Dell Inspiron 1720 :: Will Not Boot With 2nd HDD Installed
Jun 17, 2012
Wife's 1720 originally came with one 250GB SATA HDD running Vista Business 32-bit. I decided to upgrade it and have bought Windows 7 Home Premium and 2 SATA SSDs. A 60GB Intel 520 series SSD is placed in HDD bay 1 and a 120GB Intel 330 series SSD is placed in HDD bay 2.
When I powered it up with the windows 7 disc, the machine will not boot up at all. After the initial bios screen with the progress bar, it just goes to a black screen with a blinking cursor. I cannot go to bios by pressing F2 nor into boot menu by pressing F12.
I eventually decided to remove the 120 GB SSD and this time, it booted up and installed Windows 7 on the 60B SSD. After installation and driver updates and reboots, I shut it down and re-installed the 120GB SSD. I selected F2 during boot and inspected the BIOS. It has detected both SSDs so I exited the BIOs and Windows 7 booted up without issues. I then formatted the 120GB with simple volume and then transfered wife's data from her old 250GB HDD (now in a Nexstar external case) to the 120GB HDD.
After installing some additional apps and McAfee AV, I restarted it. However, it is failing to boot again. Same old thing. Cannot go into BIOS by pressing F2 and cannot go into boot menu by pressing F12. I have not removed the 120GB SSD yet to see if it is causing the issue.

I bought for my dell 1526 a kit of 4gb ddr2 667mhz (2 x 2 gb) but the problem is that the laptop does not boot with the ram kit installed.I tried to use only one module of 2 gb and is the same thing. It powers up and stays with the power led on and does nothing.I tried a separate 1 gb module and the laptop works fine. Can it be that the ram is bad or incompatible?

I installed the FX2500M upgrade on Monday, and last night I did a reapplication of the AS5 on the cpu, and when I put everything back in and booted back up....NOTHING!!! The screen was very very dim, although the image was visible, which made me first think it was a power issue with the lcd display. Plugged in an external monitor, picture comes out fine, but i8kfangui can't read the GPU's temp anymore?
So I chat with the infamous people over at Dell, and to my surprise, within 10 minutes they promise a replacement display. I think my problems are solved.
But just for kicks, I throw in my old ATI Radeon X1400 in and lo and behold....the big DELL BIOS logo pops up, bright and beautiful! Everything is back to normal, except now I don't have the wonderful graphics performance that my FX2500M was giving me.
Now I'm absolutely lost...how could the FX2500M be producing a dim image on the laptop display if it outputs perfectly to an external monitor? I find no correlation between the back light of the lcd display and the output of the GPU, especially if another gpu works fine.

I just bought the Thinkpad e530 with the 1tb+16 or so ssd cache harddrive. I decieded i wanted a ssd instead, so I bought a Samsung SSD 840 Series. - but since I removed the old 1tb harddrive and installed the ssd, I cant get it to boot. In bios I changed the boot priority so it looks like this when I get to the boot menu:
Â
ATA HDD0: Samsung SSD 840 Series
Windows Boot Manager
Windows Boot manager
ATAPI CD0: PLDS DVD-RW DS8A8SH
ATA HDD2: SanDisk SSD U100 16 gb
PCI LAN
Â
When I press enter on the SSD, nothing happens. When i press enter on the DVD, the screen goes black and then back to boot menu (the DVD is a installation for windows 7 of my own. There were any CDs with the lenovo) When I press enter on the first Windows boot manager, screen goes black and then back to boot menu. When I press enter on the second windows boot manager it give the error message with the status: 0xc0000225 (something with newly change of hardware or software). Its the same message when i press on the HDD2.
Â
How can I get it to boot up so i can boot the DVD so I can install windows on my SSD?Â

I'm trying to figure this out. I've done some searches and googled some more but to no avail.
I recently migrated over from PC so I might be having a harder time than some.
Anyway, I installed Windows XP Pro SP3 without a hitch. After installing it, I tried to remove the CD in order to install my bootcamp drivers. No luck. I tried right clicking CD drive and then eject, no luck. I tried all other possible methods in Windows to eject it, no luck.
I ended rebooting and holding down the trackpad and it finally ejected. Anyway, my hope was that installing bootcamp will help the issue but it didnt. When I'm in Windows and holding down the eject button, I would see the eject graphics pop up on screen, but nothing comes out. HOwever, the CD drive reads without a problem.
Any other things that I can do? Am I required to use SP2 when installing? Also, everything is fine in Mac OS.

I have been working on computers for almost 20 years and this has me completely confused. My Aspire V3-571-6643 laptop was working fine until just recently. The system will power on and show the Acer screen and then immediately reboots. It will stay in this reboot loop until manually stopped.
Â
I cleaned and reseated the RAM module and also tried it in both slots with no change. I was able to access BIOS and determined the drives and all settings are correct and even reset to factory defaults with no change. I then pulled the HDD to use in a docking station to determine if the drive was salvagable. Everything reads fine and passed both short and long tests via SeaTools. With the HDD installed the system won't try to boot to CD/USB but after removing it the system will boot to CD just fine. I then ran a full scan using Eurosoft Pc-Check and everything is fine. I reinstalled the HDD and immediately get the reboot loop again.
Â
At this point the mainboard and HDD both test fine independently but will not work together. My only guess is that the mainboard is no longer supplying enough power for all of the components and crashing when the HDD tries to spin up on boot. That, or the SATA controller is malfunctioning and only working for the ODD.

I have upgraded the OS to Win 7 Home Premium, 32 bit, and had the hard drive upgraded to a 320 GB SATA drive. The system will boot flawlessly with the SATA drive installed, it will not boot with the 500Gb Samsung 840 EVO SSD drive installed.
Â
When the power button is pressed the power light lights up, the hard drive activity light lights up, the CPU cooling fan comes on, the DVD drive light comes on and you hear a couple of clicks then it turns off.
Â
Is there a special setting in BIOS that needs to be made or is this notebook simply unable to use an internal SSD drive?

I have done a search on this so forgive me if its been addressed already. I found no answers.
I have seen taht a number of Inspiron 1720s have the 8600m GT card in them with 512 mb of memory, while others such as mine have the same card, but with 256mb memory on them.
I'm getting ready to start doing some photoshop work as well as some CAD work. I'm going to start my engineering degree as soon as I finish my current degree. Would this increase in memory help out in what I will be doing?
Will it also help in gaming? I pretty much use this laptop for everything and am trying to learn what I can about it so I fully understand it's capabilities and such.

I am stuck looking at a black screen. Also, when closing the lid I am unable to open the lid and restore my previous session.
Although I am not sure if this is directly related but it seems to only deter me from restoring the session if the computer has been plugged in, otherwise the laptop comes back exactly as it was.
I have tried reinstalling the video driver twice, both times doing a complete clear and removing all registries tied to them

I was bored tonight so I ran some benchmarks on my 1720, Specs in Sig
Only change was the GPU was overclocked.
1st Pic is 3DMark @ stock clocks.--------3449
2nd Pic is 3DMark Overclocked-----------4366 Old 4259, 4271, 4280
3rd Pic is Vantage @ stock clocks--------P1115
4th Pic is Vantage Overclocked-----------P1457 Old P1410
I didnt get time to finish a Vantage run on my last set oc clocks since it needed tweaking due to display driver crashes. GPU temps never reached higher the 67*C when overclocked

anyone run a benchmark utility such as Lavalys Everest or Sisoft Sandra or similar to tell me the name of the manufacturer of the Firewire chipset in the Inspiron 1720 please? Not the motherboard or CPU chipset, just the firewire component of the laptop, please.
The benchmark software is free, and they tell you what components are inside your particular computer.
Reason I'm asking is that I have an external firewire soundcard (for professional music recording), and for maximum compatibility the soundcard manufacturer recommends the soundcard only be used with certain firewire chipsets.

The set up are as follows:
T9300
8600M GT
320GB 7200rpm x2 (640GB)
6GB RAM
(4GB G.Skill and 2GB Kingston memory) both PC2-5300 @ 5-5-5-15
Ultimate 64
1920x1200
A09 BIOS
Purchase of RAM
The 4GB RAM Module is purchased from newegg. Unfortunately, newegg doesn't ship products to Singapore, so I had to use Vpost (Vpost gave a US address and everything)... Then Vpost will ship it to Singapore.
This is a follow up thread from Does the Inspiron 1520 Support 8Gigs and How to upgrade your M1530 to 6GB of RAM
Installation procedure:
As usual, I only installed the RAM on DIMM A. I have not tested it on DIMM B, not too sure if it works or even to the extent of the BIOS or mobo detecting it.
UPDATED (Friday, Oct 3, 2008; 11:52am): DIMM B also works. See this screenshot for details.
I got myself a black keyboard. Just ignore it. No, it's not an Inspiron E1705 people. My friend from the UK (Migrated here, now living in Singapore) didn't want his Vostro 1700 anymore, so for no reason, he gave me the keyboard.
As usual, open the hinge cover and gain access to the DIMM A RAM underneath the keyboard. Instructions can be found here: [url]
Make sure you slot it properly into the slot...
Once fixed, especially the keyboard and hinge, boot into your BIOS to double check it. Here, it is written as 6142MB.
Also, make sure you're using the latest A09 BIOS released from Dell.
Testing
Things just don't stop here. Just because it "sees" or, "detects" 6GB of RAM, doesn't necessarily mean we can assume that the 6GB will be utilized because, it is widely stated that the 1720 cannot support more than 4GB of RAM, and so as most Santa Rosa machines. The same goes for the others. Here, I did some interesting "Mythbusters" style tests... I got lots of drawings and graphics that I do everyday, like 3DS Max and all those workstation stuff. But specifically, I am going to launch 2 of the most vicious RAM eaters out there. They're non other than Photoshop and Corel PhotoPaint.
Tuesday 8 Oct 2008 11:17am UPDATE: VMWare Workstation v6.5 will be tested!! This will really help to see if there's a performance boost with 6GB RAM installed, and be utilized..............................

So I've had the laptop since Aug 2007, works great, specs in sig. Only have one problem with it. the laptop likes to punish me. It shocks me. Literally shocks me. I think it's where the paint as worn off on the base. Around the corners, the bottom, ect. If I have it on my lap I need to make sure I don't wear shorts. I can feel a slight amount of electricity sting my legs, or forearms. It's a slight stinging sensation. Anyone else experience this? It's been going on for a little while. I thinking the only fix would be to A) repaint it or B) get a new base for it. Don't really want to repaint it as it might look crappy. Other than HDD issues from time to time, I've never had a problem with it and it's still my main computer.
Anyone else encounter this? Could it be that I have a pinched wire thats exposed and making contact with the base? If any, I think it would be the monitor wires, I seem to recall them being nicked and exposed.

After putting up with countless BSOD's and failed harddrives on the Inspiron 1720, they send me a refurbished Studio 1747. Bigger hard drive space, HD screen, and twice the ram are very enticing to keep this machine. But the Inspiron's GPU AND CPU processors are faster (compare Intel Core i7 720QM processor and ATI Mobility Radeon 4650 graphics to the dual 2.0GHz centrino duo nvidia geforce 8600m GT). And I also found it silly that they would include an HD screen but not a blue-ray disc reader. So since DELL told me over the warranty phone line that they would "match the specs of your [my] old computer," should I just keep this or run some benchmarks on some games and figure this out? I don't want to spend more time on this if I have to if it is common knowledge that I got a good ad deal.
edit: forgot to add that the studio runs windows 7 64bit and inspiron is running w7 32 bit

I have a bit of a query in regards to the temperature of the Inspiron 1720 (Specs in sig) especially when under heavy loads, e.g. Gaming.
The laptop is designed for gaming as far as I know due to it containing a rather powerful graphics card (Nvidia 8600M GT), however when playing a game such as Left 4 Dead I have seen the temperature of the CPU peak at 91 Degrees..
I was just wondering if this is normal as I've heard reports that high temperatures going up and over 100 degrees would most certainly degrade the internal components...

lately my Inspiron 1720 has been running crazy hot, and overheating (actually shutting down) while playing games (specifically Sacred 2).
For example right now I am only running Firefox and HWMonitor, and here is an excerpt from the HWMonitor report:
Intel Mobile Core 2 Duo T5750 hardware monitor
Temperature sensor 070°C (157°F) [0xF] (core #0)
Temperature sensor 175°C (166°F) [0xA] (core #1)
In fact shortly after saving that report, my computer actually shut down from heat. I have since restarted it and it is currently running at a roughly constant 52C.
The CPU gets into the 70s and overheats a lot when playing Sacred 2. However, strangely even after closing that game the temperature doesn't come down, such as what happened above .....

So after the last couple years in school, my speakers are shot. I have an inspiron 1720 and was wondering how hard it is to change out the speakers.
I was looking around and found these: http://www.parts-people.com/index.ph...n=item&id=4807. I looked through the manual and couldnt find a tutorial on how to change the speakers or get to them or anything.

I purchased CT699854 4GB kit (2GBx2), 200-pin SODIMM from Crucial.com for my Dell Inspiron 1720 laptop. The machine already had 2GB in two 1GB chips for both slots.
When I installed the new chips, Windows Vista Home Premium refused to boot. BIOS recognized the new RAM without problems, but when Windows started to load I immediately got a 0x7b stop error. This is strange, because that usually coincides with an AHCI problem, but that's already turned on in the BIOS with Turbo Memory and works fine.
When I take ONE of those 2GB chips out, leaving an empty DIMM slot, it boots fine. When I use one new 2GB chip in conjunction with one of the old 1GB chips, it boots fine and Vista recognizes 3GB of RAM. But when I push it to 4GB, I get the 0x7b BSoD. I've used all combinations of new and old chips, and it appears the new chips aren't bad as far as I can tell.
