Dell :: D830 With T7300 Multiplier Issue

Feb 7, 2010

Laptops been working great for years.

Finally put Windows 7 x64 on the other day and I didn't notice at first but after a few weeks I started realizing the thing just isn't as fast for normal tasks as it used to be.

I remember I used to run speedswitch for XP back in the day and it maxed my CPU clock all the time. It obviously doesn't work for 7x64. So I loaded up CPUZID to check things out.

Basically the key reading is:

Current MHZ: 1595.54 Current Multiplier: 8x
Original MHZ: 2000 Origina Multiplier: 10x

My aspire is as per topic title a 7720 T7300 (2.0ghz ,800mhz FSB , 4mb L2 cache)

I am running a recent Bios flash so up to 1.43 spec.

Is a CPU upgrade to a T9300...simple just a case of processor pull and new CPU refit?

Will it be of benefit or worthwhile in the firstplace?

As i can get a Intel®Core™2DuoMobile Processor T9300/2.5GHz/800MHz/6MB

HP/Compaq :: Envy 15 Fixed Multiplier (x7) On Battery

Dec 23, 2009

My Envy has the i7-720QM processor. I noticed significant reduced performance when running on battery.

RealTemp, Sandra, i7Turbo, Intel turbo boost monitor, cpuid, etc.. all report the multiplier at 7 (~930MHz), and won't move from there no matter what I do on the machine.

The multiplier seems locked/fixed at 7 regardless of load. As soon as it is unplugged it dives to 7.

I've changed the power plan to high performance and set min/max power management to 100%. This made no difference.

Is the BIOS forcing this? I believe 7 is the low frequency multiplier but shouldn't this kick in only is there is no activity (to save power?). If I am doing work, I expect the processor to at least run at the minimum frequency specified.

This behavior has been confirmed now by other members of the forum. Previos BIOS releases (F.05 and F.06) have been tested and showed the same issue.

I attached two screenshots, one the system running on power, and the other one on battery. Both running prime95 small FFTs.

Dell :: D830 Suddenly Getting HOT!

Aug 3, 2009

So for the past month or so, my D830 has been getting incredibly hot - something it has never done before. In fact, I used to 'brag' about how cool and quiet it was.

Now, about 20 - 30 minutes into computing, it's fans whirl at full speed and the entire bottom and right palm area get very, very, hot - even when the notebook is on a hard, flat surface.

Dell :: D830 Powered USB 2.0 Port

The Dell D830 comes equipped with one powered USB port at the rear.

The powered USB port is compatible with USB 2.0 connector. When used with a powered USB connector that looks like a bloated RJ45, powered USB port can supply 5V (beige), 12V (blue), or 24V (red)..

They are color-coded and connectors are keyed to distinguish between them..

Dell :: D830 Display Downgrade

Mar 10, 2009

I'm getting headaches from my 1680 x 1050 display, it's a matte finish and has a very narrow viewing angle.

I run it at 1280 x 768 for best size and aspect, but it's then a bit fuzzy, too. Is it a reasonable change to go to a 1280 x 800 high-gloss display to get crisp text and wide viewing angle?

Dell :: Does Anyone Have In Their Possession A D830 With Nvs140m

Dec 27, 2007

I had a D620 with the nvs120m, and I was very disappointed by graphics performance. I'm told the 140 is build off of an 8400, which should be much better than the 7300 the 120 is built off of. Also, my D620 had 64mb dedicated, and I'm told the D830 has 256mb dedicated. Does anyone who actually HAS the laptop have any input on how the thing handles games? I'm not expecting it to do well, but my D620 couldn't run anything even with the lowest setting on.

Dell :: Quadro NVS140M And Latitude D830

Oct 2, 2008

I'm starting to get some weird video symptoms on my Latitude D830 with the Nvidia Quadro NVS140M video. Fairly random at this point, maybe once or twice a week, the screen does something weird in terms of displaying stuff that it completely shouldn't, even during boot-up.

Don't know if this chip is a member of the family of Nvidia chips that suffers from the bugs, but has anyone else experienced this with a heavily-used Latitude D830 yet?

If I have to get a new motherboard, has Nvidia actually implemented a solution, or are they still shipping the same parts? I have ~3 years of warranty left (plus the bonus year), but I don't look forward to a motherboard replacement every year or so.

Dell :: Latitude D830 Touchpad Drivers

May 4, 2010

Dear All

I've been using Dell Inspiron for more than 3 years. It had a nice touchpad driver with which i could assign shortcuts to all the four corners of touchpad (e.g., Maximizing a window, minimizing, closing, and running a special application etc.). Now i m used to those shortcuts but they are not available in the new drivers of Dell Latitude D830, that i recently got. Can anybody point to the D830 touchpad driver having this facility or any free third party utility for that?

Thanks

i've recently purchased a 2nd hand dell D830 laptop. it was running windows vista and everything was working fine. but i need to have it running XP, so i formatted and installed XP PRO.

entered the service tag on support site, downloaded the "shipping" drivers. most of them install, some terminate with errors, others tell me that the hardware isn't found. no audio, also wrong display drivers, points me to intel drivers, but that doesn't install, nvidia one does the trick... just endless problems, but when i revert to VISTA, it all works again.

i need this machine to run xp.

Dell :: D830 Screen (a Very Small Black Speck)

Dell :: D830 Motherboard Compatible With D820 Laptop

Therefore I was thinking if the d830 motherboard has the same fit as the prior since after some looking into it they look very much alike but it would kinda suck if it didn`t fit.

Dell :: My New Precision M4300 Thinks It's A Latitude D830

Apr 28, 2009

I just got a new Dell Precision M4300 here in Israel (refurbished, not directly from Dell) with the following configuration:

CPU: Core 2 Extreme X9000
LCD: 15.4" WUXGA
Graphics: Quadro NVS 140M (apparently)
HDD: 160GB SATA 7200RPM

My question is as follows:

It in fact says Precision M4300 on the front of the laptop near the keyboard,
But when I turn it on it identifies itself as a Latitude D830.

I bought the laptop thinking I was getting a Quadro FX360M (it is CAD certified which is important to me as I work with their program).

What is going on? was I fooled in some way?

If I apply the latest M4300 BIOS update will it change the names of the laptop model and the graphics card?

Dell :: D830 Adaptive Screen Brightness Win7

Dec 31, 2009

does anybody know how to get the Windows 7 built-in screen brightness control to work with the D830?

Manual brightness control via FN+Up/Down works perfect, but Windows 7 does not offer software brightness control in energy options.

My second notebook (5 years old Toshiba) offers this (you will see a brightness slider when clicking on the battery/energy symbol in system tray).
As a result Windows is dimming (not turning off) the display automatically after a few minutes idle time.

Dell :: [E6500][esata][RAID Port Multiplier] Raid 1 Enclosure Not Regnosized Using The Esata Port

Mar 5, 2009

Here's my story and, let's say, my analysis:

I bought a generic 2 HD sata2 RAID1 enclosure based on the chipset Silicon Image SteelVine 5744. It can be used in USB or eSATA2. This embedded chipset (named SiL5744) is known (understand "claimed") to auto-handle Sata I/II and host sata2 controllers that not support the port multiplier feature. The HD are two Samsung F1 1To. There's no jumper to rollback to SATA 1.5Go on them, you can only do it by flashing the HD's bios, however we don't need to do it as I wrote just before, the SiL5744 supports SATA 3Go natively.

The enclosure works pretty well with USB, but *not* in eSATA : the E6500 freezes/hangs just after the POST step (a potential driver issue with the installed vista 64bits is not the reason then). As soon has I disconnect the eSATA cable, the system recovers and continues as normal.

What I've tried/done so far :

Both E6500's BIOS SATA mode AHCI and IRRT mode were tested,
Intel Matrix driver and software was updated to the latest 8.7.0.1007 version (AHCI and IRRT),
The SiL5744 chip was upgraded to its latest firmware as well (in case of...)

In order to verify the esata cable, the HDs and the enclosure itself, I succeed to :

- Use the enclosure's RAID1 feature when using the USB connection, I could partition,format, and read/write on the logical volume
- directly connect *one* HD (Samsung F1 1To) to the E6500's esata port -(I have a sata2esata cable), Vista installed it and I was able to use it as normal, even the hotswap feature seemed to work fine (I unkindly removed it). I could so test both HD individually this way... On the enclosure hardware side, everything looks fine then.

An IMPORTANT thing : The E6500's ICH8/9-M sata host controller seems to support the Port Multiplier feature *ONLY* on sata port 0 -as a bubble message from the Intel Matrix soft sometimes shows up-, but this is exactly where the internal HD is plugged on the motherboard I found nowhere you can change the internal sata port ID (switch,bios,ect...). I think this is the key of the problem that seems to be a dumb port conflict, because the esata port is in fact the port sata 4 (the DVDRW drive is sata 1, dock's esata is 5 for instance). If somebody knows how to swap the sata port ID, I think I won't be toasted !

Dell :: Replacing Laptop Fans, And General Cooling Tips For D830

Aug 20, 2009

I'd like to replace the fan in my laptop (Dell's Latitude d830) with a faster/better one. From what I've seen, most people seem to think that this is impossible.

I, however, find this hard to believe that Dell would have included the only possible fan that's compatible with this laptop, or that this particular fan is the best possible cooling option.

Why is it so hard to upgrade in the first place? I'm sure it can be done, I've opened up my laptop a few times in the past and it's not exactly rocket science .....
