.
During December 2007 it has had 4 service calls where the motherboard, graphics card, and lcd have been changed 4 times with the same fault occurring (lines on lcd).
Dell have kindly agreed at my request to swap the laptop for a new 9400, but as the 9400 is no longer in production Dell said they will give me a similar spec 1720 instead, which was nice of them and I agreed. Here is the spec for the 1720:
2.2gig cpu, 2gig ram, 160 5400rpm hd, 8600 gfx, 1920x1600 lcd.
All seemed fine but slower hd which I can live with (just about).
I then started doing some research and discovered the 8600 is slower than the 7800 I had? and the laptop has no DVI port! I used to connect the 9400 to my external montior and sometimes my HD TV using the DVI and will miss it dearly on the 1720.
Would it be unreasonable for me to ask for a higher spec machine over the 1720?

My laptop was in a car accident and the bottom chassis cracked open, it still works but long story short I'm getting a replacement. I was scared I would get one of the new 17" models with the POS 8600 card but to my relief my approval went throuh today, I just verified it and its an identically speced M1710 to my 9400.

I have been experiencing overheating problems on my Dell Inspiron 1525.
So after dealing with the support@Dell , they are sending down a technician to replace the motherboard and the heatsink
Now, will I need to reinstall my OS ( Windows XP ) after the replacement of motherboard? Will there be driver incompatibility issues?
Or can I continue using the system like before , after the replacement without having to worry about the above? ....

Depending on whether Dell can fix my M1530 with a motherboard replacement, I'm thinking of asking that they replace it with a Latitude E6500.
My father has this machine, and he seems pretty happy with it (aside from a few random crashes due to the way the IT Tech at his company configured the poor thing - the OS is a real mess).1) Are there any outstanding issues with the E6500 currently? Which is the preferred wireless card?
2) Does the Quadro video card have the same overheating issues as my 8600M in my M1530? I don't really game too much (all I'd be playing would be Half-Life based games) so I could get away with the X4500HD if I wanted to, but I'd prefer a dedicated graphics card (and I'd be having a screen which is 1920x1200).
