Dell :: Is Replacing My Dead E1705 Laptop

Feb 20, 2009

My Inspiron e1705 laptop would not boot. Turns out it is a bad graphics card. Dell no longer has the graphics card in stock to ship a new one to me, so they are sending me a whole new laptop. The support guy said all of the components will be the same or better.

Anyone have any idea what I should expect to get? Will it be a new laptop or refurbished? I really liked the laptop I have now, and wish I did not have to replace it, but if I truly get something better, then I guess it is ok.

I guess I should have asked Dell this, but does anyone also know if my warranty (which has 1.5 years out of 4 left) will still be good on the new laptop?

Dell :: Are Replacing My 9400 (e1705) With A 1720

Jan 25, 2008

I have a high end speced Inspiron 9400:

2.13 core 2 duo, 2gig ram, 100gig 7200 rpm hd, 1920x1600 true life screen, 7800go gfx which I purchased in June 2006. I am in the UK so this cost me £1100 from the Dell outlet.

During December 2007 it has had 4 service calls where the motherboard, graphics card, and lcd have been changed 4 times with the same fault occurring (lines on lcd).

Dell have kindly agreed at my request to swap the laptop for a new 9400, but as the 9400 is no longer in production Dell said they will give me a similar spec 1720 instead, which was nice of them and I agreed. Here is the spec for the 1720:

2.2gig cpu, 2gig ram, 160 5400rpm hd, 8600 gfx, 1920x1600 lcd.

All seemed fine but slower hd which I can live with (just about).

I then started doing some research and discovered the 8600 is slower than the 7800 I had? and the laptop has no DVI port! I used to connect the 9400 to my external montior and sometimes my HD TV using the DVI and will miss it dearly on the 1720.

Would it be unreasonable for me to ask for a higher spec machine over the 1720?

Dell :: Dead Graphics E1705 Said They Have Fix?

Aug 23, 2009

I have twins and bought two E1705 about two years ago and have been very pleased with them. I had one start the graphics problems (will not boot to windows and has the vertical lines at POST) you have all heard about and after changing the motherboard twice and graphics three times within about six weeks Dell suggested a change out to a XPS 1640, 15 days later it showed up (brand new and no problems).
One week after we received the 1640 my other son's computer is doing the same thing. I asked Dell if we could skip the change outs and go with the 1640 but they did not go for that. I will be shipping the E1705 back to them this time instead of the technician coming to my home. My question is that Dell has a fix now that they did not have a month ago.
Anyone have any ideas what they think they will be doing? They can not change to a ATI 1400 to run cooler because that card stinks. They could change that the fans run all the time but that seems silly. I am hoping they change me to one with two pipes instead of one but I do not know if they will modify the case like some have done to add the 7950 cards. Anyone else had Dell do a repair in warranty in the last few weeks so I know what i am looking at? We really like the E1705 but need something that is reliable.

Dell :: 7900GS Dead- E1705

Oct 26, 2007

I woke up from my nap today to see my 1 year old E1705 with the blue screen of death, except this time there were verticle lines all over the place like there was a video card problem.

So I reboot and It cant get into windows, and the lines come back. It starts to load vista then goes to the blue screen saying I have a memory/parity error. Next I try safemode and it works fine. No lines, no memory errors, no blue screens.

The first thing that came to mind is my overclocked 7900GS. Right now I am in the process of setting it back to the stock clocks. I feel like maybe I fried my beloved card with the slight overclock Ive had on it for the past year. Maybe Im right, maybe Im wrong.

If this doesnt work, what the heck do I do? Video card? Memory? I dont want to have to call Dell.

Dell :: Dead 7900 Gs In My E1705

Dec 8, 2008

I have a dell inspiron e1705 with a nvidia geforce go 7900 gs gpu installed. I was playing call of duty 4 on saturday and just after 5 mins of game play blue lines go across the screen and the screen goes black. The audio was still playing. I manually shut down the comp and restarted. When the dell screen came up after restarting orange and blue lines were visible. I could see the Microsoft loading bar but after that disappeared the screen went black and I could not log into windows. I downloaded the latest driver from nvidia, installed it, and restarted, but the same thing happened, Microsoft loading bar and then black screen. After about a minute of the black screen, a blue screen pops and says windows is shutting down form a hardware error to prevent damage and it also says something about a failure of the display driver.

Anyway, heres all the things I did so far to try to fix my problem;
-did a system restore to 2 days ago which didn't solve the problem.
-ran a memory diagnostics test and passed..
-ran a scan disk, no problems.
-uninstalled the video card and reinstalled with the latest driver which still did nothing.

Dell :: Dead Video Card - E1705

Feb 25, 2008

Alright, as you can see in my sig, I am the "lucky" owner of a GeForce 7800. I bought my E1705 RIGHT before the Core Duo 2 and 7900 GS wave, but I haven't had any real problems (besides the annoying overheating of the 7800, never caused a crash, just low FPS sometimes during gaming).

Well I went to check my laptop this morning, and after the Windows loading screen (during the Welcome screen) it would glitch and get all scrambled, then jam up.

So I went into safe mode, un-installed all the video drivers, rebooted and it worked fine. Went and downloaded the newest drivers possible from the Official Dell site just to make sure I wasn't using faulty drivers.

But halfway through the install the screen would glitch and what not, I had to go back into safe mode and uninstall the drivers again and it worked fine.

This laptop has no warranty or anything, so if it truly is that the video card finally died I guess my only option is to buy a 7900 GS or GTX?

Just looking for some opinions (I'd hate to buy a card and find out it was some other problem with the laptop, even though I'm not a fan of this 7800 ) to make sure this truly is a video card problem, and to see if anyone knows where I might find a GS/GTX for decent prices.

Dell :: E1705 + Weird BSOD = Dead PC

Nov 12, 2008

My computer has been rendered incapacitated in the last week due to an odd blue screen error. Now when the problem initially occured i was opening the application World of Warcraft, as i loaded into the Login screen i was greeted by this odd blue screen error that read!

*** Hardware Malfunction
Call your hardware vendor for support
NMI: Parity Check/Memory Parity Error
*** The system has halted ***

Ok so i was rather suprised with this occuring as i had recently replaced my Video Card (From ATI Mobility x1400 to a Nvidia GeForce Go 7900 GS) as well as raising my ram from 1054MB (PC25300 NONECC UNBUFFERED 200PIN DDR2 SODIMM) to OCZ 3GB (2GB + 1GB) 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5400)

Now I read a few threads about this initial error and was told it could be many things, anything from a busted memory stick to a busted mother board and HD. Anyways once i restarted my computer i was now greeted with a more normal looking BSOD, which until i turned auto-reboot off i couldn't read. This new error read as follows.

PAGE_FAULT_IN_UNPAGED_AREA

Yada-yada i have all the error code numbers as well. I read up on this error code and it TOO can be caused by memory, so now my first thought is switch out my old memory and try it again right? So i proceed in having to reinstall Windows, replacing my new RAM with the old. Get my system up and running, everything working fine and then about 3 minutes into playing the Left 4 Dead demo I get the inital error once again and i'm stuck now.

I have now been lead to believe that this is indeed as i feared a hardware problem.. I'm going to be running a memtest on ALL 4 of my RAM sticks to just see exactly what's going on with my memory.

Is there anything else someone could help me to do? I will post my laptop's spec's as well as the Error Codes and Parameters for each of the 4 system errors i recived (2 at the inital screen 2 at the secondary on startup)

E1705 Laptop
Intel Core Duo T2500 @ 2.0 GHZ
1GB (2 x 5**MB) Dell Stock RAM (see all RAM spec's above)
256MB Nvidia GeForce Go 7900 GS
70GB hard drive
Sigma-Tel sound card
Running Windows XP professional SP3

Now for all the error codes along with dates / times:

11/8/08 (First Error)
11:24 PM

Error Code 10000050
Parameter1 f8055dbc
Parameter2 00000000
Parameter3 8052a8e4
Parameter4 00000000

11/8/08
11:32 PM

Error Code 10000050
Parameter1 f80b4dbc
Parameter2 00000000
Parameter3 8052a8e4
Parameter4 00000000

11/9/08 (Second Error)
8:43 AM

Error Code 10000050
Parameter1 f7a09dbc
Parameter2 00000000
Parameter3 8052a8e4
Parameter4 00000000

11/9/08
8:48 AM

Error Code 10000050
Parameter1 f7c8edbc
Parameter2 00000000
Parameter3 8052a8e4
Parameter4 00000000

----------------------------------------------------

Ok so I am going to begin a Memtest on all my RAM asap, should take a while. Also I'm concerned with these errors because I had been using my Video Card as well as the new RAM for a couple of weeks straight without any errors and my computer running flawlessly. I am afraid it probably isn't a memory error but i can hope.

Dell :: E1705, Dead Video Card

Mar 4, 2008

The screen on my 1705 has recently become cranky... scrambled, alternating between being on/off, inevitably leading to a BlueSOD (with nv4_disp error message.) Managed to check/update video drivers, but computer is pretty much non-functioning now.

Only thing that I can think of is that video card overheated and fried. In hindsight, I realize that I had spent a couple hours watching 24 with the computer not a good surface to allow ventilation.

Any other opinions before a I spend a couple hundred bucks on a new card?

Well the worst happened and my trusted Dell M1710 powerhouse that I've had for several years was dropped into a tub of water. I've got the complete care warranty so I called Dell to get a replacement unit.

Well after waiting a little over a week Dell agreed to send me a replacement unit; however, since the Dell XPS M1710 is no longer in stock they're going to send me a Dell Studio XPS 16.

I was wondering if everyone here thought that was a fair trade or an upgrade?

Dell :: XPS 1710 Laptop, Dead GeForce Go 7900 GTX Video Card

Has anyone else had any problems with their GeForce go 7 series video cards?

did a clean install of Windows XP and this is what I get...

1. when my laptop boots up the bios screen comes up with a bunch of vertical lines...
2. when windows boots up there is a bunch of vertical lines...
3. simple vga mode works... no vertical lines...
4. when I try to install the drivers for the 7900 GTX I get a BSOD...

Warranty...
So far the video card has been backordered twice... when I get called again
and if its for the same reason I'm going to ask what the next course of action will be...

I doubt there are any remaing Geforce Go 7 series video cards...

HP/Compaq :: Broken/dead Backlight On C714NR Laptop

Jun 19, 2009

I recently took my Compaq Presario C714NR laptop on a road trip, and one day some water spilled on the case without me realizing it, so that the case and laptop were wet when I got to my hotel room. The screen no longer illuminates - I can just barely see the proper windows and images on the screen if there is bright light in the room, but it's nearly invisible. I assume that either the backlight is dead or that a wire/connection to the backlight is loose or shorted.

Several months ago I had to replace the screen when the laptop was dropped and the screen broken (bought a new replace ment screen through eBay, replaced it myself), so the screen has had a bit of a hard life.

HP 625 OS/Software :: Laptop Won't Charge Anymore - Battery Almost Dead?

Jul 21, 2014

Is there any way to charge my battery now? I think my battery is completely dead now. Over the past few months, it's been staying turned on for less and less time without it's chord. Today, it said "battery 100%" "6 min". Usually, I have it charging just by turning the charger chord in some weird positions. I'm not sure if it's faulty wiring or not. I would much rather just buy a new battery than deal with faulty wiring.

Yes, I have been getting the change your battery thing in the start up menu. I have an HP 625, and have had it for over 3 years now. In the past year, I've been having to adjust my wire just so it can charge. It jiggles around a little bit when inside, but the chord/plug itself doesn't seem loose or anything... Today, that didn't work at all. I've been trying for the past several hours to move my chord to the right position just so my laptop can turn on. I usually get it charging in no more than 1 minute, but today was different. Last year, I replaced my charging and it seemed to of made it much easier to charge. However, this is a fairly newish charger and it's my battery at fault this time.

Will my issue be resolved just by getting a new battery? I can probably head over to Best Buy or something. Or maybe buy one online.

If you think I may also have a problem with faulty wiring, what can I do to get it fixed? I feel like it would cost me a lot. Or, do you think will getting a new battery resolve my charging issue?

Dell :: Dead Screen Or Dead Video Card

Mar 29, 2008

I am at my wits end with my e1705. I had a sudden meltdown about 2 weeks ago... screen went scrambled, BSOD,etc...

Performed diagnostic, memory on video card came back as bad. Replaced with new card (from Dell), reinstalled OS, completely reinstalled nVidea drivers from Dell (Used driver cleaner too)...

Everything went smooth for a couple hours after this was completed yesterday (full diagnostic showed no errors), but after booting up today, after about 5 or 10 minutes of use screen freezes and turns either solid cyan or black... a small pattern of thin lines appears also.

Dell :: Replacing GPU In M1730

Jan 13, 2010

I am down to 1 GPU on my M1730, in the interest of replacing it , from the forum sticky these seem to be the options

XPS M1730
Nvidia 8700M (both single and SLI****)
Nviida 8800M GTX SLI
Nvidia 9800M GT SLI
Nvidia 9800M GTX SLI

(I assumme this list is complete still . i.e. no 260's or 280's available)

Other than Dell or EBay are there any other sites , suppliers that people know of who might supply one of the above

DELL want 340 + Vat for a sli 8700m and there is every so often a 8800M for sale on ebay but they typically want approx 500 pounds for it (anyone had experience of buying one?)

I am dubious about the 8800 as evidence suggests it runs hot so would prefer a cheap 8700m or a warrentied 9800M
