View 10 Replies View RelatedAt the min i have a 17 inch AR series Sony Vaio and i`m considering a change to a Dell XPS M1730, can you convince me to buy one ? I want one with the CORE 2 EXTREME X9000 processor, a bluray read and write drive, minimum around 620GB storage which would be 2 x 320 GB @ 7200 rpm and 4GB etc.
The size and weight won`t bother me as this will be a desktop replacement that will rarely leave the house.
I have a couple of questions if any M1730 owners could answer them ?
1. Can you tell me how quiet the XPS M1730 is when its just being used for general use, are the fans quiet etc ?
2. How much heat do they give off ?
3. How good are the bluray drives ?
4. What are the pros and cons ?
I am about to get one upgrading from my M1210.some pros and cons about this notebook? I am getting the one with an LED screen so will i really see a difference between the m1210's screen and the 1330's?
View 15 Replies View RelatedI’ve recently purchased a 15-inch MacBook Pro (2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4Gb RAM), including a Mouse and a nice Covertec bag, all around 2,350€ (about 3,300$) in Spain.
This is my first post, and I’ve seen several awesome stickies, very helpful for new users like me, so the first thing is to thanks all the participants for this amazing work. What I really missed was a guide of pros and cons for new buyers (people like me who were hesitating whether it is worthy to switch from a PC). I found several good reviews in this forum, but what I mean is a summary. Pros and cons are spread in a lot of different posts, generally at the end of reviews. For instance, I spent 49 euros in an apple mouse that is completely useless for this laptop because the cable is too short (I work much quicker with the mouse than with the trackpad). I list my opinions about several other pros and cons. This is not a full review, only a short list of my first encounter with a MacBook Pro, after many years working with PCs:
1. Pros:
- Laptop: Nice look, light and very comfortable to work on laps (no heat/no noise).
- OS-X: Despite I was afraid, the switch from a PC is really easy. For me it is a lot easier to get a good organization with this OS than with XP or Vista (my other two windows laptops are a mess).
2. Cons:
- Useless mouse: As I said before, if you like me are used to work with a mouse, don`t buy a standard Apple mouse unless you are left-handed.
- Slippery: I have to be careful when opening the laptop, it needs to hold it because it is like the desk were slippery (my Fujitsu, a pound lighter than this, is much stable on the desk).
- Several things to get used to: Clicking on the upper left of a window to close it; few USBs, and both situated on the left; DVD reader: on the right side of the laptop, just where I have the mouse or the cable of the mouse… (Does anyone know if this laptop was designed for a left handed?).
- Delete: There is no Supr key to delete that all the PCs have; of course you can delete forward pressing two keys fn+del (it took me some time to find it out)....
Does anyone know the pros and cons for the Acer Aspire 6920G, because I am trying to really make sure this laptop is going to be worth every single penny, and I want it to see what I can do if it lacks in one certain area.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI received my 1640 yesterday. Big props to Dell, since I bought it on Friday around 3pm (outlet "previously ordered new") and Fed-Ex attempted to deliver it on Monday at 10am (picked it up at the distribution center at night).
I also received my 9-cell battery, but haven't had a chance to use it or review it, so this will focus on the 6-cell.
First - Boxing: Non-fancy tan cardboard box. The laptop was encased in foam and a foamy-sleeve.
No bags were included with this laptop. I got a slim AC adapter (probably about 1/3rd weight of the previous bricks), some cds, and the laptop. Nothing else. Should I have gotten a sleeve of some sort .....

View 3 Replies View RelatedI purchased a VGN-AR630E sometime around January 2008 that has been completely awesome up until last month, when I had to turn off the laptop during a game with the power button.
When it restarted, the initial VIAO screen had a bunch of vertical lines, the following screen had a bunch of ((((( on it, and windows would not start outside of safe mode. I paid Sony to connect to my laptop to fix the issue which I was told the first time was virus related, the next time it was due to using a registry booster program a year ago.
By this time the problem had worsened to the point where I could not get into windows even with safe mode, so I purchased the VIAO recovery disks and set my computer to original factory condition. Initially this worked and the computer ran great for about a day, until I installed a game and ran it .....
In the past I have owned Sony Vaio desktops and I’m now looking at a Vaio laptop. I am currently looking at the VGN-NS235J/P. It can be found on the Sony site
as well as Amazon (pre-order only). (Sorry, not sure if I can post links here.)My question is regarding the processor. If I look at the Sony site it shows a thumbnail of the processor being a Centrino 2, but if I look at Amazon it shows it being a Pentium Dual-Core. It has been about five years since I bought a new computer so I am trying to figure out the details. From what I’ve read on the Intel site the Centrino is a much newer as well as bigger/better/faster processor. I am a PhotoShop junkie and need speed.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI own a VIAO Z VGN-Z90NS (bought in Japan), did a fresh install with vista retail and have also changed the OS to Windows 7. Since I am not able to download drivers from Japanese VIAO Homepage I downloaded the drivers from US.
When I watch any kind of video i.e. flash video, video of Youtube etc. I experience some "lags" with the videos. The videos clips or flash don't run smoothly. I wonder if it's connected to the problem that I didn't use Japanese drivers?
i have a sony viao VGN-NR32S and recently pu windows vista 64 on to it, now i dont know too much about computers and was trying to get the Wlan drivers for it and couldnt find them anywhere

on the windows vista start up i can hear the sound of desktop loading but after some times when i play any multimedia file like MP3 or VDO
the sound goes off oftenly but not always
why it happens?
i checked evething on it there is no software problem niether hardware is missing. in device manager it shows device working properly.
to fix this problem i have to reboot they the machine or have to put it on stand by mode by folding the notebook n get it active
I finally really got tired of Vista Home with it's limitations and quirks, and want to go back to Win2k. Anybody tried to load win2k on a FW series VIAO machine like this or similar? I found most w2k drivers inc. the LAN and WL card, so far so good. I've not tried the install yet, waiting for a new Seagate SATA 7200 320G HD, don't want to mess with this one (SATA 250G 5400) until I have the 2K system up and running on the new HD.
Guess I'll need to slipstream a boot CD with the SATA drivers, SP4, etc. Never done it, but have seen plenty of guides out there. Maybe... MAYBE, I'll try for a w2k/vista dual boot system, buy only after w2k is humming along nicely. I'm guessing this machine must fly with a relatively lightweight O/S like w2k (compared to a hog like vista).

I had a chance to stop by at apple store today, and compared the anti glare screens on both 15 inch and 17 inch models. To my surprise, the 15 inch one was much brighter than 17 inch one. I made sure that both had max brightness settings, and it was clear that 15 inch one was superior. maybe this 17 inch display model was defect? anyone has opposite experience? (btw, I hate seeing myself and losing focus because of reflective glassy screens)

View 3 Replies View RelatedI bought a new Inspiron last week and got it yesterday - I am happy with it except feel a bit annoyed as I though wide screen of 15.6 would be the same as 15.4 normal screen in terms of height, but with a slightly wider screen.
It turns out that actually it is half an inch shorter! And 768 pixels high does not seem enough.
I looked into the 17inch model and for only £25 more I can get the same speced laptop.
Does anyone know how much I might get charged for returning the 15 inch to get the 17 inch (it has been within 21 days) ....
Apple will mail me a new 17 inch MBP unibody(Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66, 4G memory, 320G hard drive) and I found out that I like the 15 inch MBP unibody more (lighter yet the same powerful machine). Is there anyway that I can take it back to apple store and exchange for a 15 inch MBP?

No applecare left on it
Condition: Very minor wear and tear, but its in excellent condition because its been in a speck plastic case from day one with all the protective casing features below and kept in a neoprene sleeve when on the go
Battery: there are two, one is absolute shot (as in it lasts about 1 minute before i get a low battery warning), the other is brand new and hasnt been opened yet
Accessories: it also came with a brand new (not even opened) battery, a full body speck plastic case, rubber keyboard cover, trackpad film cover, and rubbery/felt like cover for the part below the keyboard and trackpad buttons, oh and a 15 inch neoprene sleeve...my sister is sort of a freak about protecting it............

Guess what, if it is a computer for your child you cant even turn the button off or set it with a password. It resides on your motherboard any parental controls mcafee or otherwise are useless. The system for the quick access is by devicevm and is called splashtop.
how to control this, keep in mind this runs straight off the motherboard and windows is not fired up.
I have a SONY VIAO VGN-SZ433N_B. I'm constantly reminded that there are new updates for my lap top, but when I try to install I am told 'VAIO Update 4.0 is required. VAIO Update (Ver. 4.0 and above) is required on your VAIO Notebook.'
So I installed Sony Update 4.0.0.08240 but still it isnt recognised. I have even tried to uninstall the previous Update module and then re install without success. I keep getting the same message, indicating that the Viao Update 4 I have isnt being recognised.
im trying to decide out of thes laptops would be better uni and a little bit or gaming.
