Since the SXPS 16 chipset is the PM45, I wanted to know if anyone here has tried upgrading their CPU to a quad core?
I recently bought a QX9200 off ebay that I plan to put in the revised SXPS 16 when it comes out.
I will be buying a new laptop to replace my Acer Aspire 5738G.
I am considering HP Dv8t Quad Core i7 or HP Probook 4720s.
I am a web developer and I some time use my laptop continuously for 2-3 days.
choosing between these 2 laptops, which one will be better for me?

View 10 Replies View RelatedI've been a Dell guy for probably around 8 years or so. I always buy the XPS's for the power / warranty / ruggedness. Now I find myself searching for a different manufacturer as they seem to be pricing themselves out of the market with second tier components.
Someone here mentioned the PC MicroWorks Blackhawk XR5 Quad Core and I took a look at it. This thing reminds me of what I used to expect from the XPS line.
Is there a subforum on notebookforums.com to discuss this product?
If not, I'm happy to do it here.

I've seen a number of rescent posts where folks are still setting up RAID platforms even though dual core and now quad core processors are becoming mainstream.Is it the additional chipset that you demand or what is it that requires the additional hp you seek? there is no game out there I cannot play without it and short of CAD I see little use other than proffesional requirements (NIMBUS 2.1 or Zach, perhaps).

View 10 Replies View RelatedI have been pulling out my hair to figure out if it is possible to improve the processor performance of my Studio XPS 16. I did a significant amount of research before buying this Dell model and, all in all, I am happy with my decision. However, I have noticed that the processor is not as capable as the Q9000 that was in my Asus W90 that I sold.
That was the beginning of my research on the chipset (PM45) and socket type (P: 478) of the Studio XPS 16. This matches the Intel Quad Cores and, more specifically, this particular one: INTEL CORE QUAD Q9200 2.4GHZ 12M 1066 CPU.
Dell told me that these Quad Cores are not compatible with the Studio XPS 1640.
Are they both sharing the same CPU ?

my plan is to buy an 8530w and swap out the cpu for a Q9100 Quad Core. Anyway, is there special cooling needed for the quad core? I asked only because i noticed that if I tried to add a quad core on the HP website it requires a 'special' graphics card. This got me thinking that they might have added something for the quad cores that they leave out of the normal ones.

View 10 Replies View RelatedI have a quad core Lenovo W520 (i7-2820QM) equipped with Intel AMT. I have all RAM slots populated (original 2GB in each that came with the machine). I have updated to the latest BIOS (1.42 at the time of writing) and latest Intel Management Engine Firmware 7.1 (7.1.85.1216 at the time of writing). The machine has Crucial 256GB X100 SSD installed in the main compartment and a regular HDD in UltraBay.
The computer acts normally in sleep mode and restart sequence only when Intel AMT states that "ME is in recovery state..." during boot.
When it looks like AMT is happy problems begin. The problem is that when I'm trying to put the computer to sleep it goes all the way until the end per normal procedure and then suddenly decides to power itself off! Obviously Windows doesn't like this and displays recovery suggestions after starting the laptop again. This happens when connected to AC and also when disconnected from it. Also, when computer reboots it turns off all power (i.e. the display along with backlight, indicator LEDs turn off and fans spin down for a sec) inbetween and automatically starts up after that.
I've tested this on Windows 7 and openSUSE 13.1 (which I had lying nearby) and same behavior happens on both OSes. On Windows, all the latest drivers and updates were installed. So I don't think this is driver nor OS dependent - rather firmware/hardware related problem.
What is funny, it doesn't matter whether Intel AMT is activated in BIOS or not. What matters is whether the Management Engine is in some kind of recovery state or not. When it's not, computer starts acting crazy as stated above and behaviour is repeatable. Intel AMT itself seems to work however. Changing the power policy in Intel ME configuration doesn't work for sleep issue.
Some things I've also tried doing:
* Replace CMOS battery (measured its voltage before putting it in, of course) with a new one - no effect
* Tried two different brands of SSDs (OCZ Vertex 3 and Crucial X100) - no effect
* Tried both legacy and UEFI modes - no effect
* Scanned RAM for memory errors - no effect
Could Lenovo try to repeat this issue and possibly do something about this?

So im looking at one with an 18.4" screen an one with a 17.3" screen. one has blu-ray burner and one no blue ray. one is q9000 quad an the other is i7 quad core. i don't know which is best.

I have seen both the Precision M4400 and the Latitude E6500 up close before and I do realize that both laptops use pretty much the same lower chassis and other modular internals with the only difference is the screen and screen bezel and touchpad unit.
With the exact port locations the same. Is it worth it to get a refurbished M4400 motherboard and swap it with a Latitude E6500 one and putting it in a fully working Latitude E6500?
The reason I ask about this is a friend of mine's mother works for a company that resells their ~1 year old Latitudes for a really cheap price (I think Latitude E6500's go around $250-$350 a piece!) and replace them with newer Latitudes and (rarely Precisions) from Dell the following year.
I have an old mac powerbook G4, i dont want to buy a new mac but I rather use a little money fixing this one up and making it faster and putting in the new OS. What are some steps I can take to make this computer faster, more reliable and up to speed with the new stuff out there (well this may be a stretch, but as much as possible)?
I need it to handle some multi-tasking and mostly school related stuff. Nothing major like designing, etc.
My HP model number 15do11TU, product code F6D42PA#ABG has a black screen with the cursor after I've entered the password. I can open the task manager but when I click switch to to try and get anything open nothing happens. I've tried removing the battery and powering off/on but still nothing ....

the 2700 has 2.33 ghz but only 2 meg cache.. the 7400 has 2.16 ghz but 4 meg chache...
or should i keep my 7200....
I bought the Acer 1410 with the single core SU3500 Core 2 Solo CPU. It looks like Acer decided to release them with the SU2300 now, which is dual core at 1.2GHz (compared with 1.4GHz of SU3500).
Does anyone have any benchmarks comparing the two, and/or if they have a solid understanding how much better it would perform compared with the SU3500? I also see that the single core AS1410 with Celeron M @ 1.3GHz sells at the same price as the dual core.

How to disassemble your notebook?
I found out a very good video tutorial on how to disassemble my Aspire notebook on YouTube. So please take your time to view it and follow step by step as shown to help you to go through the process.
Lapping your heat sink (optional)
Although its not necessary, but I would recommend this process as another way to improve heat dissipation on your newly installed CPU. Refer to this page for detailed instructions.
The simple process:Clean your heat sink from old thermal paste residues with alcohol or equivalent of it using ear buds and kitchen papers.Apply a 600-grid sandpaper to smoothen the heat sink surface which comes into contact with your CPU.Repeat the process again with a 1200-gid sand paper until youre satisfied.Finally, finish up by applying a 2000-grid sand paper to give you an almost mirror-finished surface. Wipe clean any dirt and residues left.....................................
Rear camera is putting a stripe in pictures.
Works fine for video, preview of still photos perfect.Take the picture and as the photos "swooshes" to the left, you see that the saved image has a stripe about a third of the way up. For some reason, the saved image is copying the bottom 5% or so of the image, and "pasting" that slightly offset into the bottom third of the photo.
Taking a PrtSc copies a perfct image into the clipboard, (includes camera icons).
Changing image aspect, disablig Camera Plus does nothing.
At least three other people posted on a Microsoft page about this, seems to have arrived with 8.1 upgrade.
Tried uninstalling and reinstalling both drivers, no joy?
I have installed a clean Windows 8.1 on the Helix and have several issues.
The first thing I did after installing the system (and critical Windows Updates) was running the Lenovo System Update tool and downloading everything.
Helix turns on by itself after shutting down or putting into sleep. Disabled intel rapid start in BIOS. Cannot alter the “30 day standby mode” in settings because dependency package cannot be installed (issue 1).
I have an Acer Aspire 4720Z. Since long I had been using XP. Recently it was formatted and Windows 7 was installed. But after this upgradation, the WLAN is not working. Have banged my head with drivers and all.
Device manager is showing Microsoft Virtual Wi-Fi miniport adapter (although with XP it simply showed by the name of WLAN adapter as far as I remember). And checking it's properties it says that the device is working properly. When Intel Wi-Fi Technology is tried to get started, it says that 'A supported intel wireless network adapter not found'.
