I have never set up a hdd password but someone did on my Dell laptop Inspiron 17. I can't get past this and don't know how to disable or reset or clear this requirement. I can get into Setup but can't do anything without satisfying the hdd password requirement.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to sort out my girlfriends inspiron which is running v v slowly (loads of spyware, viruses etc). I really wanted to do I fresh installation of XP but my girlfriend thinks she threw away the relevant cd ('well, I've never needed any of those cds before!).
I've rung Dell UK but its out of warranty so they wont send a new one. Currently on hold to technical support to see how much it will be to order a new one (15 mins so far!).
However, I was wondering whether there is any easier/cheaper way to get the recovery cd? I think I have a friend with a normal XP home cd but this would be difficult to get hold of plus I assume I would have to find all the drivers (don't want to spend too much time on this). Another alternative which was suggested was to do a System Restore but when I load it up it only allows me to select dates from October (the only restore point in October is one I created a few days ago before I started trying to uninstall a load of stuff).
how to get hold of this cd?
My new inspiron 13 was ghosting and I calibrated the touch screen and now the right hand menu does not appear when I swipe.

I've had this computer (Inspiron N5110, Windows 7) for about 9 months and it's been great until now. The touchpad is now super sensitive and the cursor seems to go anywhere it wants, probably because my palms barely brush it when I'm typing but I usually feel like I am not touching it at all. It will open whatever the cursor is hovering over, even when I don't click it. I tried to find the settings for the touchpad under Control Panel>Mouse but there is nothing for the touch pad.Am I just not looking in the right spot for the settings?

Today when I wanted to access my BIOS settings, I found out that I had already set one. It has been more than a year since I last accessed my BIOS. Now what the pass-code is. I looked up Google on how to recover the pass-code and none of it worked. A post I read on Microsoft said to ask the computer manufacturer if there is a "universal pass-code" ( something like that ) so that I can use it to access the BIOS and then reset the pass-code.
If you cannot seem to get a universal pass-code, I'm open to other methods on how to reset the BIOS pass-code.
I have lost my performance and maintenance system in the control panel, and I would like to know how to retrieve it or replace it for free.
I like to use the sleep and hibernate on my laptop but I need to get the performance.
Inspiron 15z Ultrabook, Windows 8, DELL System Recovery.
I have an external Seagate Expansion Drive 2TB and had backup files on it. I created a new partition by shrinking the E: volume and made F: to use for the DELL System Recovery.
I selected the F: partition when asked what drive to use. I was 100% certain E: would never chosen during any steps in the process. After it finished I looked in Computer and found both partitions had been formatted and a DBR_Boot placed in both. Yet E: (where personal files were stored) is basically empty other than what appears to be a boot up capability and F: has the recovery files.
Why has this happened? I need those files. Is there a way to reverse the process or will file recovery software be needed in an attempt to regain those files?
I can't believe this hasn't happened to other people, must be a common occurrence. What I could do to recover lost files.

I also wanted to install a new OS (windows 8). Upon turning it on after the wipe it requests a HDD Password. To my knowledge I never set one. Is there a way around this, specifically, not having to pay for one?

I first called about a bios password that was given but after it was erased the bios that is now i am being presented with a hdd lock 3 times and it shuts off no error code this is not a 595b legacy system i am familiar with dell but this is more work then requesting a carrier subsidy unlock.

Everytime I boot up the laptop, I get halted with the blue box asking me for the bios password.
I know this laptop is quite different and that even removing the cmos battery for like a day is not going to help. There is no 24xxx chip that I can short on the mobo.
Then I found SST39VF040 bios chip on the back of the mobo and also found a 93lc86 bios chip too .....
I replaced the hard drive in a Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop with a new one. The old hard drive wouldn't boot and failed several Dell hard drive diagnostic tests.
Now a message pops up when the laptop is powered on, "Hard-disk #***********-595B, the system primary HDD is protected by a password authentication system..."
I am repairing this laptop for a client of mine. I don't remember a password prompt before replacing the old hard drive, but now the laptop won't even let me enter SETUP without entering a password.
I need to recover my Dell Inspiron 600m administrator password. I called Dell and their advice was to buy a new hard drive. I can log on with my user name and I can get email....but at a snail's pace. I am unable to do maintenance or download updates without that administrator password.
