Dell Inspiron 15 3521 :: Battery Would Not Charge - Press F1 To Continue Or F2 To Enter Setup
Jan 17, 2015I have a Dell Inspiron 15 3521 which, until recently, was working fine.
This morning I, after a rebooted, I got an error message informing me that the battery would not charge and to press f1 to continue or f2 to enter setup. I continued and booted into Windows fine but noticed it wasn't charging, I rebooted to see if the error message would go away. It didn't.
I booted into the BIOS, loaded the "optimized defaults" and rebooted only to be greeted by the same error message.
There were quite a few posts with similar issues, so I tried a couple of the solutions to see if any of them would work(updating the BIOS to A12, rebooting with the battery removed and then replacing it, deleting the two driver under batteries in device manager, etc.), but none of them resulted in the battery charging though the error message went away.
After playing around with it for a while, I noticed the following behavior.
1. Initially, in the BIOS, it said something like "Your battery is temporarily disabled, please turn off your computer and try again when the unit is back to operational temperature" . After removal/reboot/re-adding, it reports it as healthy.
2. The AC adapter is reported as unknown when the battery is plugged in. If I remove the battery, it is reported as 65W. Adding the battery results in it reporting as "unknown" again.
3. If I am in Windows with the battery plugged in and not charging(as reported by windows) and I remove the AC adapter from the socket in the wall and plug it in again, the green light on the power brick glows for 5 or so seconds and the icon in the system tray shows charging. Unfortunately, it then turns off a few seconds later and the icon shows it running only on battery power.
I've seen quite a few of these posts, so I'm not expecting a definitive answer. As of right now, I'm running with just the AC adapter plugged in and the battery removed. It works "fine" this way.
NOTE: This seemed to coincide with a run of windows update. Prior to that, it was working correctly running on a fresh install of Windows 8.1 . Either that, or it was just a coincidence.
Dell Inspiron 3521 :: BIOS Password Lockout
Jan 19, 2015I have a friend whose father owned an Inspiron 15 - 3521 and died several months ago. Another friend of his tried to unlock the user password and somehow ended up screwing it up more, so now it boots asking for a BIOS password that no one has access too. He doesn't have the receipt for the computer, because his dead father was the owner but he does have the box. Its warranty is expired as well, but I was wondering if having the box was enough for Dell to generate a BIOS bypass or what other options are available.

I have setup this brand new laptop, pre-installed with Windows 8.1, for my sister-in-law who bought it. The installation went well BUT the 16GB USB device which I purchased as advised by the Acer literature to store the recovery partition was not big enough, the physical capacity being 14.4GB. The Acer book says use a 16GB device or larger so I did. I naively thought that a USB drive which was labelled 16GB would be appropriate. Not so. I have had to buy a larger one but am still awaiting delivery.
I therefore decided to image the whole HDD to save the work I had done but found that the Acronis Backup and Recovery DVD would not boot. I went into the setup utility and adjusted the Boot settings to legacy and changed device priority. Acronis would not run so I did not continue. I went back into the setup utility, used F9 to restore the default and found to my astonishment that the DUAL boot option had now disappeared and the Windows Boot option had also vanished.
This means that this £800 laptop is now unusable. The setup utility self-reconfigured without warning. Nowhere is there any advice or warning not to use the setup utility in case it erases features which cannot be recovered by using F9 to recover the default configuration. If this is not a serious design fault, I don't know what is.
I am deeply worried because the idea of a BIOS setup utility behaving this way seems so improbable. How is it that the setup utility has been designed to self-harm like this?

Dell XPS 17 L702X :: Cannot Enter BIOS Setup
Feb 5, 2015I have recently been completely unable to access the set-up area of my bios on my Dell XPS 17 L702x laptop. On booting, i keep pressing the F2 key which seems to be registered by the BIOS as the text that says 'Set-Up' lights up. However, instead of entering the setup, the BIOS simply continues booting my operating system. Even if I remove all of the hard drive's, I cannot enter the set up and the BIOS boots to the PXE Setup.
I have tried reflashing the BIOS but nothing changes, the set-up is still inaccessible. I can't even change the boot order using the F12 key.
I really need access to my BIOS and I am all out of options.

Nov 20, 2012I just bought an Edge 130 and wanted to set it up today. But I just can't enter the BIOS! I keep pressing F1 during the Lenovo splash screen. I've pressed it repeatedly, held it down, I even tried it with the Fn button pressed. Nothing worked.
I've have been working with and professionally supporting Lenovo (and before IBM) notebooks for over 10 years and not once did I have such a problem. This is only the second E-series notebook I have ever had. I bought myself an E525 last summer and had no such problems and at work we have T-, X- and W-series.

Jul 4, 2012My machine is Lenovo Z580 with Windows 7. Some time ago I accidentally installed Linux Mint on my whole HDD, so all the partitions and files (including recovery partition) were erased. I then installed back Windows 7 and partitioned the HDD.
However, since the incident, I'm unable to enter BIOS. I'd like to change boot sequence, because the laptop wants to boot from network, displays an error, and then boots from HDD and Windows 7 starts. I can access boot manager with F12 during boot, and the entries are (those aren't the exact names of course, except the first one):
1. ubuntu <- yes, that's how it's called. I guess it's a remnant of Linux Mint installation
2. booting from network
3. booting from HDD
4. booting from DVD
5. booting from USB
I tried the following things:
1. pressing F2 at boot. it used to work before the incident, now the laptop ignores it and proceeds to attempting boot from network, displays an error, and then boots from HDD.
2. using Novo button instead of power button, then choosing "BIOS setup" option - the laptop still proceeds to boot OR displays black screen and need to be shut down
3. removing boot entries using Ubuntu via USB stick [URL] ..... - I can't remove any entry, because after using
>efibootmgr -v
no list appears, and when I enter
>efibootmgr -B -b 001
or any other number, I get an error that the entry wasn't found.
I can't flash BIOS because Lenovo didn't provide the necessary file for this model. I also can't sent the laptop to repair because my warranty period ended two months ago.
So, I flashed the file attached here: [URL] .... and everything works now! the "ubuntu" entry has been automatically deleted and I was able to access BIOS and change the boot order.
Before installing ... write down MAC address of your LAN card, because it'll get deleted after BIOS update!
1. press windows key+R, type cmd and press Enter.....
2. in the opened command window, type ipconfig /all and press Enter, find the entry regarding your Ethernet connection and write down the physical address....
3. Flash BIOS update
4. After reboot follow this guide: [URL] .....
