Dell Latitude D810 :: Multiport Communications Port (COM3)
Jan 8, 2008
Had to reformat a Latitude D810 and reinstall XP OS. Since all drivers were wiped from drive I downloaded them from Dell Support. Have one (1) remaining device in Device Manager with yellow exclamation mark on it labeled Multiport Communications Port (COM3). Cannot find any driver in Dell Support that correlates to this device.Â

I recently got a dell M4400 and large external dell monitor. I purchased the e-port replicator. I should be able to dock my laptop and use an external monitor and keyboard/mouse.
I can do that, but when I shut my laptop, the whole thing shuts down. Is this correct? I know I've used docking stations in the past and didn't have to have the laptop open. If I do, what is the point of the docking station?
The E-Port replicator had pretty much no documentation. Also, when I dock my laptop, shouldn't it see the docking station?

Im starting a thread b/c many people seem to be experiencing some issues with their Latitude while docked.
Some of my problems (keep in mind I use TWO external displays):
1) Most prevalent is my fan issue. This might only apply to nVidia GPU users. It appears that two things are happening: a) the dock simply does not allow for proper heat dissipation.
This for me is a fact as my laptop runs both cooler and, utlizes much lower fan speeds while undocked. b) DELL may have set the fans to kick in at lower temps particularly with the nvidia gpu

3 different Latitude D810's that we wanted to add some life to. So we purchased 3 SSD drives,
two 64GB IDE/ATA Transcend MLC based units and 1 RiData 16GB SLC IDE/ATAunit. (Yes, the SLC is far faster with writing than the MLC drives).
Using our standard image, everything works fine. Except when removing the power cord from the back of the unit, it goes to a black screen, any hard drive (SSD drive) activity ceases.
When doing the same thing with a traditional hard drive, the screens blip black for a brief moment, but the computer keeps running as expected.

I’m about to get a 6800go in a couple of weeks, and I’m going to almost hate messing with something that has served me so well. I’m only a gamer on my Desktop, so I don’t know what the 6800go will bring me different than what I already have. I get 90fps in low setting playing Quake 4 already, so I guess the only thing I’ll gain there is the shadowing and maybe 90fps on medium settings? One more thing might be a turn on is playing COD4 on the laptop now, but the 15” screen on the D810 just can’t add up to the 2007FP of my Desktop.
So since I have time before I actually get the card, I want to know what you think of the 6800go and what fun it might bring me over my x600? Right now I can play FEAR, Quake 4 and Counter Strike with no problems, could be RAM related since I have 2GB.
I just need something to do to pass the wait time, so let it roll!
If there's any special drivers I need,

Windows 7 32-bit upgrade CD (not SP1), from XP. no anti-virus yet. Windows Updates current to SP1.I have always had my DELL mouse plugged in to rear port, but for unknown reasons it is now dead to all USB devices?
Mouse is now recognized by side USB port, but I like to keep them free for bulky flash drives..I tried uninstalling all ports/refresh from Device Manager, but rear port is still dead to all USB devices.I then tried a repair install from desktop, but still dead (1st time HD light flashed for 1sec, then nothing from then on).

Just started using brand new Latitude E7240 and connected to E-port docking station. When booting an error pops up as below: The battery currently attached to the system will not supply enough power to dock for it to function. Please attach AC power to the dock for it to function normally
F1 - continue
F2- change setup options
The Laptop and the dock stations are brand new. This is only happening with the 7240's.

I have a Latitude e6510 display port. The graphics card that came with the laptop is Nvidia NVS 3100M.
My display port does not output. External screen just says <No video signal>
The Nvidia control panel can also not see any other monitors.
I have tried this with multiple displays. I have updated to the latest drivers for everything including Nvidia.I ran the scan system for driver updates utility from Dell.
How do I get the display port to start outputting. Is there some special driver that is needed?

This notebook has been out for a while, and I’m sure the stuff I want to do now have already been done. So…I’m hoping for some good answers, so I can pursue the things I want to do with my old trusty. Considering I don’t have any other CPU right now, please leave out the pin mod option at this time. I’m trying to work with what I have right now,
First I would like to “Overclock” the CPU (Pentium M 740), so let me know when, what, where and which programs you’ve used to overclock this particular model. Will do the overclocking first, to see if I want to shell out something on a Pentium M 770
Now that the most important part of what I want to do is out of the way; would an x1800 work in my notebook?

The USB ports on my new E Port II docking are not working with my new Latitude E7240 Laptop. Full configuration of the laptop is below. Talked with Dell and they sent me a replacement docking station but the same issue surfaced. Looked at the Device Manager and no extra USB ports show up when connected to the docking station. The side laptop USB works fine when the docking station is connected.

when I dock my in my E-port docking station, my CPU usage will shoot up to 100%, and it may come down periodically to the 80s or 90s, which makes my laptop virtually unusable for anything. I tried a different power cord but it made no difference. Undocked, it works just fine, so it's obvious it's something wrong with the docking station.

We are running more than200 dell computers in our company. lately we purchased E7240 for some users but it looks like the AC adapter does not work with the Dell E-Port docking station we have and that cause the USB hubs not to function at all.
Currently the workaround is to plug the AC adapter to the laptop instead of the docking station.
Our BIOS is updated to the latest version. also a message comes up when the ac adapter connected to the docking station before the windows boot up saying the ac adapter won't charge.....

I installed Windows 7 64 bit on a Dell E4200.I had two yellow exclamation points in device manager for unknown devices.
PCI Serial Port
PCI Simple Communications
I went to Dell support site and to the drivers and downloads page for my Service Tag.Under the Chipset section there is an Intel driver for AMT HECI.  Installing that driver solved the PCI Simple Communications item.
Also under Chipset there is an Intel driver AMT SOL.  I installed that driver but the PCI Serial Port was still showing Unknown with the Yellow..In my case I had to then manually Update the driver as follows:
Open Device Manager > right click on PCI Serial Port and choose Update driver > choose Browse my computer and browse to the driver folder for the AMT SOL just created when you downloaded and installed the driver mentioned above.  Location for me is C:DellDriversR279202.

One of my users brought me this issue the other day. He is using a Latitude D830 laptop with a D/port docking station. With or without the laptop docked, The power button on the docking station flashes Orange and Green when powered.   I've swapped power bricks for the dock.  The laptop still seems to charge while being docked.  After swapping the dock, the new dock is fine.
What might be causing it? Is the dock dead? Could it be a failed port on the docking station?

I downloaded all the drivers at Dell Product Support Website. Everything worked OK except that on my Device Manager, I am missing one driver, that is for PCI Simple Communications Controller, any link where I could download the driver?

I just rebuilt my HP ENVY 15-j145tx Notebook PC to Windows 8.1 Professional but under other Devices, I am having two problems. One is a 'PCI Simple COmmunications Controller' in error with the following descriptions:
Â

And secondly it is showing one 'unknown device' under Other devices. Although I have checked the entire HP driver site dedicated for this laptop but I can't figure out what device drivers to install in order to resolve these issue.

Thinking about getting one to go with my m4500 which is on order. Reviews seem ok though some complain it's bulky and other complained the release mechanism wasn't great. Worst was that someone said their comp wouldn't boot when docked.
Can anyone share experience and/or high res pics of what one looks like?

Here's my story and, let's say, my analysis:
I bought a generic 2 HD sata2 RAID1 enclosure based on the chipset Silicon Image SteelVine 5744. It can be used in USB or eSATA2. This embedded chipset (named SiL5744) is known (understand "claimed") to auto-handle Sata I/II and host sata2 controllers that not support the port multiplier feature. The HD are two Samsung F1 1To. There's no jumper to rollback to SATA 1.5Go on them, you can only do it by flashing the HD's bios, however we don't need to do it as I wrote just before, the SiL5744 supports SATA 3Go natively.
The enclosure works pretty well with USB, but *not* in eSATA : the E6500 freezes/hangs just after the POST step (a potential driver issue with the installed vista 64bits is not the reason then). As soon has I disconnect the eSATA cable, the system recovers and continues as normal.
What I've tried/done so far :
Both E6500's BIOS SATA mode AHCI and IRRT mode were tested,
Intel Matrix driver and software was updated to the latest 8.7.0.1007 version (AHCI and IRRT),
The SiL5744 chip was upgraded to its latest firmware as well (in case of...)
In order to verify the esata cable, the HDs and the enclosure itself, I succeed to :
- Use the enclosure's RAID1 feature when using the USB connection, I could partition, format, and read/write on the logical volume
- directly connect *one* HD (Samsung F1 1To) to the E6500's esata port -(I have a sata2esata cable), Vista installed it and I was able to use it as normal, even the hotswap feature seemed to work fine (I unkindly removed it). I could so test both HD individually this way... On the enclosure hardware side, everything looks fine then.
An IMPORTANT thing : The E6500's ICH8/9-M sata host controller seems to support the Port Multiplier feature *ONLY* on sata port 0 -as a bubble message from the Intel Matrix soft sometimes shows up-, but this is exactly where the internal HD is plugged on the motherboard I found nowhere you can change the internal sata port ID (switch,bios,ect...). I think this is the key of the problem that seems to be a dumb port conflict, because the esata port is in fact the port sata 4 (the DVDRW drive is sata 1, dock's esata is 5 for instance). If somebody knows how to swap the sata port ID, I think I won't be toasted !

The price of 2nd user Latitude D630's seems to be holding up quite well in the UK. Does this indicate that it is still a popular machine and favoured over the E6400?
I briefly checked out an E6400 the other day and for a choice between machines of approximately similar spec I would opt for the D630 rather than the newer E6400.
I would be interested in opinions from users who have experience with both models.
