1. My E7440 came with a SSD. Can I add a second internal HDD along with the the SSD?
2. If yes, would buying it from a different vendor (say Amazon) and installing it myself void my warranty?

Nov 19, 2009I'm getting my E6400 delivered tomorrow and i'm replacing the 80gb HDD with a 250gb one.
Any ideas about which brand works best in the E6400? Hitachi, Seagate, any other? It doesn't necessarily have to be 7200rpm but it does need to have freefall sensor or something similar.

Does any one have the 250HD how does it perform? same with the 160hd?

May 26, 2009At the min i have a 17 inch AR series Sony Vaio and i`m considering a change to a Dell XPS M1730, can you convince me to buy one ? I want one with the CORE 2 EXTREME X9000 processor, a bluray read and write drive, minimum around 620GB storage which would be 2 x 320 GB @ 7200 rpm and 4GB etc.
The size and weight won`t bother me as this will be a desktop replacement that will rarely leave the house.
I have a couple of questions if any M1730 owners could answer them ?
1. Can you tell me how quiet the XPS M1730 is when its just being used for general use, are the fans quiet etc ?
2. How much heat do they give off ?
3. How good are the bluray drives ?
4. What are the pros and cons ?

Jan 6, 2009I’ve recently purchased a 15-inch MacBook Pro (2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4Gb RAM), including a Mouse and a nice Covertec bag, all around 2,350€ (about 3,300$) in Spain.
This is my first post, and I’ve seen several awesome stickies, very helpful for new users like me, so the first thing is to thanks all the participants for this amazing work. What I really missed was a guide of pros and cons for new buyers (people like me who were hesitating whether it is worthy to switch from a PC). I found several good reviews in this forum, but what I mean is a summary. Pros and cons are spread in a lot of different posts, generally at the end of reviews. For instance, I spent 49 euros in an apple mouse that is completely useless for this laptop because the cable is too short (I work much quicker with the mouse than with the trackpad). I list my opinions about several other pros and cons. This is not a full review, only a short list of my first encounter with a MacBook Pro, after many years working with PCs:
1. Pros:
- Laptop: Nice look, light and very comfortable to work on laps (no heat/no noise).
- OS-X: Despite I was afraid, the switch from a PC is really easy. For me it is a lot easier to get a good organization with this OS than with XP or Vista (my other two windows laptops are a mess).
2. Cons:
- Useless mouse: As I said before, if you like me are used to work with a mouse, don`t buy a standard Apple mouse unless you are left-handed.
- Slippery: I have to be careful when opening the laptop, it needs to hold it because it is like the desk were slippery (my Fujitsu, a pound lighter than this, is much stable on the desk).
- Several things to get used to: Clicking on the upper left of a window to close it; few USBs, and both situated on the left; DVD reader: on the right side of the laptop, just where I have the mouse or the cable of the mouse… (Does anyone know if this laptop was designed for a left handed?).
- Delete: There is no Supr key to delete that all the PCs have; of course you can delete forward pressing two keys fn+del (it took me some time to find it out)....

Jul 28, 2009I received my 1640 yesterday. Big props to Dell, since I bought it on Friday around 3pm (outlet "previously ordered new") and Fed-Ex attempted to deliver it on Monday at 10am (picked it up at the distribution center at night).
I also received my 9-cell battery, but haven't had a chance to use it or review it, so this will focus on the 6-cell.
First - Boxing: Non-fancy tan cardboard box. The laptop was encased in foam and a foamy-sleeve.
No bags were included with this laptop. I got a slim AC adapter (probably about 1/3rd weight of the previous bricks), some cds, and the laptop. Nothing else. Should I have gotten a sleeve of some sort .....
Dell :: Internal Monitor
Dec 24, 2007I have a problem with my dell e1705 laptop. I was trying to set up an external monitor, after installing the drivers that came with the monitor i couldn't get the laptops internal monitor to start back up. I tried restarting with the external monitor unplugged but the laptops screen just glows with no picture. can anyone tell me how to enable my internal monitor? Only the external monitor shows up when i try to switch displays in the nvidia controlpanal.

Backstory - Ordered my laptop early December, took delivery mid December. I'm thrilled with the product except for the fact that it doesn't have bluetooth. I thought I had chosen that option, but upon looking at my invoice it appears I didn't. I went back through the customize engine on Dell's website and interestingly enough, I don't see anywhere you can choose bluetooth. Searched their parts website with no luck. Searched Google with no luck. So I tried to email Dell customer service. 3 weeks later, they finally told me to email/call tech support. So I called tech support yesterday. They told me that the wireless and bluetooth internal options are integrated onto the motherboard and have to be specified at the time of order. The only solution she could give me was to return the laptop and re-order it. The problem I voiced with that was that there isn't any way to specify bluetooth (or wireless N for that matter) on the customize page on Dell's website. Of course, she said she couldn't help with that and I needed to go back to customer service. Obviously, I was pretty irate (no cussing though! I kept my cool, but made it obvious I was upset) and she gave me a line that CS's lines were down and I needed to call them back in an hour.
So before I call CS, I'd like to try to get some more information. If you guys can help, I'd really appreciate it. Otherwise, I'm about ready to tell them to send a call tag send this thing back simply based on how terrible their after the sale service has been.

Dell :: Internal Speakers Not Working
Mar 6, 2009New thread to satisfy people. I don't know why it makes a difference whether a thread is new or old.
I have a Dell E1505 running XP. The headphone jack works but the internal computer speakers do not. Here's what I know:
(1) it's not the speakers. I've swapped an identical set of working speakers.
(2) it doesn't appear to be a software or driver problem. My settings look identical to those of another E1505, and I have tried re-installing drivers several times.
Dell XPS 15 :: How To Disable Internal Drive
Feb 11, 2013I have a standard internal HDD and a secondary HDD in the optical disk drive bay.The BIOS reports them as HDD (internal) and ODD (drive bay). What does ODD mean? Now in the Boot section the terms are:
•Hard Drive - shows my internal HDD. My secondary HDD does not appear here.
•CD/DVD/CD-RW Drive - is the optical drive. BUT as my secondary HDD is in the optical drive bay will this boot the secondary HDD?
•USB Storage Device - assume this refers to the USB ports
•Removable Drive - what is this? What boots from this?
•eSATA - assume it boots when an eSATA drive when attached
Finally. I know you can move the priority of boot options up and down BUT can you disable options? Eg. if you want to force a boot from a second drive - how can you disable the internal drive? (which you can do on many BIOSes)
Dell :: M1530 Vista 64 Internal Mic Problem
Jan 19, 2009Just installed Skype and have spent the last hour trying to get the internal mic to work and failed.
It's a Vista 64 install and I've installed the latest sigmatel drivers for Vista 64 from the Dell website. Appears to have installed fine.
I can see the microphone array and sigmatel codec under sound options, and the speakers are working fine, however the mic just refuses to work (sound recorder, skype etc all don't work)

May 22, 2010I'm a bit interested in seeing if I can put the micro receiver for my Logitech mouse somewhere inside my E6410's enclosure.
I've added micro receivers for stuff before to an eeePC 701, because I was able to connect a small USB board to the header on the motherboard originally used for the webcam.
Is there something similar that could be done to an E6410? Anyone tried this before?
Dell :: Brand New , Internal Monitor Crack
Feb 18, 2010I got my brand new Studio 1558. 11 Hours later, internal screen cracked. Not even touched by myself, sat on my desk unwrapped (I was yet to set it up,
as it was late at night i got it). I turn it on this morning to find the screen was cracked internally, bleeding. Dell are picking it up tomorrow.
I am extremely angry at this. I'm mainly here to see if this is a common problem. I have literally done nothing to provoke this crack. It was opened once.
I did however notice a few mild streaks at the point where this bleeding started, the first time i turned it on. It was only noticeable with pure black.

Mar 31, 2009Hoperfully somebody can help me out, I am completely out of ideas.
I have an E1705 and am running Vista Home Premium. There are two issues and are most likely related.
1) My internal xD card reader keeps asking me to format a card even though nothing is inserted in there, and to be quite honest I can't even remember the last time I used an xD card.
I have tried uninstalling the device/driver and reinstalling using the most recent as well as even older drivers with no luck ....
Dell :: Not So Efficient 1330 Internal Bluetooth?
Jan 5, 2009My girl friend has bought Dell bluetooth headset along with 1330. At first the sound was awful, then I reinstalled the bluetooth driver available from Dell support website.
The sound quality has improved a lot but it works only when I sit in front of the laptop with intermittent lag.
The same headset when I use with my HP nc8430 works perfect without any lag for more than ten meters away behind the wall.

May 18, 2010I've got a Dell XPS 1640. My internal speakers don't work with itunes and most other applications. However, when I ran the Dell diagnostics, sound was produced. Dell tech support told me that its a software problem because there was sound in the diagnostic test.
They checked the drivers etc which are current and recommended that I reformat back to factory settings which is a major hassle. I'm running Vista 64 bit, but do have a Windows 7 update disk which I haven't installed yet. They told me that installing the Windows 7 update wouldn't fix the problem.
