Mar 25, 2009At the request of some of the people on this site, I am posting a couple of pics of the bottom of my E6400.
Reason being, some would like to see if DELL has changed anything with regard to the thermals as this unit (T9400/Nvidia 160m) is finally running at a consistently cool temp, without the fan constantly going haywire (docked, with two external monitors).
Dell Latitude E6400 :: Running Extremely Warm Especially When Video Is Playing
Nov 28, 2014The grill on the left side of my Latitude E6400 gets extremely warm--especially when video is playing. The bottom side of the case, on the left side, gets very warm, as well. I've been able to confirm that the fan behind the grill on the bottom side *does* run periodically; however, the grill and underside remain very warm.
How warm? Right now, after playing a video for about 15 minutes, SpeedFan reports the following temperatures: GPU (162F), HD0 (109F), Temp1 (145F), Core 0 (140F), Core 1 (142F). All of the items except HD0 have a flame icon--indicating an abnormally-high temperature. Worse, I've seen the temperatures considerably higher than the above.
I've had this laptop for about five years. The latest BIOS and drivers are installed. It's working OK, otherwise. This problem started, suddenly, perhaps a year ago.
Dell :: The Best Notebook Cooler Option For E6400/ E6500
Oct 5, 2008I'm looking to get a notebook cooler for my E6400, as I am sure some other are considered or have taken advantage of. So, I want to find out one that is going to work the best.
I am considering the following:
- Zalman ZM-NC1000, said to be really quiet and effective. From what I gather blows air up at the notebook
- Antec notebook cooler, also supposed to be quite effective. This one I think sucks away the hot air from the notebook
Now the question is, what is going to be the better choice? I think the fan on the E6400/ E6500 blows hot air out of the notebook right? In which case the cooler that then helps in taking that away would be best?
Dell :: XPS Blank Screen On Startup But Computer Running?
Apr 22, 2009Basically, turned off my computer yesterday, and I turned it back on today, and it opens the dell loading screen, then the vista loading screen, then the screen goes blank, but the light is on but nothing appears on screen,
I also can hear the vista opening music from when the sign in page opens........
also when I boot in safe mode it works perfectly with no problems ??

Apr 22, 2009My fan runs after the lid closes and I put it directly in its case for class. Its in an enclosed area and doesn't get proper ventilation that way.

Jun 19, 2009The price of 2nd user Latitude D630's seems to be holding up quite well in the UK. Does this indicate that it is still a popular machine and favoured over the E6400?
I briefly checked out an E6400 the other day and for a choice between machines of approximately similar spec I would opt for the D630 rather than the newer E6400.
I would be interested in opinions from users who have experience with both models.

Dell Latitude D630 :: Computer Refuses To Display Anything Upon Startup
Apr 22, 2013I have  Latitude D630 that has been having graphics issues.  I reinstalled the graphics drivers previously by booting through the CD, and that temporarily solved the issue, but not my computer refuses to display anything upon startup.  I can hear windows booting up, but I get a blank screen.  I've tried booting from the CD like I did last time, but it hasn't worked.
I ran the mute button + power button diagnostic and it's giving me a code I've been unable to identify.
The code is:
Num Lock + Caps Lock + Scroll Lock blink 3 times with an accompanying tone, which remains the same.
This happens three times.
Then I get a quicker and higher pitched series of fives beeps that go in tone: low-medium-high-medium-low. Â Accompanying this, the following light sequence occurs:
Num Lock, Num Lock + Caps Lock, Num Lock + Caps Lock + Scroll Lock, Num Lock + Caps Lock, Num Lock
This sequence also repeats itself three times. Â Then the entire pattern begins again.
Dell Latitude E6410 :: Windows 7 Will Not Load After Update - Go To Startup Repair
Nov 21, 2014I purchased a refurbished Dell e6410 about a year ago. Â The Laptop was working find with no issues. Â But in mid August, I did a windows 7 update... Â After the update, windows restarted... Â But instead of booting up to windows... Â It went to "startup repair". Â It ran this several times until is said it could not repair the startup.
I ended up having to do a recovery and reload windows and re-image my HD... Â After doing that, I tried windows update again. Â Same issue. Â after windows update... Â It would just got to startup repair.
Again, I had to restore my OS and re-image my drive. Â I tested and checked the HD and go no errors. Â Ran disk check and disk check /r... Â But if I tried to run a windows update it would just go into startup repair and I would eventually have to just reload my os and re-image the drive.
I spoke to an agent from Dell about it... Â He suggested I wait a month before trying to do the windows update. Â Perhaps they have a bug. Â Â Â
So I waited two months and tried an update again, last night.  This time, I would get the dell logo, with f12 option, that would go away and then "windows is loading necessary files", but then the screen would go black and dell screen came up gain, then "windows is loading necessary files".  I let it do this for almost an hour.  Windows never started...  I had no option to get into safe mode or any other boot modes. I have a regular desk top pc that I have done windows update and it has no issues.  Â
I am running windows 7 64bit.
Dell Latitude D430 :: Running Too Hot?
Feb 21, 2008I have a dell D430 but the temprature is far too hot, dell could at least test their Ventilation system before releasing it, if i could add another fan or software to get around this. I have windows xp professional installed.

Feb 3, 2013was running xp pro. I have wiped the hard drive and will be installing win xp pro on it.I only know noticed, in bios, that it says the cpu is running at 800 mhz and not at its proper speed of 1.73 ghz. In the bios i set it to default settings and saved it but no luck there. The bios is A06 from 2005 but i have a friend who has the very same laptop and his is running at the correct speed of 1.73 and he has the same bios so i dont thing that is the issue.

1- In the LCD option, it says touchscreen. Does that mean I can somewhat use this laptop like a tablet? ( Without the ability to twist the screen of course..)

7- I'll be using the notebook for design purpose. Such as photoshop, flash, illustrator or such. I'll be using 2-3 program at once with several picture/projet +internet + music. If my specs are 2.26ghz or 2.4ghz + 4gb ram + intel HD4500HD, will this notebook handle it?.............................

Mar 6, 2013I have a problem with my Latitude E6430 i7-3720QM upgraded to Windows 8,, Bios A09, 8 core...Fan is constantly running and drying the battery out. Tem range between 60-70C. All tests from Dell webpage passed successfully. Tests from Intel Diagnostic tools passed. However, fun is always running, lap top is warm and battery goes down very quickly, in an hour. Under windows 7 it used to last much longer. I even did a clean install of Windows 8 and the problem persists

GPU: nVIDIA Quadro NVS 160M / ExpressCard
HDD: (whatever is cheapest) I'll replace with a Scorpio Black or Blue (see question 5)
MEM: (whatever is cheapest) I'll replace with 2x2GB of Corsair DDR2-800
WI-FI: (whatever is cheapest) I'll replace with an AR9280 half miniPCIe card
LCD: WXGA+ (1440x900) LED-backlit
- Backlit keyboard, Bluetooth module, 6-cell battery
Keep in mind that I won't be running Windows on this machine, but instead, Linux (Arch Linux x64).
Questions:
1) Is the nVIDIA Quadro NVS 160M enough to run Compiz-Fusion smoothly?
I previously ran Compiz-Fusion with an Intel GMA X3100 integrated GPU and was underwhelmed. Everything worked, but the animations were pretty herky-jerky, most of the time. Aero animations under Windows 7 were similarly not very smooth. I'm hoping for more with the nVIDIA Quadro (I read one report that Aero with an E6400/nVIDIA wasn't very smooth).
2) How bad *really* is the touchpad?
I've heard reports that the touchpad is imprecise and laggy, but I've also heard from people who say they haven't had any issues. Is this a "hit or miss" situation with the hardware, or is it due simply to what people are used to? Or has this been fixed?
3) How durable is the lid/screen?
I've heard reports that "the E6400 is well-built and durable ... except for the display," with no real elaboration. Is there any truth to this? Bending, flexing, etc.? Screen distortions if pressure is applied to the back? Does it seem strong? Feel strong?
4) Does the "brushed-metal" on the back of lid look good in person? Or does it look cheap, fake, tacky, etc ... ?
5) Can I replace the hard-drive?
I heard from one owner that the hard-drives used in the E6400 use a non-standard SATA layout, and thus aftermarket hard-drives cannot be installed. That seemed like it would be a very stupid thing for Dell to do ... but I thought I'd ask.
6) After time (6-12 months), does the display start to wobble when open?
I had an Acer Aspire 4720Z (I know, cheap quality) whose display would wobble when open. At the top of the screen, probably about 1/2" to 3/4" of wobble. The Dell Inspiron 1521 I'm using now does the same thing ... very annoying. Does the E6400 exhibit anything like this even AFTER extended ownership? Say 6 months to a year or more?
7) Is the audio bad?
I've heard from a few people that the audio is simply horrid, even through headphones. I've also heard that disabling PC Spk has fixed it for some people ... is this an outdated issue that has been fixed by Dell?
8) Is there anything else I should know?
If there's anything else that I need to know, I'd love to hear it.
Sorry for so many questions, but this will be a big purchase.

about the possibility of a second hdd in the Latitude E Series I wonder if it is possible to use Raid0 with E6400 as mentioned in the manual.
Looking after it in the Bios I can't find any Raid Modus for SATA-Operation.

May 8, 2009I have been reading about people getting so many hours out of their E6400. I have the 9 cell battery and running the screen on the lowest setting, Bluetooth off and wifi on im getting close to 6 and a half hours of battery life. Is this normal....
I heard about doing a clean install, what does this do, and what benefits would i be achieving by doing this?..
Is there anything else i can do to get a little more juice out of the battery when i need it? I plan to have wifi on most of the time when it is being used. Basic web-surfing and Microsoft word...
Dell :: Windows 7 On Latitude E6400
Jan 11, 2009I am trying Windows 7 on my Latitude E6400, and I am having two a little issue for the system.
First issue is despite enabling advance performance for the drive under Device manager, Windows 7 gives me score or 2.0, than in Vista the score is significantly higher in the 5.0 range. My HDD is the Hitachi 5400RPM 160GB.
Second issue is, I don't know what I missed when installing the drivers/software, but I don't have the on-screen volume control. But the ambient light sensor, brightness level and keyboard backlit mode, does appear.

Jan 5, 2009I just got a E6400 from outlet (well it will be here around the 17th). It has a Dell 1397 802.11B/G Wireless Mini Card but I want to get a wireless-n card.
Are there 3 antennas in the laptop still that would allow an upgrade to a Intel wifi 5300 card (assuming it can be found outside of the customization page)?
Is there anywhere cheaper than dell to buy the wireless-n part for the E6400? Dell only has the 5100 for $59.99 and haven't seen the 5300 in parts.

Jun 28, 2009I have a Dell Latitude e6400, running MS Vista (latest SP2 + updates).
It is running Bios A14 (recent update).
My issues are:
1. Computer will start up and work normally. However, on shutting down and restart, it will not restart
2. The 'on' button flashes every few seconds as if the notebook is 'trying' to start up and the HDD light flashes every so briefly. This recurs indefinitely.
