Dell :: Deciding Between M4400 And M6400 (both With QX9300)
Nov 21, 2009I bought two laptops from Dell Outlet M4400 and M6400. Really need help deciding which one I should keep (and add to my signature) and which one to send back. I am sure this community can help me make an informed decision. Thanks.
My usage:
-Development - VS 2008, MS SQL and tools.
-Graphics - Limited Photoshop (Beginner to Mid level)
-Virtual Machines - 1 to 2 at any given time
-Always ON configuration
-NO Gaming - sorry I suck at games!
-Occasional Travel
M4400: $1500
QX9300 - 2GB - 80GB 72K RPM - RGB LED LCD - NVidia 1700
My plan is to swap the 80 GB with my tablet PC's 120 GB and install 320 GB in modular bay also get 4 GB RAM bringing total cost to about $1650
Pros: Manageable size, RGB LED
Cons: Additional cost for RAM and modular bay HDD, Not sure about TrueLife Glossyness yet!
M6400: $1700
QX9300 - 4GB - 120 GB SSD + 250 GB 72K - WXGA LCD - Nvidia 2700
Pros: Pretty much everything
Cons: Low res LCD and BIG+Heavy even for occasional travel or meetings.
I could find cheaper configurations but I picked the one's with QX9300. There are some available in both machines that are T9900 and are ~$300 cheaper.
Questions:
1. Am I making the right decision by getting QX9300 given my somewhat non power usage? Is heat an issue in either? I do want to future proof at least for 2 years.
2. If I go for lower CPU should I go for x9100 or T9900 or Q9000/9100, they do show up occasionally on the outlet site.
3. I really find the second hard drive option useful. Does the slightly higher mobility of m4400 justify additional cost to buy and install the mod bay HDD?
4. Are the prices reasonable for the configurations above? I can find a m4400 with T9900/4GB/250GB/WXGA for ~$1150 and a M6400 with T9900/4GB/NO SSD for ~$1200

Mar 27, 2009Can this be done without a new motherboard or special heatsink? I originally wanted to do with the an HP 8530w but as the dual-core mobo is not compatible with the quad mobo it's no longer an option for me. Is the m4400 constructed in a similar fashion? or did Dell opt for a universal mobo?

Oct 10, 2009i recently bought this laptop and im running stress tests on this laptop w/ prime95 and told by a fellow board member(who has been of wonderful help) that they detect issue w/ my heatsink mounting/paste for my quad core qx9300. it was stated that thermal throttle shouldnt happen until temperatures into the 100 celsius range on a laptop?
1) i start the test and all 4 cores are steady running through tests
2) after 3 min, the first 2 cores max out at 91, 90 celsius while the last 2
are 89,88. The first 2 cores start going down in temp to about 76, 75 and
never complete another test while the last 2 cores are 85, 86 celsius and
run through an additional 8 tests afterwards.
can anyone give more feedback or possibly try these tests also? i run 64 bit vista also.

Dec 14, 2007I've been a Dell guy for probably around 8 years or so. I always buy the XPS's for the power / warranty / ruggedness. Now I find myself searching for a different manufacturer as they seem to be pricing themselves out of the market with second tier components.
Someone here mentioned the PC MicroWorks Blackhawk XR5 Quad Core and I took a look at it. This thing reminds me of what I used to expect from the XPS line.

Feb 14, 2008I've seen a number of rescent posts where folks are still setting up RAID platforms even though dual core and now quad core processors are becoming mainstream.Is it the additional chipset that you demand or what is it that requires the additional hp you seek? there is no game out there I cannot play without it and short of CAD I see little use other than proffesional requirements (NIMBUS 2.1 or Zach, perhaps).

Jan 5, 2010I have been pulling out my hair to figure out if it is possible to improve the processor performance of my Studio XPS 16. I did a significant amount of research before buying this Dell model and, all in all, I am happy with my decision. However, I have noticed that the processor is not as capable as the Q9000 that was in my Asus W90 that I sold.
That was the beginning of my research on the chipset (PM45) and socket type (P: 478) of the Studio XPS 16. This matches the Intel Quad Cores and, more specifically, this particular one: INTEL CORE QUAD Q9200 2.4GHZ 12M 1066 CPU.
Dell told me that these Quad Cores are not compatible with the Studio XPS 1640.

Mar 24, 2009my plan is to buy an 8530w and swap out the cpu for a Q9100 Quad Core. Anyway, is there special cooling needed for the quad core? I asked only because i noticed that if I tried to add a quad core on the HP website it requires a 'special' graphics card. This got me thinking that they might have added something for the quad cores that they leave out of the normal ones.

Lenovo ThinkPad W Series :: Quad Core W520 (with Intel AMT) Powers Off When Attempting To Put It In Sleep Mode
Oct 14, 2014I have a quad core Lenovo W520 (i7-2820QM) equipped with Intel AMT. I have all RAM slots populated (original 2GB in each that came with the machine). I have updated to the latest BIOS (1.42 at the time of writing) and latest Intel Management Engine Firmware 7.1 (7.1.85.1216 at the time of writing). The machine has Crucial 256GB X100 SSD installed in the main compartment and a regular HDD in UltraBay.

The computer acts normally in sleep mode and restart sequence only when Intel AMT states that "ME is in recovery state..." during boot.

When it looks like AMT is happy problems begin. The problem is that when I'm trying to put the computer to sleep it goes all the way until the end per normal procedure and then suddenly decides to power itself off! Obviously Windows doesn't like this and displays recovery suggestions after starting the laptop again. This happens when connected to AC and also when disconnected from it. Also, when computer reboots it turns off all power (i.e. the display along with backlight, indicator LEDs turn off and fans spin down for a sec) inbetween and automatically starts up after that.

I've tested this on Windows 7 and openSUSE 13.1 (which I had lying nearby) and same behavior happens on both OSes. On Windows, all the latest drivers and updates were installed. So I don't think this is driver nor OS dependent - rather firmware/hardware related problem.

What is funny, it doesn't matter whether Intel AMT is activated in BIOS or not. What matters is whether the Management Engine is in some kind of recovery state or not. When it's not, computer starts acting crazy as stated above and behaviour is repeatable. Intel AMT itself seems to work however. Changing the power policy in Intel ME configuration doesn't work for sleep issue.

Some things I've also tried doing:
* Replace CMOS battery (measured its voltage before putting it in, of course) with a new one - no effect
* Tried two different brands of SSDs (OCZ Vertex 3 and Crucial X100) - no effect
* Tried both legacy and UEFI modes - no effect
* Scanned RAM for memory errors - no effect

Nov 15, 2008it is only 51mb.
Specviewperf is probably a better openGL benchmark,particularly for the common openGL software used,but is a rather unreasonable download size compared to this,which does a short openGL test as well as cpu rendering tests.
So if some owners of any of the Precisions can post a score here,it will probably be helpful to prospective owners as to what sort of comparative performance between models and specs there is.

Jan 31, 2009Are there drivers, or software, that allow access and the bility to tweak the core clock speed on the FX 1700M video card in my M4400? I beleive the FX 1700M consumes an extra 15W of power (over the 770M) simply because it is clocked faster.

The M6400 supports dual-channel DDR3-1066 memory.
Both systems have a FSB that operates at 1066 MHz.
I'm trying to understand if the different memory technologies ultimately make a difference for computational (i.e. math on large data sets) performance in these particular machines.
Consider an M4400 and M6400 with identical CPUs and amounts of DDR-2 and DDR-3 memory, respectively. And suppose that all relevant memory latencies are identical. For the sake of this question, I don't care about power consumption and heat (which is obviously a benefit of DDR3).
Question:
Since both machines support dual-channel memory operation, the maximum effective bandwidth of the memory bus is doubled. So the dual-channel DDR2-800 can achieve 12.8 GB/sec transfer rate, while the dual-channel DDR3-1066 can achieve 17 GB/sec transfer rate. In either case, these rates are higher than the 8.5 GB/sec rate that the FSB can achieve, so it seems that performance in both machines is limited by the speed of the FSB (1066 MHz). Is that correct?

Jan 24, 2010how to do a clean install and to backup the swsetup folder and to create a set of restore disks just for the hell of it and all of that...so that's not really what I need assistance with.
I was wondering if someone wouldn't mind listing all of the drivers & software that I need to reinstall after the clean OS install is done so I don't miss anything and also the order in which they are to be installed. Why am I asking this? Because this is my first HP, I've always had Dell's before and I realize HP has some other software for like the hard drive protection and stuff so I'm not very familiar with it.
I wasn't able to order my system with a blu-ray drive as their is a global shortage and it was only being offered on the DV8T...which is just way to big for me. HP says they put comments in my file/account that state when they get blu-ray drives in that they will either swap the drive out for me or give me a new computer because of the inconvienence. Now I'm not holding my breath on that but in case that doesn't pan out...is there anyway I can buy the HP blu-ray drive myself from somewhere online and then get it swapped out on my own? I would of course want it to match my machine, I wouldn't want to just get any drive. Also my video card is the GeForce 320M but from what I've read this supports blu-ray as well, yes?
HP/Compaq :: DV7T Quad-Intel Drivers Refusing To Install
Feb 21, 2010I'm trying to install:
1.) Intel turbo boost technology driver (for i7 processors) and...
2.) Intel management engine driver
I keep getting an error message telling me that my hardware doesn't meet the minimum system requirements to install the software...which makes no sense! I've already installed the Intel chipset driver and the intel rapid storage driver AKA matrix storage driver. These two must be installed before installing the ones that are refusing to install.
I called HP, got India and the guy insists just because the driver is listed for my product doesn't mean it needs to be installed. I just kinda laughed it off, he was useless.
So I did a google search on the problem and it seems a lot of people are having the same problem getting these two drives to install-same error message and everything.
any info on IF they really need to be installed and if so, how the heck do you get them to install already?

Feb 28, 2010My specs: dv6t quad. i720M. 320M.
I just cleaned installed.
I already know the 320M Drivers are not yet release. Done.
But I can't find a way to install ANY driver I downloaded. None of them will install. Giving me message that there is no compatible hardware.
The only one that will install is from HP's website, but that only installs NVIDIA HD Audio. It doesn't install display drivers at all. W(T)F. Where is the display driver in that install?
I am stuck on the 1280x720 resolution and I cant go up to my native resolution at 1366x768.
I am tired of already spending countless hours downloading and searching for a driver that will work.
