How can disable my internal HDD from Bios version A08 of Inspiron 5423? I cannot find this option in the Bios. I'm trying to boot from an external usb HDD but it fails because of the OS installed in the internal HDD.

I currently have a Dell Inspiron 1720 with a second hard disk I bought and fitted myself. If I get a Studio 17, will I be able to fit this hard disk into the second bay in there? As far as I'm aware the disk itself should be okay, but the caddy might be slightly different for that model - is that right? If so I'll just buy a new caddy or modify this one - otherwise I'll be £100 down for this hard disk!

My wife has an on boot bios password and wanted to disable it. She asked me to do it because I work in IT so it shouldnt be a problem.
I logged in with her password. Went security, user password, Press enter, typed in existing one then new password blank and confirmed it with another blank password. Rebooted and now it prompts for a password and we are stuffed.
Is this me being stupid did I do some thing wrong is that not the way to do it ?
Its appauling. We had a customer in work whos laptop was sent away to be sorted because he had the same problem. At the time I thought he was bit silly but now I can see how it could happen
I just got an older HP Pavilion G6 laptop and it has a bios password.  The guy that gave it to me gave a few passwords to try but none of them work.  After trying a few times i get this error message  "System Disable 66185300". How to bypass this error and get into the bios.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm thinking of buying a Thinkpad E540 with a discrete nvidia gpu. I am planning to install linux on it and I don't really need optimus for it (nor is it well supported) but I'd like to occasionally be able to use it on windows.
Â
I'd like to know if it's possible to completely turn off the nvidia gpu from the BIOS so it works only with the integrated intel one or should I buy one with intel gpu only.

I have read that the lenovo changed the dual gpu implementation on the latest generation thinkpads.
I've HP DV4-2165dx laptop and it's stuck on bios password .

PS: i know how to get to bios.
set a BIOS password on my HP DV8 1250 ea laptop a couple of years ago and now I cant remember what I set it too.

I want to install a fresh copy of windows 7, but cant as I locked down the BIOS and so cant boot from CD.

IF I enter tha password wrong 3 times I get the message "System Disable 5xxxxxx1"
I got this Notebook-PC in 2012 it is a G7 series I am fairly sure. My problem is that when I turn off the computer and turn it back on, there is no (esc) option to open bios menu or any option for that matter. Just a blue HP symble directly in the middle of the screen with a small loading symbol below it. I have pressed esc, f1-f10, and pretty much every other key to try to access it. All I really want to do is disable the most annoying f1-f12 function keys.
I am no longer under warranty and my operating system is Windows 8. There are also no error messages at all, just no response to anything just loads up to the password login screen.
Can't seem to find a latitude with the specs I want. Unfortunately, when I find it, the system is gone thats what I get for being slow. My question is if I call Dell, how is the pricing over the phone compare to online and would I be able to use a coupon over the phone?
View 10 Replies View RelatedI was doing some reading on the Inspiron Mini 9 and I understand that it uses a solid state drive in the form of a PCI-e card.
My question is, since the Mini 9 has three PCI-e slots, can you place an additional SSD in it? If you have the wireless LAN then the only other slot available is the Half mini.
I did some browsing and there are Half mini SSD's available. If one had an 8GB SSD could they purchase a 32GB for an 8GB+32GB configuration?
I got the Studio 1555 delivered to me two days back. Now I am thinking that I should have got two following additional upgrades:
1. Wifi 5300 card - I got the default 5100 one.
Should I upgrade to the wifi 5300 card? Will it be really worth it. I need to connect to my Wifi router for Internet. Will I be able to connect from more distance if I upgrade to the 5300?
2. HDD 320 7200 RPM - I got the 5400 RPM one.
Should I upgrade to the 7200 rpm and will it give better performance? Will games run better on the 7200 rpm one?
I found out my cause for shortened battery life
And, as I feared, it is connected to the Lenovo Ultrabay adapter
After careful analysis, I found out the reason - it looks like when the additional drive is connected via DVD SATA port, BIOS does not expose P-states correctly.
What happens then is Windows (or Linux for that matter) cannot scale frequencies down - your CPU will constantly run at the highest frequency!
As soon as I disconnect the additional drive, and run the Windows DDK PwrTest /infopm - I get normal values.
If the additional drive is connected, Windows sees only Throttle states!
This looks like some strange BIOS bug - I cannot possibly see connection between additional drive and CPU, except that something gets corrupted in the ACPI tables.
I am still investigating this, but as it seems right now we will have to choose between long battery life and another HDD/SSD drive.
You can also verify this even without PwrTest tool - just go to Task Manager and then to Resource Monitor, and then to "CPU" tab - if it says "100% maximum frequency" all the time, this means the P-state transitions do not work.
if it's possible to disable the Intel card completely and use NVIDIA directly through BIOS?
I'm trying to use Nvidia Nsight to debug shaders in OpenGL but Optimus/Switchable Graphics make things difficult for Nsight. At his point BIOS has just UMA and Switchable Graphics as options. But I've seen other laptops with a discrete graphics option. Is this model hardcoded to go through the Intel card anyway? Is there some other BIOS version that can add the option?
I just bought my new Z11 few days ago, had a mac book pro before.
Anyhow, mine has 128GB of SSD in a Raid 0 config, in the intel RST it says I have two spare open ports, and I know the upper signature series of the Z has quad SSD's so I'm wondering what harddrive expansion options I have?
Is it possible to swap out the current SSD with larger capacity ones? or possibly add on another 2 64 GB SSD for 256 total?
Just got a new HP Laptop dv7t and it comes with 4 partitions on the 320gb hard drive. I need to have the Windows 7 partitions divided for my OS and programs and then a new partition for Data.
I am only allowed 4 partitions (I do not want to use dynamic disks), currently there are two hp ones, recovery and hp tools and the two win7 partitions system and os (Win 7 Prof).
What does everyone do if they want to have an additional partition, delete recovery or hp tools?
E1-510 No Option for Additional RAM - I have currently 2GB RAM, I bought additional 2GB DDR3 to install it with current one. Once I opened the RAM compartment - its heart-breaking. I do have two slots for additional RAM, but clip (which holds RAM) is not there in second slot.

I've got a Dell Inspiron 1420 with XP, bought in Malaysia almost 5 years ago. It was working fine till a month ago when the keyboard and touchpad started malfunctioning. I used an external keyboard and mouse to over ride the problem but from time to time, it acts as if a button on the built in keyboard is being pressed (for instance ctrl on the laptop is being held down so when I type the letter "f" on the external keyboard, I end up opening the Search tool). I don't know the internal mechanism of this laptop, but is there a way I could disable the laptop's keyboard and touchpad, and continue functioning only through the USB external keyboard and mouse? I tried uninstalling the drivers.

Can not find the way to do that. How do I install new fonts ?
I have russian system (Windows 7 SP1 with all updates on Inspiron N5050) and corresponding Dell software (on russian), but I'll try to describe options, like they be on english. You should to determine appropriate, corresponding to english analogues.
In the battery settings there is one checkbox, like "disable battery charge", with description, pointing to battery charge disabling until next Windows boot. So, if I check that checkbox, then...
Which EXACTLY system event(s) or situation(s) (the most comprehensive list) triggers the charger back to charge the battery, because "next Windows boot" is too unclear. For example, what about hibernate mode? Precisely, returning from it is not the Windows boot! In which moment of boot that trigger changes? Which system event(s) (application and/or hardware) generates initial command for it, what chain of devices and software calls involved (and can or can't be involved in different situations), how much time approximately consumes each chain link, and mention all affecting hardware settings and Windows settings.
