Apr 22, 2009My fan runs after the lid closes and I put it directly in its case for class. Its in an enclosed area and doesn't get proper ventilation that way.

May 12, 2009I left the laptop on, I closed the lid, then I opened it again, but the display isn't coming back up.
I have to hold the power button down and then turning it back on.

Reason being, some would like to see if DELL has changed anything with regard to the thermals as this unit (T9400/Nvidia 160m) is finally running at a consistently cool temp, without the fan constantly going haywire (docked, with two external monitors).

Dell Latitude E6400 :: Running Extremely Warm Especially When Video Is Playing
Nov 28, 2014The grill on the left side of my Latitude E6400 gets extremely warm--especially when video is playing. The bottom side of the case, on the left side, gets very warm, as well. I've been able to confirm that the fan behind the grill on the bottom side *does* run periodically; however, the grill and underside remain very warm.
How warm? Right now, after playing a video for about 15 minutes, SpeedFan reports the following temperatures: GPU (162F), HD0 (109F), Temp1 (145F), Core 0 (140F), Core 1 (142F). All of the items except HD0 have a flame icon--indicating an abnormally-high temperature. Worse, I've seen the temperatures considerably higher than the above.
I've had this laptop for about five years. The latest BIOS and drivers are installed. It's working OK, otherwise. This problem started, suddenly, perhaps a year ago.

Feb 2, 2013I have an Inspiron 7010 which is 2 years old. In control panel devices it tells me to troubleshoot the laptop and cannot rectify problem with Broadcom virtual wireless adaptor. Secondly running the diagnostics say the Read test is not running. These are the only problems but are not affecting the efficiency of the PC. Should I ignore it?

Dec 7, 2007It used to work, when I had an older driver (i don't remember which, but it was old...), but now, with the 169.04 NBF MobileForce M4, it won't work. Frankly, it's kinda annoying (when I'm trying to sleep, and even with the lid closed, the screen's bright and in my face...). Yes, I know, I could have it turn off a minute after I close the lid (by setting it in Power Management or whatever), but that's not my point. I want to know why my display won't turn off, and I would like to find a fix, not a workaround.

Mar 20, 2013We had problems with our laptop XPS 15 (L502X). It froze often, we were unable to switch it off properly, etc. In the shop they told me McAfee caused the problem, so they uninstalled it. Then they started to check the harddrive, after 20% they found already 7 bad sectors. Now they suggest to ´close´ these bad sectors. But we´re using the laptop and it seems to work well. Do you recommend having the bad sectors repaired or closed or should we change the hard drive completely? Can the bad sectors do any harm?

Jan 17, 2009a few months ago, had the dell tech come in and replace the mobo on my overheating m1530.. in the process he had to take everything apart incl the screen and put it back after the new one was installed.

mine doesnt, and im wondering if it has something to do with the sensors on the lcd (if any).. or is the screen not supposed to turn off when you close the lid?

Feb 19, 2013When I close the lid to my laptop it doesn't sleep. I did check the power settings and it is set to when the lid closes the computer goes to sleep. I've tried changing it to shutdown when the lid closes, but it doesn't even shutdown. I can still see the power light on when the lid is closed and I can still here my computer running. Everything was working fine, then it stopped working a couple of days ago.

I booted it up and the BIOS informed me that it had to close down due to overheating! I felt underneath and the part just above the DVD-ROM drive was extremely hot. I did the same again with my Laptop and it just shut itself down again after about 5 minutes. I removed the bottom and both the Laptop up and the fans on the bottom are working fine.

Apr 9, 2013My Dell XPS L502 laptop is 1 year, 3 months old. It is 8G and came with an Intel Core i5-2430M 2.4GHz. My company is currently in a 24 month lease agreement with Dell. I went to turn the laptop on and it wouldn't turn on. I pressed the power button a few times and eventually it booted up and ran fine (in hindsight it may have been a little slower than usual but I had just downloaded a bunch of high resolution pictures so thought that could have been the issue).
I left my desk for lunch and upon my return, the laptop wouldn't come out of sleep mode - it was like it powered down on its own. I tried tturing it on again by pressing the power button but it wouldn't boot. Each time I pressed the power button, the light on the power button would flash and there would be a single click noise (the noise sounds like it is coming from the DVD player but I am unable to open the DVD player).
I took out the battery, put the battery back in - still wasn't able to turn the laptop on. I than took out the battery and just had it plugged into the outlet and after another 7 attempts of hitting the power button (and experiencing that single click with each push), the laptop booted successfully. I tried opening up a program (Quickbooks) to back it up and the computer froze (not responding to CTL+ALT+DEL) and eventually went into sleep mode. I haven't been able to get the computer to boot since. The keyboard does not light up but the little light in the middle of the power button does each time I press it, which is always than accompanied by a single click noise, which is coming from the right side of the keyboard, close to the DVD player.

For example, am selling items on ebay and during the listing process - particularly when loading a photo - page freezes and am unable to navigate up or down or click on anything to move out of the page. When I attempt to reload the page the laptop seems to make an effort to do this but with no results. Have been clearing browsing data to see if that works but no luck. I am running Windows 7.

Jan 20, 2009my notebook has been shutting off my network connection whenever I close my lid. This didn't start happening until maybe a few weeks ago, maybe even less. May 10, 2009I switched from using a VGA to an HDMI cable to link my external monitor to my laptop.
When I close the lid and open it back up, my laptop has no display and my desktop moves over to the External Display. The only way I get it back on my laptop display is to use the function button which just clones it and I would have to use the ATI Catalyst Control Center to get it back to normal again. I opened up Catalyst and closed the lid and I tried opening it back up. It then shows my Laptop display is disabled. Everytime I close and open the lid, it gets disabled.

Jul 21, 2014I just got the Elitebook 850 G1 and I've put all the settings to sleep when I close the lid and wake up when I open it. I've checked both settings in windows and in the BIOS and it's all good but when I actually do it, it doesn't wake up but restarts the computer instead. So when I've been typing away on Word, I constantly save it but it doesn't go back to where I left it. I thought it was one of the graphics drivers at first, because it has dual graphics, intel and ati. It's had some issues with the ATI but I think I've fixed it. I'm running windows 8.1 Pro.
I tried changing the settings to hibernate instead and what it gave me was a BSOD. Video_dxgkrnl_fatal_error. i remember it did that the first time i tried to do it before when it was on sleep mode.

Touchpad works ok but suddenly it freezes and stops working event the right - left click buttons. or sometimes a gentle finger on touchpad will randomly open and close the applications. The only solution to this is i restart my machine. This occurs frequently causing me to restart my machine atleast 20 times a day.

Mar 5, 2015I have, a.o., a TravelMate2420. Can I let it boot up and/or close down on specific times? It's one of my Acers, the oldest, and I want to use it for monitoring my sunpanels.
That program will start up after boot and close down while closing down the system. The program uses COMports and for datasavings harddiskspace AND a part of the machines memory, so it has to shut down regularly before the machines' memo is full. And then start up clean and so on. Aprox a week of data will do, so a weekly restart of the system would be needed.
If timer doesn't work I can use the local network option. But how?

I have the option of "Do Nothing" on when lid is closed. However, I found out that the laptop will just randomly open files/programs/apps. I have the laptop sitting on my table. There isn't any rocking or nudging. Is this due to poor planning on this laptop? The laptop isn't even a touch screen so what is going on?
Lenovo T400 / T500 :: T420 Takes Too Long To Hibernate When Close The Lid - Random Device Noise On Boot Up
Sep 3, 2013Ever since i've wiped the machine, i've been having these two problems. When I close the lid, it used to go to sleep straight away, but now I can see the sleep light (and the power button) flash and flash, then it goes to sleep.
When waking up it goes through the lenovo startup screen and resuming windows, then it asks for a password, before I used to open the lid and it would ask me for the password straight away. I know it was going to sleep because I could hear the beep straight away when I closed and opened it, but now it just takes too long.
Also, everytime I boot up into windows or resume into windows from a sleep state, I can hear the device noise, like something is being plugged in/out. But there is nothing being plugged in or out at the time. I can't get to device manager quick enough to see what it is that is causing it. But all drivers seem okay.
Also noticed, when the lid is closed, randomly the laptop turns off (hear the beep) an then turns back off again.

Mar 11, 2010There's a little quirky behavior that's bugged me a little bit ever since I started using Snow Leopard last summer.
Whenever I minimize or close an application using either the yellow/red buttons on the application or simply hitting CMD+M / CMD+W, the menubar for that application persists, necessitating a click on whatever application behind it before that app is actually "active".
For instance, if I were to hit CMD+W on Firefox right now, iTunes would be staring me in the face, but the menubar would still be for Firefox -- and I'd have to click on iTunes before being able to play something.
Is there any config setting or some way to make the menubar minimize/close with the application I'm minimizing or closing?
